This is present on both X-T3 and X-T5 (latest firmware on both) I own. This is a big problem for me in AF-S. I turned on the distance scale (google how to do it in AF). I confirmed it did reflect Fuji's erratic AF behavior, i.e . when it was showing it was locking on 1.5m, it was 1.5m, and when it was locking on infinity, it was infinity, since I could see other areas of the image being in focus and out focus. It seems the wider the angle of the lens and the narrower the aperture, the more erratic the behavior is. Just try to focus with XF 16 1.4 at f/8 or XF 16-80 anywhere between 16 and 50 at f/8 on an object that is 10 m away (30 feet). Half-press the shutter button a few times. You'll see that the determined AF distance changes anywhere from 1.5 m to infinity. the problem is also present with wider apertures but to a lesser degree which is still a problem because the depth of field is narrower at wider apertures. In every case, the focus confirmation was positive. It is like Fuji uses a random number generator to come up with the AF distance . Maybe, it is not a bug but a feature - this is how one would put it in software development to be politically correct. :) At the same time,. at 80mm the focus was locking on the same distance for me. e.g. it was consistent. The back button focusing does not help - same erratic behavior. Now, regarding the back-button focus technique: Fuji's focus peak is not as good as the one Canon has on Canon R. X-T5 has better focus peaking than X-T3 but it is still not on par with the Canon's. Another problem is Fuji's focus check magnification is not that great to visually confirm focus either. Try to use it in dim light - it is almost useless especially with wide angle lenses. And, I have definitely tried all kinds of tweaks to various settings of the camera including shutter mode (mechanical, electronic etc...), focus priority, subject detection on/off, AF+MF on/off etc... It sounds like there is a fatal flaw in Fuji's software and it has not been fixed in both X-T3 and X-T5. I have read reports that it is also present in X-T4. Many people have been complaining the XF 16-80 f/4 was not sharp for them. I think partly it is because of the bad AF. Mine is plenty sharp for me when it focuses right. But when it does not, It's very frustrating! Now I am blaming Fuji for what I used to blame the user error. I could not explain certain shots being out of focus. Especially, when I needed to maximize the depth of field for landscapes. I think this might also be the cause of my birds-in-flight tracking problem on X-T5 when the focus does not stick and changes all the time - so some shots in a burst are in focus and some are out of focus (1/1000 shutter speed used for bigger birds such as pelicans). Also, I had a few out of focus shots when I shot a couple of events. Same random number generator? But it is a longer focal length as well. So I can't explain that one. So, here we go. I am starting to look back to Canon that I used to use. I am really missing its AF performance. Besides, Canon cameras are a bit smaller with their mirrorless line. I love Fuji's cameras and lenses but their AF makes so-so results with awesome equipment. It is good I don't make money on photography. Otherwise, I would be frustrated even more. Please complain to Fuji! They should fix it. Otherwise, they have to include a distance meter along with their camera to compare the distance meter's reading with Fuji's. Click the shutter button only when they are about the same:)
I know there are problems and I also noticed the erratic distance jumping in AF-S. But I just shot a wedding with the X-T4 mainly and X-H2 as backup. I shot over years with the X-T4 and never complained about autofocus. Even for sports it was nice. For the wedding, when setting the focus point right and when the tracking box was there, about 95% of shots were sharp. I saw a few complete misses on the H2 but nothing that ruined the event for me. Only since the X-H2S a lot of people are complaining about it the AF a lot more loudly. I have to say I would like it to be better in some situations but overall I am very pleased by the results and especially the tracking in the newer bodies. I mostly wouldn’t use af in landscapes anyway, as hyperfocal distance is simply the best technique, but when I did, and with a 50-140, my shots were sharp as well. I had the feeling that the erratic jumping of AF distance was more of a visual bug, than the focus really being off.
You are spot on in what you are saying, I own a X-H2, also purchased the 100-400 plus 150-600 lens for Bird and plane photography, have not managed to take a sharp image of a bird or a plane in four months.
Thank you, I was about to buy the xt-5 but, after reading some reviews, including yours, I am having second thoughts. Others have also mentioned that the focus peaking when in manual also has problems.... back to the drawing board, I guess. At least now I have reduced the LIST DOWN....
I’m having similar issues with eye autofocus on my X-H2 when shooting headshots. Up close it’s even better to see what the camera actually does: it focuses on the eyebrows instead of the eyes, while giving false positives on the eyes during capture. It’s giving these results with AF-C, AF-S, AF+MF (turned on or off), pre-AF (turned on or off) and release/focus-priority set to focus (on both AF-S and AF-C). Thank you for posting this video.
Like any other current cameras (Sony's, Canon's), eye box does not tell you that focus has been done on the eye, it just tells you that the camera has located the eye, so if you trigger autofocus it will focus where the eye box is. If you set the camera to not shoot if focus is not aquired (same option on X-T5; X-T4, X-T3, X-T2), then it won't trigger the shutter if not in focus, even if a green box is on the eye. The problem with a 40mpx is that it is very slow to read out all the sensor data in real time. As a consequence even if eye has been detected by the CPU, it must ask the lens to shift focus, then check with phase focus sensors (located on the sensor) if focus is aquired. And because the sensor is slow, so is the focus checking step, that's why it can't focus as fast as the 24Mpx stacked sensor from X-H2s, even if the eye box is always found in time.
Massive thank you for taking the time to engage, truly appreciate it. I really enjoyed reading your comment and you make really great points. I tried to search for as many similar challenges with cameras from Sony, Nikon and Canon and to be honest, I only found a few where the same challenge of getting a green box but ending up with a soft image was prevalent with the bird eye AF and that's because the subject is quite challenging to shoot and typically moves in front of and behind distractions. I definitely agree that there is no camera sensor that will give a 100% hit rate all the time (whether the box is green or not). The obvious challenge is a performance reliability with XT5 and XH2 because of the sensor. It seems to struggle even in scenarios that are really not stressful and that for me is a problem. Now given that it's Fujifilm's first attempt at powering such a large APS-C sensor (and the first camera company to do so) It's not the end of the world that the XT5 has some issues. There's certainly opportunities to improve or rectify the challenges. So would you say it is the processing power and technology needed to power the large sensor that is the stumbling block?
@@lostcreators my technical understanding ends here but I guess the Fuji AF problem has 2 causes : a technical issue related to the resolution of the sensor / the amount of data to process, and their software algorithms. I don't know if Sony's big sensor (A7RV) is as slow to read out as Fuji's 40mpx. But maybe Sony uses a stacked sensor, which would improve drastically the read performance. Anyway, considering that Fuji's AI-assisted AF has been quite bad for some years now, compared to Sony and now Canon, I think Fuji should have used a 30mpx max sensor, this 40mpx was not asked by users, as opposed to a better eye/face detection algorithm. They managed to improve the algorithm, but increasing the sensor resolution kind of cancels that, unfortunately. Whats is left is a better back screen refresh rate with the eye box, that's it....
Hey Mazin, you’re not alone, It is pretty frustrating to not have certainty when taking photographs because of the tools we use. I do believe over and above tweaking the settings, there are fixes Fujifilm can make in a firmware to fix this issue for us.
I agree with most of you. For a camera like the Fuji XT5 the autofocus and false positives is very disapointing!!!!! Fujifilm needs to fix this problem asap or it will loose many users. You certainly wouldn't trust it for work.
Thank goodness I have seen this...I am going crazy with auto focus problems...exatly this...the green square says I am Ok...but get the pix on the screen and they are dreadful! Let's hope they fix this PDQ
From my testing of the X-H2 thatI'm currently reviewing (for my YT channel), I haven't experienced this issue. I do have it set to focus priority in both AF-S and AF-C though. I should be getting my copy of the X-T5 this week so I'll be able to compare to m one copy of the X-H2s that I mainly use for video for now. Let's share our findings!
Hey Fred, I’m really excited to see your findings. Yes it seems that the camera default out the box is set at shutter Release priority and that switching to focus priority seems to help with the camera acquiring better focus. But I’m excited to test it for about a month over the Christmas holidays and see the results. Awesome channel by the way!🙌🏾 I’ve already started binging.
Nice video! And I agree with the points you mentioned, it is not yet on par with the other systems but It did get the job done for me in the shoots I used it for. I also did some tests with the AF+MF off and it did improve the results overall.
