Why Electric? Zero FX Electric Motorcycle Review

- Опубликовано: 4 окт 2018
- We’d given electric motorcycles the silent treatment till now and thought we’d continue the theme here. The Zero FX is modern, all-electric, and heaps of fun but is it worth the money? Or the compromise? We find out in this elaborate ploy to hide the fact that SOMEONE misplaced Ryan’s microphone.

this man just made a motorcycle review without saying a word, bravo!
How the hell did you get me to watch a 10 minute silent film?!? Great work!
honestly thought you were making a joke about the zero being quiet. suddenly i understood
I don't even ride motorcycles but have watched every one of Ryan's videos in my feed..
@@Nictwist well that and I suppose "not making any noise"-- silent --- in terms of an electric motorcycle that no one has versus Teslas

The most artistic motorcycle review ever conceived and produced by human beings

Gotta disagree. The video you linked to is an advertisement and doesn’t come within 100 light years of any F9 video.

Tbh the first half of the video I totally missed the mesage but then I got the hang of it and started to speak your language.
I thought he didn't "say" anything 🤷
He did a great job ahy.
As much as I love this video (which is a lot) I really wanted to hear Ryan's thoughts in detail about this one. I got the jist and understood the basic points he was making, but I really wanted some nuance. How does he actually feel about it? How does it feel to ride? How is it for beginners and new riders? I noticed he did some offroad demos, how does it actually fare offroad and is it a decent option for short ADV/Dual Sport trips and adventures.
It's a really great video, but I really wish it wasn't silent. I love Ryan's witty comments and Clarksonisms.
If you read the description, they lost the microphone and we're left with this, beggars can't be choosers
@@sisamusudroka3000 what a coincidence that they had technical difficulty of the audio nature while reviewing a quiet product! Hmm? You're Skeptical? How can that be?
@@Notsram77 but it's not just a "quiet product", it's a bike. Bike review not quiet review. We expected Ryan's voice but didn't get it. The missing mic explanation is good enough.
I agree. I rarely reply to things but this wasn’t a very good video. Should have been part whatever he was thinking and the silence and then some actual commentary. Didn’t do the bike any good service. Don’t want to buy after watching that. There are other EVs out there and coming out.
@@sisamusudroka3000 It was very clearly a joke. They definitely have more than one microphone, and even if they didn't, they would just buy a new one if they lost it.
I still love that the loudest part of this bike.... is Ryan walking up to it.
I thought it was the smoking rear tire. 😉

Electric Motorcycle = ASMR
IMO, the killer app for electric motorcycles is what Gogoro of Taiwan has done - their batteries are easily removable and they have gas stations all over the island that have fully charged batteries. Range anxiety is totally eliminated since riders can pull up to any station, swap their batteries and be on their way. Even faster than a gas fillup.
Is it not ironic that a "futuristic" electric motorcycle doesn't have standard LED headlights 🤣🤣🤣🤣
crylicstar thats what throws off rubber neckers in their v6 camrys and dodge rams .. ha
You'd be surprised how many states/countries regulations don't really allow for them...
Yeah, WTF!
I fitted a LED myself on my zero ds . It was as hard as changing a bulb. But they surely should have LED from factory
Omg. Seriously.
I'm impressed that you were able to convey the message without any audible language...
Imagine what you could do in politics with that power. FortNine for Mayor of Vancouver!
RyanF9 for PRIME MINISTER
Put FortNine in office so we can stop getting bent over by ICBC on motorcycle insurance.
The language issue is in Montreal.....hey wait. He left there, didn't he?
If cops have a tendency to pull over loud vehicles then....will this bike be never pulled over?😱
I think that's the case. I built an electric motorcycle recently and by the time we had to get it on the road for testing and filming, a new rule came on the restrictions of modified motorcycles which even lead to the Motor Vehicle Department breaking into College automotive fests and seizing bikes. It was the time of the elections too. We wanted to wait for things to clear up because if they are in a mood to get us, months of our work and money will be in jeopardy. But since we were getting close to the deadline, we did not have a choice. But even after riding more than 80 km on various days, the authorities never noticed it even with its sparkling blue and white paint job. So yeah, I think that sound is a significant factor for them to get you pulled over.
I have a Zero SR. I love the look on cops faces when I pull up next to them and they had no clue I was there.
I must say this is the most unique bike review I've seen.
Excellent ORIGINAL very ORIGINAL content as always. Thank you!

