I feel as though the point Ryan was making in his video was missed. He was saying that because many people think of e-bikes as regular bikes. They treat them like normal bicycles when they should be treating them more like motorcycles. He's not saying e-bikes themselves are more dangerous, he's saying the attitude toward e-bikes by the general population is more dangerous. That's a distinction you seem to be leaving out of your video.
Now THIS is how an internet debate is supposed to go! Very good points were raised, compared and debated and there were no nasty, unfounded or ignorant accusations made by anybody and people listened, respectfully, and then added their opinion of belief, again, with nothing nasty, accusatory or defamatory by anybody. Plus, all sides took note of and agreed with most of the safety issues raised by both parties. Wish other people and debates, discussions eff on the internet went like this. No to have always! 😊
You keep saying to treat the ebike like an ebike, but also want motorcycle gear and indicators to be used to mitigate the dangers. From my experience most ebike riders don't even want to wear a full face helmet because it feels like overkill. I found all of Fortnine's points to be valid and accurate with no agenda.
Thanks for watching for leaving a comment! I said if you want to ride your ebike like a motor-vehicle then you should wear appropriate gear and comply with state regulations, which usually involves registering your ebike as a moped/motor vehicle and equipping it with turn signals, head and taillights, brake lights, etc. Whether I say it or not, it's the law so really you can disregard what I have to say. I also said Fortnine's points were valid and we should heed them. There is an agenda to every video, otherwise why make them? My claim that Fortnine had an agenda was just a creative attempt at pointing out his request that the self-righteousness of the ebike community stops. I mean he clearly says it at the end of his video. At the end of the day, you and everyone is completely free to do as you please. My voice will only reach a certain type and number of individuals who are concerned about their well-being and the well-being of people they care about. I personally don't care HOW you want to protect yourself. If you want to stay protected, motorcycle gear seems to be the best option right now. If you have any other suggestions I'm open to considering them. Thanks again!
Fortnine’s points were technically valid, but only if you assume that the only way you ride your e-bike is among cars keeping up with traffic. He’s comparing an e-bike’s least safe way to use it with a motorcycle’s only way to use it. If you just ride an e-bike by avoiding streets with no bicycle infrastructure, it vastly improves your safety.
Motorcycle gear come in various levels of protection. For an ebike lower levels might be sufficient. I have riding pants with CE level 2 armour for knees shins and hips. It looks like a regular denim jeans and may be good enough for a slide at 45 mph. It´s not full race leather but it should do the trick for ebikes and in many cases for a motorcycle. It´s similar with footwear. Motorcyle gear may be a relatively cheap way to get protection. A full face helmet might feel like overkill until you find deep scratches on the chinbar after a fall. I think it is a good advice to use one. The decission is up the individual. As far as overkill is concerned there is a saying in the motorcycle community: "dress for the slide not for the ride". Some do, some don´t and couple of those who don´t suffer severe road rash. BTW: In Germany there are motorized two wheelers called "Mofa". They are allowed to go at a maximum speed of 25 km/h (around 15 mph). Helmets became mandatory due to fatalities in the past. Most Mofa riders don´t consider full face helmets as overkill anymore. Cultur may change for ebikes too.
This is a great response. It’s both respectful and puts things into a more balanced perspective. I have a lot more respect for people who primarily ride a motorcycle than drive a car, because motorcyclists definitely know that if they get in a crash, they’re in for a world of hurt just like any cyclist or pedestrian they may hit. Sure, it’s less green than cycling, but it’s still more green than gas cars. Ultimately for me personally, I don’t see the practicality of riding a motorcycle except for the thrill it gives since I want to dress for the destination, not the journey.
Thank you so much for watching and for leaving a thoughtful comment. I agree with your points. Riding a motorcycle safely requires a much greater level of awareness and is relatively greener than a car. Being able to dress for both the journey and the destination would be ideal - now just to figure that out. Seems like Engine Hawk is on the right track?
Whether riding a motorcycle is greener than riding a car really depends on the bike and the car. Some motorcycles use more gas and get dirtier when the rider gives a lot of throttle. Many also produce more noise than a car. I am a motorcycle rider and I try to be responsible with it.
@@maxlutz3674 Ya, I learned about that after I had posted this comment. With the smaller engine of the motorcycle comes less...things to prevent as much CO2 output...for lack of better words to describe it at the moment.
@@maxlutz3674 Thank you for watching and leaving a comment brother! I appreciate that you’re a responsible rider. Motorcycles are so much fun. I may be getting one down the road.
