wal-mart sells those alarms in the hardware department... i think they are near the smoke detectors..
we used the same alarms on wheel chairs in the nursing home so we would no when a client would try to stand up when they would forget that they were 100 years old and couldn't walk
My case is a bit different,, it's not the bears that I watch out for ...
I lived in northern saskatchewan and nunavut for many years, no roads. The only thing that ever kept the bears and wolves away from camp was nails. Pound them through a piece of wood and place them in front of entry areas. They remember and will stay away. Put them about a half inch through the wood for the first time so they don't get hurt too bad, if that doesn't work just make them longer until it does. Please don't use screws tho.
Good idea not only for bears, but i can see many practical applications for this device. At this price point (extremely affordable) this could easily be purchased and tossed into a bug out bag to add perimeter security in a grid down situation. Thnx for the tip!
Thanks for stopping by :)
Guess you never camped in Grizzly Bear country if you think that will wotk on Bears.
@@hayseed2360 it doesnt need to work with anything other then you the point is to wake up , what the animal does after that you deal with after.
That nice high pitched sound is going to make them think you're a wounded animal.
Nice, simple, and effective setup there Lilly. Appreciate ya taking the time to pass it along my friend :)
Living in Northern Ontario, I've been using the poor man's version of this for years: tin cans and fishing line. Never thought of using the personal alarms. Awesome idea. Planning a cross country trip up to the Yukon this year, hopefully I can try it.
Nice thing about the poor man's version is theres no batteries to die or electronics to get wet.
I have experience with wildlife and different types of devices and I can garantee you that you should absolutely only expect these devices to WARN you and not REPEL anything... They just don't work reliably as a repellant / deterent. They will however, give you a heads up.
Great video. I'll admit I was slightly worried at the beginning when the device was set up at the entrance of your camp. It's too late there because the animal is already engaged in a closed environment (a funnel) and will turn extremely aggressive if confronted. However, your detailed set up instruction was on point!
Hmmm ... everyone's an expert.
@@susiearviso3032 he's right whether he's an expert or not so what's your point? Why don't you have the same attitude to all the videos on RUclips? Disregard all advice in case someone is an expert. Good strategy!
I put a sign that reads,” no bears allowed “.
Hi Lily, as a survival tool against people it may be interesting but that is about it. Firstly, I would never set it up at a low height due to raccoons, possums etc that would be constantly tripping your wires and giving you a heart attack every few minutes. Last but not least it will NOT deter any type of Bear, or Cougar. I have extensive experience in Bear country and can say that the best deterrence starts with "passive deterrence". Meaning do not have any food articles (cooking, cleaning, pots, wash rags etc. ) in your camp. Cook at least 50+ meters away from where you sleep (your camp) and place all of your food and toiletry items in a Bear bag, again also at least 50 meters away from your camp. Do not setup your camp on a Bear trail (look for scat, prints and Bear scratching on the trees). Having an all night fire also helps tremendously. If you have a large budget you could also setup an electric wire fencing to keeping those critters away (runs on batteries and a bit of wire). Last but not least, Bear spray really works and should NEVER be left out and attached to the outside of your pack or webbing so that you can get to it quickly. It would not hurt also to practice your draw and shoot with the spray. If you have the possibility to carry a gun that is also a plus but the minimum would be Bear spray. Small warning though, a pissed off mamma Bear will run through that bear spray no problem not to mention brush off a few shots from your rifle. This means situational awareness when out in the woods is key. You do not need to worry about wolves to be honest, they will stay far away from your scent unless you are badly injured and cant move. I think the device against wild predators would lead to a false sense of security. You just cant beat good woodsman skills and knowledge.
Sorry, what is wrong with a complementing early warning system? It will most probably give you some extra time and space to react within or possibly decide and act within.
Also, I think no one means this in any way replaces all other basic bear safety meassures.
Please do not misunderstand. I am a sub for Lily and I really enjoy her work but the title states "How to protect your CAMP from bears!" and not How to have an early warning against intruders to your camp. The device will not "Protect" your camp. I worry that people will misunderstand and get themselves hurt. This is no critique on Lily, just information on Bear safety. Bears are very specific, if the Bear is in Predatory Mode and is smelling food in your camp you will not stop him/her from getting in. I have seen Bears rip open metal trash containers and brush off the sound of a car horn and even a police siren. Early warning yes, protect, a clear no. I guess I was missing in the video Lily stating that this alarm does not replace "Bear safety measures". She has over 600k watching her and that has a certain level of responsibility. I really want Lily to go on doing her work, but at the same time I wish for no one to get hurt. Lily is a smart Woman and I am sure she is open to a bit of information that would help and not hurt.