Lol... awesome !!!
One of the best reviews ever!
Just bought a FX 7.2 here in Sweden and cant wait for the snow to go away.
Your comment is a year old now, which prompts me to ask: how's the bike been so far?
@@CockatooDude
Sorry for late reply...
The bike is great! Done 9000km so far and the only thing that I have done to the bike is charge and tension the belt two times. Normaly get 80-90km of range on one charge. If I ride to work (urban) I get 110-130km. Huligan riding 65-75km.
No loss of battery capacity
@@feggerd Wow that's really nice that it's been so dependable thus far. Good stuff man.
I legit love that you captured one of the most amazing things about electric motorcycles: Silence. I love hearing my engine roar on every turn in my sports bike, but the silent experience when riding electric is just unmatched.
That intro where he did a burnout actually made me say "holy shit" out loud
Holy smokes*
I like the video, nice idea to make it look old fashion like that. However the burnout is cool but the high pitched sound of the bike reminds me my old drill :D

Not a single word spoken but yet explained in an excellent way!!!
The hell just happened? I watched this until the end, Congratulations!
Great video, amazing ability to keep people watching without any dialogue!
Please add a follow-on with your read of this bikes abilities off-road. With your dirt bike background and access to trails, I was definitely hoping for more pithy commentary and what works and what doesn't. Having a silent review is cinematic genius, it also isn't as informative as it could be to help people like me considering a purchase of the FX.
Keep up the great work, and add an update on the FX offroad!
Yes, I do love my Zero DSR.
Yes, it does have limitations...
that's why I have more than one motorbike. I have more than one tool in my toolbox too! Great vid!
Its funny. You end up riding the Zero most of the time because it so damn much fun. And when you hop on the gas bike it feels like a locomotive, loud, dirty, and slow.
@@thorstambaugh1520 Even funnier when you think about it is the fact that they are, generally speaking, diesel powered rolling generators. A big ass diesel engine, b.f. alternator, and 6 electric traction motors. lmfao.
@@storejoshuprite not all od them, but yes. Just because mechanical transmissions for them have to be huge and pretty expensive.
More than one tool in your toolbox, eh? Is that euphemistic speak?
@@thorstambaugh1520 if your bike is dirty its your problem because u don't clean it. If its lound install a silent exhaust, if its slow then its an old piece of crap. Gas is much more fun. Sound, smoke, gear shifting, revving and no need to wait for it to charge
As a Zero FX owner, you covered both pros and cons very well. Other Zero reviews I've seen contain a few incorrect statements and you seem to always do your homework best. Maybe could have put more emphasis on the bike always being charged in the morning, but I was really glad to see you reviewing a Zero. Maybe a video in the future on SR with Power Tank?
Thanks! Means a lot coming from an owner. I would love to have a go on the SR... personally I'd take the Charge Tank though. We have a ton of Level 2 chargers around here so I could see that being seriously practical. ~RF9
I’ve demoed an SR, and it was a blast. If I’m not mistaken, the 2018 DSR is VERY close to the SR in terms of range and power, but with a bit more suspension.
LOVED the video, BTW!
Trevor, what are your thoughts on the relative silence of an electric bike? They're really interesting, and the price is fairly high, but not excessively crazy, I think. Just a little concerned about the lack of "awareness creation" lacking most of the noise that a regular bike produces, even the quiet ones.
I'd probably get a small air horn as the first upgrade. :)
@@toki002 good point, but even if it only helps in limited cases, it can still help you getting noticed. Proper situational awareness is key on a bike, of course.
bike accelerates more often. so it creates more noise. see what you saying. but loud people do notice loud pipes.
This is beautiful! I've never seen such an awesome and unique review. Well done.
What an inspiration man, first 30 seconds i was like when will this montage end and then i soon realised this is not your regular bike review. Literally no words to describe this ❤️
A bike review without saying any word... this is unhearded off. Great job F9 crew!

