Once you discover Porcupine Tree, it's like going down the rabbit hole.
Im already feeling lost hahaha
It’s like discovering music all over again.
I still prefer Wilson's solo efforts over PT. That's saying something though.
@@AndyGrouch I will say Raven is probably in my top albums of all time, but I prefer the prog metal shades of this era of PT. Sky Moves Sideways is a freaking masterpiece of transportation space rock. PT or SW truly has something for everyone I truly believe.
That hole is DEEP! Especially when you start branching off into Blackfield and No-Man. Quite a bit of good stuff on those leaves too!
Gavin Harrison is seriously one of the best drummers ever
Marryon Lillibridge Steven has a knack of getting great drummers with Marco minnemann as well in his solo project
agreed!
I need to check out so much more my friend, hes awesome!
This video contains what is very likely to be the best drum performance I've ever seen.
His fills are absolutely godlike.
everyone in both his solo band and porcupine is amazing
Arriving Somewhere but not Here. Amazing track.
Thanks Franco!
YES!!!
where's the video? :(
I find the live Chicago version better, imo.
Fun Fact: The Solo on the album version is played by Alex Lifeston of Rush
Really?
ironpego yep look up the liner notes of Porcupine Tree’s Fear of a Blank Planet. It’s say special guest is Robert Fripp and Alex Lifeston
Well yes and love Rush and all that, but I would go out on a limb here and say that John Wesleys version is better.
So glad you found Porcupine Tree, they're such an awesome band. The Blackest Eyes and Arriving Somwehere But Not Here are 2 of their songs you should try looking into
Thanks joseph Ill check those out!
Welcome to Porcupine Tree. Once you arrive you may never leave.
Hard to recommend a single song so try "Hatesong" live off Arriving Sonewhere... DVD.
Dude Porcupine Tree is like the soundtrack to life, every song off every album is a masterpiece!
This ^
Steve Perry yes yes yes
"Normal" - from this same show.
Thanks steve, i need to watch a full DVD man, see the whole jigsaw together!
The legendary 013...
Hey Ruben! Do more Opeth please :) \\m//
you're the fucking man ruben!
We have to do suggestions for the rest of our lives...I look forward to it and I hope you do too :)
I fuckin love this song, and I fuckin LOVE your reaction too! Some other dudes who do reactions hardly react at all. They sit there, quietly, through the song, and when it is finished they hardly say anything about the song. But you make all the right comments during the song, like when you go "wooow" at a drum fill. That's what a reaction is supposed to be! Music invokes something, or should at least, and you clearly let that shine through, and that's what I love about your reactions more than most others who do the same kind of thing. And when the song is finished you actually say stuff that makes sense, and that I can relate to. Keep that up, cause you're doing a fuckin great job with this!
Now...as a fan of Porcupine Tree I have to give some suggestions. I have quite an extensive list actually...but I'm going to just say this: Arriving somewhere but not here.
Of course you should also react to some of Steven Wilsons solo stuff. Either Drive Home, Routine or Harmony Korine is a good start.
I tend to listen to heavier songs, but this is one of the best songs ever made in my opinion
Its stunning man!
It's really impossible to go wrong with any live Porcupine Tree. I've seen them twice and they are hands down the best live band I've ever seen. I saw them open for Yes, one of the greatest prog acts of all time, and I honestly felt bad for Yes. Porcupine Tree's set was an impossible act to follow even for a legendary band. Steven Wilson's live performances are equally incredible. You might try the live versions Holy Drinker or The Watchmaker. Absolutely stunning.
This is to me undoubtedly the best song ever written. THE band that truly inspired me to learn to play guitar, sing and write music. Trains is also an emotional masterpiece of a song that everybody that has heard of PT needs to listen to. That song has moved me so much over the years.
Also Colin Edwin constantly looks like the happiest, most content man on the planet when he lays down the groove. A lot of his basslines made me pick up bass for many years too.
