Did the same thing a couple years ago with my leaf blower after 10 hours of sanding. I came outside and the entire neighborhood was in my driveway. They thought the dust was smoke and my place was on fire! HA! Great job buddy!
Looks good. Don't worry about the stripes at all, you will be sanding the whole thing a couple of times yet before you paint. Generally the colour and clear are much thinner and easier to lay down than the primers.
You may already know this but when u spray start on the bottom of one side and push the paint across the car. U can find the method explained by Eastwood. It’s called push pull method. Good looking work tho man! Enjoyed the watch!
when you paint the roof start at the side drip rail then work inwards. as opposed to starting from the middle out ,after working from drip rail into middle then go around to the opposite side and bring the paint wet edge from the center out
WAW Thank You Bro, I don't know much about the painting but it's awesome to see you and your Girlfriend working together and helping you out keep up the good work and stay dirty Again Thank you!!
With regard to the tiger stripes on the roof. While I'm certainly not an expert, I think I saw something that might cause it. Watch the video at the 12:15 mark. It appears you're holding the gun at an angle to the surface. Not the handle of the gun, but look at the spray pattern. To get it even you need to hold the gun more "down". It will be painful to hold it at the required angle, but I think that will help. Lookin good. I wish my car was that far along.
All very typical 40+ year sports car under paint work.your car is normal.and is all normal Z car ravageness. Both my cars were the same. You may not had a new roof fitted as all z cars were leaded in the spots where you have brazing rod. So either it was deleaded.or you had a new roof ,I doubt it's a new roof. I've hand stripped both of my Z the same way and a wire wheel cup in a grinder helps . Yeah primer you can always ,sand primer.not to worry about runs. But it's good practice, for your ,paint spray techniques. Kick ass girl friend she puts in alot of work. Use two part primer thru out.,two good coats equal one full coat then another full coat equals one coat, x2. That will give you a great base to hand block with 80 then 180, then 220 ,then 320. Spray a black guidecoat ,between grits.after a good block with 80 then I'd do Bondo fill repairs.then two coats ,spot prime those areas 80 grit block to match the rest, then guide coat the car and block the whole car with 180 excetra. This is the way to straight and shiney.no short cuts ( it sucks ,lots of work) Two part primer gives you the ability to block out thru the grits because you have enough material,on there to sand flat. It's the fastest way to straight and flat. Great progress.Im about to be rolling both cars on four wheels . And fill sand and paint the out side chassis shells too. Like you I need them both to roll to keep dust outside. Great to watch you work ha ha but I'm doing the same ,minus girl friend ha ,I'm batchlering it thru.
How much epoxy primer do you need for a medium size truck I have a Dodge Dakota 4 door truck 4 wheel drive 2006 but I wouldn't need to put epoxy primer on all of it if I do it. Not the top of the truck or the or the front rear door. Also the back part of the tailgate either. But where do you get epoxy primer at the store I have a bright silver metallic truck and I rather get it at a store if I do it. I would imagine I would need a light gray epoxy primer.
Oh man I just started stripping my front fenders and all the previous owners bondo is about to be removed. I'll probably start posting videos of it on my channel soon but for now I've just been posting images on the gram. Watching you do this def motivates me, hopefully I'll have my car in epoxy soon, doing some metal work atm.
blitzkrieg masterrace I have a 260Z. Not sure when I'll start posting videos. I have a huge pile of parts I've been buying the past few months. I plan on soing a bunch of installs but first things first and that's to fix the rust. You can see where im at on Instagram @rolledingold
I don’t have nearly the tools or skill you have but I have removed all the body part minus the engine to wire wheel the rust and scuff the rest of the car and finally spray some rust encapsulator everywhere. So question should I take off the doors? Is it difficult?
Doors are very easy to take off, you'll just need a 12mm wrench and its 5 bolts. 3 on the bottom 2 on the top. You will need some help though, someone to hold the door. If you have the window and all the internal pieces still in it.... itll be a little heavy.