Sorry for sounding harsh. I get your point.
Actually, I do think this relates to a very large number of channels and other media and that in itself should be a tell tale of the rules of the game (some own responsibility and common sense).
I think many parks having bears have billboards or such put up with bear saftey tips and I have also seen many national park/nature web sides with good bear safety guidelines.
Not sure what to think of people not checking the basics themselves before actually going into nature, especially so bear country.
Perhaps, the problem with common sense is that it is not that common...and that's one reasons companies needs to write "don't put your arm into the lawnmower underside when it is running" ;)
The fine print to "protect" all possible angles may be pages...I believe most one-person operations just doesn't have the means to do this and it may even repel some viewers.
If a sub take a look at the full picture including other videos in this channel, one will get a good dose of some essential bear safety. Cheers.
Ok, I appreciate what you say and your motivation behind it. Kudos for that.
I just think the title should not be taken literally. I think the meaning was to show how this kind of devices could be used to help. I feel it is not stated directly, but in between lines that one should always take care and sort out the basic first when going out. Many parks in bear country have billboards and signs, and a simple google search on "bear safety" will give everyone a solid base when it comes to general advise. Cheers.
Set a watch and make sure the man on watch stays awake. Mama bear won't run through a .338 Lapua Magnum volley.
That's an awesome piece of kit Lilly. Think I need one to stop my Dad sneaking into camp and drinking all my beer!
lol :D
Hahaha
If he drinks enough of his own beer, he won't even notice.
TA Outdoors 🤣😂🤣😂 good one
yeah good luck with that !
Thanks for bringing this so our attention, Lilly.
camo fly fishing line is great for this in the woods.
I usually just hang fresh beef all around my campsite, so the bears get full and don't want to eat me.
Brian W Those were werewolves, lucky you fed them.😉
Now that yo fed them the appetizers they are ready to eat you!
Don't forget donuts, Brian. Bears love those. Get a few dozen so they will lay around for days in agony.
@@sinqros No, not werewolves, Kj Guitarman. They were Snipes.
whats your location? i will slaughter those bears. THAT BEEEF IS MINE! D:
Thank you for your time once again. It's so beautiful there. Ultimate peace.
Great information for anyone who doesn't know about these, useful thing to remember though. Thanks Lilly!
We had a few of these and they were extremely loud. Good idea Lilly.
Great video and a really useful tip! Hope you upload more in the future
Really a great idea, Lilly, thanks!
Thank you for all you do is Miss Lily you go above and beyond I just wanted to let you know people do see that thanks
Great job ! Very informative and a good adaption of these personnel alarms. Cheap & effective !
another great video,i always learn something valuable from your channel!!!
Thanks for sharing Lily. We used to make similar devices with clothe pins and 9v batteries. These are much easier!
New subscriber, Lilly. Love all the videos I have seen. Great work!
Grizzly bear - "that annoying sound just makes me want to destroy EVERYTHING!!!!"
Thank you Lilly! That is a neat little device.
Love this idea. If I was ever staying in the same place for a while, I'd do this for sure. I don't know if I'd bother if I was moving on in a day or two, as long as I keep food smells out of my camp.
I like this solution. I made something similar but using those window alarms you buy, that have magnets on each end. Attached to some tent pegs. But the tree tied solution using those pull sticks look like a very flexible way of achieving that.
Hey Lilly, very good job setting up perimeter alarm, utilizing a simple trip wire, very smart!!!
Hi Lilly
Been using these for years when staying away in hotel rooms and holiday chalets etc.
Criminals target tourist in their rooms at night while they sleep. A couple of these across the door and windows is an easy way to alarm the place.
A Female friend of mine was attacked, as the attacker knocked her off her bike and jumped on her she set the alarm off in his ear and kicked the hell out of his shins with the plastic cleats on her cycling shoes.
180 decibels in the ear and hard plastic pedal cleats = a deaf Rapist with no skin left on his shins.
great reaction of that woman, she should get a medal of bravery!
I usually watch you Lilly at the end of my day. After dinner I look forward to seeing you out in the wilderness passing along great stuff you have tested. Face it, most of us just wonder if something might work. Lol. You have proven to be one of the credible and reliable person's on RUclips. Thx again.
I love your channel I have learned a lot I live in the Northeast part of the US and just started working for Fish&Wildlife i spend most of my time in the woods and you have shown me some great survival tips! Thank you so much and please keep the videos coming
thanks lilly
Best way to run a camp is to have Lilly with you.
It was your stay on Vancouver that made me a fan. Congrats on breaking 600 subs. Rock on with ya bad self.
This is an awesome idea. Thanks!!!