@@ex0stasis72 The Co2 output depends to a large part on the rider´s behaviour. I ride a liter bike with around 100 HP peak power. Depending on the operation of the throttle I can ride it with a gas consumption between 3l per 100km and 12l per 100km. Some modern bikes have throttle by wire. That allows for modes of throttle response that smooth out twitchy throttle operation for less gas consumption.
Yarp, as it always has. I've enjoyed the pseudo "self-regulation" that the ebike community is engaged in, the majority of riders I know are aware of what they are riding and do everything they can to ride safe and responsibly, but it only takes ones 5000w "bike" asshat for the regulation hammer to come down.
@@chickenbradly And irresponsible riding. At least here in the US, a cop isn’t going to just stop you to check your power. It’s going to be for some sort of traffic violation.
This is the video the e-Bike/motorcycle community need to see. What a great video man! You really did your research. I cannot wait to see the next one 🤟
Yes e bicycles are more dangerous because the person on them have no armour or full face protection no body protection. The e bikes no mirrors and no abs and no indicators. I would arguebly feel much safer on a motorcycle. If you want to go down the rider safety issue, it should be mandatory by law for e bike riders to wear a full crash helmet at the very minimum.
I have a lot of dangerous situations. No matter how visible you make yourself, simply others will not see you. I wear a reflector vest most of the time and the lights are on. Most of the time I have been riding with a gopro camera and now there is a pretty big collection of situations like this.
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to leave a comment bro! You're absolutely right: there's no guarantee STILL that you will be visible to an inattentive driver. We still have to assume they don't see us and take necessary precautions to get out of their way. I'd love to learn from your close-encounters!
I had that too when I started riding MC. It is a good idea to try and anticipate what other road users are going to do and adjust before the situation gets dangerous. It worked fine for me. It sometimes means to yield when you have right of way but it is a much more relaxed way. If you have the opportunity try to find and mark the blind spots of a stationary car. Knowing about the blind spots and avoiding lingering there may improve safety. Hint: some blind spots are big enough to hide a car. BTW: Fortnine has a video about invisibility. It is made for MC riders but mostly applies to ebikers too.
I think both of you and FortNine are right. FortNine makes a statement on the population that on average, e-bike is as dangerous or more than motorcycles. You are making a point from the individual side that if you have appropriate gear and are rational, you will be safe on an e-bike. It is still important to show how e-bike can be dangerous because in many locations where there are rental e-bikes (such as San Francisco), most people ride Lyft bikes, usually without helmet with no body protection, and at very high speeds (~30+ km/h). Most people are not knowledgeable about bikes and can easily injure themselves.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and to leave a thoughtful comment! I will absolutely be highlighting the potential dangers of improperly handling e bikes. So far, I've covered the dangers of not wearing a helmet and not wearing gloves, providing a medical perspective. As you said, e-bikers need to raise their awareness of potential dangers as well as how to mitigate them through protective gear and defensive riding/situational awareness. I will be sure to cover as many areas and scenarios as possible, while trying to be mindful of viewer time and attention. Thanks again for your support, Khoi!
Okay I wrote two really long drafts. I'm going to try to be brief and make some brief truthful statements, which are common sense. 1. The faster you are and the more power you have the more dangerous you are to yourself and others. That is a car is more dangerous to others than to the driver and a semi truck even more so. A motorcycle is more dangerous than a legal ebike because it has more power and weight. That is danger to others. 2. The safe way to be with less risks is to travel at the speed of the flow of traffic when with that traffic. This means with pedestrians you should be travelling at acceptable speeds and not overtake them or surprise them. With roads the same is true. The ebike is safer on a trail than a motorcycle of course, that is why they are banned, but stealth ebike motorcycles happen as well. So to be at a slower pace involves slowing down the faster traffic and creating danger for them and you. Let me be a bit more specific. When you are near walking pedestrians you must avoid and be careful of blind corners, when you are near them you should be travelling no faster than they are or stop and let them get to a location where you can be quite a distance away. You should err on the side of stopping and waiting rather than plowing past at a fast pace. When you are on the street you should stay away from faster traffic. Think about where that car will go or turn based on other traffic and what they see not you. Pretend you are the invisible man and you can make it by them even if they don't see you. If you keep enough distance between you and cars, they can't hit you because they are far away from you. It's better to wait for an opening and distance and assume they don't see you until you know they do and even to just wait and go behind them and let them make the intersection first. I'd rather wait than crash. 3. With less regulation there is more freedom. More freedom means more choices. More choices means more mistakes and accidents of bad judgment. With freedom comes risks. We can't regulate all risks away and make the world totally safe. That would make the world a prison of rubber rooms and we still wouldn't avoid all risks. 