Just wanted to throw in a quick note to say that John Wesley, the guitarist on the far left who took the first solo, is hands down one of the nicest musicians I have ever met. I have had the good fortune to meet him twice when he was opening for Marillion, and he was incredibly gracious, kind, and keen to give full credit to the other musicians in his band for their contributions. A World Class musician and absolute gentleman.

Totally agree. Wes was not only their live secret weapon (guitar and vox), but he's an incredibly nice guy. I got to meet him before a PT show in Philly with a few friends and he took the time to chat with all of us. Super cool memory for us. Porcupine Tree is one of the finest live bands I have ever seen.

IMO the turning point in the music of PT was when Gavin Harrison joined them. His drumming put the music to a higher level. Same when he joined Pineapple Thief.

    • @jackpittens796
      @jackpittens796 2 года назад +3

The trigger for Gavin joining PT was when Chris Maitland quite the band before recording In Absentia since Chris didn't like the direction Steve was taking the band in. For In Absentia Gavin was initially only hired as a section drummer to fill in for the departed Chris, but after the recording was asked to join the band full time. Good move! No doubt Gavin played a role in the new sound, but I think it was mostly driven by Steve. I like PT's full catalog, but my favourites are those with Gavin. Kind of missing Edwin on the new album.

Raider I'm 61 years old and was introduce to this band with this very song which just blew me away, and yes I will be seeing them 9/20 in Chicago. I couldn't get any of my friends to come (some just can't afford the price) but I was not going to miss this opportunity so I said screw it I'll go myself.

What I like the most about Porcupine Tree is Steven Wilson's mind. The brainwaves that make him Genesis flow into Symphony X, avant-garde prog-rock into agressive prog-metal. It's magic. Like soft cooked bratwurst and chili tacos on the same plate. Cheers Nick & Lex. Warm greetings from Belgium

I know what you mean.....blown away. The whole Tilburg concert is out of this world. Can't get any better.
About 15 years ago a friend was visiting me in the forest with his son for some days and before they left my friend told his son to leave all they had done on my computer. It was there for one and a half year. I did try some songs every month, but no. Then suddenly after one and a half year I found the song that opend the door, then I didn't listen to anything else for more than a year, in my house, in the car. The Tilburg concert is my all time favortite.

I've been a fan of Porcupine Tree since first hearing about them in 2013. Sadly by then, they had stopped being a band, so I had no expectations of ever seeing them live except through their concerts available on RUclips. I just found them incomparable live.
But I will get to see them live for my 71st birthday in September in Denver. So sometimes wishes do come true. I will be traveling from Puerto Rico to see them.
Glad you liked Anesthetize, but then again, what's not to like by Porcupine Tree?

I heard Porcupine Tree for the first time about 5 or so years ago ( I'm 62) and IMMEDIATELY bought everything in the catalog, including Steven Wilson's solo stuff and his work with Blackfield (another ridiculously good collaboration), and never looked back. Steven Wilson rarely makes a bad song ( I would argue that Voyage 34: The Complete Trip is his worst outing excluding Phase 1) and whatever he touches turns to gold. He is not the godfather of progressive rock though as you mentioned but more a preservationist of the genre in his remixes and musical influences (notice I said remixes and NOT remastering because there is a vast difference between the two, remastering is just a marketing excuse to sell more previously released cd's by just making the music louder for radio and for cars, it does little to improve the sound like remixing actually does) I particularly enjoy his later more heavy stuff because as you both say he mixes his music up. His heavy stuff has peaks and valleys and does not bang you over the head for 6-10 minutes or longer, he gives his music time to breathe like a feature film would do and I appreciate it. Even his hard stuff has melody and beauty just like his atmospheric musical passages which elevate you and the music. Just to button this up, when you hear a Porcupine Tree song you know it's going to have every element you want in prog music, melody, atmosphere, head banging, peaks and valleys, and expert musicianship. PS: listen to Phase 1 of Voyage 34 and it's literally Pink Floyds Another Brick in The Wall riff slowed down just a bit for about 3-4 minutes, then it's his take on the PF sound complete with a Gilmour reminiscent extended guitar solo, its the best tune on the album. As always keep up the great work and keep loving each other.

What ?!? First time listening, guys, really ? 😵I'd almost like to be in Lex's shoes to experience again my first "blown away" sensations! 🤪🥳🤯😎I own the dvd/blu ray of this fabulous concert, bought when it came out in 2010. Very precisely, it's been recorded at "013" (Poppodium), Tilburg, The Netherlands on 15th and 16th October 2008. At the time, Porcupine Tree is : Steven Wilson, Gavin Harrison, Richard Barbieri (keyboards) and Colin Edwin (bass, but he's no longer part of the band ☹for their unexpected but stupendous come back with a new album and a Tour). + John Wesley (guitars & backing vocals), here, a very great guy & gifted musician who had completed the band on stage since the mid-2000s.