Thanks Thierry 🙌🏾 I’m a big follower of your channel and enjoyed the AF video you did of the XT5. The New AF system certainly has a world of potential and I believe these are just teething issues of a new and big APS-C sensor. At the moment it’s good enough for maybe styled photoshoots and portrait sessions but for maybe events where you don’t get many opportunities to retake shots, it doesn’t give me a lot of confidence. I think it will only get better with firmware upgrades and bug fixes.
I did a side by side comparison of the XT5 and the XT3 with the 33mm 1.4 lens in BIC camera in Tokyo not long ago. I was traveling in Japan with my XT-3 and was interested in upgrading to the XT-5 so I went over to BIC. I had the exact same findings in which the XT5 gave false positives. I photographed customers walking towards the display stand with wide area tracking (Fuji's version of the 3D tracking) and focus priority in AF-C mode. The hit rate for the XT5 was only about 15% better (roughly 60% in focus) than my XT-3 even though it showed a false positive AF. My main cameras the Canon R5 would have been at 95% hit rate in the same scenario. I hope this is something Fujifilm can fix in firmware, otherwise it's not really work the upgrade.
This is so interesting Mark. I didn’t have the XT5 to test for long but it left me feeling like your result are somewhat of a guessing game, you’ll only know how many you got after the fact. I find it a bit worrisome that we have not heard anything as yet from Fujifilm. PS. I hope you had a splendid time in Tokyo, One of the place I’d love to visit in 2023 is definitely Japan.
I agree that there is an issue with inaccurate feedback with the X-T5. Last week I shot a football game in broad daylight using the 50mm - 140mm F2.8 lens (current firmware installed) in continuous autofocus using both wide tracking and zone focus modes. During the shoot the camera focus box would turn green, indicating focus lock, but when I got home and reviewed the pictures, the "hit rate" was atrocious. I'm guessing I got only 1 in 5 shots that were actually in sharp focus. Extremely disappointing! I hope Fujifilm can offer some very specific instructions as to how to get better results, or perhaps issue a firmware update if there is a real problem with the current configuration. Most unfortunate because otherwise the camera is fantastic. As a side note, I've used my Fujifilm X-T3 in the same situation and achieved 3 or 4 sharp shots out of 5?? Very strange...
Hey Mark, this is exactly what I mean. The XT3 was not perfect but you always feel in control and aware, whether you missed shots or some may be soft, the EVF or LCD feedback allows you to know when you missed focus. And like you say, we just need definitive statement from Fujifilm on what the issue is and how we resolve it or if it is just user error, then advise on the best settings to maximise the full ability of the AF system and get some reliability.
Thats a real issue! Im glad I decided to get the XH2s. So far i have done 3 weddings and heaps of portraits and I find the AF about 10% better then my XT4. Its not always perfect but its very good and definitely reliable for a wedding. I will be definitely holding back on the Xt5 and XH2 for now.
Hey Elias, yes it seems that the issue is more with the CMOS 5 R sensor cameras. The XH2s seems to be doing well in terms AF performance for stills and video.
@@jaegerschtulmann Makes me think I’m not going to upgrade, for that little difference & paying $2500? I still am using the XT4 and have figured that getting the fastest lenses and using range limiter helps quite a bit! Now, if I can only get it back out of the shop, that I’ve had send it twice now for repairs! 😔
Fujifilm cameras, at least some of them, have everything I want from a camera but autofocus is where I am entangled. Why fuji why? Am I missing something? The Sony autofocus and fujifilm combined would be a dream come true.
You are correct as in my experience with the xh2 for bird photography, (perched) is the same. Focus confirmation cannot be trusted. I was using the latest firmware for the body and lens, (XH2 and fuji 100-400). If a firmware upgrade does not fix this very soon my camera will be going back to Fujifilm for a warranty claim as right now it is not working as advertised which is a shame as I love my XT-3 and only upgraded for the advertised new features.
Hey Alan, I’m with you. I’m really hoping there’s a firmware update in the horizon to resolve the issue because the XH2 and the XT5 are beautiful camera and certainly that 40MP opens up so many opportunities.
Agreed. Also doing birds photos and found the results getting with x-t5 not even close to what I get with my x-t2 and same 100-400 lens. Definitely feedback from EVF is misleading. Returned the x-t5 to B&H and keep enjoying my x-t2
@@lostcreators Something worth checking is AF-MF is set to off. Having it on disables focus priority. I will have to try that during the week and will let you know if that helps.
I had Fuji X-E2, X-T1, X-T2, X-T3, X-T4, X-H1, X-PRO2 and X-PRO3 and always had autofocus issues with these cameras! Standing me in the same place photographing a static object and taking several distance measures with camera’s autofocus (AF-S, smallest point, no pre-AF, I had set my camera’s Shutter Release/Focus Priority to Focus priority for BOTH AF-S and AF-C), I have different distances measured. Sometimes when taking a photo of a landscape or of a far building, in one measure the camera says that it is 3 meters far and next time it says it is in the infinite. Analysing these cameras’ AF behaver and because the camera measures the distance with the diaphragm closed to the selected f-stop, AF processor does not know the difference between what is in focus and what seems to be in focus because of depth of field. These errors are more frequent with wide angle lenses and closed diaphragms (great depth of field) than with tele lenses and open diaphragms (narrow or inexistent depth of field). With the latter the photos are practically 100 per cent sharp focused. Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus… All these cameras focus with the diaphragm wide opened. I do not understand why Fuji do it with it closed! Now I have a X-T5 and it seems that this camera became more intelligent and I noticed an improvement in AF, the measures have more consistency but I always have to check the displayed distance in the scale. You must be thinking why I keep using Fuji cameras. Well, Fuji cameras are the kind of cameras that we like use and feel in the hands, they are cameras that give us pleasure to photograph to in spite of their faults.
Fujifilm cameras are really a joy to use and despite their AF-C flaws, they still invoke a great sense of joy. I have been frustrated with some performance issues with the Fuji cameras but have stuck around because for stills and for what I shoot, they still just about get the job done but I love using them. Recently I’m getting more request for video (short or highlight video reels) and to be honest, fujifilm cameras are not the best hybrid. It’s 2023 and they’re IBIS is still nowhere near the competition. I think I will keep using Fuji for stills but I’m looking to Lumix as a potential for video.
Thank you for this. Video autofocus appears to be even worse judging from sample footage i've seen shared on reviews but somehow most reviewers to seem to mention it at all.
Hey Gui, thank you so much for taking the time to not only watch but to chat 🙌🏾. I am a big Fuji fan and want to see fujifilm compete on the same level as Canon and Sony. Sadly it doesn’t seem that the CMOS 5 sensor cameras are the solution. I definitely felt more confident using the XT4 and the Xt3 versus the new cameras. Fujifilm needs to deeply invest in revamping the AF completely because the support and love for the cameras is there.
I applaud you for this. That is the main reason I jumped to Canon. Fuji's focus hasn't been reliable and still not reliable even at the 5th iteration of the X series......
It’s true, the advancement and technology is out there and Lumix have proved it and now they have some of the most reliable AF in the industry. Fujifilm really needs to resolve this definitively.
Indeed. Not sure if you still have the XT5 and if the latest firmware improved reliability? Curious if this issue is also present in the XH2 or the X-S20
I purchased the XT5 from Amazon. The return/exchange date have lapsed, March 17, 2023. The XT-5 Continuous Autofocus does not engage both in Still and Movie. I am sure I have the correct settings. I must be missing something.
I can attest to AF issues with even the latest X-S20; particularly when using wide angle lenses stopped down with subjects clearly OOF. Fuji knows; they just need to correct this issue. :|
And it sucks because everything else about Fuji ecosystem makes creating photos or video so much fun and engaging, the AF issues continue to be a pain point and now even systems such as Panasonic have passed Fuji and are providing reliable AF in their cameras.
Saw Jerred Z’s video a few days after I received my XT5. I had a business portrait shoot a couple of days after and I did notice the problem while shooting. The evf and lcd will confirm focus by turning green, but when I review the photos thru the evf or lcd, either they are out of focus or soft. Is there a way to have this issue reach Fujifilm? This is so critical to have false focus indications. Starting to regret buying the XT5 instead of a7iv.
