I have a bay window (5 total) with vinyl siding around the windows. I bought 5 garden boxes to install under each window. Will a stud finder find the studs and can I just install the boxes directly over the siding or do I need to go through the process of removing the siding all around first?? Seems like a chore. Advise.
Hey Laura and you could just install but I would worry about water damage without being flashed correctly. Also vinyl really expands and contracts so putting a screw through a piece would likely cause issues. Ik it seems like a lot of work but the correct way usually is. The stud finder I used in video did pick up studs through sheathing. Franklin is a good brand also.
If you remove one course of siding you will be able to see where siding was nailed. It should be nailed it to studs, also but joints of sheathing indicate a stud. Look for nailing pattern on sheathing. On the outside of windows opening you will have a king/Jack stud, then cripples underneath that should be 16 OC. Hope that helps! I have some siding bulging under the window on the 3rd level is there a way I could maybe just open the window an push it in with my hands from the window? It seems to be bulging from the top portion of that particular row and just in a small section of that row.
Hey maybe would help but usually if the siding is bulging its due to nail placement. If it’s not nailed into studs the siding can separate from your wall overtime. Just be sure and be careful hanging out of the window trying to fix. If you know any carpenters I would call and see if they would help you out👍