It is a bit freaky being out I'm the woods in the middle of the night by yourself. I just got a couple of these also, provides some peace of mind.
Great video Lilly!
Love your videos Lilly!! Greetings from Brazil
Awesome video. Good job on the out of the box thinking.
If you use 40lbs test Spiderwire fishing line, Its about as strong as cable, and lighter, longer than wire. and camo's itself due to natural coloration.
Amazing you will save my life someday !!!! Thanks!
Pull string firecrackers also work really well for this. You can dip them in candle wax to make them waterproof.
I think she already did a video like that
NorthSurvival has a video on his channel how to make such a trap
My son and I camp regularly on our farm property. We put trail cameras around our campsite, and were surprised that after we turned in ,coyote's were all in our area, even right outside the wall of the nylon tent. This is an EXCELLENT survival tip and I plan to buy some tomorrow.
This is great advice - thanks. I'll be going wild camping in Colorado in the summer and have been nervous about bears and cougars. These will help me feel much safer - great idea, thanks a lot
That's pretty cool, I've never seen that before. It would be helpful if I get up to the Yukon (Grizzlies) or Northern Ontario in Polar Bear territory this year.
Yeah I really wished I had this with me on my Vancouver Island trip :)
My Self Reliance....just wondering,I'm not a hunter. Don't even own a gun my question if you're out there and encounter a huge mofo GRISSLY and it's in attack mode what would you use to stop all that massive power what would it take weapon/ammo?ive seen them in videos only and I just always wondered that. Amazing beasts.
My Self Reliance.... ruclips.net/video/-6r81UOzIHg/видео.html
Someone should notify the Grizzly Bear community ...Tha Danger is out here....Avoid the unpopulated woods and do not woner around alone ....All Grizzlys should stay together at all cost and matter >>>>>
Look out for Lilly ,it mite be bad encounter ......
LastCynic: agreed. don't know why an alarm system is being billed as protection. I thought, from the title, that the video would show a way to secure a camp. It's still up to you to protect the camp, and you don't have much time if something is coming at speed.
Thank you Lilly. Excellent tip for safety. God bless you.
This is great, thank you for sharing. We lost about 20 or 30 chickens last year to black bears. I may try this around our chicken coops. Thank you have a great day
good idea. good luck with your chickens!!
You are awesome Lilly!!
this is a brilliant idea!!! thanks
Great idea, I thought about ringing my camp with string and tying a small bell on the line between the trees. But I like your idea better!!
they sell them at the dollar store in america. i use them for setting and alarm on my spring snares so i dont have to go checking them regularly and potentially scaring away an animal. they work great. also in grid down bugout you can use them to set alerts at door ways when you are scavenging etc... they can also be made into triggers for all kinds of explosives and such. very versatile.
What if the bear is deaf ? Just kidding, great idea you could set a few at a farther distance as an early warning something is in the area
love your channel.
Awesome!!! Excellent content!! Thank you for sharing!!! 😀😀
Super smart tactic! I don't do what you do, but I think I will pick up a few of these and keep them in my bug out bag
Ok... Thank you Lilly. That's something I never thought of, at all. Of course, as you said, in colder climates they might not work so well (I live in Canada). I like the idea of carrying a nice spool of half decent fishing line in the bag, or at least keeping it at a stash/drop point for an emergency bug out bag (not your normal, everyday bug out bag).
Either way, this is a good idea I might not have thought of at all, and I will give the cold/wet weather problem some consideration. Once again, thank you.
Nice video, very useful. Keep the video coming.
Hey Lilly, I really want to let you know that your channel has been a great learning channel for me in a lot of different areas. I was in the Army in the US, and I learned a lot, but your channel has been awesome and has taught me stuff I didn’t know before. Don’t let those assholes who are insecure about themselves affect what you do. I know you’re the real deal. Let those hating bitches keep learning from you. People always want to project their short comings on others, especially when it’s someone that does stuff they wish they could get recognized for. You have a fan in me. Keep doing your thing. Happy New Year. Looking forward to all your videos this year.
Oldskool 78 wow harsh
Oldskool 78, I feel the same way as you do. Many comments are not funny and are very uncalled for. Those type of comments - anyone who reads comments knows what we're talking about - have more to say about the commenter than about Lilly. But it has to be hard for someone in her shoes, and I sense that it pecks away at her confidence.
Lilly - You're great and we hope you know it. This world throws a lot at us and we all need to develop strong filters to survive, so as not to be perpetually tormented by all the bad out there.
Facts aren't harsh.