Hey Ulysses, I definitely feel your frustration because I was planning on getting the XH2 soon and I’m also feeling a bit disappointed with the results that a coming through from fellow photographers. I’m hoping it can be resolved in a firmware update, however even that is not ideal. A camera that was released 4 weeks ago should not be needing fixes to perform basic tasks. I think with more reviews it will be clearer what the technical problem is and hopefully fujifilm will listen and propose a permanent fix.
@@lostcreators To be fair, I did get some absolutely focused shots, but we are talking about the really dangerous false positive focus indicators that can be devastating during a wedding or a once in a lifetime event. And to be sure that it’s not a user error thing, I’ve shot with the XT3 before and I am familiar with Fujifilm cameras and had no problems apart from the slow AF. Plus, I was also using my a7r3A during the business portrait shoot and I had the same settings. My sony camera got sharp focus 95% of the time the entire session.
@@brianw6645 I checked on that too and switched to focus priority and even switched to AF-S with the smallest focus point, while it increased focus accuracy, it still missed a number of easy still subject. It is really alarming how the camera indicates focus with the little green box but getting soft images.
Jared mentioned in one of his comment replies that his camera was set on release priority. Can you check the setting on your camera? Set it to focus priority for AFC and then re-check this test. Would be interesting to know your findings. Thank you for making this video.
Hey Mark! Thank you for taking the time to watch and share, this is what it’s all about!🙌🏾. I was a bit unfortunate to not have plenty of time with the camera however I’ll have the XT5 throughout the Christmas holidays and will have done plenty different tests. I’m definitely doing a follow up and I’m hoping it was just user error.
@@lostcreators It do not think is is the user error. There is a reason AF-C exists- for fast shooting. If I have to wait until the camera focuses and the camera button cant even be clicked, that defeats the whole purpose of AF-C and all the claims of XH2 and XT5 for autofocus improvements goes to drain.
My first impression went your way, but there are so many settings that I had never encountered on other brands (not that I know many). The "continuous" focus setting are something else (plus the ability to set your own). The shooting priority that can be set to "when achieving focus only". The power selection (economy, normal and boost). I cannot say that I have tried this myself to validate, but I know the choices in setup are there. My choice in this camera includes the amount of time it is bound to take me to explore its capabilities before I start to get bored. I think I'm good for a long time. But I hope you have sorted your camera problem already. But in the end, not one is perfect, and the choice is always difficult. I think it goes for pretty much everything in life. Maybe we need to learn how to love it, or not.
I forgot somethings. I read Sony used to claim that their increase in focus points increased focus accuracy and/or speed. I would chose 425 points. 117 is good when you want to speed up your focus point selection. Also, pre-focus might not be a bad idea to have it on when the special need is there.
Interesting. I’ve just sold my XT3 with the intention to upgrade to the 5 later on in the year. Hopefully, whatever this problem is, it will have been resolved by then?
I certainly believe it’s software and as we’ve seen with the XT3 AF, I’m confident Fujifilm will have it resolved. For now, I’m staying put also because the XT3 is sufficient for my needs.
Hi! Having a problem with my XT3 camera. Started 1 month ago: when taking video for my "talking head" blog, at some time second or third 30minute video will stop before 30 minutes, just stop recording. Battery is still ok, no overheating. And the file is lost, not recorded on the SD card. If you push start again it will record video again and everything is fine. But every session at least one video is always lost. I have two SD cards - SanDisk 64 and Transcend 128. Don't know what to do. Very stressing... Do you have any ideas? Thank you in advance
Hi 👋. This is a design limitation of some of the fujifilm cameras and even other cameras across different manufacturers. It's a 30 minute recording limit. One way to resolve it is recording externally with something like an Atomos ninja V but that is kinda expensive. I just have the recording light in from turned on so I can immediately know when it the camera has stopped recording. It is frustrating, I agree and unfortunately its one of those things we have to work around.
I returned mine due to horrible hit rate on autofocus for Fuji XT5. Gorgeous camera with the unreliable autofocus. Don’t be afraid to express your findings. What are you apologizing for? It should be Fuji who should be apologizing for putting crappy autofocus in 2022. I really want to get into their system and one day I will. I am proud of the brand. But totally frustrated with their technology.
Hey Annara, I couldn’t have said it better. I am such a fan of the brand and really want to see it compete at the same level as Sony or at the very least just give us reliable focus that doesn’t make us anxious when using the cameras. I really hope Fujifilm does more to instil us with confidence when using the cameras.
@@lostcreators Yep - check out Omar Gonzalez Photography's just released video on this. Pretty good, definitely worth a watch. Seems to confirm what Ryan Ho said. I think the truth is, we have 2 separate issues. 1. False Positives - I would guess this should be fixable in firmware - as long as it's not a hardware generated false positive (seems unlikely). If it's a hardware false positive, I'm afraid the only fix is likely a recall. 2. Speed/Accuracy/Sensitivity - I think anyone hoping this would match Sony or Canon is just going to have to live with the disappointment - with a bit of tweaking it may match current Nikon or may only come close. They've been at this game longer and have far more resources to throw at it. Unless FujiFilm has a breakthrough I expect them to lag behind the big 3 makers by a generation, maybe two, on AF. It wasn't that long ago that we were thrilled to have 1 point very slow autofocus. It's pretty easy to become jaded with how fast things move.
I just tried the XT5 with a multitude of native Fujifilm lenses and shot 4KHQ HLG and when I went to go review the footage, I wasn't blown away by it. I checked all my settings and there was nothing wrong. So then I pulled out my GH5 and put on some native Panny Leica lenses and picked the same format and HLG......and to my UTTER SHOCK, the quality of the video that came out of my almost 7 year old GH5 looked better than this brand new Fujifilm XT5. I had re-review both camera footages twice to confirm that I wasn't loosing my mind but it is true. I don't.....I really don't understand how this could be. Furthermore, just as you said in the video, Fuji's autofocus gave me ALOT of out of focus shots or blur or focusing on the wrong points or areas; and once again I double checked ALL of my settings and they were fine. I've been shooting photography forever and I was very disappointed in the results. The Fujifilm simulations and when the camera does nail the shot, the photos look amazing but this camera doesn't inspire any kinda confidence in me nailing shots now......and I do also hate how easy it is to move the dials in the camera too.
Yeah the sad reality is that every sensor has a megapixel threshold and I think 40megapixels is more trouble than value. It’s way to heavy for even the new processor which is the core of many of the issues. The sensor, processor and lenses are not in sync and as a result will lead to a lot of false positives. I used the Canon R7 for a while and I think that’s probably the sweet spot. 30 megapixels, but Fuji shouldn’t have introduced a 40 megapixel, there was just no need for it and my old XT3 produces a cleaner image.
@lostcreators I've heard this countless times again and again and again about the older XTs having cleaner images and better focusing due to older lower Megapixels count and xtrans processor......and you just confirmed it. Honestly, nobody needs more than 26 Megapixels, unless you're cropping nonstop and blowing up and printing pics 🖨 to life size formats .....and even if you did that, the human eye 👁 cannot even digest anyways unless you stand back 10 feet from it......and that's just pure crazy talk at that point. All these "stats" sells cameras 📷 I guess........ but when it comes to actual use-ability in the field and real world use, you won't actually get that from all these mainstream RUclipsrs.......can most of them will never "tell it how it is".
I feel your pain. I’ve published a few videos about the Fuji AF being unreliable for professional use and i get torched by the fan boys every time. 😂 It’s not you!! The AF system is the same with a fancy new algorithm on top that is indeed giving false positives. I switched over to Sony this past summer and it’s been amazing, especially on the video side. There are a number of Fuji YT’rs that also recently made the switch to a different brand due to the AF issues. The T5 is an awesome camera for personal use, but I’d never trust it with a paying client. Keep up the great work!
Hey Randumb, Yeah you can’t say anything bad about Fujifilm if you don’t have bodyguards around you 24/7, even then you’re still not safe 🤣. Fujifilm produces stunning cameras that make for a beautiful user experience and produce great results. Unfortunately when it comes to professional work especially weddings etc, reliability weighs more than any other factor and Fujifilm need to still do more to give users reliability when it comes to the AF.