Stewart Motoring sweet thanks for responding I almost have everything I need to get started so wish me luck and also can’t wait to see how your ride turns out 👍🏼
What grinder attachment were you using on your grinder to strip off the paint? I've never seen a pad that large before and it seemed to do a decently quick job.
I’m certainly not a paint expert. I don’t want to give advice on that, but I painted the car with a dtm primer. Then did bodywork (body filler). Then High build primer. Then epoxy primer. Next it’ll be base coat clear coat.
It was like a 30 grit sanding disc. I’ll warn everyone though, be careful not to hit the metal. You can warp it/ make it thin if your not careful. If your car isn’t full of body work, then I’d probably suggest a different method
I have a super old snap on welder. Don't really like it...I really would like a newer mid level mig welder. It would be better if I can learn how to use my new Tig welder!
Well at least there was a reason for the bondo on yours, not like... couldn't be bothered to take 1 min to lineup a panel they were already installing. (should have just fixed the dent though...)
Can’t remember how many quarts it took, but I followed the directions on paint for amount of coats. I can’t remember but it may have been 1 light coat and a second medium coat. Plz look at instruction book as this has been several years ago now
You mentioned in the video you didn't know why the previous owner had done some of the body filler fixes to the vehicle and why some of the fixes are the way that they are. From the brazing used to fit the roof on the car at the b and c pillars I would imagine that the repairs was actually done in 70's when that was still common. The rough area around the passenger rear tail and in front of the passenger rear fender well also look to be older repairs before stud guns became main stream in the early 80's. You're luck you have found what is referred to as mud worms where people used and old screw in style slide hammer to fix dents and then filled the holes instead plug welding which wasn't easy with the welders of the the day. I found some similar work done to my Z that my dad had done on the car around the mid 70's and those body guys must have been absolute master sculptors when it came to body filler because I had not idea the work was there until I started stripping it and I was trained in auto body repair.
Looking good but that bad fit/weld for the replacement roof on the b/c pillar is driving me nuts. I hope you get your filler perfect there as it's burned in to my memory.
It was probably a 40 grit disc. And there was more filler than paint so I had to. I would not recommend that course of a disc If there is no filler on the car.
Well you saw the tool, the pad on it was like 36 grit? I think, but that's because it had a lot of bondo. Probably dont need something that rough if it only has a layer of paint
grinding the paint off is never a good idea can warp metal and you will spend a ton of time blocking out heavy scratches. spray problems gun fan not set properly to close to car moving to slow and gun not 90• to surface it takes practice keep up the good job you will get there
Hey there Stewart. I found your channel last night... watched a couple of your videos. Like the content and subscribed. You seem to have your head screwed on straight and doing some nice things. Just one thing that was little off putting - the bitching and complaining. You must realize that this Datsun is 40 years old. It's obvious it'll have bondo and rust. You are obviously passionate - show it more bro -
Did the same thing a couple years ago with my leaf blower after 10 hours of sanding. I came outside and the entire neighborhood was in my driveway. They thought the dust was smoke and my place was on fire! HA! Great job buddy!
Thats a funny story. I'm so frustrated with all the bondo on this car. UGH! I will know better on my next purchase
4:05 Dangerous game to spray the lady my friend. Dangerous game.
Hahah
I appreciate the attention to detail and respect towards prepping bare metal.
Looks good. Don't worry about the stripes at all, you will be sanding the whole thing a couple of times yet before you paint. Generally the colour and clear are much thinner and easier to lay down than the primers.
Thanks for the comment! And yep, this is just the beginning of a long road of body work ahead....
Spot on at 14:00, dont be afraid to lay it down. Great job!!!
Good job, I’m about to tackle my k5. What kind of sanding disks did you use? Seemed to work really well?
You may already know this but when u spray start on the bottom of one side and push the paint across the car. U can find the method explained by Eastwood. It’s called push pull method. Good looking work tho man! Enjoyed the watch!

