It's never been a surprise to me that trumpet players often steal from the oboe repertoire from the baroque era; there's nothing written for the middle range of the trumpet from that time for the simple reason that trumpets could only play chromatic melodies in the extremely high (technically difficult) range during the baroque era) and an oboe can certainly " punch" like a trumpet as well as being beautifully lyrical.

Maurice Andre as well as a few others use that finger as well.
I find it easier, you don't have to change your entire RH technique when shifting between Bb trumpet and piccolo