4. People who are poor have less money so they can afford less protection in their vehicle and may even dangerously overcrowd a vehicle and make it less safe for them or others. A small van in a third would country overloaded and tipping over on a unsafe street is a danger, why? They are trying to save money and be more green with less energy. The more you save in money and more green you are, the lower the weight of your vehicle, so it's less safe from crashes because safety requires weight. So the more green you are the more risks you take in crash safety. Green is poverty of energy and real wealth is tied to embedded energy wealth in assets and energy usage, not economics which can offer false bubbles. 5. We can offer risk assessment on a sliding scale. With new technology without a safe space and with more flexibility of travel there is more risk. Ebikes do have that problem. They can be unregulated more which means more abuse and risk. I could buy a $7,000 ebike for example which is like motorcycle, a trail bike and a pedestrian pedal bike. I could ride it at 10 miles an hour on a highway and risk my life because cars are going 45 miles an hour and are 25 miles an hour faster. Or I could ride it at 60 miles an hour off trail speeds on a sidewalk and kill pedestrians. That is what makes ebikes so scary is they are stealth in sound and have so much flexibility. So people desire more and more regulation. And the new technologies often have freedom of choice and there are plenty of bad actors who become beacons for the regulators to regulate all the fun free will stuff as illegal activity and then you can kill a new industry and freedom of choice and new invention. As they become more safe items for hobby for some become more boring. There is a certain group of people who take more risks when doing anything, snowmobiling, motorcycle riding, boating, or driving a car. If they are taking great risks on the road or paths of others obviously they cause great harm to themselves or others. We should all bear the responsibility of our choices. 6. It doesn't matter if you have the right of way or not. If a bigger thing hits you you're still dead. Some people have an attitude that they will be an OFFENSIVE driver instead of a defensive driver. Have you ever been with one of them. They may crowd a smaller car with their big truck because that driver made a mistake and cut them off. They use their vehicle as a statement of pride and frustration in that weak moment. Being an offensive driver especially on a smaller vehicle may prove a point of pride for you, but you will be equally crushed by a semi making a mistake and turning into you. So don't be an offensive driver proving a silly point. You will get hurt or hurt others with that attitude. Some vehicles for example snowmobiles have less protection so they are more at risk, but they are legally more liable for example in Michigan if a car strikes a snowmobile, legally it's always the fault of the snowmobile driver not the car driver. So that is how some things work, but it doesn't matter who is at fault if you are hitting someone, the rights don't matter much if you're dead. So it's not a matter of pride or who has the rights or right of way. It's a matter of risk and safety and averting risks with proper laws, but it's impossible to regulate and get rid of all risks. No matter how safe you try to make any activity, there will always be risk and more power brings greater risks. Ebikes are in a weird niche, they are both less safe and more risky because they offer less power and more power. They are a niche market then and less dangerous than a more heavy and high powered vehicle, but more dangerous than a lower powered and lighter vehicle. My advice to most. Know the limits of you're ebike and ride and also realize others can hurt you or you can be hurt. So it's best to ride slow in slow areas and stay far away from pedestrians and cars and motorcycles. When you are riding an ebike you are better off with a pilot attitude and be aware you are safe, you're equipment is safe and checked out, and you are not to tired, or under the influence or even to much rushed and pressured. Because when we make rushed decisions we often make wrong ones and can add more risk of accidents to the ride. Avoid the cluttered path when possible and if traffic is heavy on the street avoid it. If it's heavy with pedestrians, become one at that speed and avoid them and stay away from them. The unique ability to transition from pedestrian to the street means an ebike rider has to think even more than any typical driver of other vehicles, because you can transition from ebike pedestrian to ebike road vehicle and with each change is different challenges. Unlocked ebikes over the legal speed limits bring an entirely new level of risk into the equation.
I think you're forgeting the type of people that might want an e-bike. Like in F9's video, the type of people that might find e-bikes appealing wouldn't ride a motorcycle, but is ok with bycicles. A more "casual rider" if you will, someone that might find it practical or someone who gets with the trend. And because it's "only" an e bike, people might only use a half helmet. And I think you're overestimating people in general. I mean, there's people who ride motorcycles and dont use helmets or any other protective gear. And imo, in the cycling world it's the same, no gear at all, or just a half helmet. You make some good points, and I really hope your channel grows so people get educated on the topic. Cheers! all the best
Thank you for watching and commenting brother! I appreciate your feedback and support. There is definitely a distinction to be made among people who prefer either ebikes or motorcycles. As you mention, that preference is likely to determine what safety precautions they take. Those are all valid points! Thanks again for your feed back and kind words! Cheers and all the best to you brother!