Dude this is just, beyond National Geographic level.
How are you not on TV yet? Oh right, because TV is obsolete now. xD
Wow the most unique review i have ever seen! Great job! And right in my back yard!
I have a 2017 Zero DSR, and have enjoyed it for a little over a year. Essentially a model up from what was reviewed. (Just means longer range and a little more power/top speed). This review is pretty accurate. I use the bike for my work commute, and love it. Never any hassle, always a 'full tank' in the morning. And the quiet ride is really nice. I can go to In-n-Out at midnight and not wake the neighbors :D
Some owners have gone for the charger upgrades that allow you to charge rather quickly using car charging stations. (less than 2 hours, some even 45 minutes or so, depending on if you plug into more than one car station!) which allows them to go for longer rides/road trips. Its POSSIBLE, but no where near the convenience of a gas bike. Having said that, this is definitely something you can see being 'the future' as soon as charging infrastructure gets built everywhere.
Having said that, plugging it into a normal wall socket really does make it a super convenient and cheap commuter bike to operate. The up front cost is a bitch though.
I get this bike if all your doing are short commutes, it's nothing new they have had electric automobiles for over 120 years. They were marketed to women as a alternative to steam vehicles. My biggest complaint is the battery, it may last 5 years or it may not and they take too long to charge for the way I ride. Plus at this point in time it would be greener to keep your gas bike then buy one of these as the damage caused from not only making the batteries but disposing of them. When they come up with a different source of viable energy to run the electric I may think about it.
@Dave Stern Battery has to be replace-able in the future if we stay in lithium-ion for a while.
@@gctdonyre hopefully graphene in batteries gets adopted. It should help with longevity, capacity, and over all performance of li-ion batteries. Video of Samsung work into possible graphene batteries: ruclips.net/video/Go2g_BNpG_Y/видео.html
Henry Wes Your gas bike is no way greener than this. Remember, they also need batteries and engine oil.
How is you look pulling out a cord at night and plugging it in, then unplugging and wrapping it up in the morning an easier "full tank in the morning" than me sticking the nozzle in my tank for literally 18 seconds?
I appreciate that you like the bike, and it's cool. But I don't think it's a huge convenience thing over a fueled bike.

Its a whole company not just him
Bruno Mikan Yeah, they have a team behind videos but usually that usually means repeatably soulless or even straight shitty content. (E.G. Buzzfeed.) Not to mention this is a motorcycle gear retailer's YT channel. I wouldn't say RevZilla makes low-quality content. Although a lot of them seem more like advertisements rather than a legitimately in-depth and informative review. But that comes from a company beholden to its suppliers. F9 has personality, style, substance, and fucking QUALITY for every video. And they care more about making an honest review than pushing a supplier's crap.

As always, an imaginative, informative, and extremely well produced video. Really great job. As to your observations and conclusions, I'd say that you were strong on left-brain facts but a bit light on the right-brain delights that riding a Zero FX provides. To me, it feels otherworldly to whack the throttle (rheostat) at 20 MPH and then fight to keep the front wheel down for 200 yards -- all silent. That silent-green sea of torque makes this bike special. The rest is just numbers.

Nice review! I'm an SR owner and I think you covered everything pretty well for the FX. Zeros have limitations and aren't for every application but for city riding and commuting they're fantastic.
The fast charging situation is a bit loony at the moment, as you illustrated well. I think the biggest thing Zero should do for 2019 is make the charge tank standard and at the very least include a J-plug for the FX/FXS models. 3K to upgrade to what is standard on every other EV is outrageous.

Sometimes it's scary
I get the practicality in urban settings, but I need a bike to commute 55 miles each way on motorway to get me to work. Electric tech still can't give me that without some serious range anxiety. But hey, big step in the right direction!
They have bikes that go way beyond 55 miles. Just gotta pay more haha
Luis Martinez you misunderstood, he needs the bike to go 110 miles per charge (he said 55 each way). And on a motorway, so has to do it fast. That looks like a fail to me, so far. Doubtless the tech will catch up one day, but it’s got a long way to go from here (pun somewhat intended). Les in UK
I believe the bike chargers faster than 8 hours. You only need enough range for a one way trip if you have a charger at the other end.
At least right now - No. No charging points anywhere near me. :/ They are slowly becoming more common in the UK, though.
@@Llyander Most workplaces have electricity. If you can plug in at work, the bike will be full before you head home. No more having to stop on the way home for fuel, no more having to warm the bike before you ride home. No more paying for petrol and maintenance.
