You have designed some lovely dresses, but this is my favorite, thus far! I think cutting that on the bias was just what that longline, slender dress was crying for to show it off to it’s potential.
One of the things I like about linen and other natural fibers is that they have their own character...that is; wrinkles, slubs, little bumps in the weave and color variation in yardage that you work with or lose the beauty. I love this pretty dress. Thank you for your hard work and for sharing your knowledge. You are wonderful!
Great video. Very easy to follow. I haven’t seen sewing techniques like these in almost 50 years. Thank you for the reminder of how we used to produce beautiful clothing on the kitchen table. I’ve been sitting on a glorious piece of linen for almost 10 years waiting for a bias cut pattern but have waited in vain. I can’t wait to start.
So interesting to see the comparison of the same pattern and fabric with one version cut on the bias and the other on the straight of grain. Thanks for showing that! They both look super cute.
I made some multiple panel pinch pleated linen drapes years ago and I swear every day I went in to work on them the length changed. They had to hang just off the floor. What a headache!! That being said, I love linen and your dress is beautiful!
I'm so glad I'm not the only one with the pockets thing!! It's such a trend so put pockets into any and every garment, but often I feel like it affects the fit a lot, dragging on skirts or gaping on trousers.
I have just made this dress in an Italian navy check linen viscose blend. Sooo pleased with the fit as I made the d-cup and the top fitted my shoulders and bust perfectly. (I usually have a gaping armhole with a sleeveless dress). Will make this again in a plain linen. Great pattern!
Wow - I haven't seen facing attached like that and it blew my mind. I am a confident beginner (as in I make many mistakes cheerfully!) and love this tutorial so much. Thank you!
Hello! I am about 52 seconds into the video and already saying WOW! I think maybe I could do this with all the information and support available. And, the dress is actually appealing and appropriate for me and maybe even my adult daughter! I’ve always enjoyed your videos and admire your skills. Maybe I will jump into this project. Okay, back to the video!
Just a quick heads-up. The bias cut must be exact and although it looks as though she worked without a ruled surface, I wouldn’t recommend the same technique if haven't done it before. Cutting on the bias essentially makes the fabric into “ stretchy” fabric. If the angle is even slightly off, the dress will never hang properly. That's where the real expertise is to be found. Measure twice, cut once. There are videos on how to lay out the fabric for a bias cut if they are not included in the pattern instructions. Good luck!
It's good to see you, Casey! I agree with you so completely about the pockets. I never put them in dresses, or even in gathered skirts where there is technically room. When I did put pockets into some lightweight rayon shorts I made, I found that my phone swinging around in there just annoys me, so not a win either 😂 Love the rust-coloured dress you were wearing towards the end of the video!
I recently bought my first ever top with boat neckline 😂. And I absolutely love it. I was just thinking about making a boatneck dress. So the second I saw this pattern come out i bought it ❤❤
I find a way to put pockets in everything I make. Why? Well, I need a place to put my un manicured hands. 🙌. Love the technique for sewing the bodice facings. I’ll try it next time.
Another great video Casey! I love the dress and your sew along... I'm SO with you on pockets in seam! I dislike anything that detracts from the style lines especially that could potentially add extra bulk in the hip area..
Beautiful! And, I am so with you on no pockets. Yes, it’s an unpopular opinion, but not every garment must have pockets. If they are going to drag the garment down or ruin the silhouette, I’d rather skip the pockets. 😃❤️
gorgeous, make a short version with just a little more Aline and it wil be MOD. so glad to see the method to attach the shoulders- wish that was more commonly shown as it is the best method!
I am never doing the burrito method again! I loved this facing construction so much. And no wonder my zipper was wavy -- I too let mine hang before installing the zipper, thinking the stay stitching would take care of everything! 🤦♀ Always learning...Such a beautiful pattern Casey. I'm going to have to make a long linen one -- yours looks like a vacation in dress form! 🤩
I thought I was so clever hanging it before the zipper install, haha! Luckily I was able to salvage it by removing the zip and just sewing the center back (it still slips overhead, thank goodness!) and the waviness is gone. Thanks so much for making it!!
Gorgeous dress. Excited about your move. Great opportunity to purge 😀. Can’t wait to see the video of setting up your new sewing room. Pace yourself on the packing!
I have never seen an invisible zipper installed that way- it is different from the instructions that come with the invisible zipper. But it looks like you have so much more control over the finished zipper, that I will try this next time I install one. [My granddaughters (8 and 9) think it is funny that we call them invisible zippers because you can actually see them inside the dress. I think they were expecting something akin to the emperor's new clothes.] You demonstrate and explain your techniques very well and your garments are just wonderful.
Wow,I just found your channel and I’m loving it!!! I’ve been binge watching before I turn the lights out, but in truth I want to keep watching for a couple more hours!! Haha! Thanks for such a great sewing/thrifting channel, two of my favorite things to do……..
I was wondering about you just this morning, Casey! Really glad to see you pop up on my feed 🫶🏻 I also noticed a comment you left on The Big Sew Along’s page - made me so happy to see some of my fave sewing YTers connecting 🤩
Excellent new pattern. Elegant but wearable and comfortable for summer. I have lots of linen that would work but the warm blue colour of your choice is very tempting. Your multi-cup sizing will really make a difference to the fit and gives me confidence. Thanks for all you do.
This dress looks fantastic on you. The color and the way the dress glides over your body are so flattering. Is this the IL19 linen from Fabric-Stores? I love their fabrics. Quality, price, and customer service are fantastic! As the wife of a retired US Air Force officer, we moved a lot during our marriage. Even though it’s exciting to move to new digs, it’s very stressful. Take care of yourself.
Yes, it is the IL019...it's so nice! I love their color selection. I also ordered some in a bright neon yellow/green. Have no idea what I'm gonna do with it, but loved the color so much!
Three things: Thing 1, I love your style esthetic. Thing 2, I am addicted to the Fabric Store linen--beware! Thing 3, when you are finished with your move, treat yourself by making a throw for your sofa out of the Textured Jacquard Scroll linen (IL002) I used 2 yards.
I feel like I haven't seen a video of yours for ages!! I hope you are completely well and excited for your move. This new dress is so lovely and you chose a beautiful colour. I want to look at the pics on your website at how the midi length non-bias dress hangs. You've been putting out some beautiful patterns! Thank you!!
Thank you, Faith! Doing really well! The long black version on the website was sewn with a crinkle rayon on the straight grain and it came out nice and flowy!
What a lovely dress ! Love the bias cut option 😊. I’m definitely going to get the pattern to make for our summer - we’re in the depths of winter here at the moment xx
Can you explain what you mean by tracing the pattern - it looks as if you trace the pattern straight onto the fabric and then cut out? If this is what you mean, are you using a tracing wheel and carbon paper (which sounds tricky on such big pieces) or are you eg using a friction pen? Thank you for your expertise!
Casey! Lovely pattern and dresses. Just bought it! Wondering if all versions on your website are bias cut? Also are all the solid color dresses (black, blue and red) made of linen? Is the long print rayon, by chance? Trying to identify the fabric and direction to take! Thanks ❤🎉❤
Would it ruin the hang of the bias-cut dress if I were to apply a slim line of interfacing to both centre back seam edges, underneath the invisible zipper, to alleviate waviness along the centre back seam? I'm not used to sewing bias-cut garments and am not having much success limiting a wavy seam in this area.
This is a beautiful dress! I would want to install sleeves tho (do not like my upper arms). Do you have a sleeve pattern that would be compatible or perhaps some tips to modify?
Wow! You’re a terrific advertisement for this pattern. Looks fabulous on you. Tell me, I’m 74. Would. It be possible to add sleeves to this dress? At my age, I pprefer not to show my upper arms.
The button-up shirt is my Byrdie Button-up pattern sewn in linen (bit.ly/psbyrdiebuttonup), and the peasant blouse is the McCalls 7969 dress pattern, chopped off to a blouse length sewn in a linen blend I think (I love it! amzn.to/3VH8HBp)
I will probably paint my new sewing room the same color. I really love working in there (and I get so many compliments/questions about the color)! It's great!
I'm curious about the way you laid your pattern pieces out. My high school sewing teacher always said to have the top of the patterns laid the same direction. Yours are opposite. Does it matter, or ? What do you think?
I think it depends on the fabric and the type of weave...this one is the same in both directions with no directional print so it can go either way (I think, haha :) As far as I can tell it worked out well!
I like this dress. However, it looks like there is a mistake on the waist measurement line for sizing. It appears the first number is wrong and it continues across the line. You might want to check that out. Thanks!
I got a donated dress recently and the zipper was such a ghastly color even my husband noticed, and he’s not that into color. It was a visible zipper. It got me wondering, when do designers choose a visible vs an invisible zipper? Is there some sort of rule or is it just preference?
I think it is down to personal design preference, and possibly that invisible zippers can be a little more "technical" to sew well. But with that invisible zipper foot, it is really not bad at all! :)
It helps when you put a lovely figure inside the dress! So simple and elegant on you.
How perfect. It will be lovely.
This style reminds me dresses I wore in the '90's, unstructured and chill but still flattering I think.
yes!! I love those styles so much
😊 I had that pattern when I was young
I love how neat all your finishes are.
So interesting to see the comparison of the same pattern and fabric with one version cut on the bias and the other on the straight of grain. Thanks for showing that! They both look super cute.
Beautiful dress! Cutting it on a bias really gives the dress a nice flow
I have been searching for nice ready made linen dresses this year and found nothing nearly as nice. This might be getting me back into a mood to sew
I made some multiple panel pinch pleated linen drapes years ago and I swear every day I went in to work on them the length changed. They had to hang just off the floor. What a headache!! That being said, I love linen and your dress is beautiful!
A perfect backdrop for a statement necklace!
yes! I need a statement necklace!
What a beautiful dress! Bless your heart having to pack and move! That is a big job. Take care of yourself.
Thank you! We are excited for the move...not so much the packing part haha :)
So happy to see you and wishing you wellness
I’ve been sewing for 55 years and I’ve never seen an invisible installed like that. That’s the way I used to put in a conventional zipper.
I love that method, no more miss aligning the zipper !
I'm so glad I'm not the only one with the pockets thing!! It's such a trend so put pockets into any and every garment, but often I feel like it affects the fit a lot, dragging on skirts or gaping on trousers.
You make such great points about pockets. Especially for bias cut dresses. I'm all set to cut out my third Ella! I love this pattern.
Beautiful dress, beautifully made by a beautiful lady.
Thank you very much for so beautiful dress pattern and detailed video. I was afraid to work with bias patterns, not anymore. 🌹🌹🌹
Absolutely beautiful Casey!
I’m going to make one for my daughter on the bias. I love the way it hangs. Thanks for the clear instructions.
Oh, I'm so happy to know that! Thanks so much for making the pattern! It sounds so pretty!
Wow - I haven't seen facing attached like that and it blew my mind. I am a confident beginner (as in I make many mistakes cheerfully!) and love this tutorial so much. Thank you!
Gosh, that bias cut is so gorgeous!!