I'm sure you've looked up more information on Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree after watching this but here's some if you haven't.. Steven Wilson is the brainchild of Porcupine Tree. In fact, it started as a solo project for him. He wrote all the music for Porcupine Tree. However, Gavin Harrison's drumming, Richard Barbieri's keyboards, Colin Edwin's bass and John Wesley's live performances on guitar and backing vocals are just a great combination. Not to mention Chris Maitland's drumming before Gavin Harrison took over.
Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth is hugely influenced by Porcupine Tree. In fact, he at least said a while back that they were his favorite band ever. Steven Wilson is a big part of Opeth's sound starting with Blackwater Park.
Anyway, Steven Wilson is now a solo artist and I'm sure others will recommend you listen to some of that stuff (very powerful stuff with an incredible backing band comprising of heavy-hitters Guthrie Govan, Marco Minneman and others, although the backing band tends to change each album.
He's had numerous side-projects while he was still working on Porcupine Tree. Blackfield is a great duo between him and Israeli musician/songwriter Aviv Geffen. Steven Wilson is no longer apart of Blackfield but Blackfield I and II are great albums that are more pop sounding with tons of heart-wrenching tracks.
Porcupine Tree is indefinitely on hiatus because Steven Wilson enjoys his complete freedom to tread in different musical territories as a solo musician once again (including jazz, pop, electronic, and still a solid dose of prog rock).
Long story short, Steven Wilson is God.
Porcupine Tree has never been his favourite band, he obviously loves them but they're not
"To this day they remain my favorite band.. probably my top 5 favorite bands of all time" - Mikael Akerfeldt (2007)
can you send me a link or something?
Thanks for this information steve, i feel more prepared to delve deeper now haha!
I wonder if he and Devin Townsend would try making some experimental extraordinary experiences anytime...
They're already legends, but if linked, would also be of the most epic duo project of all times.
Words cannot describe their ingenuity and integrity. No matter how much they manage to experiment in one day haha :D
You lose yourself in Porcupine Tree. They cover different moods. Lazarus .. Trains.. Arriving somewhere not here. Shallow. Open car.. Blackest eyes.. cant beat it on a relaxing Sunday and every minute in between. Its what music should be. Love your reaction and hand banging.. I know you got it. Thank you for that.
This just might be cleanest, tightest live band I've ever seen.
You have to watch/react to two more Porcupine Tree songs, "Arriving Somewhere but not Here" and "Hatesong". Watch the live versions, both from a show in Chicago in 2005.
The first is their best song, in my opinion of course. The second is... well, you just have to experience it for yourself.
Arriving Somewhere But Not Here (live in Chicago)...
Words can't describe..must be experienced.
Thanks Nick!
I still would kill to see Alex play the solo in the studio :) John Wesley does an amazing job all the same :)
Been listening to these guys since the 90s. Seen them in the States a couple of times. They kept getting better and better....and then broke up! They're like Pink Floyd with a harder edge. The drummer is my second favorite behind Neil Peart.
Most bands have 2-4 songs per album but Porcupine Tree almost all the songs on every album or great these guys were just amazing
You should check out "Drive Home" by Steven Wilson
I sure will thanks!
You'll need some tissues for that one, mate! :))
Not very heavy but one of my all time favorites from Porcupine Tree is Gravity Eyelids, another great song that has a surreal ambient feel that you can easily lose yourself in.
My favorite song from that album
Literally anything off In Absentia... that album is a masterpiece.
The album version of this has Alex Lifeson (Rush) on it!
Everything Steven Wilson is involved in is brilliant!!
From the relatively little amount I have heard I have to agree Mathias!
Love Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson. Can't wait to watch them live in February!
Your reaction is EXACTLY how I reacted when I saw them live. I had only heard one Porcupine Tree song prior to seeing them live in Philadelphia, 2007. This was the 3rd song they played and after it I turned to my buddy and said "What the fuck just happened!?! Are you fucking kidding me?!?" And that was it...I was totally hooked. They ended the first set with Sleep Together - check that out Live from Tillburg as well...ridiculous.
I was able to count the time to your head mate, that's a great reaction, no words, just count!