I think the big point about cars not noticing e-bikes is that cars don’t expect bikes to be going as fast as an e-bike where as with a motorcycle car drivers are aware of the speeds motorcycles can go. I was hit on my electric skateboard and the excuse of the driver was they didn’t know I could go that fast
The higher voltage wattage e bikes seem to be replacing the low cc motorcycle and motor scooter markets. If you compare these categories the safety differences are minimal.
Where I live (Sweden) 99% of the ebikes you see will be of the kind that you have to pedal to get electric assist, and they can't go faster than 25km/h on electric power. They are bicycles with electric assist, and that's how people see them as well. Problems arise in mixed traffic environments. Where you mix cars, bikes, ebikes and/or pedestrians. A car, or a motorcycle, have very specific roads where they are allowed to drive, with set speed limits. When we are in such an environment, we know what to expect. Now take a vehicle, that anyone without any prior training, can drive at 25km/h in all kinds of environments. Regular roads, bike lanes, combined bike/pedestrian lanes, inner city streets where motor traffic is prohibited but bicycles are allowed, sidewalks. People ride fast on regular bikes too, but it takes effort to keep up the pace. On an ebike you can go 25km/h until the battery runs empty. And that's what many people do. If they can go fast without effort, they will do just that with very little concern for pedestrians and slower bikes. Add to that the lack of respect for rules of traffic that you find in many bicyclists and you have plenty of accidents waiting to happen. I'm a car driver. I'm also a motorcycle rider. And a bicycle rider. And an ebike rider. And a pedestrian. Not in any specific order. I see the problems from many view points. Everybody is so quick to point at the others faults. I'm mostly concerned with my fellow human's safety, and the lack of safety awareness I see in so many people in the traffic environment. I lost count many years ago on the amount of close calls I've seen, where people who lack any kind of protection (mainly pedestrians and bicyclists) survived only because another person in a car/truck/bus, had such great reaction time they managed to stop or swerve to avoid hitting them. And the unprotected person in many cases just troddled along with their nose in their cell phone totally unaware how close they were to a ride to the hospital. Or the cemetary. And these incidents become harder to avoid when the very same person, who has no regard for rules and safety, all of a sudden can do the very same unpredictable moves at 25km/h instead of 5, or 15. And since people here treat ebikes as a regular bike, they might have a bike helmet on. Maybe. No other protection beyond that. And crashing into something at 25km/h hurts. A lot. I can only imagine what the statistics would look like if we had more of the kind of ebikes you have, where it is more like a moped with higher speeds and no pedal input required to go fast. Any motorized vehicle that is allowed to do more than 30km/h requires some kind of license here, so that is probably one reason that kind of ebikes isn't so common here. I'm guessing the vehicle itself also would require some kind of certification and registration if it is allowed to go faster than 30km/h, which also would keep the general public interest in them pretty low. The average Joe just wants something easy to ride without the hassle of license and registration. So what was all this rambling about, really? Just stay safe, and be aware of your suroundings when out there in the traffic no matter what type of vehicle you're on/in. Or even walking, which is better for your health anyway :)
Hey brother. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and leave a thoughtful response. I enjoyed your “rambling” and especially loved that you consider the perspectives of all modes of transportation and their risks. Thank you again brother. Stay safe and stay well. 🙏🏽❤️
Here in France I see idiots on electric scooters, those things you stand on, riding in amongst cars in rush hour. Even in the dark, wearing dark clothing, no lights, with a child passenger stood in front of them! Holy crap batman, is this evolution at work? Dumbasses get eliminated from the breeding pool and all that? But I bet they'll complain in a accident and blame the car driver, I doubt he had insurance. And he was taking responsibility for the child's life very lightly. Hmm.
The motor pedal assist restricted to 15.5 mph does not restrict the speed of the bike, most pedelec riders if fit ride at speeds well over 20 mph and up to 30 mph.