Test1: "FOCUS MODE = AF-C" + "AF MODE = ZONE" + "AF-C Focus Priority = Release" -> Out of Focus Face and Eyes Confirmed. Test 2: "Focus MODE = AF-C" + "AF MODE= SINGLE POINT" + "Number of Focus Point = 425" + "AF-C Focus Priority = Focus" -> Issue is not observed. Face and Eyes are Sharp. Test 3: "Focus MODE = AF-S" + "AF MODE= SINGLE POINT" + "Number of Focus Point = 425" + "AF-C Focus Priority = Focus" - > Issue is not observed. Face and Eyes are Sharp.
OMG! yes i have the same issue autofocus eye with XH2. I upgraded from XT4 to XH2 on Jan 27th. I updated to the latest body firmware and I have done 3 different studio photoshoots with XH2 and the RECOMMENDED (to resolve 40MP) XF 16-55 2.8 at various focal lengths (all the way up to F8) and as well as third party Viltrox AF Lens for X Mount (just for kicks). Out Of 3000 or so pics I have taken in the last week, so far i have NOT SEEN a single pic where the eyes and face are tack sharp. I use eye autofocus in continuous focus mode and I make sure to click only when I see the green focus ball on the eye. Still all the pics looked like they missed auto focus EXACTLY like shown in this video. Interestingly the Clothes are tack sharp in all the pics. My 26MP XT4 takes sharper eyes and face than XH2. There is definitely a focusing issue on face and eyes with XH2.
Unfortunately when we express concerns we get attacked which is rather unfortunate. The AF C issue with the 40MP sensor is a big concern. Yes the other camera manufacturers don’t have AF C with a 100% hit rate, no one camera is perfect however with Fuji, the issue is reliability AND performance
@@lostcreators I think i have nailed the issue. I had always shot with AF MODE = ZONE, AF-C, and Focus Priority = RELEASE. Today I changed the AF MODE to SINGLE POINT with Number of Focus Points = 425 and AF-C Focus Priority = FOCUS. I have Tested AF-S and AF-C. The issue is gone and the Face and Eyes are Sharp like they were supposed to be. So the Issue is Happening when you Choose AF MODE = ZONE or WIDE and AF-C Focus Priority = Release.
Hey John, yes I’ve also tried that. I’ve tried a variety of settings and combinations and they do improve the hit rate, however in instances where it doesn’t, the feedback still provides feedback suggesting that it did. Not always, but quite often.
Absolutely, I don’t think for my personal preference that sharpness is the ‘everything’ of a photograph. I tend to see that last when the images are engaging. But for paid work or perhaps building a portfolio, consumers and the commercial market works on a different standard which keeps getting demanding every year. The same way you need to have a compelling story or documentary to feature on Netflix but before that, you have to meet the camera/video spec requirements for the equipment you use. Content was also viewed on lowers resolution TV’s etc. sharpness has a great advantage too because it pushes images to a level of reality likened to what the eye sees and can make images even more engaging. Resolution is not the only thing, but I believe it’s a major tool for the artist to bring out more detail and richness in images to engage the audience more.
Are you guys experiencing a considerable lag from the time you press the preview button -> on your XT-5 until the image shows? I do! 1-1.5 seconds delay. Let me know. Thanks.
Hey there, apologies for the late reply. I hope you were able to get some clarity on the issues. I didn’t experience this but it’s also because I didn’t use the camera for long.
I completely agree with you and that’s why I’m holding off on buying the X-T5, to me this is unacceptable, how would you explain this to your customer if you shot their wedding and had so many out of focus shots. Someone that I know did the same test as “Jerred Z” but with the Sony A7-IV and had over 95% focus accuracy. Fuji needs to take a serious look at this and fix it.
Hi Enrique, Exactly. I think we spoke about this before and Jarred Z mentioned it as well that maybe tweaking some settings may improve the performance but it doesn't solve the overall problem. Incremental improvements through firmware is also not enough, when shooting events the stakes are just way too high to 'hope' the photos are in focus. While there's all this hype with the XH cameras and the XT5, I agree that fuji need to revisit the entire AF system.
@@lostcreators For an amateur/hobbyist like me, I’m doing just fine with the X-T4, if I get an out of focus photo of an alligator it’s not a big deal, but if you as a professional get out of focus images at a wedding, I want to see you explaining it to your customers, not to mention what it can do to your reputation and future recommendations, for the professional this is a very serious issue. But honestly, I have other problems that concern me a lot more than auto focus, if Argentina doesn’t win tomorrow, they're going home🤣
Actually Fujifilm cameras have been having a big big issue of auto focus for so long! but this problem doesn’t seem to be improved.😢 So I think Fujifilm cameras are not suitable for wedding photographers or action photography!
@@lostcreators The false feedback. Thanks for posting this video - has warned me off getting the XT5 as a faster, more AF reliable second camera to the 50s.
Hi Dan, that’s awesome. Did you check the critical focus on the eye? If you have another fujifilm camera like the XT3 or XT4 maybe do a side by side comparison to see if the XT5 image give crisp sharpness when using continuous AF with Face and Eye tracking on.
I have the same problems with the xh2... I sent it to Fujifilm Greece service and today I got the answer that they can't understand what the camera has !!!! Disappointment with Fujifilm...I do not know what to do...
I've been using the XT5 with various lenses. In simple light it focused on a pram, not the person standing beside it and facing the camera. Tracking faces it is simply hopeless. It tells me it has found the face, but it hasn't focused on it! I'm regretting my purchase.
Hello Simon, Yeah we need to see a firmware upgrade very soon. The Continuous AF tracking as well as the LCD or EVF feedback does not inspire confidence in the user and that’s a very big deal.
Yep I agree there is a problem. My images are soft and not tac sharp like my XT3. I have problems with static shots (afs-s) wonder if this is hardware issue?
Hello Andrea, I think it’s the AF system in its entirety. I watched the hybrid shooter review and a few others and while you see the two boxes tracking the eye and face, the one tracking the eye seems to be jittery and not constant. I know it’s just a wild theory but I think that may have an impact on the softness of the images as when you press the shutter, the eye AF my still be jumping around in tiny increments. This would explain why we see the green box on the eye but the images are soft. So probably the Algorithm that translates information to the sensor when looking for the human eye in the frame needs to be revised.
@@lostcreators my problem is slightly different. It’s in afs-s mode not afs-c. So I’ve not even ventured into focus tracking. My images are totally off, as in back focus like the good old days of DSLRs
I’ve just been using the XT5 for a couple of weeks and got the same issue! The camera is not fit for purpose and I’m looking to return it! Poor show Fuji!
1st one to comment! 😊 Regarding the false positives, did you set your camera’s Shutter Release/Focus Priority to Focus priority for BOTH AF-S and AF-C? The out-of-the-box default settings is with Release on both AFS and AFC. Also, turn off AF+MF
🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🙌🏾 Thank you for taking your time to watch and Thank you for the recommendation (Pinning your comment). Yeah I shot with it using straight out of the box, I had one day with it and unknowingly, when I looked at the images, everything seemed to be sharp. , I had set it on wide tracking and switched Face eye auto on. So I think the results should improve in terms of the hit rate. I’ll fortunately have it for two months this time so I’ll definitely try with few varying settings.
@@lostcreators you’re welcome! I think the shutter priority is the missing piece in the AF puzzle. Setting both AF-S and AF-C to Focus Priority while turning off AF+MF ensures that the shutter will not go off until it is definitely in focus. Try it out, it has been working for me on the XH2 (I came from both XT2 and XT4 and from my experience, the XH2 is on a different planet to the previous generations in terms of eye AF, though it is still not fail safe.
If Ryan is correct about the settings and it sounds like he is. Then as long as that provides results that are at least equal to an X-T4, then I'll I continue with my switch to Fuji X-H2s, H2 or X-T5. (probably the H2s) I'm still committed to switching to FujiFilm - I just can't lug around my LF and MF gear any more. FujiFilm is the only company that is committed to the APS-C size and I just don't want to lug around a full frame system.
Yeah I'm having this same problem with the XH2. It's extremely disappointing. What makes it even worse is the shots are not difficult by any means but the camera is still missing while reporting the false positives. I'm hoping Fuji will address it soon or I'll have to find something else.
