- Floating Window Boxes With Hidden Brackets, Easy Install! These french cleats are strong and hold the boxes firm. No more ugly brackets under the window box or causing rust stains down your siding.
Great idea I hope it works for me!!!
Hi Nick, this worked perfect, just make sure you have enough clearance at the top of the cleat mounted to house, there needs to be enough room to slide the cleat mounted to the flower box between the clapboard/siding and the lower cleat. I was super excited to see how nice this system worked!! Let me know how you make out 👍
Good idea.
It worked for me, clean look 😊
Genius idea
Thanks Maggie, It works really good 😊
Great success!
will this french cleat take the weight of dirt, flowers and water? I guess yes but it looks very fragile. If it will least years its very impressive and thanks for shoving.
Hi Marek, So far so good, one season down lol. The weight is dispersed along the complete cleat so I believe it will last for years, also they are a composite material 👍 Thanks for the feedback 😊
I would think a bracket or two attached to the underside of the window box would help support the weight as well.
French Cleats are quite strong. However the weight of the soil in the wooden box will put great amount of stress on the cleat. However the box is removable and can occasionally inspect it and simply remove and adjust as needed. I have used french cleats for hanging all kinds of things in my workshop. Great posting!
French cleats are extremely strong when done correctly. A proper French cleat will hold many hundreds of pounds
Did you find studs or just screw right into the obs?
This was an old house so it has pine boards under the siding, you can use wall anchors for the installation if you're worried about the screws pulling out.
Is it ok to drill holes in vinyl siding ?
Hi Joan, its good to put some silicone calking around the hole during installation for extra protection.
TY. What is the name of the plastic board you used and did you have to cut it to get the angle?
Hi Jo, it's composite board that you can find at any big box store and yes it will need to be cut at the 45 deg angle.
Hey Eddie, I have cheap siding. How do I install so that the bolts don't rust or cause water to seep in? Great job, this looks like the way to go.
Hi Peggy, I highly recommend you use decking screws so they don't rust and you can use a silicone sealer to cover the screw heads once counter sunk, and also put a bead is silicone along the top and sides of the cleat mounted to the house. Make sure you pretrial all holes so you don't crack the siding. I did these for my daughter and she loves them, she even ran drip lines to each one lol. Let me know if I can answer any other questions for you, and let me know how you make out 😊
Thanks Eddie! I'll get back to ya' when I'm finished.
@@peggyscott2180 Awesome 😊
@@peggyscott2180 Hi Peggy, did you get your window boxes hung?
@@EddieCarrara1 well sort of...I've made the cuts and a friend's coming to nail it all together. Prat for me please!!
Do you think this would work for 72" window boxes? I also noticed you had another piece of wood on the bottom of the box. Is this necessary so it sits even with your french cleats?
Hi Andy, this would absolutely work with 72" boxes, and yes wanted the boxes to sit semi-straight so I added a shim at the bottom of each box. Keep me posted on how you make out. My daughter loves the setup, easy to take down in the winter.
How can i mount this on a brick house i love the idea for my parents house
Hi Anthony, You'll need to get a cement drill bit with screws. Here is a link to what you'll need amzn.to/3wda3rW
But you still need to make a hole on the siding!?!?
Yes Agnes, you'll need a few screws to hold the cleat onto the siding.
Cleaver idea
Thanks Marsha 😁
Do you have a link for purchasing? Or where did you buy them?
Hi Danielle, I wish I did but you can look on RUclips on how to make French Cleats. It's just two pieces of wood cut at a 45deg angle. If you know anyone with a saw they can make them for you 😊
What was the size of the wood did you use? I’m debating if I can use 3” wood to do this? Thanks for the info.
@@DollsandEverythingElse1x3" wood minimum . I personally prefer 1x4s
I have a vertical siding 🥲
Hi Nene 😊 Perfect! The French cleat will work even better with vertical siding, you'll have better drainage between the box and the siding.