Over here in Europe and also the UK the standard ebike is the pedelec, although the power assist is only up to 15.5 mph they can of course be riden much faster, to around 25 mph or even 30 mph downhill. Because there is no throttle the rider must continue to pedal and protective clothing (and full face helmet) would be both restrictive and too hot to wear. In summer pedelec couriers can be seen riding in busy city traffic at 20 to 25 mph in just T shirts and cycle helmets (or slightly higher specification pedelec cycle helmets). Pedelec riders are certainly more vulnerable to injury because they are often travelling at speeds of moped riders but without suitable protection. For those who complain that ebikes don't keep up with traffic, in congested cities like London, it is cars that can't possibly keep up with ebikes, pedelecs are also more manoeverable than motorbikes in car traffic which is virtually stationary. A journey of between 2 and 8 miles in London takes half the time on an ebike during day time, the ebike can also sometimes take routes which are prohibited to cars and motorbikes.
I’m an avid motorcycle rider. If you slapped me on an e-bike and told Me to wear a full-face helmet, I’d feel a bit like that kid who has gloves pinned to his coat all year long. Seeing someone armored to the nines on a scooter or e-bike seems excessive, and yet… I know plenty of people who spent their vacation digging gravel out of their arms and face because they rented one thinking ‘oh it’s only a scooter’ or ‘oh, it’s only an e-bike’. That stated… I’m gonna blame the government. They don’t really keep the pace of technology and they don’t plan for it. In Japan, they have lanes for car traffic, motorcycle traffic, bicycle traffic and foot traffic. their citizens KNOW to look for vehicles of that class in those lanes. I wanted to fly my bike out there and never come home... Why the hell I haven’t seen that anywhere else is a mystery to me. I rode a bicycle in Portland, Oregon. I didn’t like the fact that it was considered THE most bicycle friendly city in the US and I still ended up riding with traffic a lot because the bike lane ended… so I’m back on the motorcycle. I feel safer on it. Also, considering you’re factoring battery weight-versus-mass and rolling inertia, it seems throwing higher requirement systems and heavier parts aren’t going to do your range any favors. That said, I’m not trying to knock The e-bike experience. I just think having the power to flow with traffic, stop with multiple piston calipers, ride with a full face helmet and be able to go distance are larger selling points. This may change as e-bikes evolve… but I wouldn’t buy one right now. None of the exercise, all of the risk, fun… but not laughing maniacally fun (umm. I will not be listing my top speed). 😅
Very good response dude. This is how response videos should be made and you made me look at E bikes diferently. Its not the bike thats wrong...its the rider.
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and for leaving such a thoughtful response. Thank you for keeping an open mind and for being an independent thinker. Well said - it's the rider!
My main issue is with people who have the opinion that an ebike is just a way to get around fast while also getting around the law. People with a driving license suspension for things like reckless driving or driving impaired may get one as a way to get around a suspension. They already do this with mobility scooters and lawn tractors. There are also people that will get one instead of a motorcycle because of cost, time, or regulation and will treat an ebike like a motorcycle but be a moron about it. Those people aren't the majority but negativity sells so the attitude towards ebikers will be negative. I definately agree with Ryan's points due to what I've seen but your points are just as good. Ebikes are a fairly new technology that has to be better studied before meaningful rules and standards can be put in place to keep everybody safe.
If you are comparing an E-Bike to a motorcycle, then you mean to use the E-Bike as a means of transportation on public streets, not as a bicycle to be ridden on bike paths (not lanes) and sidewalks. So, when you start comparing the two, you have to stay with that kind of comparison, as a means of transportation on public streets. And this is where the issues arise that Fortnine expressed. If you ride on public streets, you either ride with the traffic in the car lanes or off to the side in bike lanes if they exist or just on the side of the road if they do not. I think anyone who has ridden both would agree that riding with the traffic in the car lanes is safer and easier than where bicycles ride. But, to ride in the car lanes you have to keep up with the traffic, or you are back to being less safe again, regardless of your own riding ability. By blocking the traffic you are creating a very hazardous situation. And this is a serious challenge for E-Bikes. It is a serious challenge for small motorcycles as well. Even on secondary streets, cars today are doing 50 to 60 mph. Even if your E-Bike can do 60 mph (which is rare), that is its top speed, and it takes longer to get up to that speed than it does a car, most of which can do 120 mph. An E-Bike that can do 60 mph tops is really only good for 40 to 50 mph traffic. And that would be a very fast E-Bike. And why are motorcycles so much heavier than E-Bikes? Duh? In any event, Fortnine's comparison starts with the assumption that you intend to use the E-Bike in place of a motorcycle as a means of transportation. This implies that you will ride with traffic in the car lanes (cause riding in the bike lanes sucks) and thus will have to be going quite fast and thus will need gear (unless you plan on quitting after your first fall) and so on. Obviously, E-Bikes fall short in this type of comparison, and are not actually even street legal, though they are bicycle legal. To me, the choice was simply do I want to ride across town in the bike lane or in the car lane? I wanted to ride in the car lane (and even on the highway) and for that you need a motorcycle (or a car, which is still my main vehicle). In some cities/places, an E-Bike might have an easier go at it. Probably in situations that are slower and more friendly to bicycles. Where I am, trying to ride an E-Bike (or a bicycle) on the sides of our streets looks like those videos you showed of motorcyclists doing stupid things. I would MUCH rather ride with traffic, but then you have the keeping up issue.
