    I have seen bears right from several of my camps. I have been as close as eleven feet from a 350lb balck bear. And i have hunted bears for many years. Unless you startle a bear in thier territory or they are defending cubs, 99% of the time as soon as they see you they run away. We are not on the menu for a bear, and bear "attacks" don't happen because the bear wants to eat human. With that said, people still have to be aware when in the bears home! Thank you for your comments and support, John.

      I have a bear that follows me around my property snorting and teeth clicking . I have never seen it yet even when I was butchering a deer .
      But , it stayed about 20 feet from us off and on for over a week .
      I have hunted many bear and never had this happen before .
      No one has been on the property for atleast 7 years or 8 years .

    An animals fear depends on where you are. My wife and I went to Great Smoky Mtn National Park this year and those Black Bears are not afraid of people at all. In fact I had a Very large male come into camp and all we could do is get out of the way. I had our tarps overlapping and he walked right in between them. Fortunately he didn't bother a thing. Everywhere else I would agree with you. Just the sent of a human most of the time will detour them. Unless they are protecting food or cub.

    For sure Jay. The whistle means a "human noise" to a bear. If the bear "Knows" you are human... You greatly reduce the chance it will want to interact with you, John.

  • @CommonSenseOutdoors
    @CommonSenseOutdoors  11 лет назад +6

    Great Point! Did you have a fire and make alot of noise? I hadn't given thought to the bears in national parks that have been ruined by people. My lack of thought on that is because i don't like to camp where other people are, and i have never camped in a park. Iam glad to hear all turned out well and you have a great story to tell. Thank you for your comments, John.

    I do carry a 10mm semi auto in a chest rig when I go camping off trail.
    But, that is a last resort. Being a hunter as well, I do not like shooting things I am not hunting.
    You have some great tips. I will use them so hopefully I will not have to use my last resort.

    my rule of thumb when bush camping is i dont go anywhere i cant take my dog or guns. I train them to stay and to only alert me cause they have better ears than I do. And my shot gun with mixed 1 in chamber with bird shot and rest with slug. But the vid poster is def right on all he said. So weird for me to see people have a off site cook site and dont take anything with them when they go. leaving defense at the camp. But first and formost...dog and gun! And if a place wont let me have both to defend myself then i dont believe they have my best interest at heart. Be safe out there people

    You can deter bears from entering camp sites with a portable electric bear fence. Small kit that brings huge peace of mind.

    Thank you lifesaver I am in the middle of Nebraska just stopping for the night got here really late and accidentally opened a can of sardines as opposed to the canna chicken I had. Not saying this was related but I swear not three minutes past when a pack of coyotes started howling like I just threw a steak on the fire. Fortunately I am at a campsite but there are no other tents only RVs and there He’s a fire ban. Not saying I’m necessarily worried about coyotes but like I’d like to sleep tonight I do have two dogs with me but they are not very big so this made me feel better I do have a whistle not very experienced camper trying to learn.

    Finally I find someone that sees bears the way I do. Pretty much as big dumb lower animals they don't understand something so they shy away from it - for example if a bear shows up in your area you can simply throw rocks at it (much like you would a dog) the bear not knowing what/where the pain is coming from will leave in short order. I once ended up in between a momma bear and her cub, I slowly backed away from both. Momma bear went to her cub and I stood by till they left the orchid.

    Came into a close encounter with a lion in the Sierra's years back. Also 2 wild dogs. The wild dogs had the bad luck, we hated to do it, no owners were anywhere near, they had no collars and never came by to look, they rushed my 3 year old littke sister so me and my Dad dumped them. They were big pit mix breeds that went feral I'm guessing. Also another thing to watch out for even if you are pretty far away from civilization.

      I'm in Arizona and we have alot of snakes..main thing is making as much sound as you can so they hear you coming and can get out of the way..worst thing for snakes is they can't really see so go by vibrations so if they don't hear or feel you coming they feel sneaked up on and will attack.
      Good thing to have dogs snake trained by a professional or they might be curious and want to play not realizing how deadly a bite can be.
      I try to carry a stick or walking poll and make noise as possible so they hear me coming..it's good for all animals too!

    My bet is he wouldn't have came through if the fire was already going. I hope i didn't sound like i was knocking national parks, I know they have big beautiful areas. I meant i have never camped in an area where the bears have been ruined by too much human interaction and feeding. Thank you for your reply, John.

    Well, there's always the string-of-cans-with-rocks-in-'em tripwire alarm (if you have cans, or have collected enough of them). 'Works great in combination with fire(s).

  • @hillbillybushcraft
    @hillbillybushcraft 11 лет назад

    I made a fire after he went through in hopes he would stay away. And he did. But there were half dozen or more deer that came to check on the fire.
    The Smokies are HUGE. Sometimes there are others in a camp site with you but a lot of times, depending on the time of year, there will not be anyone for miles.

    Tiger piss is what prospectors in the Far North of Canada use, to spray around their campsites, to deter the Polar Bear...being much farther South, I use an infrared detector alarm, a Cold Steel Gladius, and an Kel-Tec Sub-2000...
