    I can't really understand why it took 3 years for this camera to be recognized as one of the best FF cameras out there, but I'm really glad people is noticing the power this platform has. Best 4K in that price range, in my opinion one of the best user interfaces you can have in a hybrid package like this, a monster in low light, one of the best digital grain you can have, all in under 2000 $. I bought it 2 years ago, I'm working with it in all my projects. You can take the 4K and upscale to 6K and no one would notice. You can take the 1080p and upscale to 4K and no one will notice. You have full flexibility in color grading and you can fix any casual mistake with an increadible ease. I just shot a short film where the only lights available were the practicals HPS lamps and I can't be happier with my results. It has incredible richness, vibrance and BALANCE in colors. And it has a greater color space capture than a Sony Venice (wtf?). People are finally discovering this camera and a lot of bad reviews and incredibly blind opinions are being firmly questioned.
    Data rate is huge in capture? You'll always have SlimRaw.

      Well said. I’m just now realizing how great the FHD 100p is. I can barely tell the difference between that and 4k after super scaling in Resolve. Fantastic. And I just love the RAW controls for the cDNG in Resolve. The way the highlights get pulled down and the fact that you’re able to recover basically 3 stops in the shadows with little to no grain is just insane. And you said it - balance. Almost every shot comes out looking great with little to no work needed. Can’t wait to share what I’m shooting here in Thailand

    I've worked with all the big cinema cameras in my day job. But the Sigma FP is the most exciting camera out there. It's a mini-Arri when it comes to picture quality. Good to see that people are starting to produce some serious content with it. I think the reason why it's so good, is that Sigma had no cinema line camera to cannibalise (unlike the other rivals) so decided just to put everything into this. If you're a quick shooter, then this is not the camera for you. If you're a movie maker who wants the best image going, grab 2 or 4 of these!

    • @DylColeman
      @DylColeman  Год назад +1

      Well said! Definitely not in the point-and-shoot category but a nice option for those who want superior image quality in a manageable size. Thanks for watching!

      As an industry professional I can only 2nd your thoughts exactly. Had a 6k Pro as well but ended up selling it as I hated shooting with it compared to the FP. It's an odd camera....but we're all a bit odd!

  • @skfoto
    @skfoto Год назад +5

    Very well said. Had the fp and sold it for the fp l since i do mostly stills vs videos. The image quality, as you put it, is just the right amount of everything, and aimed for a pleasing outcome. One thing worth mentioning, is RAW images are in DNG, not just the video RAW files. Very efficient workflow for Lightroom, with decent file sizes. On the iPad, i use LumaFusion, but alas, can’t import CinemaDNG files.
    I find your review refreshing, as you did not do a specs comparison, and instead surfaced how enjoyable it is to use that camera, which begs to be picked-up. Super easy to use, built like a tank, and i actually find the menu system very straightforward to use. The fp l has a slightly more responsive AF but still not recommended for video. And hard to pull off flash photography. I actually find the electronic shutter very appealing, and somewhat compensates for the lack of IBIS. I use my camera with sigma dg dn lenses, Leica M lenses, and the Voigtlander 35 f/1.2.
    Thank you for your real-world video of the fp.

    • @steveteare3865
      @steveteare3865 Год назад +1

      I would be interested to know if you are happy with the upgrade. The fp l seems to have had a bad press, but I think it would suit me well for what I want, which is mostly photo (with ability to crop and still have resolution to spare), but some video (cinema dng to external ssd). Is it an issue having a 61MP sensor when most lenses can only resolve 10 - 40 MP? Does a 100% image on the fp-l suffer from any softness as a result of this? Thanks.

    Great video. I love this camera. Basically it’s a unique use case camera. But if you fit that it’s perfect. You forgot to add great in low light. Great for photography. And I love having different exposure set ups for video and photo at the flick of a clunky switch. I have the ef 28 f2.8 with IS and that in crop mode is a great combo. If you have the budget then the lumix 24-105 is a superb match. Oh and false colours and zoom focus are so well implemented too. Wait. It’s weather and dust resistant too. Oh and the lcd is very high quality.

    Oh my gosh, much respect for traveling with a rig like this. You are brave, skilled ++. Be careful when you visit Thailand. I visited 5 years ago for a 2-month trip and I never was able to make myself go back, I'm still here. I have a lifehack for you because it sounds like you need it. GoPro has a $50/year cloud service with unlimited space. So, if you need a place to archive, it's what I'm using with my A7IV and my ungodly file sizes. I think will work for your ungodlier file sizes. I hope you guys have a blast in Thailand. It's safer than America here in terms of being robbed, but still, keep your gear on you. Don't even leave it in your hotel unless you are in a 5-star hotel.

