Watching these videos has actually made us shoot our dissertation film in 4:3 for narrative + aesthetic reasons

It's a shame how low the view count on these videos are. Wanted to leave a comment to let you know for an aspiring film maker and film school student. this helps a ton!

Because people who enjoy film and those who create film are a different breed.

Hey! First of all I want to say thanks for the great video and the good explanation with examples. I really want to use 16:9 as well as 21:9 in one film I'm currently editing but I am wondering how to achieve this effect (editing in FCPX), the footage is all shot on the same camera with the same lens tho. Is there any way you can help me?
    Kind reagards,
    Cas

You cannot Change aspect ratio from 16:9 to 21:9 in any recent software...as both are from different base aspect ratios. For eg you cannot fit as wide screen aspect ratio in regular 16:9 screen. If You do so, the borders & background will get black bared. Maybe it is only achieved through some vfx effect but not by ratio change effect. You can change from 4:3 to 16:9 or 1:1 to 16:9 but not to 21:9.

16 9 e is in a editing software 1920 x 1080 dimension, 4/3 is different ratios in cinema. If you wanna do a Wes Anderson-like 4/3 which is 1.33 with 1.85:1 top ratio would be 1380 x 1076. Or if you wanna do the classic 1.37:1 academy ratio it would be 1440 x 1020. 🙂

Basically animate two black bars on both sides moving left and right and maybe mask out the hands

I guess what I should take away from this is that you gotta use the right tool for the job. I like the analogy that a wider aspect ratio can EMBRACE the audience versus a taller image towering over people, in an intimidating sense. Maybe its just me but I really don't like too much letterboxing because I almost feel like I am being cheated from the film, like I'm not getting the full image but I don't get that feeling with a 4:3 picture.
