What's behind ASEAN's latest tilt towards China?

  • ASEAN's position on US-China rivalry has tipped towards Beijing for the first time in recent years. That is according to results of a survey by the ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore, released earlier this month. CNA's Otelli Edwards speaks to Mr Choi Shing Kwok, director and chief executive officer of the ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute, as well as Emeritus Professor of Sociology Lau Siu-Kai from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, to find out more.

@@angusyoung1448 And you failed Psych 101. There's limited credibility with surveys. Something as simple as FRAMING - how the question is phrased can radically change answers even if it's the same question. You can look up examples online. Not just framing, but even what questions came before this and what tone they set can also radically change responses. How far down the survey the question was and how much fatigue had set in, recency bias - meaning what big news happened in just the couple of days before relating to the issue and many more factors can radically change results. How did they correct for bias? How did they select a representative 2000 out of a pool of 600 million? They don't say. If I'm doing a survey on unemployment and I go ask people in CBD during lunch hour, everyone is employed so I'm not getting reliable results even if I ask 2000. It's a biased sample. And the chances increase when it's only 2000 out of so many different countries, demographics, industries. If you go ask in a port with filipino fisherman, you'll get a 100% tilt towards US. That's what I mean when I say you tell me what results you want, and just by controlling my sample selection, question framing, location, when I ask it, etc I can create those results.

A few months ago, Vietnam and China signed 37 agreements related to their sea disputes. When asked why, the Vietnamese government official just replied point blank "We trust China more than the US." CNA's report on ASEAN's tilt towards China is valid, largely because of US support of Israel in the war in Gaza. If water cannons are so bad and unforgivable, I would imagine the hundreds killed during the Philippine-American war using real bullets would've been a grim reminder of that unequal relationship. I think the Philippines is right about its claims in the WPS, but I can also understand China's moves in light of US involvement. This is a bigger geopolitical fight, one that should've been resolved through bilateral talks. If Vietnam could come to an agreement with China, why can't the Philippines?

Singapore, the smartest country, as well as the most successful one in ASEAN, has been playing smart geopolitical balancing games between super powers for decades, for the maximum benefit of the country, without being squeezed and sacrificed as cannon fodder by the US or China.
Filipino people always look at the success of Singapore with envy, and wonder why they can't replicate the best practices in their homeland and why their country is still deeply trapped in US colony mentality without a clear way out.
Truth hurts. A smart leader plays smart geopolitical games and invites American and Chinese companies to build factories in order to generate jobs and increase revenue, while a clueless leader easily gets emotional like a kid, often is played by geopolitical players as chess pieces, invites foreign military to build bases in order to generate tensions and increase the risk of conflicts, and sacrifices the country's development and trade.
Japan and S. Korea can sit down for negotiations and cooperations, despite of their long time disputes over the sovereignty of the Liancourt Rocks in the sea between them. That is political wisdom and diplomatic maturity on full display.
Other countries such as China and the Philippines can definitely learn from S. Korea and Japan to manage their difference on South China Sea, Taiwan, MILF or whatever, and develop their relationship.
Now Even the leaders of Vietnam and Malaysia are much smarter, more resilient and pragmatic than P-Noy and BBM. Now the Philippines is the only ASEAN member that foolishly puts itself into current awkward position of either losing face or breaking stability in ASEAN.
Soon, even Laos and Cambodia will become richer than the Philippines. The Philippines will compare better than only Myanmar.