Open Car! Open Car! Open Car! (If I say it three times, maybe it will come true)
You should react to Routine, from his solo project, the whole song/video is fantastic
I will check this out mario thanks!
TruantReacts Yes! Definitely Routine! 👍🏼👍🏼
That one is crazy good!
YES! Definitely react to "Routine"!
Yes... Routine by Steven Wilson is such a fantastic song.
The whole anesthetize album is amazing, my favorite song from that album and from Porcupine tree is Sleep together.
One of my all time favorites
its excellent dante!
TruantReacts Please check Jason Richardson - Hos Down... Technical Metal at it's best.
Also Jason Richardson - "Omni"!
Dude, Routine by Steven Wilson. The video is a masterpiece
Thanks buddy ill listen to this asap!
Tiziano Fratini Agreed! It's an amazing journey through an awful grief.
Hate song by Porcupine tree ... A blend of different time signatures, incredible !
absolute beauty! welcome to the prog. show my friend :D and well said about this being "Pink Floyd meeting Opeth"! Soooooo true!
Thanks Faraz it is fucking excellent man!
Truant reacts Do check out Edge of Sanity - Crimson, Diabolical Masquerade - Death's Design, and Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness for some awesome extreme progressive metal. They're all concept albums and two of them are single 45-min tracks. The other is a sound track to an unreleased Swedish horror movie. You won't be disappointed ;)
Arriving somewhere but not here by Porcupine Tree. Russia on Ice, Blackest eyes, start of something beautiful - other notable mentions. Loving your reactions!
This song saved my life, no joke.
Everyone in Porcupine Tree is amazing, but Steven Wilson is...I don't know. Somehow this song understood what I was going through at the time, and that tells me Wilson really has the perspective to understand pain like nobody else.
Gavin Fookin' Harrison, ladies and gentlemen.
That monster fill at 11:09 even got the usually serious looking Richard beaming with appreciation.
Another top notch band , so many amazing songs to choose from , two songs i would recommend are Fear of a blank planet , and Arriving somewhere but not here , both from i believe the same concert as this :)
Thanks for tuning in James!
Blackest eyes and Open Car were the first songs my dad showed me and man I’m so glad he did cause this band is fuckin awesome!
Awesome work man!!! Love this channel!
Gavin will forever be one of my favorite drummers of all time! His fills are always fucking amazing and always blows me away no matter who he plays with. He currently plays for King Crimson so you know he is good when a prog group of that caliber wants you.
Hey ernie always good to see you about man! The guy is fucking awesome!
I'm just discovering your channel today. Simple concept and nice idea you had : watching live performances you didn't know before, following tips and advices of members. I like your genuine reactions, well balanced, made of pure & straight emotion. Not talking too much while watching the sequences is also a plus, like a discrete buddy reacting at the perfect moments ! Your (kind) face expressions are talking by themselves... Cheers from France !
Porcupine Tree was and still is amazing. I am a huge fan.
Legendary! The variety, build-up and depth is amazing :)
Probably my favorite song by them
This band is brilliant! You have to listen to more of their music!!!
Arriving Somewhere But Not Here is epic too
I randomly listened to "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" from the same concert about 6 months ago. You're totally right about falling into their music, since then I've bought everything PT I can find and all of Steven's solo stuff. "Hand Cannot Erase" is on in my car permanently.
As others already have stated; "Routine" by Steven Wilson. Complete and utter masterpiece. The song along with the video is just too good.
so many requests for this one joel it must be special, ill do it asap!
Mother and Child Divided - Porcupine Tree
Huge fan of PT! I saw Steven Wilson earlier this year and his band played a bunch of Porcupine Tree songs. I wish they'd get back together. Steven Wilson's solo work is also very good, especially his last two records - Hand. Cannot. Erase. and The Raven that Refused to Sing.
