How I Sewed my Underlined Linen Shift Dress

- Hi folks, in this weeks video I show how I sewed up my Underlined Linen Shift Dress 💙💙💙. I’m over the moon with how this has turned out, the underlining gives that little bit of extra density to this light weight linen resulting in a dress that feels substantial, super comfortable and soft against the skin. It takes a little bit of extra work but for me totally worth it and bonus this method has given me a few ideas for future makes👌👌👌 I hope that the video helps those of you that are thinking of sewing up something similar and that you enjoy. Susanne 💕

I love sew alongs and this one is an exceptional tutorial! It includes many “sewing efficiently” techniques I want to learn. Clear, concise commentary, without superfluous chatter which can be so annoying in others’ videos. Thanks so much Suzanne! I’m looking forward to a deep dive into all your videos 😊
This is exactly what I was looking for. I like the thicker, better quality look
There's noone in the whole Internet who'd sew as neatly as you. Love, love, love it
yes indeed. congratulations to her.
Neat prep yields neat sewing. That's the main difference between her work and most of the rest of what you see on YT
The quality of custom dresses are so much better. I made a dress a while ago and the hemming, lining/underlining, zipper, etc all make the dress feel luxurious and nicely weighted.
Thanks for going through everything step by step. Helps a lot for novices like me.
I have to brush up my sewing skills again to make a Halloween costume for my son. =)
Best dress sewing lesson from Tafe
Hi I usually love to look on utube for dress making and I can say I really enjoyed your tutorial. This is the first time I am seeing it. Thanks
Just hit subscribe. I’ve been a little timid about lining things but you really explained it quite well. I would like to know how you line a top if a sleeve is going in. Dress is beautiful and Awesome job.
Wow, I’m amazed at all the sewing techniques used in this video and the attention to details outside and inside of your garment. You are a true example that home sewing is a better quality than store bought ❤❤❤❤
I am seeing a lot of linen dresses being made on RUclips. I shy away from linen as it wrinkles . But it makes a garment look very chic. I am hoping that linen nowadays has bamboo or something in it to minimize wrinkling. This dress is absolutely stunning...
Underlining is a technique l’ve rarely used - probably because l’ve always made a mess of it. Your clear instructions have inspired me to try again. Thanks for another beautiful make. 💕
I cannot fathom how you complete these beautiful pieces in a week, with you posting a new video every Friday. I'm amazed! Your work is incredible. I have so enjoyed going back to watch older videos to catch up since I began subscribing to you. ❤😍
I was totally mesmerised! A master at her work is a beautiful thing (or mistress if you’re pedantic about those things)
I am inspired to learn sewing. Beautiful dress. Please, more examples of shift summer dresses.
Lin here lovely job. Nicely executed. Like the idea of the lining sewn together with the main fabric.
Beyond all I wish you health love and happiness in your life Susanne !You make our Fridays even better!
Lovely 🌹 Lin.Been sewing my whole life and that zip lining is new to me!!Thanks
My first time to watch ! I learned so many new techniques and I’ve been sewing for 50 years. The details you took the time to include such as hand basting around the edges of underlining and darts make such a difference. I also will be including the zip facing. There were so many details that make it couture all the way. Thank you for sharing. I’ll be watching many more of your videos!
I am picking up sewing after nearly 30 years .First time I've run across "underlining". What a beautiful technique! You are certainly committed to detail. Beautiful outcome!
I am “super happy” with how well you sew! You are a marvel! I’m embarrassed to say I am a sewer in comparison and in the same company as you. I nearly clicked off when you hand stitched the lining fabric to the main fabric. I loath hand sewing! Look at what I would have missed if I had!! I ADORE garments that look as well on the inside as they do on the outside. You are a master! I am a new subscriber because I am bound and determined to learn at your elbow. Sis, if I learn how to sew the inside of my makes half as well as you, you won’t be able to tell me nothin’!! What a stunning bespoke dress. Bravo!
Wow! You really do a professional job. I normally just make quilts, but lately I’ve been making tops and pants. I am not as dedicated as you are. A little lazier sexist. I get bored pretty fast. Lol. I do serge my seams. I have French seamed pillow cases. I love that look. Thanks for sharing.
Susanne, I'm so thrilled that you've made this shift dress video as I wish to make some for the summer, as well. I also love how you didn't let fabric weight deter you. The finished dress is gorgeous on you!
Best dress video 😍 impeccable finishings
Exquisite as usual, beautiful finish.
Wonderful! Where did you get the pattern? What manufacturer and what number?
This one is my favorite video 💕
You are my favorite dressmaker. I like the way you construct your outfits, usually the whole front and the entire back separately and then finish at the side seams. I'd love for you to guide us through making a personal block so that we could try your method of designing clothes. Also, how do you make those thread loops for button and belt fastenings?
It looks beautiful on you Suzanne you always look so classy in all the things you sew, your sewing is perfect x
Love this dress with the pretty Spring time Look and Tie at the Waist really set it off. Everything flowed together so well, and love the way it turned out. I would watch this video again, so since you said that you will be definitely using this pattern again, make sure to let us watch and see how you finish the side seams, since others are asking about that as well. I CAN NOT WAIT to see your next video, I LOVE THEM ALL...
I'm so happy to see you and watching your nice works bring me positivity and trust 🙏😍.. From Algeria.
I love love your technique ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
That is a beautiful dress. I love all your dresses. And it’s such a good idea to pre- stitch the lining and to put bias binding to make it meet looking and comfortable .
Your work is excellent. And so neat everything matches up well. ❤️❤️❤️
Perfeição de trabalho parabéns
I love your videos. I have almost everything I need in terms of material to be able to sew the things you do, except for one. Patience.
I wish I had even half of the patience you show in making these!
Congratulations on another absolutely gorgeous dress
❤I love this dress.
wow this dress is amazing excellent job thank u somuch
Fabulous dress Suzanne 🥰
Amazing. I think you have managed to come to your own unique style of sewing. You really make everything look so simple and easy. Love your work. Thank you.
I don't know if your channel is still active, it doesn't look like it. But I have to say, this video on underlining is tremendous and one of the best tutorials on how to accomplish this task. Your fabric is gorgeous, and I am sure the finished dress was exquisite with such loving detail to excellence. Thank you for the educational videos!
Beautiful work! Underlining (sometimes called flat lining) is a rarely used technique that can work wonders and puts such a beautiful finish to garments. Personally, I'm not a big fan of iron on interfacing. It never stands the test of time and laundry for me. On neck facings I prefer to sew the shoulder seams of the fashion fabric and the interlining as separate layers, press seams open. Layer right sides together of the two neck facing layers and stitch around outer edge. Trim down the seam allowance with pinking shears close to the stitching line. Turn neck facing to right ride and press, rolling the outer edge slightly under toward the interlining side and matching the neck cut edge. Finish the neck as you did. This way the the neck is interfaced and the outer edge is nicely encased in the seam. Thank you for another beautiful garment video.
Oh, the time and detail you put into each and every garment is extraordinary. Thank you! I learn and am inspired by you!
i love this one and i will try this one soon❤❤❤❤
You have amazing skills!
Very nice finish and style and very inspiring. Looks great on you!
absolutely lovely creation. thanks for sharing. A whole nother level of professional.
I would cut the lining out on top of the fabric, but rather than marking both I would just mark the lining fabric once penned to the top fabric. I'm probably missing something here. It seems they are being sewed together anyway. Love the tutorial. I used to so a lot as a teenager (economic s) but havent a a lot since. Now retired I have a little time.
Always perfect
You have taught me everything I need to know to underline my clothes! I have to buy my fabric online, and I have some gorgeous sheer fabrics that need underling. Thank you so much for this tutorial!!!