I like the tea length dress especially since I’m 5’6. As a senior, our knees are all that attractive. I like the shape of your dress.❤😅😊
Such a lovely pattern. Thanks for all the tips. Hope you're continuing to do well and good luck with the move.
Thank you! Doing great these days :)
It's good to see you, Casey! I agree with you so completely about the pockets. I never put them in dresses, or even in gathered skirts where there is technically room. Dry nice. I have saved your invisible zipper installation method. Probably the best method yet.🎉
Great summer dress. I think it would look nice with a tee under it too when the weather starts getting cooler.
I recently bought my first ever top with boat neckline 😂. And I absolutely love it. I was just thinking about making a boatneck dress. So the second I saw this pattern come out i bought it ❤❤
haha awesome!! Thank you so much!
I find a way to put pockets in everything I make. Why? Well, I need a place to put my un manicured hands. 🙌. Love the technique for sewing the bodice facings. I’ll try it next time.
Haha that is a good reason for pockets!
Another great video Casey! I love the dress and your sew along... I'm SO with you on pockets in seam! I dislike anything that detracts from the style lines especially that could potentially add extra bulk in the hip area..
OMG you just totally cracked me up at the end of day one!!
Never thought of sewing interfacing to facing for finished edge! I will do that from now on! Thanks
Beautiful and simple classic!
Beautiful! And, I am so with you on no pockets. Yes, it’s an unpopular opinion, but not every garment must have pockets. If they are going to drag the garment down or ruin the silhouette, I’d rather skip the pockets. 😃❤️
The dress is amazing. But I would like to have sleeves too, as an option. Your patterns are amazing.