Hm, that could work. Ill have to research that technique
Leap-frogging method
This is how I do it too
what brand epoxy? was it a 1:1? you did good for learning
Can’t find it anymore. Might have stopped selling it
Thanks for sharing. What type of Epoxy primer you are using please?
Is that the same primer you used on the the frame ?
great work buddy, it definitely looks better! what brand epoxy did you use?
SEM DTM Epoxy primer
WAW Thank You Bro,
I don't know much about the painting but it's awesome to see you and your Girlfriend working together and helping you out keep up the good work and stay dirty
Again Thank you!!
Thank you !
Nice man looking good that paint is looking sick! Well done !
Thanks!

Erick Barrandey what car is it?
I’ll sub if u start posting :)

Oh and I’m just doing the interior not the outside of the body
Doors are very easy to take off, you'll just need a 12mm wrench and its 5 bolts. 3 on the bottom 2 on the top. You will need some help though, someone to hold the door. If you have the window and all the internal pieces still in it.... itll be a little heavy.

Video coming tomorrow (:
Looking great and props to you missus for helping out.
What grinder attachment were you using on your grinder to strip off the paint? I've never seen a pad that large before and it seemed to do a decently quick job.
Yea its just a Milwaukee grinder. The disc I just bought some from harbor freight. Just be careful not to grind the metal down too.
So after stripping down to bare metal can you just put a epoxy primer sealer.
I’m certainly not a paint expert. I don’t want to give advice on that, but I painted the car with a dtm primer. Then did bodywork (body filler). Then High build primer. Then epoxy primer. Next it’ll be base coat clear coat.
What would the issue be if the over spray got inside the car?
Maybe it would be to keep dust from inside the car coming out and mixing with the wet paint?
Did you use an actual grinding disc or a sanding wheel?
It was like a 30 grit sanding disc. I’ll warn everyone though, be careful not to hit the metal. You can warp it/ make it thin if your not careful. If your car isn’t full of body work, then I’d probably suggest a different method
Nice job and good video. Lose the auto tuned crap music though. It's annoying.
What welder do you have? I was thinking of getting a name brand to learn how to mig weld or maybe get the HF and mod it so it performs better
I have a super old snap on welder. Don't really like it...I really would like a newer mid level mig welder. It would be better if I can learn how to use my new Tig welder!
I heard Mig was better for auto restoration. Did I hear wrong?
Well at least there was a reason for the bondo on yours, not like... couldn't be bothered to take 1 min to lineup a panel they were already installing. (should have just fixed the dent though...)
Nicely done! Great job!!!!
How many coats did you do put on and how many quarts of epoxy did it take.
Can’t remember how many quarts it took, but I followed the directions on paint for amount of coats. I can’t remember but it may have been 1 light coat and a second medium coat. Plz look at instruction book as this has been several years ago now

It actually has good fitment, but like you said its ugly. But the windshield and hatch fit great so can't complain.
what pad are you sanding with
Yo this looks hella dope.. looking forward to seeing it finished.. what is your next cat On Your list?
Jordan Hill thanks Jordan, the next car on my list? I️ want to build a real drift car after this restoration. BMW or 240sx
This isn't a "real" drift car lol looking forward to seeing it finished
DIY! How idiots blow up their garage. Make shift paint booth and gas water heater. Booooommmmmmmshakalaka!
Hey on epoxy primer is it good for polyurethane body parts too ?
Looks good, what grit did you use to sand?
3:09
3:18
what wheel you are using to remove all to bare metal???
Don't know the exact brand.. im pretty sure its supposed to be used for polishing a car, but I put a sticky 80 grit sandpaper on it.
And your fertilizing your lawn at the same time.... Multi tasking
FINALLY ANOTHER VIDEO :D
what kind of disk were you using to strip the paint?!
It was probably a 40 grit disc. And there was more filler than paint so I had to. I would not recommend that course of a disc If there is no filler on the car.
At 8:17 the dogleg was replace. Thats the welds to put the new piece on
Good eye! But it wasn't replaced. They filled some rust holes with brazing rod. Rest of the leg still has oem spot welds.
What are you stripping the car with
Well you saw the tool, the pad on it was like 36 grit? I think, but that's because it had a lot of bondo. Probably dont need something that rough if it only has a layer of paint
I commend you for all your hard work
I think paint stripper would have not warped the metal. Bust the bondo down with the grinder.
what wheels do u have on the car and what offset
15x9, cant remember the offset though
would it not of been easyer to use paint stripper?
Paint stripper wont remove bondo. Which my car was full of. So in this case it would not have been easier.
Metal was stretched. Split it and overlap it and weld it back
What wheels do you have?
Watanabe replicas
Great job on the car but was more impressive is your girlfriend helping you out..👫🙌💎
No doubt!
grinding the paint off is never a good idea can warp metal and you will spend a ton of time blocking out heavy scratches. spray problems gun fan not set properly to close to car moving to slow and gun not 90• to surface it takes practice keep up the good job you will get there
I agree, but it wasn't just paint. Lots of filler on the whole car. If it was only paint then I would not do what I did.
What epoxy primer did you use?
SEM DTM Epoxy Primer

Is that your wife you're blowing all that bondo dust on?
Future wife
its epoxy SEALER not PRIMER
We are all great full to have your word correcting abilities contributing to this channel
What spray gun did you use?