Wow!, you are so gifted, you make it look effortless, once again an amazing job and simply delightful video to watch
Yo amo todo lo que hace esta Dama, felicitaciones...
Beautiful ! Suzanne the layer of interlining also compensates for modesty without bulk . Love it.
Wow! a lot of work was put into this dress and the results are beautiful! I love the pleats and your technique of basting the two layers together, you outdid yourself with this dress Suzanne!! Happy weekend!
It's a lot of work hand stitching, but it's so worth it, just perfect. What ditch length do you use for the last stage of sewing, I guess I mean, how many stiches per inch.
I just started a linen dress and will definitely use these techniques!
Beautifully done! I love your technique. I’ve always completed my darts this way but the way you install a zipper with a facing is great. Completing the front and back separately is also a great technique! Thanks for sharing!
Hi, I am always thrilled by the sewing that is so neat and the most beautiful results I have seen. Thanks for all your tutorials.
So well explained, neat and beautifully done .
Wonderful video but can I ask - when you do the felled seams after pressing and stitching can you see the stitches on the right side of the garment please? X
Thanks for a great video, lovely dress
Luv the dress, I'm learning so much from your videos.
As always just beautiful. You explain every step of the way thank you.
Gorgeous dress, beautiful, love it xx
Its absolutely amazing with a perfect fit. Love it!
Beautifully made and you the fit is gorgeous. Did you draft this pattern?
When you make the next dress, can you include pockets? (-Perhaps in the side seam)
Brilliant job ❤️
I love how you take ur time in the making... Good job💞
I love that too, sewing some things by hand, like the tacking part with the red thread lets everyone see just how much she LOVES Sewing! I love that too so much!
Beautifully finished inside! Would like to know what you did on the edges of the back slit.. Turned under and pressed, stitched? Where can we find the pattern please? Teally impressed with the clear explanation and concise filming!
I love your lessons so much thank you x
It would be lovely if you told us where you get your fabric. Always beautiful.
Love this tutorial but what is the fabric choice you made for the lining?
So talented
Beautiful
Absolutely beautiful, how did you finish the side seams of the dress, is it with overlocker or bias tape. You did a fabulous job.