lovely finished project.
Very beautiful dress and looks fantastic on you!😊

Beautiful, job well done. Loved the zipper instructions. (I hate putting zippers in but will give it a try with an invisible zip!

Thank you! This is a really great color, the perfect summer blue! Fabrics-store.com has some excellent color options, too!
The dress is beautiful

Cute. I ordered one of your patterns. I guess I should watch the video about printing the pattern where are you moving?
I love it. It's a beautiful design and you look lovely in it!
Wow, what a beautiful dress! I love the bias cut option! Have just moved from overseas… my sewing machine has yet to catch up with me…..
Agree about pockets!!!
Glad I'm not alone! :)
So Lovely on You !!!
Lovely. Good luck with the move 😊
Gorgeous dress!!!!
Beautiful pattern, Casey!!
Thank you! 😊
Love it! I have a similar pattern w/scoop neck, but I can't get the darts right. I'm older with a saggy bustline no matter what bra I wear. Sad.
Can you explain what you mean by tracing the pattern - it looks as if you trace the pattern straight onto the fabric and then cut out? sewing that on the bias makes a big difference with a linen fabric. Thank you. Hope you are doing well.
Developing this pattern was my first time working with bias-cut linen and it is lovely! The drape is so nice! :) And thank you, doing really well!
This is a beautiful dress! I would want to install sleeves tho (do not like my upper arms). Do you have a sleeve pattern that would be compatible or perhaps some tips to modify?
Is facing as well cut on bias?
How long do you think this took you from cutting to finishing? I love this design! What an amazing staple.
Does this pattern have a projector option
you look AMAZING in this

I have the same feeling about pockets. I am thinking of removing them from a linen dress for the same reason, but I feared i’ll regret it 😂
What pattern and fabric is the top you’re wearing?
The button-up shirt is my Byrdie Button-up pattern sewn in linen (bit.ly/psbyrdiebuttonup), and the peasant blouse is the McCalls 7969 dress pattern, chopped off to a blouse length sewn in a linen blend I think (I love it! amzn.to/3VH8HBp)
Trying to find the dress pattern? I see all the patterns, but not the one you're sewing in the video?

Soz I’m nosy
I will probably paint my new sewing room the same color. I really love working in there (and I get so many compliments/questions about the color)! It's great!