You hit the nail on the head. We don’t expect the AF to be perfect however being that’s it’s “newer and better” the last thing we expect is for it to struggle tracking and nailing focus is basic lighting and compositions. In 2022/2023 there are many cameras that can adequately achieve this so it’s worrying that as fujifilm users, we are still complaining about this.
@@lostcreators surprisingly enough the a7iv had eye AF issues that weren’t fully resolved for almost a year, focusing on eyelashes instead of the eye. It took until the 1.10 firmware update to fix it. This is just to say, as terrible as these issues sound, even Sony messes up with AF on their new camera releases. Hopefully Fuji will do the same.
I use X-T3 for years and its exactly the same. Focus confirmation never guarantees spot on focus to 100%. Imo that's not possible at all. But what i've heard from serious tests is that the percentage of hits is substantial higher with the T5 than T3/T4.
I agree that false confirmation is not unique to just Fujifilm, I’ve seen people even experience some false confirmation with AF C Eye Auto on the brand new Nikon Z8. Now I agree even on my XT3 I do get some images that aren’t critically sharp even when it says face and eye detected but in my personal experience, my T3 had less of these false confirmations than the T5. The hit-rate is definitely better on the T5 but the issue I was referencing was not specifically the hit-rate but the frequency of false confirmations and for me, my T3 has slower AF but also less false confirmations. And to be honest, conditions, lighting, contrast and subjects are different in different shooting scenarios and so it’s impossible for every “serious” test to cover all conditions. I haven’t used the T5 since the firmware update so I’m hoping it’s fixed because overall, it is a better camera than the T4 and T5.
I don’t know what they did to the new cameras like the Xs20 and X M5, but the AF is so much more reliable. Reliable AF should really not be a 2024 tech challenge for any manufacturer. Fuji need to get over this line once and for all.
Hey Bernard, typically the bigger 40MP sensor will produce more noise and the alternative is to introduce more light into the composition. In terms of applications, DxO Raw has performed miracles on my images. Try that and Topaz Labs on trial.
I don't think I'm going to purchase another Fuji cameras until some of these inconsistencies and brand identity issues are resolved. I loved my X-T2 when I bought it. But I was coming from a Canon t6i... With that camera I learned that I couldn't trust even the single point AF. My little green box would light up, and focus would seem good on the back screen, but when I got home and viewed my images on the computer, I could see that the focus was actually just in front of or behind my subjects face... Like hair. Or shirt collar. Or leaves. And that isn't where my AF point was located. I learned to baby that camera and loved the image quality and analog, tactile experience, but I got in the habit of shooting about a dozen frames of the same subject just to be sure I nailed focus on one of them. My X-T4's single point AF is blazing fast and much more reliable, but the video AF is almost as if there is no pdaf, and the face/eye detection only works when it wants to. For $1600 to $2500, this should be worked out. It's crazy to me that Fuji requires a stacked sensor to get reliable subject detection and tracking. The X-T5 is just a 40mp wishbone to FujiRumors. I love like 80% of the X-T5, but it fails in ways that simply forces me to hold onto my money.
Hey Ryan. I completely agree. When we look at the industry standard, it's baffling that we are still complaining about the same AF issues with Fujifilm. And of course no camera ecosystem is perfect but in the AF space, Sony, Canon Nikon and now Panasonic have really instilled a high level of reliability that gives the user confidence and we are simply asking for the same. We are not looking for more megapixels, the 26 MP sensors are plenty, we are not looking for more speed, the XT4 was already in competition with many out there, we are simply saying making the AF especially for Face/Eye AF and generally AF for video reliable so purchasing these cameras for professional use can be more appealing.
I only had it for one day, and I do appreciate that a day is not enough to give full review, I used it in 3 different shoots on the day with about six hours of use. I’m certain (as indicated by a few recommendations in the comments ) that tweaking a few setting with resolve and greatly improve the performance. My feeling is that no matter what you shoot, if you’re shooting with wide tracking, face on eye auto or even just face on in continuous focus, the camera should not struggle keeping an image in focus or just sharp
It works well with video however the major limitation is it can only shoot 4k up to 30fps. But is has a headphone and mic Jack, it has great stabilisation and can shoot in Log. It also has focus peaking that works really well. These features for me make it a good camera for video as well.
Hey Deon, yeah the Xh2s is pretty amazing and I think the issue seems to be with the CMOS 5 R sensor camera, likely because there’s just so much tech that’s new with this sensor versus 26mp (BSI) sensors where more is understood.
I mainly shoot landscapes and I have found the xt5 auto focus much worse than the xt4. Until there is a firmware update (hopefully), I will go back to my xt4. Not happy.
I read an article where they conceded that the 40MP sensor has a low AF calculation frequency than the XT4. It’s kinda disappointing but also positive because it means it’s a software/firmware away from performing as we had hoped.
I have only had my X-t5 for a few days of intermittent use. However, I have had focus issues that I never had with my X-t3 ***and these issues are with manual focus and its focusing tools.*** I shoot primarily, macro and dial in precise focus. I am at a loss why I am getting grossly out of focus carefully focused macro shots. My bad maybe or maybe not. Not only am i not displeased with you, I have just become a subscriber.
🥳🥳🥳Thank you so much for subscribing. I actually never looked at whether the focus issues exist when shooting manual, that's a bit worrying. There's clearly something not quite right or at least different from what we are used to in the Fujifilm cameras. I'm hoping the next few days and weeks with more tests, we will be able to understand what the problem is.
Update 12-1-22 Today I redid all the tests I did yesterday checking manual focus. The X-t5 with the Fuji 30mm macro and my trusty Fuji 80mm macro performed flawlessly and the 30mm macro equaled or slightly outperformed the Fuji 80mm macro. My best guess is the the brand new X-t5 had contact point issues that resolved after a lot of lens swapping.
Came from a XT30ii, never had a single OoF shot - using the same technique on XT5 and single focus point where relevant, and still getting a solid 60% of my shots completely OoF, this is insane …. Blamed it on user mistakes but glad to see I am not alone. AF is simply unreliable …
It’s definitely not what we expected given how long the other camera systems have had reliable AF. Fujifilm prioritised nice-to-have features and didn’t give us the bare minimum in terms of reliability.
@@lostcreators indeed and that’s a shame - I found out today that using EFCS sort of helps, as if part of the overall blur / OOF aspect stemmed on the one hand from the AF mechanics and on the other hand from shutter-induced micro movements (which were not noticeable on 26 MP sensors). That’s already better, but man is the AF lacking that’s insane. I sold my xt30ii right away thinking that xt5 would now be up to speed, boy was I wrong … indeed, more marketing material than real usable content ffs
I think I may have a good idea exactly where the AF is failing and this was actually once a problem with some Nikon cameras. The AF is not the entire problem, I believe it’s the algorithm and AI that pin points the eye. The Eye Auto Focus seems to register critical focus as anywhere around the eye area and not the eye ball as opposed to maybe Sony where the Eye AF confirmation is actually indicated that the eyeball is in focus. I hope I’m right because if this is the case then the AF may actually be corrected definitively with a firmware upgrade
I agree, and It's really frustrating because we are in the 3rd AF firmware update for the new cameras and the AF is still not where it needs to be. Fujifilm really need to give us a permanent solution and not these cosmetic "fixes".
Even worse for me is that focus peaking highlights don't disappear with half shutter press. XT5 is my most expensive paperweight to date. I will wait for a firmware update, but otherwise will be selling this so called 'professional photographers camera'. It really sucks. :(
Hey Simon, I agree and I feel your frustration. The XT5 build quality is more of the XT30. It’s really disappointing how much opportunity was lost with this camera.
I tested the X-H2s. AF box while tracking felt choppy and lags behind moving subjects. Isn't the smooth sticky experience like on the A7IV. While the AF is wayyyyy better than any prior Fuji camera it still left a sour note. Expected it to be on the same level as the rest, but felt more beta or 1.0 generation. Which for Fuji kinda is. Maybe X-H3/T6 will finally catch up.
I truly can relate. With Fujfilm it always feels a little late to the party. Reliable AF is no longer ground-breaking tech, it's a minimum requirement and it just feels like the CMOS 5 R and S are just not quite there..not yet anyway.