Don't try this. You will get eaten by "THE BEARS".
abc dfg , stop being made of paper and take it for what it is. People love to be dicks and talk shit, without giving constructive criticism. All Lilly does is put out knowledgeable survival content and bitter people like to talk trash. I clap back on her behalf. People need to stop throwing shade and hating.
I bet you could even do two lines off of it going into different directions and it would probably still trigger the alarm great device
Tying bells to the line also works if your batteries go out or you can’t get a hold of any batteries
Very nice video! I learned a lot.
Thank you Lilly brilliant idea, tech with survival fantastic.
Thank you Lilly! This is a very overlooked topic that no one on youtube talks about! How to make a shelter safe from predator. Thanks for your amazing videos. Alles Liebe🌹
Good for people proofing too
Hi Survival Lilly how about about tying the alarm off in a V shape pattern - should more than double your chances of the alarm going off when needed.
Cool video thanks I like all of your videos keep going 👍
There are little fire-crackers with strings. I forget where I got them but the box says 'pulling fireworks'
Thats pretty cool. We use to use cans but that alarm looks alot better. Great video thanks.
Excellent alarm to have.
Great! Thank you and Hi from Vancouver Island! :)
darn! I actually do the same as you. I attached one of this with my wallet, passport, hotel door, hotel windows, tent zipper, backpack. people kept opening my bag and tent without telling me and triggered the alarm. But they calling me crazy(!) to set an alarm at the first place. So happy to see someone actually doing the same thing as I always do. Yea right, people poking you all day long. but when you finally act out. You know what? you are the only crazy person in the whole environment.
Never had a bear problem yet.. I do a week on the French River System each spring and so far.. no worries!
Great video !!
Pretty cool Lilly!
Generally black bears can be *easily* scared away with sound or appearing intimidating. Grizzlies however, while I don’t think the alarm would scare them, they would be very helpful alerting ppl of unknown intruders.
Lisa in Minnesota This is why I would never hike/camp anywhere near grizzly territory.
Awesome video Lilly. I dig those things.
Nice video Lilly.
I'm thinking Claymore!
Bonnie
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I know how to set them up with trip wire and Booby trap so it can't be picked up and turned around
still More carrying weight. Also it may get awkward if Aunt Annie comes out in the evening with milk and cookies.
NO test run on that Claymore ......Remember:)))))
Very nice. Great idea.
I used to use empty bean cans with spent casings. Kept my treehouse safe for years
great video, bought two the same day i watched the video
That's pretty cool. Geat Vid. Have you ever thought of using mouse traps aswell. Using the same way you did, with little different configuration. Like snap caps.
I'm a beekeeper and I think aside from our electric fences, which sometimes fail, your idea in this video would be great for deterring bears away from our beehives.
That is a pretty good idea. I don't worry much about the black bears and wolves in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Ontario Canada... But I can see where that would be handful and give piece of mind when in serious predator territory. I will certainly have to remember that.
To make it less noticeable you could cut the loop off and tie that plastic "nub" to the tree with the wire. Maybe you could cut the whole strap off and loop the fishing wire though whatever the strap is attached with. The closer you get the device to the one tree the less noticeable it will be. You could even camouflage it further by propping a stick against the tree and maybe using some long grass. Just a thought.
great video great idea thank you
They also great to put those on family that's sleep so when they move it gos off
Hi Lily Steve from Vancouver Island Bushcraft...definitely useful here on Vancouver Island with the black bears and cougars...good video
"When I was in Vancouver Island . . . ." Ah, yes--the infamous 'Hi bear!' incident.
I'm from Alberta, and this is a great idea. I'm in Grizzly and Black beer territory alot. I've already had a couple close calls with Grizzlies while hunting. But I am usually with a couple friends and we know how to handle them. It's when I'm at camp, especially a small, camp it's unnerving trying to sleep.
The only problem I see is it getting wet or broken. Other than that it looks like a great idea
Awesome protection.
Neat ideas on improving security for a camper, will you be doing video on modifying the device?
yes I thought about it, if my viewers are interested
Spiffy cool" idea !
Thank you for sharing.
I live with a wolf, they are really clever, cautious and difficult to trick, really difficult. I could not see him going into a camp if he thought it was occupied. More likely he would observe the camper and then wait till they were gone, if he saw you step over the trip wire he would immediately know something was up with it and try to avoid it.
I seen a guy use a mouse trap with a shogun shell with lead removed and does what you did with fishing wire.He modified the trap to ignite the shell to make a loud noise.
Great idea.
Great solution video 👍
Great tip!
Very good idea Lilly
Good device and great idea. Having an alarm may or may not scare off a hungry predator. Having something wake you up prior to the time the predator makes it to your camp would be invaluable. I have similar devices before for other things. I have seen different brands that work as door opening devices. etc.
