Lauri Allan Törni (28 May 1919 - 18 October 1965), later known as Larry Alan Thorne, was a Finnish born American soldier who fought under three flags: as a Finnish Army officer in the Winter War and the Continuation War ultimately gaining a rank of captain; as a Waffen-SS captain (under the alias Larry Lane) of the Finnish Volunteer Battalion of the Waffen-SS when he fought the Red Army on the Eastern Front in World War II; and as a United States Army Major (under the alias “Larry Thorne”) when he served in the U.S. Army Special Forces in the Vietnam War.

Valhalla Class of 65’ His Legend will be told throughout time.
I've studied his life. This man was a true bad ass hero!!!
One of the better RUclips videos about Thorne/Torni. A few errors occurred. Torni surrendered to the US 17th Airborne Division, and then was turned over to the British as an SEP at the end of WWII. He escaped from Finnish Maximum Security Prison 3 times before he was pardoned by President Paasikivi. Holger Pitkannen was not just a former member of Osasto Torni, he had been Torni's executive officer (XO) and his most trusted friend. Read my book, "Soldier Under Three Flags" or Mike Cleverley's book, "Born A Soldier" to understand Torni's incredible life of adventure.
Thank you
All his medals can be seen today at Suomenlinna war museum. I've seen many American tourists wondering who is this man with two purple hearts and an iron cross. I took pictures of Lauri's medals this summer, but I can't post any of those here 😢
Excellent history compilation of an incredible person.
A Finnish Legend! I have no doubt he would have survived Vietnam if this accident didnt happen. RIP.

Suomi poika - Hyve !!!
love it!
Sounds like ''born with his head in a vice'' for Pete's sake! This guy never got out of the cycle. Not once.
Thorne also contributed to found those troops consisted of "soldiers without greencards" which included cubans from the Pigbayincident, norweigans scots as well as thais.
These troops took the missions that not even the MACV s would undertake..
They usally went by the name of the cobra companies.
The story is told by a norweigan vietnamveteran in the book, known as the purpleheart, sadly its distributed in norweigan only, as far as my knowledge goes.
And pls disregard my rusty english since its not my nativelanguage
I studied his life also sog must should been movie
4:36 Sniper Simo Häyhä
He's dead
Yep, another Finnish legend!
@@shainshartershwate7421 no shit. He died at 2002 for natural reasons
Hero
experience in high altitudes. c'mon where did he get that experience
Suicide missions
Did he volunteered any information as to how many IF ANY , atrocities he committed as a member of the SS ?
stfu. He was a anti communist hero.
The SS didnt "commit atrocities"
None, he was not that type of guy.
half of the French Foreign Legion and most that fought in the !st Indochina War were SS and German Army from WW2
He was a man of action, by all the descriptions of him that prevail at least in Finland, but apolitical. Some have suggested that there was nevertheless a personal reason for him to hate the communists due to the loss of his hometown during the winter war.
He isn't usually described as a very ideological person himself, however.