I haven’t gotten a chance to test it after the firmware update released recently. Apparently it has resolved the issues with the AF especially AF-C but in all honesty, the A7c is a great camera and I don’t think going from that to the Fuji will be an upgrade in any way. The A7c is honestly really great and the XT5 video capabilities are decent at best
@@lostcreators My switch to Fujifilm is solely for the film simulations. It is something that has caught my attention since I discovered its existence. I really want to have Fujifilm, but I understand that in some aspects it is a throwback (such as AF). thanks for answering!!
I think definitely when shooting at lower shutter speeds, a monopod or tripod can help (provided that the subject is also not moving) but because we were shooting outside as well with no ND filter, my shutter speed was always around 1/1000 so freezing movement was not the issue. The issue is that there seems to be a disconnect between lens, sensor and processor or a delay in information where the lens acquires focus, the box turns green and the feedback through the EVF is that the eye is locked but when you press the shutter, the images is sometimes soft, sometimes even catches the nose or ear. For me this seems to be an AI software issue. But I’m confident it’s one that can be resolved.
Hey Roger, I hope you’re able to enjoy better performance with the firmware update. The camera has so much potential, just needs the AF issue to be resolved.
I have to agree. I shoot BIF with the 100-400 Fuji lens. I get good tracking and focus in the EVF but on review so many blurry shots. I have AF+MF off. I have tried Mode 2,4 and custom. Subject detection on and off. I have yet to take a photo that I didn't need to use Topaz to make it usable. Very disappointing. Going to look ay an R6 mkll tomorrow. I'll keep the X-T5 because it's so much fun to shoot with. But not for fast autofocus. Thanks.
Fujifilm cameras are really unique and just offer such a fun user experience and that’s why it’s rather frustrating that they’re not able to give us the minimum industry standard. It would be great if they could finally give us camera sensors that were reasonably reliable.
I think I have nailed the issue. I had always shot with AF MODE = ZONE with AF-C and AF-C Focus Priority = RELEASE, and the Eyes and Face are not sharp and looks like missed focus. Today I changed the AF MODE to SINGLE POINT with Number of Focus Points = 425 and AF-C Focus Priority = FOCUS. I have Tested both AF-S and AF-C. The issue is gone and the Face and Eyes are Sharp like they were supposed to be. So the Issue is Happening when you Choose AF MODE = ZONE or WIDE and AF-C Focus Priority = Release
your assumptions are wrong. There is no issue with the tracking or af-c. The problem lays in the overall autofokus system. Every Fujifilm camera can't produce a reliable AF. The more wide angle the more occurs the problem. The more you close the aperture the problem getting worse. You can find it on a X-T1 until a X-T5. Even a X100F or X100V got this problem. It is better with AF-C and worse with AF-S. Check your own camera while using the Distanz scale in your camera. Use a zoom or use a prime lens. Use wide angle and an aperture of f/5.6. Watch the distance scale. Every Fujifilm will produce nearly 30% focus errors. The problem getting better with normal angles or telephoto. Or open your aperture. But try to focus with a XF18-55mm or XF16-80mm at wide angle and f/5.6. It is a catastrophe
Seems like a real problem. I've tested my X-T5 and as shown in the video I always got correct auto focus on screen. As I don't shoot portraits often I didn't notice this issue however when reviewing my pictures. I'm curious if this issue is also present on the X-H2s. Just to know if it's due to the algorithm or the new sensor used.
I have a feeling it is the new 40MP sensor, from the in-depth reviews on YT, it appears that the XH2s AF performs well, the common denominator between the cameras where this issue is prevalent seems to be the CMOS 5 R sensor. Im hoping we can get clarity from Fujifilm.
I have exactly the same problem with moving subjects… it show the green Box ok and lock on the eye, but when reviewing the focus is random : hair, neck, often behind subject. Totally unreliable AF for Professional Work, I am so sad about that, this is my first Fuji Camera and I will probably need to send it back.
Hey Benjamin, I completely understand your frustration. I’m sorry your first fujifilm experience is so frustrating. What I do know is that the firmware updates on previous x trans sensor 4 fixed MANY issues we were having with the AF and I’m hopeful fujifilm will fix this issue as well. Keep well.
100% and that’s one of two issues. The first is that the new focusing system has been marketed as a massive improvement on previous generation sensors and it doesn’t seem to be the case. The second is an issue of false feedback. While the AF in the older cameras was far from perfect, the feedback was accurate. You would get a sense when shooting even in high bursts that you didn’t nail the focus or it lost the face. With the CMOS 5 r cameras it appears to be providing inaccurate feedback where the EVF and lcd are showing accurate face and eye tracking however when you look at the images, a fair amount is either out of focus or the focus was not critical and as a result, the images are soft. This makes it unreliable and frustrating when you’re shooting and don’t have time to open up images on an iPad to check focus or hit rate. I do hope it can be easily resolved with a firmware update.
@@lostcreators It's crazy how people today are telling the truth about the camera. Influencers in the past would just say the X-T4 or X-T3 were great autofocus cameras compared to the competition, which was not true - not on continuous autofocus. Now that more people use Fuji, you can't really bend the truth.
Simply solution: Boost on, fokus prio on AF-C and AF-S, AF+MF OFF ( if ON there is a hidden fallback to release prio and this was the fault by Jerred Z), AF-C setting 2 (gepard) and all AF issues are gone 😉.
Nah Man Fujis marketing duped us. I will not upgrade. Your point on the focus box between Xt3 vs xt5 is such an important observation. Kudos for that man. There must be a patented problem somewhere. How can That camera still be so bad? Not even the XH2s is any real life better. Maybe they should just upgrade the evf on the xt5 and the rear panel then you can at least pic up on the Focus in camera and try to retake if its still possible.(first kiss 1 example) The must haves are not always retakeable and actually most paid work only have 1 take and have to move on. At nearly 40K the xh2s is criminal and if we keep buying it they will keep selling it.I really love the sooc images but hate sweating bullets over focus. For that money I will wait six months and get the A74 and never worry about focus ever again. Post my be longer but just until you learned your files. Thank you again for the feedback video.
Hey Riaan, you hit nail right on the head. That’s really all we want, a camera that doesn’t make you feel anxious when shooting once off moments, a camera that doesn’t distract you because you’re stressing over sharp images when you should be focused on catching memorable and unique moments. A camera released at the end of 2022 should have AF that’s at the very least on par with a Sony camera released 4 years ago and we still not getting that. An overhaul of this AF system is so far the only way to instil confidence and for the money we are investing in not just the camera but lenses and accessories, we deserve a bit better from Fujifilm.
@@jrperezphotography thanks for your interest, I agree with you, AF is way better than the XT3. I shot a couple full-days 'run and gun" with the 4 and it just felt way snappier and responsive and i do feel my hit rate was better, especially in low-light conditions where the 3 is very very bad. i said it before I just want an xt3 with avg to good AF but most importantly predictable AF. I need to know my Camera's parameters. all my previous bodies and different brands have a weakness but as you use the body you can tell which situation it generally struggles with and prepare for it. With the 3 it is out of my control I cannot predict cause what seems like a good XT3 situation today is bad tomorrow. I have to overshoot and it takes time to work through the files. Even with the xt4 shooting headshots in the studio at F8 the images go from extremely good and nearly too sharp to soft and unusable OOF. I love the files but cant live with AF. At nearly 40K the AF need to stick.
I totally get that shooting at the widest aperture on any lens in any system system reduces the successful hit rate, I’m not even arguing that fujifilm is worse, I’m saying for a new processor which is faster, it’s not keeping up with the AF lock feedback and any changes or refocusing is not communicated in the feedback, the box remains green even when the focus point is lost, giving false positives.
@@lostcreators it has been greatly improved w the new firmware update..so it should be at an "acceptable" level of confidence for photography right now
The auto-focus is awful. I’ve since put on a manual focus, Voigtander, 35 apo and the images are quite good… really great image quality… but auto focus is a major miss on X-T5 so far.
Hey David, that’s exactly why I’m a bit disappointed as well because we love the fujifilm image quality and colours, but without a capable AF, the camera system isn’t viable.
🤣🤣Slow down, there’s still hope for the XT5. It may very well be new tech bugs and snags. The 40MP sensor is a whole new ball game for APS-C. Let’s hope a permanent solution gets proposed by Fujifilm.
@@Nayson Good idea. Maybe they will solve climate change by the time the x-t7 is ready for sale. And then, of course, maybe the places you photograph will be under water by that time, making it more likely that your next camera should be an under water camera.
