    This is truly so helpful..not much in the stores to choose from. The clothes are hideous so I am going to make my own. As luck would have it, I have a tennis dress that would serve well for the pattern. Thanks ever so much!!!

    Many years ago, a friend asked if I could make her a dress from one she enjoyed wearing. My young age must have given me courage - so I took on the challenge.
    I used newspaper with her dress as a pattern.
    No one was more surprised than I at how beautiful her 2 new dresses turned out.
    So, I say, take a small dress of a child or one of yours that you like - and give it a try. Worse case scenario is that you've lost a bit of newspaper (you can try on newspaper pattern) or inexpensive muslin.

      I find American videos are the worst (I'm American!) as the video starts out with wasted minutes of posing, chit chat, & at the very end of the video there are the instructions, which take up a mere fraction of the entire video. I usually fast forward any video that shows hands waving round gesticulating, I keep pushing fwd til it gets to the meat and potatoes. British made videos for some reason are less of a time waster. Maybe Britons are less "movie star"? I don't know.

    Cut the back piece at first and use it as a pattern for the front piece. Cut more fabric to under the arms and after bust area take extra off bit by bit when you´ll return to the original pattern.

    When cutting out the front lower neck hole and deeper arm holes, it's easier if you just fold the top piece in half and cut both arm holes out at the same time, and both sides of the neck hole which will also guarantee symmetry and take half the time :)

    I would have taken the front part of the dress and folded it in half in order to cut the front neckline a bit lower and be shure that it is even on both side and the same for the arm openings. Freehand butting is always a bit delicate cause our eyes can misjudge distances and measurements. The folding of the front part in half will ensure that each side is evenly cut.

    This is how i was taught to sew. Patterns i find more difficult. The only thing i do is that i fold the dress that im copying from and fold the material twice so there are 4 layers and then cut like that, its much simpilar that way. no chalks neccesay and no fiddling about with the fabric. and then i take one layer away and the other layer which is the front bit, i fold in half again and cut the arm holes and the neck. no fiddling about that way. she keeps unfolding and refolding, urgh.

    When cutting out the deeper neck hole and arm holes, you should fold the front piece in half down the center and then cut them out. Then you will have perfect symmetry. It also would have gone much faster if she would have folded her dress in half, and laid it on a fold on the fabric and cut it out that way. Half the work, half the time.

      use a t-shirt and just extend the length. Otherwise, you can get a dress pretty cheaply ($6 or so) at a thrift store.

    • @MajClanger
      @MajClanger 3 года назад

      @@Nikatronixx Not everyone has a thrift store nearby or even $6 to waste on something. Also the point of using a dress not a t-shirt is that t-shirts don't have shape. So. Meh.

    • @Nikatronixx
      @Nikatronixx 3 года назад

      @@MajClanger I appreciate your critique. My comment was just a suggestion. If someone doesn't have $6 dollars and/or doesn't want to use a t-shirt thats fine, they would just ignore my comment and move on. I really don't see the point of negating a suggestion that could be helpful to some. I have actually made plenty of dresses using t-shirts that fit me well and they turn out just fine :)

Then sew as showed. Should come out ok.

People are tired of their designs being copied so their trying to pass this law in the United States to prohibit it. this means we canot make a ruffle skirt or a basic t-shirt for an example because it will already be patent/licensed by another designer, giving the owner of the licesned design to sue however copies their designs,shirt,pants,art etc. ) :

      ☺ i am an old woman & i have made many shift dresses similar to the way its done in this video.
      - if u use stretchy fabric, u can make the dress fit tighter, more form fitting, w/o using a zipper or button.
      But sewing knit fabric is really um, friggy, i cant do it.
      -also, i would only use a woven fabric garment to use as a pattern.
      ☺ Good Luck with ur shift hun 😉
      kurti patterns r good for woven cotton fabric,
      by kurti i mean those beautiful tunic/dresses indian & pakistani women wear over pants.
      there r a ton of D.I.Y. vids on youtube for them.
      again BEST WISHES ☺