    I’m so happy I got one, definitely a different experience. One of the things that makes it worth every cent is being able to shoot places that would normally restrict you if you had a bigger rig. I’ve been asked to leave with my BMPCC 6kPro and gone a few days later with the FP and looked like every other tourist. And… the image quality WOW. It does need a bit of love in post but the look… buttery doesn’t begin to describe it. Thank for the awesome post!

    I do agree the FP and L are very under rated. Having worked with black magic and other cinema cameras, the lack of different and more compact formats is one of its largest flaws. I was blown away with the versitility and data a BMPCC 6K has in h265. I find RAW overkill for 95 percent of the stuff i shoot, especially if just doing family stuff. Hopefully having other file format sizes does occur in the near future for the FP.

And it has to work completely unattended, that means I adjust it, set it to record an leave it until I am finished with playing in the band and can return to switch it off.
    I started with a Panasonic GH-2 (with modified firmware), then Pana G70 (equivalent to G7 outside of Europe). But it was annoying because the European version has a 30 min limit in recording time for video. Next I tried the BMPCC 4k, great video and about 6 h of recording possible in BRAW using a 1 TB SSD. But all settings are to be adjusted manually and the built in AE mode is underexposing heavily. So I'm very fine now with a Sigma fp and a Sigma 24 - 105 mm zoom in f/4. In DNG 10 bit I achieve 2 hours of recording time when using an external T7 SSD in 2 TB. Exposing in automatic mode works fine when set to - 1 EV, correcting this in post, most of the time without getting visual noise and preserving enough highlights.
    Negative issue #1: the SSD is warming up and when reaching about 40 °C it starts throttling. That occurs typically after about 20 to 30 minutes of uninterrupted recording. Throttling the write rate doesn't please the camera so it stops recording. To work around this I mount the SSDs to a heat spreader in aluminium and place them significantly below the camera. For the last 4 months this worked fine.
    Negative issue #2: powering the camera externally only works with a battery dummy adaptor, so I need to change from battery to the dummy every time I use it. And there is no backup power by the internal battery because it's not present then. With the BMPCC 4k that's much easier, there is a power connector to be fed by about 12 V DC and all works fine. And when the external power stops it continues using the internal battery.
    Negative issue #3: the DNGs transfer very slow when using windows. As a workaround I use the second output option in slimraw to write the slimmed DNGs simultaneously to both working and archiving drives. The BRAWs with dozens to hundreds of GB in one file copy at about 100 to 400 MBytes per second when using SSDs and USB 3. The DNGs drop to about 20 to 40 MBytes per second after very few seconds of quicker transfer.
    Positive issue with Sigma fp and BMPCC 4k: using the same color science (Gen 4) for DNG and BRAW results in nearly matched images, at least for my purposes. I'm not a pro colorist....
    So thank you very much for the review, I'm checking your videos about color grading as well

      Hey there! Thanks for sharing! I've never thought about using the fp for long-form recording such as you described but it's interesting to hear your experience with it. I know that some have had success actually buying and external recorder and shoot to BRAW with the fp. May help with file sizes and allow you to record for longer periods of time on similar capacity drives. I wonder if Sigma will come out with a camera that addresses a lot of your concerns at some point. Here's hoping 🤞🏾

    first off i really liked your video. one thing that frustrates me ist eh backdial of my fp does not work properly in picking up which direction im spinning. I have seen that you can get it replaced by sigma but you have to send your camera in and it takes 2 weeks and costs about 160€ . i feel like they should offer that for free since its their fault. i also use slimraw, another option would be to do a rough edit in davinci to recover highlights and shadows and then export in prores, but i don´t know how much you could actually save.

Suprisingly, the Samsung 1 TB SSD fits right inbetween the gap left between the plate and the body of the Sigma fp (kind of a perfect fit lol) I've since started using a smallRig SSD holder attached to the bottom of the Sigma fp to hold my SSD, which I'll definitely have to remove if using with a gimbal. I've only put it on a gimbal a few times while I was in Thailand.

    I recently left the Panasonic S1 and went with the Sony A7IV. I do not regret that choice. For a short period I was looking at the FP because like you it checked a lot of boxes but the price you're paying for the extras, T5 drives, and eventual hard drive space it didn't make sense to me. However... I just saw a used FP on B&H I think for $950. Now for that price and a set of the Sigma apsc lenses.
    Now of they could only drop the FP sensor in the Sony A7SIV....