I have ridden motorcycles and e-bikes. I wear safety gear on both. As you mentioned, the most important variable is the rider. More specifically, the AWARENESS of the rider. Pay attention, keep your head on a swivel and anticipate the actions of others. I assume that 80% of drivers don’t see me and the other 20% are actively trying to hit me. Perhaps overly cautious assumptions, but they have served me well.
motorcycles vs e-bikes. It's not just about the fuel source, it's also about the manufacturing and the waste after disposing of the vehicle. I don't think we'll have totals on the amount of damage each put on this earth until we have enough data to determine the amount of carbon that both produce in its entire life from the manufacturing to the disposal.
I noticed you pretty much ignored Ryan's point on training and education. The issue really is that ebikers often don't ride safely simply because they don't know any better.
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. I did cover that topic in the video, but I hear your emphasis on training and education. That’s a large part of why this channel exists. As always, I have a ton to learn myself and I’ll keep sharing what I learn as I go. Thanks again!
Jamie, I agree. The vast majority of people will buy an ebike and never receive any formal training. I think ebike riders should be required to take a safety course similar to the motorcycle safety courses. Having ridden with large groups of bikes/ebikes I can tell you they are sometimes very unaware of their surroundings and not particularly skilled on a regular bike let alone an electric one
@@BullittKid08 as somebody who has taken the required motorcycle safety courses to be road legal, I really don't think they are offering very much practical training. in the US, MSF BRC is the most common training course to be road legal and they basically just teach you how to use the brakes, low speed turning, signaling, and just the most basic surface level stuff about traffic safety. Most riders leave the course with nothing more than a legal endorsement
Thank you for taking the time to watch bro! Stay safe. And keep being a great example of someone who truly cares about others. That’s a rare and much needed example. 🙏🏽
If you're riding at high speed, wearing protect gear is important when riding an ebike. Get a motorcycle if you enjoy riding over 30mph. Ebikes is a new culture for bike transportation. Treat your ebike with the same safety features as a regular bike.
Thank you for watching and for your reply, Abraham! You're absolutely right that regardless of all the gear you wear, if you ride irresponsibly, there are certain situations where it won't really matter (if, for example, you're hit by a car). I haven't seen anyone using hand signals and I've asked people if they even use their indicators, and they said they don't. So there's A LOT of work to be done. But I have confidence that people will begin to ride more consciously and responsibly with some education and encouragement. This must become a group initiative and effort.
Although it is an Interesting point to say the variable is the rider, the stats on motorcycles and bikes take that into account, in terms of the laws of large numbers. No one hops on either thinking they're going to be a statistic and saying ebikers chose to ride like a bicycle is dismissive to the facts that people don't need lights, mirrors; helmets; or gear while on the road. Half of all biker accidents happen for speed and gear, not from automobiles. Emphasizing that you wear full motorcycle gear is the right way to lead by example. Cheers!
I just stumbled onto your video and I’m glad that I did. I’m glad to hear that you actually wear gear, the E-Bikes that are a bit more of an issue are for example Emmo Zone or Daymek EM3. I know that Fortnine did not elude to these particular models because is seems like the e-bikes they are referring to are basically electric assisted bicycles. While on my Harley I was I had an e-bike smash my signal off (Emmo zone style). Obviously I wasn’t happy because he didn’t stop at a red light and rounded a corner right into me. Problem was he had no insurance (obviously) so I am out 89.99 plus time wasted to replace. All because “that guy” doesn’t have to follow lights or anything thing because he is on a “bicycle”. This is my issue with e-bikes that weigh almost 300 pounds and require nothing. They should have a non expiring trailer style plate and $10 a year insurance for liability. Keep doing what your doing man
Lol saw these 2 videos just now so I'm late but I think some people missed the point with this video. The way FortNine framed e-bikes in a way that switched back and forth between them being slow and then being really fast without distinguishing them. If they are like a pedal bike and going similar speeds then it's the lack of bike infrastructure. If you are riding them like a motorcycle then they should be treated like one by the user and follow the requirements as such. And if an individual is riding them completely against the rules well this is an issue with proper enforcement not e-bikes themselves and can indicate bad/confusing road laws. Safety equipment mentioned is probably a good idea for anyone riding in the road but it also shouldn't all need to be required if our roads were at all safe. If infrastructure and driver training was not so horrible it would be a safer environment for both motorcycle and bicycle users... instead of fighting each other we should be working together to make safer streets for all users.