Nice video! Porcupine Tree is to me one of the most enjoyable things I've found in years, and this song is just epic in every way, even more so this live version. It's incredible and never get tired of listening to it. Porcupine Tree gives a different experience with each album, so I recommend taking time and exploring all of it, my favourites besides Fear of a Blank Planet, are Deadwing and In Absentia, but also love Stupid Dream, The Sky Moves Sideways (as a full trip) and Voyage 34 (as another full trip).
Probably doesn't make sense to make a reaction video because is quite long, but one not-so-old progressive album that makes me keep coming back to it, and absolutely love is The Road of Bones by IQ, some people don't like his voice, but I think everything else on that full album is worth a good listen, and I believe is one of the best prog albums of recent years, highly recommended.
Russia On Ice from the album Lightbulb Sun. I love it, but not as much as Anesthetize.
That's the song that got me into porcupine tree
I think Fear of a Blank Planet is their best album. They are such an unusual band that they played for like twenty years and their best stuff is near the end. Wilson's solo albums are good. He's an amazing song writer. But it's almost exactly like Roger Waters without Pink Floyd. The two need each other. Wilson gets a little too self-indulgent without his band mates.
U gotta react to "Raider II". You would have never heard such a hauntingly beautiful song in your life.
Don't forget, Routine from his solo album
I would highly recommend listening to "Futile" by Porcupine Tree, some fucking great riffs!
The drum beat that starts at 9:02 is an uncontrollable headbobber.
Can't not bob your head when it is played.
Yep, been listening to Porcupine Tree since Opeth Damnation and have seen them as well. AMAZING band live as you can see. Awesome Jinjer Friday too, thanks always!
Thank you buddy glad youre still enjoying jinjer friday!
Pure genius!
You should check Haken - The Architect.
thanks love haken!
Seconded
Gavin's fills in this are the best drumming I've ever heard.
I never heard the studio version of this until AFTER the Tilburg video. In truth, the studio version sort of sounded like a demo for this one. These guys are almost better live, which has so many difficulties attached.
Truant, miss you man. Nobody does reactions like you. Where you at?
My favorite Porc song is Arriving Somewhere But Not Here. Check that one out too, and the song "Open Car" is pretty ridiculous!
Thanks buddy so many great requests for this band!
If you liked those heavy riffs then you’ll like their song Blackest Eyes. That has one of the heaviest riffs I’ve ever heard.
That groove at 9:03 is next level genius....
Got that right. Thats not a groove thats a trench right there!
Welcome to the Porcupine Tree family. Here are some of my favorite PT songs. Sever, Dark Matter, Arriving somewhere but not here. Halo, so many more, Enjoy
Nice one. and Steve Wilson solo lp are very good..too..
and I can recommend tou Steven Wilson's solo track called "Harmony Corine" or Porcupine Tree's "Arriving somewhere but not here" ...
This Live performance is unbelievable... Too bad they don't have many songs as heavy as this one :( !
If you want a good laugh and a happy feel, you should react to Thank You Scientist "Mr Invisible" Sun Session. They are incredible musicians.
Second that one!
sounds very interesting thanks man!
Try out Dead Letter Circus - One Step. Another great Aussie band, and good friends with the guys from Karnivool.
Love me some porcupine tree! If you've never checked out the band baroness I think you should! BARONESS - Chlorine & Wine [Official Music Video]
do The Aristocrats - Waves
Ill take a look buddy thanks!
Yes please, great suggestion! I love all three members but Guthrie Govan is amazing on another level. I can watch his interviews all day talking about guitars although I don't know how to play it :D He's a storyteller both literally and musically
How about every time I die-wanderlust. One of the best bands ever, with one of the best singers/lyricist.
Didn't hear this song for a while. So I came on YT for Anesthetize and found this video randomly. Not disappointed :p
Actually, I enjoied your video, it was like sharing emotions while listening. Thank you
Blackest Eyes. Arriving Somewhere... Shesmovedon (Deadwing).