    • @DylColeman
      @DylColeman  Год назад

      Right?!? The A7SIV seems like the closest thing to a perfect camera out there. I just couldn't swing the price for the body only, and then I'd need to buy a speedbooster to adapter all my canon glass, etc, etc, Luckily, I didn't have to buy too many extras for the FP. I have a bunch of T5s already that I've been using with the BMPCC4K, and since I have no plans to use this thing in a professional environment currently, I can forego some of the other much-needed extras like a full cage, handle, external battery and monitoring solutions, etc. Perfect fit for me, but I can see it easily missing the mark for so many

You just have to come up with a way to mount your T5. I also have a wireless Go mounted on it. Without the gimbal, I like using the Canon IS lenses with it. especially the 16-35 F4, and the 24-105 F4. I’m probably going to pick up the Sigma 20mm F2 eventually. I have an A7S3, but I hardly use it. It’s too easy! I kind of like working for my shots. plus the colors on the FP are a whole lot better, but I ain’t getting rid of my Sony any time soon.

Often times, the image quality is better than the full frame mode, depending on the sensor and how it’s handling scaling the resolution to a video standard like 4K.

    I'm liking your style as I watch some of your videos. You've got a great voice and editing chops!
    I wanted to like this camera, but once you rig it up like you need to, it's no longer tiny. If only it recorded those nice images internally! But that's the Achilles heel.. it doesn't. You need that external SSD and cable, adding two points of failure. And even then the files are ridiculously huge. The storage format of one file per frame just sucks. I'd need to add a transcode step just to make media management reasonable.
    The ergonomics also leave a lot to be desired. The EVF covers both the HDMI port and USB charging. There's only one thumb dial unlike basically every other camera that exists. And the non-articulating screen is as annoying as the BMPCC4K... basically demanding an external monitor.
    I say all this because I really hope Sigma can improve on the obvious disadvantages in their next model.
    Instead I bought a Lumix S model, which makes life a joy. No need to rig it out at all. Articulated screen and EVF included. IBIS makes life a joy. That's an essential feature for me. As a bonus I also get a fantastic stills camera (with mechanical shutter so I don't worry about light strobing).
    Also amazing image quality, with perhaps the best colours I have seen. (Though I wouldn't knock the Blackmagic.)
    EDIT (again): Forgot to mention much better battery life.

    • @DylColeman
      @DylColeman  6 месяцев назад

      Yeah there’s a lot that could be improved. I also hope Sigma takes suggestions like these to heart in improving the model for any future iterations. I myself have started using accessories from Dark Power Labs that improve on some of the things you mention above. I have a drive holder that fits right over the EVF, so I’ve been able to ditch the T5 and cable for a tiny 2 TB. Absolutely awesome.

      Lumix s series cameras have the same sensor as the sigma. S5 is a way better choice than the sigma unless you care about cdng. S5 can do Braw externally though.

    How did you use the canon and Nikon lens? Was it adapter then manual mode

      That’s correct. For the Canon EF glass I’m using the Sigma MC-21 converter. For the Nikon there’s an additional adapter ring in place to change the Nikon mount to EF, and of course with that older lens I’m controlling both focus aperture on the lens itself.

    Excellent video. Question it says no internal raw recoding but I thought you could record Raw internally in 1080p? Thank you.

      Not sure. Haven’t tried it yet. I assumed the no RAW recording at 4k was because of the data transfer rate, but I would think you could record RAW at 1080 at least. I’ll have to investigate

    Great montage man..the sigma fp definitely needs some love but I personally preferred the s5 over it..u dnt need to buy all these extras for the same price and dynamic range seems to be better on the s5 and it got ibis too. For the I price I saw you pay it with evf, the a7iv would nt have been better ? You could add ur ef glass easily for 100$ or 20$ ish for these vintage glass :)
    Also 1min for 22gb is insane when you see what s5 vlog codec can produce with just 150mbps lol so on the long run this camera is going to cost a lot just for storage. You will always think twice before recording a moment for a long time, asking yourself if its worth the disk space lol

      Yknow it’s funny you mention what the limited space does to you in considering what to shoot and what not too. It’s part of what attracted me to the camera. Now, it almost feels as precious as film yknow? Which adds an even greater significance to what you DO choose to shoot. As far as the A7IV and S5 goes I can’t tell you how much I went back on forth on those options. What it came down to wanting to make the jump to full-frame, the comparable image quality to the bmpcc4k, how small and compact it actually is, and also just how weird it is. I actually like learning curves and the methodical nature of figuring out how to use and mastering a piece of gear. All of this things added up to the right choice for me.

      @@DylColeman Exactly why I want one too. I have the S5 and use it more than my A7S III. I just need the FP for the very reasons you say.