@@richardlevy3278 man. Now I’ve got to wait on the X-T8! In all seriousness, I’ve been rocking a T-2 for 5+ years, it’s still ticking and I’m still getting good shots with it. Sometimes I think about upgrading the body but with the pandemic and the state of the economy I’ve not been able to justify it. I do lust after the X-Pro 3 though, part of me wishes I picked one up when they were new because they are stupidly pretty but at this point (3 years in to its shelf life) and with the well documented foibles with the OVF sucking if you want to shoot with wide angles and the back LCD being a point of failure I’m happy to wait for a refresh. I’m not sure it needs to be made from titanium either, that material choice keeps prices high. Go back go magnesium like the rest of the X-Series.
I have had in my Fuji film XT5 now for about five or six weeks. I've missed a couple of shots here in there but overall it's really good. No problems at all comes down to a little bit of photography skills I suspect but don't let that get in the way the truth yeah I alwaysTake people's videos with a grain of salt and in this video lots of salt because I can tell from how he holds the camera that he's not particularly great at Photography. Can I just say you need to actually learn how to hold a camera for a start before you start commenting on whether a camera is actually good at focusing or no I teach Photography and the way you hold a camera would be the last way I would teach anyone how to hold a camera and as for the focusing well I just shake my head in disbelief you're not a great photographer and maybe Photography is not your go.... Pretty harsh, I know, but just calling it as I see it
I do appreciate your point of view. It’s not harsh at all. You know the saying “Those who can’t do, teach”…seeing as I’m a bad photographer, maybe I should just teach photography, like you.😊
@@lostcreators Sorry for my comment, it was probably out of contacts but I’ve seen a lot of comments about the T5 not being able to focus. There’s a couple of things you need to learn is the different focus mates as well and learn how to back button focus because that will really help with the T5. The other thing to do is do shutter release. And change design as well to single.I find this actually gets the camera focus a lot more accurately. There are also certain lenses but don’t focus as well in the Fuji range and it is working out which lenses don’t work as well.
I definitely agree. I am very familiar and comfortable with the menu system from Fujifilm and I also agree that there’s no such thing as a perfect camera. My argument was the feedback. I know every camera will miss focus sometimes but the software is the bigger challenge. Maybe it’s the readout speed of a 40MP sensor that delays the information from lens to sensor to the feedback on the screen but it’s frustrating if what you’re looking at tells you that you have the subject and when you check on a laptop, the images are softer. Fujifilm needs to update the software because of you can’t tell while on site that you have nailed focus, I wouldn’t want to rely on it for events such as weddings.
@@lostcreators Your friend Jared says he did "probably like 6 or 7 portrait sessions". Yet does NOT show any of those images from these " professional sessions' he supposedly did. I beginning to really dislike all this mirrorless bullshit I have the Sony7riii and same thing happens ... I saw reviews on the Canon r6ii which has the best auto focus as r5 but is not just about auto focus when these Auto stuff also change your exposure for no reason when you recompose. It is annoying.
To be honest Fujifilm system is great and offers a lot. Even the lens line up and price is hard to beat. It’s a bit frustrating seeing the other camera manufacturers solve AF issues and excel like Panasonic. I’m hoping the upcoming firmware updates great improve some of the challenges.
learn the camera before you put this type of bad information out there. You do not know what you are doing. Set all of the perimeters right you will get good results stop misleading the people you cannot work with a camera for a week or even two weeks and think that you will be able to get it right with the learning curve and the technology that it have…!! do you have two or three people complaining about something that it is thousands 100s of cameras out there.. 😂
Hey Robert, I certainly appreciate you giving your input and adding to the conversation. Where I differ is you assuming that the XT5 is a different camera altogether. It’s certainly a new sensor, but the menu, settings and interface is in keeping with the last two generation of fujifilm cameras, cameras i and many photographers in the comments are very familiar with. I think you may have rushed to comment without understanding the core of the argument. In any event, we are not always going to agree and in order for us to grow as photographers but also share our experiences with the manufacturers that provide us with these tools, we need to assess all sides of the conversation. Thank you for taking the time to watch.
@@jrperezphotography I think it would be helpful. If the Fuji guys would come out and tell us how to set up the camera properly to get the best photos! I’m sure Canon and Sony work right out of the box, so why can’t Fuji?

@@simon359 I looked at the new Sony which the media justifiably rates so highly. The A7 runs over $5200 for the body and two great Sony prime lenses. And it's considerably bulkier and heavier than the X-T5. So are the Canon cameras. I can definitely understand the need for dependability of autofocus tracking for people who shoot sports, animals and weddings and other events where it's unacceptable to have to call clients and explain some of your best shots of moving subjects are out of focus. For event photography where your subject is on the move, and are shooting in burst mode, yes, you should certainly consider the more expensive cameras that are far too expensive AND heavy for me to consider. Your ability to price your work according will also, no doubt allow you not give a second thought to price, and as you are not out for a long hike or walk, the weight will not be a deterrent either. But not everyone is out there shooting weddings or models walking down a runway, or birds taking flight, or dogs at a dog park. So, you need the autofocus continuous tracking tools, well, you need them, and should buy by the Sony or a Canon. I bought a Canon and used it a lot before it was stolen. I took the Canon with me on global trips, but it was certainly not something that I always had with me and often didn't have it around my neck or In a 3 to 6L pouch on my back often enough to say that I had with me all the times I would have wanted to reach for it. It was too big and heavy for that. And I regret that a lot. Yes, you may need the tools that make Sony right for you. But continuous autofocus tracking is the be all or end all for all of us. So many of the comments that lay into X-T cameras with a vengeance seem to discount the camera based on that one tool. For those of us of us may not need or reply on continuous tracking might find the X-T5 more satisfactory purchase. Beyond that, for some of us who aren't doing event photography with the challenge of moving subjects, the more affordable X-T5 allows for the addition of not one but at least two of the newer and faster f/1.4 primes. If you need the tracking, of course, you ... NEED the tracking. But I think it does the public a service to insinuate that everyone needs is going to lose out by not having reliable continuous tracking autofocus. My wife for example does a lot of landscape photography. Yesterday I was looking through her library which grows in size considerably every day, seven days a week. As I looked photo library, and I skimmed through thousands and thousands of photos yesterday, I couldn't find a single shot that would benefited from continuous autofocus tracking. And what seems certain to me is that it would be highly unlikely she'd be out there photographing every day, which, in fact, she does, if she had to use the Sony instead of a lighter and less bulky camera. For those of you who don't have a need for that tool, don't let everyone put off the X-T5. By the way, I don't have any connection to Fujifilm, or make any money directly or indirectly from them. I'm just voicing my reaction to the incredibly huge hubbub that that this issue has created both in RUclips and in places like DPREVIEW. It seems a little out of proportion for those of us who share the needs as some of you do.
I've been using the XT5 with various lenses. In simple light it focused on a pram, not the person standing beside it and facing the camera. Tracking faces it is simply hopeless. It tells me it has found the face, but it hasn't focused on it! I'm regretting my purchase.
Hey Simon, that's the song we are all singing regarding the AF, it's in some ways a step backwards. I also believe there was no rush for the CMOS 5R sensor to be deployed so soon. A bit more testing and interrogation would have revealed these issues in the development phase. But we are here and hopefully a firmware upgrade will resolve our pain points.
At the same time,. at 80mm the focus was locking on the same distance for me. e.g. it was consistent.
Have the lastest XT5 firmware update help to improve reliability? I believe it is v 2.0?
Hey Dennis, it’s also frustrating that Fujifilm are not really saying anything or assuring us of a firmware update in the near future.
@@lostcreators Fuji did announce recently a firmware upgrade is coming for X-H2 and X-T5. I guess the new announced April 2023 summit.
I have the SAME issues with my xt5, my bosses have kept telling me my work is out of focus, and I didn't realize or agree with them until this video.
@@lostcreators Thanks man! #OneTeamOneDream 🤘🏻 ;-)
I have the same issue.
Fujis aren’t intended for sport photography is probably why 😂 you’re using the system for something it’s not intended for haha
Only 10%better than the xt4 with a stacked sensor is a crime! Any Sony or Canon from 3 years back still focuses better than any Fuji.