I'm a little late to this one but this was a great "discussion" video. Didn't quite know what to expect going in but it was good hearing things from the other point of view. I feel like you made some good points as well as Ryan. I'm a motorcycle rider only. I do not ride e-bikes but I can sympathize with a lot of Ryan's points. As for my opinion on who should leave who alone, we all need to share the road like it or not. I personally think pointing out that motorcyclists are polluting the environment and e-bikes are better is a waste of time. (not putting words in your mouth here. It's just arguments I've heard) There are way bigger threats to our environment than motorcycles will ever be so maybe just let sleeping dogs lie on that front. At the end of the day every community has examples that make them look bad. Police our selves and learn to share the road safely and with respect. Both motorcyclists and bicyclists are at the bottom of the food chain on the road and we need to keep or own safety in mind. Ride safe to whoever reads this, whatever it is you ride.
Hey you are just comparing what you do. Not what others most do. You are a very informed person and you take protection but please make a video that compares in the real world not just you.
Point taken but isn't motorcycling and ebiking safety all really relevant to speed? Motorcyclist always ride in traffic at high speeds so you should be wearing full safety gear at all times. If you have an ebike that only goes as fast as a pedal bike you may only need a bike helmet. I'd like to see a chart of sorts with recommended safety equipment at rated speeds. My commuter ebikes top speed is about 30mph, and I try to avoid riding in traffic at all costs, but I still ride with a full face MTB helmet, and a light weight CE rated motorcycle style jacket just in case. As they say "dress for the slide and not for the ride".
Neither is all that safe when riding among vehicles that weigh in the tons. That's the part I think both videos missed. Be smart about where you ride, when you ride. Always remember the right of way legally will likely mean very little in terms of what you were riding, your pain and suffering, and your funeral/medical expenses.
The only thing you said that I agree with are the things that an e-bike rider should do, such as wear protective equipment, etc. However you are completely overlooking or ignoring the reality of e powered, wheeled devices (which include not only bikes, but also scooters, skateboards and last but not least the latest single wheeled options) and that is for the most part the people riding them are not and have no plans to follow such advice. They ride fast, the wrong way on one way paths or on sidewalks disobeying basic traffic rules that motorists, pedestrians and cyclists are all required to obey and they ride without protective gear. But I have to say what I think is the most dangerous part of this and it is that "e" vehicles very often travel at far greater speeds than a human powered vehicle can. They cover much more ground that a regular bike in a given amount of time. This results in situations where they "close in" much more quickly than a motorist is prepared for. I see it every day and as a life long motorcyclist, it scares the $h1t out of me. The latest example was a guy riding on a sidewalk along a 4-lane one-way street and going against the traffic direction. I was waiting for a break in the traffic to turn left onto the one-way so I was mostly looking right. It had registered with me that there was a bicycle on the sidewalk over a block away but I didn't expect him to close in so fast. I waited for a break to turn out and just as I almost did I took another look to my left. This guy (in shorts, flip flops and a tank top) that I had noticed was on an e bike and he shot past in front of me on the sidewalk at probably 20-25 mph. One second he was a block and a half away and the next I almost hit him! If that had happened I would probably have been held responsible. Obviously you are in the e-bike business and it's unfortunate that you don't understand or want to understand the reality of what you are preaching. Good luck with that venture.
I think one thing that's not discussed is how u are perceived on the roads... you look like a bike sound like a bike ride like a bike but it going as fast as a scooter. Other drivers expectations on your speed maybe slow n so they think they can go around u or beat u easily not realizing you both are traveling at 35 mph and u are not just a bike you can imagine how this miscommunication might not work in the favor of the bike.