Gavin Harrison joined up with The Pineapple Thief for their latest record, he's just such a crisp drummer anything he does just melts in my ears. Anyway, you should take a listen to "The Pineapple Thief - In Exile". the entire album "From Your Wilderness" is really good, but one song at a time eh. :)
12:00 to 15:00 always gives me goosebumps,
Ladies and gentlemen, you are witnessing two of the best prog composers and drummers in the world at work. Stellar musicality, stellar performance. Too bad Porcupine Tree is no more. SW solo never lived up to his own pace he set in this band.
you have to watch whole Porcupine tree and Steven Wilson's music, because I can't say if it isonly one song what I don't like or I skip on my player. No. . Wilson is just music genius... !
Gavin in Drums is so good😀👍
Now that you've discovered Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson, I highly recommend you check out their song Trains or Mr. Wilson's song Drive Home. Both tracks are emotive masterpieces.
I would recommend Devin Townsend, or Riverside - if you love prog. Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson's solo stuff is amazing.
Maurice Leo Lionhart I haven't seen anyone else recommend Riverside. So many people out there that haven't been exposed to their excellence yet.
Truant, you might want to check out Arrivng Somewhere But Not Here by Porcupine Tree.
Enjoyed your reaction bro. One of the most amazing, musical bands around eh! Gonna see if you like Tesseract next ha...clicking....now
Suggestion: Porcupine tree Dark Matter- Live
PLEASE LISTEN TO "THE HATE SONG "
Same concert, Live at Tilburg
Please brother, you felt this one
The Drummer is🤗😊🤩/ Sorry,I forget, it is Gavin Harrison wow
Fear of a Blank Planet
It's the opening song from this concert :)
I love both Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree, and I adore how much heavier Porcupine Tree were. A song like "Cut Ribbon" really show cases that, though I believe there is both a Porcupine Tree version of that song and a Wilson one. I'd check that out next if I were you. Keep up the work my man.
great recommendation thanks buddy!
Fuckin A man! This is the first PT reaction I have seen!
Amazing song!!!!
try the whole Fear of a Blank Planet album. Their masterpiece in my opinion.
Way Out Of Here from the save DVD :)
You need to do one on the start of something beautiful..porc tree
Would love to see you react to 'Hatesong' from Arriving Somewhere DVD or 'Dark Matter' from the same DVD this vid is from. Porcupine Tree is incredible, especially this particular lineup with Gavin, Colin, Richard and the lone American, John Wesley who is an awesome musician in his own right.
Check out Arriving Somewhere But Not Here and Fear of a Blank Planet. Really just check out of all of Porcupine Tree, them and Opeth are the best.
That whole album is a beast. Would also recommend dead wing. They're so good live. Lazarus wedding nails so many
Gave the same recommendations to Ruben Buijs but you two guys are my go to so I figure I would leave you the same list I left him:
(A bit lighter)
Porcupine Tree - Gravity Eyelids
Our Oceans-Let Me,
Jolly - Still a Dream,
(Kinda Heavy)
Dethklok - Morte Lumina.
Volumes - Finite
Tool - Aenima
Soilwork - Epitome
(Heavier)
Make Them Suffer - Uncharted or Ether,
AVERSIONS CROWN - Ophiophagy,
Rings of Saturn - Natural Selection and Godless Times
Fallujah - Abandon
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Personally I think you should check out Buying New Soul, from the same concert, for your next reaction. I loved watching your reactions it really brought me back to the moment when I first watched the video a couple years ago.
Thanks Corey, seeing someone love something you love is a special thing! Thats the idea man, that way we both take something!
Excellent choice. My favorite PT song from my favorite PT album.
If you dig them, check out OSI, a progressive/experimental rock/metal band that features Gavin Harrison (PT's drummer), Jim Matheos (Fates Warning), Kevin Moore (Chroma Key, Dream Theater), and has previously featured Steven Wilson, Mike Portnoy and Mikael Åkerfeldt. For the first song, I'd recommend Invisible Men. Brilliant stuff.
Another awesome song from that concert is Sleep Together. ruclips.net/video/kpw7cBBrSA4/видео.html
Steven Wilson also has a solo self titled band and he has a 20 minute epic song called Raider II. ruclips.net/video/qR2entmgZIQ/видео.html