@@jaegerschtulmann
Makes me think I’m not going to upgrade, for that little difference & paying $2500?
I still am using the XT4 and have figured that getting the fastest lenses and using range limiter helps quite a bit!
Now, if I can only get it back out of the shop, that I’ve had send it twice now for repairs! 😔
Fujifilm cameras, at least some of them, have everything I want from a camera but autofocus is where I am entangled. Why fuji why? Am I missing something? The Sony autofocus and fujifilm combined would be a dream come true.
🥹 Just imagine! The beauty and retro design of Fujifilm combined with Sony AF…the world would make so much sense.
@@lostcreators Exactly!
@@ulyssessison9474 Were you using release priority or focus priority?
@@brianw6645 I checked on that too and switched to focus priority and even switched to AF-S with the smallest focus point, while it increased focus accuracy, it still missed a number of easy still subject. It is really alarming how the camera indicates focus with the little green box but getting soft images.
I hope Fuji is listening. Hopefully something that can be tweaked.
Hello Emil, I am very hopeful. Maybe a firmware update because it’s a stunning camera.
Looking forward to a video with this change in place. Holding off on upgrading for now.
Just bought a new XT5 and a 33 1.4. Extremely disappointed. Your results mirror mine.
Good video - more eyes on the problem is a good thing.
Hey Vincent, yes I think whatever the reason is for so many of us experiencing the AF challenges, we need Fujifilm to clarify the issue.
Your thoughts on this are relevant and quite good. Well done. :-).
Hey Tom, thank you so much for watching. 🙌🏾
OMG! yes i have the same issue autofocus eye with XH2.
Do you have AF+MF enabled? Omar indicated that it may be causing focus misses.
Hey John, yes I’ve also tried that. I’ve tried a variety of settings and combinations and they do improve the hit rate, however in instances where it doesn’t, the feedback still provides feedback suggesting that it did. Not always, but quite often.
What about photography images back in the 90s and 80s and so on where it wasn't sharp but great photos.
Yes I am having a problem with xt5 out of focus issue
Actually Fujifilm cameras have been having a big big issue of auto focus for so long!
but this problem doesn’t seem to be improved.😢
So I think Fujifilm cameras are not suitable for wedding photographers or action photography!
Same problem with the GFX 50s. Very frustrating.
Is it the false feedback or the AF not locking on to the eye and face?
@@lostcreators The false feedback. Thanks for posting this video - has warned me off getting the XT5 as a faster, more AF reliable second camera to the 50s.
I have xt5 I tried to do a similar test but it works well and gives no problems
Hi Dan, that’s awesome. Did you check the critical focus on the eye? If you have another fujifilm camera like the XT3 or XT4 maybe do a side by side comparison to see if the XT5 image give crisp sharpness when using continuous AF with Face and Eye tracking on.
I have the same problems with the xh2... I sent it to Fujifilm Greece service and today I got the answer that they can't understand what the camera has !!!! Disappointment with Fujifilm...I do not know what to do...
I’m sorry to hear that. I truly believe that APS-C has a sensor sweet spot around 26 megapixels. The more pixels are problems than they’re worth.
Regarding the false positives, did you set your camera’s Shutter Release/Focus Priority to Focus priority for BOTH AF-S and AF-C?
@@ryanhoviolin I echo these sentiments. Setting both AF-S and AF-C to Focus Priority while turning off AF+MF really did the job for me!
@@sirmarlondenon2497 yup, the only downside is that the burst becomes more laboured and slower
If Ryan is correct about the settings and it sounds like he is. Then as long as that provides results that are at least equal to an X-T4, then I'll I continue with my switch to Fuji X-H2s, H2 or X-T5. (probably the H2s)
I'm still committed to switching to FujiFilm - I just can't lug around my LF and MF gear any more.
I second that! AF on the T5 is much more worse than AF on the T3/4.
I have the same issue with the autofocus on my X-T5 and mysterious green box. My patience is running out.
I don’t know what they did to the new cameras like the Xs20 and X M5, but the AF is so much more reliable. Reliable AF should really not be a 2024 tech challenge for any manufacturer. Fuji need to get over this line once and for all.
Anyone know how to reduce grain effects on my photos with a max Iso of 800
Hey Bernard, typically the bigger 40MP sensor will produce more noise and the alternative is to introduce more light into the composition.
@@lostcreators exactly!
How long did you test the X-T5?
I only had it for one day, and I do appreciate that a day is not enough to give full review, I used it in 3 different shoots on the day with about six hours of use. I’m certain (as indicated by a few recommendations in the comments ) that tweaking a few setting with resolve and greatly improve the performance. My feeling is that no matter what you shoot, if you’re shooting with wide tracking, face on eye auto or even just face on in continuous focus, the camera should not struggle keeping an image in focus or just sharp
@@lostcreators and what lenses did you use? I am gathering info about the subject because I want to do some tests myself.
Is this only with working with the video or also with just shoots?
It works well with video however the major limitation is it can only shoot 4k up to 30fps. But is has a headphone and mic Jack, it has great stabilisation and can shoot in Log. It also has focus peaking that works really well. These features for me make it a good camera for video as well.
XH2s not my experience, this camera has only been a joy to use coming from 2xXT3 bodies. will buy a second one as soon as my last XT3 is sold.
I have same problem with my x-h2s. There is a problem with the new AF system.
I also have huge problems with autofocus on the XT5 an many lenses.
After 6 months, has anything improved? I am thinking of buying one but my current camera is a Sony a7c which rarely fails to focus
It could be related to handheld. In focus ones are just went good because light at that moment was good with shutter speed. Use monopod and repeat.
Your experience is the same as mine. It's very disappointing. I updated firmware last night, and hope to see better performance today.
Sadly coming from Sony as I wasn’t keen on design. The fujifilm is miles away. 😢
I have to agree, Fujifilm has made massive strides but are still not where LUMIX and Canon are and certainly miles away from Sony.
Keep well.
I did all the possible firmware updates on my XT5 without any improvement, in the end I sold it and promised myself Fuji NEVER AGAIN
Still a big issue a year later.
This issue is not new. Face detection has always worked on all X, E, and H cameras. The problem is that it will not track very good.
I’ll try them out at my next shoot and let you know.🙏🏾
To think, that RUclips wisdom dictates that phase detect auto-focus is the holy grail of Auto-Focus….
Hmmm, who knew…
🤔
Oh no! I was to buy the xt5 just in this moment and now I see this video 😢 I am weddingphotographer and need Autofokus...this is so disappointing
I have the same problem with XH2
Buying Sony A7iii instead now :)
Without Batterygrip, without me 🥺
If you are constantly shooting at 1.4 or 1.8..yes..good luck
I returned the camera, problem solved. Back to Sony, I go.
Who here is waiting for the XT-6?
🤣🤣Slow down, there’s still hope for the XT5. It may very well be new tech bugs and snags. The 40MP sensor is a whole new ball game for APS-C. Let’s hope a permanent solution gets proposed by Fujifilm.
Firmware update hopefully 🙏
I’m thinking X-T7
Mine focuses fine.
What do you shoot?
@@lostcreators Your friend Jared says he did "probably like 6 or 7 portrait sessions". Yet does NOT show any of those images from these " professional sessions' he supposedly did. He's holding the camera with one hand and recording the LCD screen(most likely with a cell phone) with the other hand. All while shaking the heck out of the camera! Like Really?!! Who the heck would expect a tack sharp photo in these conditions. But you go ahead and believe his "tests". ( Rolling eyes)
These are fixed after a firmware update
Oh shit and I just sold my Sony gear... seriously F_ _ K
@@lostcreators seems 3.0 made things a lot better
learn the camera before you put this type of bad information out there.

I think it would be helpful. If the Fuji guys would come out and tell us how to set up the camera properly to get the best photos!
I’m sure Canon and Sony work right out of the box, so why can’t Fuji?
@@jrperezphotography
I would give it a little time, the XT4 was out a while before they upgraded the XT3. I hear all the camera makers are doing firmware updates now, Fuji lost that big advantage over the other manufacturers.
Right now I’m having other quality issues with my XT4.
Just another reason I may sell all Fuji and go back to Nikon FF. I like Fuji glass, but AF always below others standards WTF Fuji
Without Batterygrip, without me 🥺
🤣 I totally get you!