I think it comes down to a confluence of awareness. Having situational awareness and broadcasting your presence is paramount to safety in a kinetic environment, everyone should be doing it, but this is seldom the case on a large scale. People on their cell phones are one of the greatest modern threats whether they be riding on 4 wheels, 2 wheels or 2 feet when intersecting with traffic. There are plenty if irresponsible motorcyclists _and_ ebikers out and about. FortNine's tribalism is only divisive and it's not going to stop granny from going to the park on her ebike. The electric future is here, so him and others of that mindset will just have to deal with it and act accordingly or go find another hobby if they don't like. I hear there is an opening at Thursday's Bridge Club card game now that granny got her ebike. He could try that. Just sayin'
😂🤣😂🤣😂 I enjoyed this comment a lot bro. Well said regarding situational awareness and people being on their damn cell phones. Totally agree with you. It does really come down to the operator. Granny on her ebike had me dying 😂🤣😂🤣
No, what's going to happen after enough crashes and accidents because of E-Riders Society will force these people to license and insure their vehicle just like the rest of us. In the meantime us meat eaters that ride internal-combustion motorcycles are not going anywhere, so while you're recycling your sandals we're reloading.

@@rofflestomp684 well good for you, but that doesn't change anything. We're still here and we're still not going anywhere and while you're on the subject of staying in your lane that's the problem the E Riders are not staying in their Lanes.

excellent points made in the video! as long as you are being safe it doesn't matter if you're on a motorcycle or ebike because it all depends on the operator!
Thank you for watching and commenting bro! I really enjoy FortNine’s content, and I’ve learned a lot from his videos. I appreciate your ability to think rationally and critically.

Gotta remember he's making a RUclips video. Taking a side gives a better title and inflames more comments; soo much so you made a video response. I'm sure if you sat down with him and talked in a different setting he'd be more balanced.
Thank you for watching and leaving a message, brother. I appreciate the points you've raised, and I will take them into consideration. Totally valid!
so you will be making a new video about how you were wrong and missed the point?@@healthye-rider8651
Thank you, bro. I appreciate you taking the time to consider and weigh the information for yourself. Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment!
You are completely right. It more so depends on the rider than the bike itself.
Absolutely! 💯
Thank you brother. I’m always touched by your kind words and sincerity. 🙏🏽
Bro thanks for this video!! 🤘🏾⚡️🤘🏾❤️
Thanks for taking a moment of your time to watch to! I appreciate it. 🙏🏽
Hmm.
@@mickleblade Thank you for watching and commenting brother. That’s very upsetting to hear. I hope at least you’re staying safe.
We must be thinking of different e bikes! I'm faster on my steel push bike than on a bike limited to 15mph with pedal assist
Another great video brother!! 🙌 Thanks for these informative videos!! 🍻
Thank you for taking the time to stop by and leave such kind words!
I’m an avid motorcycle rider. If you slapped me on an e-bike and told
Me to wear a full-face helmet, I’d feel a bit like that kid who has gloves pinned to his coat all year long.
That said, I’m not trying to knock
The e-bike experience.
Great information, loving the videos!
Thanks for your continued support bro! 🙏🏽 I’m so happy you’re enjoying them so far.
Thank you for watching and for leaving a thoughtful comment. Great points I’ll have to take some time to consider more. Thank you!
@@BullittKid08 It is deranged to compare Ebikes to mopeds, led alone Mopeds.
What’s the model of this helmet ?
Agree completely. All depends on how you ride.
I. Am a bad example 😔
Great video Doc!!
🦊⚡🐾
Thank you for taking the time to watch bro! Stay safe. And keep being a great example of someone who truly cares about others. That’s a rare and much needed example. 🙏🏽
If you're riding at high speed, wearing protect gear is important when riding an ebike. Get a motorcycle if you enjoy riding over 30mph. Ebikes is a new culture for bike transportation. Treat your ebike with the same safety features as a regular bike.
Even with good gear so many people endanger their life, it all depends, so many people in world not even using any indicators.
My advice is: Just take the MSF course, get the license, and be done with it.
Fortnines perspective was perfect
Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment. I appreciate your suggestion, and I’ll keep it in mind! 🙏🏽❤️
YES if you have never ridden a motorcycle before
Point taken but isn't motorcycling and ebiking safety all really relevant to speed?

@@michaellee3687 The thing you miss is that electrics are here now. More everyday and you can't just muzzle that fact. You can also pretend that you alone pay the taxes for the trails, but that just is not the reality of this world.
Sorry, welcome to the future. You bought the ticket, so take the ride. Enjoy.
excellent points made in the video! as long as you are being safe it doesn't matter if you're on a motorcycle or ebike because it all depends on the operator!
