  • The controversial Dharavi Redevelopment Project is once again in the news with a new survey being undertaken in the area. Residents from Dharavi and other parts of Mumbai have raised objections to the project. Opposition parties have said they would drop the project in its current form if they come to power in the upcoming elections.
Why is there such objection to redeveloping the largest slum of Asia? Our Mumbai editor Prachi Pinglay-Plumber speaks to Hussain Indorewala and Vinod Shetty about the project.
Hussain Indorewala is a teacher and activist. He is an Assistant Professor at the Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute of Architecture in Mumbai, and is pursuing his PhD in Sociology at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. Vinod Shetty, B Com, LLB, is a human rights lawyer, practising in the Industrial Court, Labour Court and High Court of Mumbai. He is the honorary founder director of Acorn Foundation (India). Acorn’s Dharavi Project organises waste collectors and rag pickers who are the backbone of the city’s recycling industry.
