thats not a crash.....try going through a rear car window at 25mph ....and using a helmet i may add..... until ebike ( throttle ) start to realise they are using motorbikes and not bikes.... the have a motor ( allthough not piston driven ) and they are a bike ......

Newish rider here. After 330 miles on my first e-bike, I had my first crash today. Rear tire hit a small patch of wet concrete while slightly leaned. Scraped and bruised my left arm, and bruised left rib cage. Thank God I wore elbow pads. Now recuperating while watching crash videos. I appreciate learning from your detailed analysis, and from my own experience.

I had just bought a brand-new e-bike, my first one, and I was driving in a parking lane because the sidewalk was wet due to a few houses having sprinklers on. I was going to a gas station to buy some slushies for my friends, so I turned left, I didn't notice that since the parking lane was slanted downward slightly towards the drain, the slight dip that the turn had was covered in a puddle around an inch deep, my front wheel splashed onto the puddle, got the water in my eyes which I closed reactively and then I couldn't see for a split second where I panicked, over corrected, hit the curb, slammed the front brake and fell on my right side and my body fell on top of the handlebars, and they jabbed me in the stomach. Luckily, I was wearing a helmet, so my head was fine, but I didn't have gloves and was wearing normal clothes, so most of my right arm and hand was scraped and bleeding and my knee was basically an open wound. It's been about 5 days since that happened, and my stomach still feels incredibly sore. I ended bending the rim and getting a bad flat on my front tire and I scratched my brake lever. Luckily, I fell on the side opposite to my cassette so that was fine, and my pedal held up. Goes to show how bad crashes can happen if you stop paying attention for half a second. (I was going around 10 Mph)

But why did you leave the paved path in the first place? Your speed seemed well within the capability of the bike. Kinda looked like your reach exceeded your grasp. I did that myself about a month ago. New ebike - trying to beat my previous speed through a curve. I had competing impulse in my brain. One said 'brake hard now' and the other said 'force the turn radius tighter - you have plenty of traction.' Either would have worked, but not being 100% sure of the bike, I froze and did neither. Landed on my side, cheap ass helmet with the broken strap went flying - but only after it slapped the ground - I guess my right side took the impact on a curb - cracked at least one rib. Then a week later, that bike was stolen. so now I'm shopping for a new one.

If you can keep up with traffic, then use the road - not the shoulder. All of the unnecessary lane changes are not improving your safety. The lane width of a bike lane isn't appropriate for the speeds you are going, it means your movements are not what people expect, and you have a much higher rick of catastrophic tire failure due to the road hazards that are continuously swept from the roadway to the shoulder by passing traffic.

I'm shopping for e-bikes right now and I really want one of these more than anything Karma but the problem is is the heavy Hub mounted motor in the rear there's a reason real dirt bikes have a center-mounted motor. So for off-road purposes this thing is not that good

Was your top speed only around 51mph? I hope not ,that beast should at least get to 60-65mph. I have a 8000w Enduro that can hit 56mph maybe 60mph.

I still see people especially the younger folk wearing basically a less than half helmet. I assume to look cool. Till they take a serious spill they rather take their chances. Ahhh the stupidity of youth. Hopefully the smarter ones will rise to the top and take the advice here.

Man ,you are the only one that talks about the speed! Would be nice an all in depth of suggested speeds according to your bike, e scooter, etc…. Like wich helmet would be the ideal, or at least will put the odds on our favor , they are so uncomfortable, but necessary , gracias!

Not an ebike . that's a motorcycle . maybe learn to ride an actual bicycle and then graduate to a motorized bike .

You fell victim to the phenomenon where you’ve been traveling at relatively high speeds for awhile and Are going much faster than you realize when you enter a slow speed zone because your perception is used to the high speeds

I got an e-bike month ago and I was making very slow maybe 5 mph u-turn but made too sharp and wheel slipped fell to ground luckily I had gloves on or else my hands palms would’ve been scraped up pretty bad. Only my knee got scraped up bad from that fall

Not an e-bike, but I had a painful crash as a child, losing speed control on a hill in the rain. I was heading for a road, a very quiet road with good visibility, but I panicked and pulled harder on the brakes and slid across the road on my right leg. Completely shredded my jeans and had several light lacerations, it was a painful early lesson in maintaining adequate speed control from the start in the rain and to avoid large inputs when it is wet, I never recognized that I was aquaplaning, it is like hitting mud or ice, nothing you can do but hold steady until you regain grip!

Great advice! I am forever puzzled by how little protection ebike riders wear. I have seen motorcycle riders go down at very low speeds, sometimes what looks like for nothing. Imagine ebike riders going down at higher speeds. A lot of idiots out there...

You seem to be advocating black helmets. Doesn't that contradict your message? The Hurt report concludes that bright colored helmets and torso clothing significantly improves conspicuity, which is sorely needed to be seen by car drivers who, after an accident almost always say "I never saw the motorcycle."

I don't care for helmets, that being said I bought myself a closed helmet to shut whiny people up and keep myself from crying at high speeds and I gotta say it's so cozy and warm...

You had good gear but CE soft level saved me full gauntlet gloves. Dress for the impact and slide not the style

I been wearing a normal bike helmet to ride 750 watt 28 mile per hour fat bike e-bike, but i just bought a full face Bell matt black helmet that i will be wearing from now on, why take a chance?

Ebikes let unskilled riders go too fast. If you are not working for the speed, then you do not respect the speed. Lack of skill led to this fall. No wonder you need all that body armor.

I think one thing that's not discussed is how u are perceived on the roads... you look like a bike sound like a bike ride like a bike but it going as fast as a scooter. Other drivers expectations on your speed maybe slow n so they think they can go around u or beat u easily not realizing you both are traveling at 35 mph and u are not just a bike you can imagine how this miscommunication might not work in the favor of the bike.

you e bike dorks can't even handle a real bike properly, but you're trying to ride a 50 pound monstrosity at irresponsible speeds. just an accident waiting to happen.

Its safer not to wear a helmet, it makes you take less risks.