You both are awesome in your reactions! Nick you nailed it when you said “It’s just enough”, though you didn’t finish your comment which I think was exactly how I felt. When I listened to them the first time some 15 days ago, my thoughts were they play just enough of metal/death metal, etc. They take you to the edge of almost to much and then bam they transition. It’s a masterpiece. Like I said, I’m a fan of “15 days”. I’m 59 and until 15 days ago Pink Floyd was my favorite band for the last 45 yrs. I’ve already accumulated 14 CD/DVD’s of PT with more on the way. Amazing song and reaction! This is the song that crossed me over from Rush to PT in 2007, given that Alex Lifeson performed the guitar solo in the first section. Alex lured me in so to speak, then PT sunk the hook with their incredible music. The second section (The Pills In Me) is one of the most excellent passages that I have ever experienced in rock music. That riff and that groove! And the third section is so ethereal and beautiful. Glad you are both enjoying it as much as many of us have over the last 15 years. Can't wait to see them again in DC on September 18th. Highly recommend Way Out Of Here, Cheating the Polygraph, Arriving Somewhere (Not here, and Trains. So many great songs...All monster musicians and Steven Wilson simply is a mad genius. Cheers and happy listening!

What's all this I keep hearing about Porky Pinetree? Freakin' me aout! Fact is, I was going to tell you that my other favorite music reviewers are all over Porky Pinetree, but I don't know them that well, and so this was an overdue gift to myself, because wow. Music lives! Progress lives! And these are the good ol' days. People will look back on the music being created by masters like Mr. Jim Newstead, and yet others, like yer Porky Pinetree here, and conclude that the spirit of creation lives on, and is, indeed, in very capable cloven hooves. Jim recently had a best of prog and best of metal "contest", the results of which are most informative, and surely to your tastes.
The reviewers who have reviewed the prog classics (if correctly reviewed) are all basically what we used to call "heads", meaning "nose breathers" and "book readers". Y'all have cemented a solid fan of Mr. Pinetree. Peace through warmth and kindness.

My favorite thing about Steven Wilson is that he can’t even read music. He has no great knowledge of musical theory. No formal education in music or sound engineering. Now think about all he has accomplished on just raw talent. It’s crazy. Great job

    • @NicknLex
      @NicknLex  2 года назад +9

Yes. I think most of the best musicians and composers didn't read music. Allan Holdsworth didn't read music. Mark Knopfler, Jimmy Hendrix , Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, Stevie Wonder, the Beatles ! I read music and I know theory pretty well but I rather not because you do somehow set boundaries that a self taught musicians don't take into consideration. You're just free of rules

Yes. Finally! This is what we have been trying to tell you guys for as long as you've been reacting to Porcupine Tree.
There is a list of PT songs that I love but never listen to the studio versions. I don't prefer live versions... ever. This band though, they are so clean, so tight. Steven's voice is better live, more substantial. Gavin is always great but in his subtle yet dynamic way he's better live. I've been trying to put my finger on how he could possibly be better live. He adds small over the bar line fills (before and after the bar line) and somehow more punch; nothing outrageous or attention-seeking... just perfect and relentless!
-Arriving Somewhere but not Here live from Chicago. Steven's guitar solos are just... so... good!
-Way Out of Here live from Tilburg. (Check out the song's origin story first) Gavin! Gavin! Gavin!
-The Start of Something Beautiful live from Chicago. Funky gem of a tune.
-Cheating the Polygraph live from Tilburg. Gavin Harrison again!
Never forget, this band has TWO musical geniuses.
Thank You for this reaction. You've made my day.

Great song, so glad you both got to see them live. My intro to PT was as an opening act for Yes (without Jon Anderson). I didn't know there was an opening act and PT was already on stage when I got there. I was 5th row, center stage. I sat down and was immediately engulfed in their sound. Blown away is an understatement. I didn't even care if Yes performed that night. I just wanted more Porcupine Tree. The next day was the beginning of my PT/Steven Wilson collection. Check out Steven's side projects, Blackfield and No-Man when you get a chance.

Great reaction to a fantastic band and song. I first discovered them in the summer of 2008 while recovering from a bad car accident (some idiot ran a red light). That gave me plenty of time to go through their entire catalog and I was hooked. Fortunately I was able to see them for The Incident tour and then saw Steven for the Hand Cannot Erase and the Raven That Refused To Sing tours. Wish I could see them this year but the tickets I saw were too much. Hopefully they will create a DVD of the tour.

Steven Wilson has done an album with the lead singer of Opeth, it's called Storm Corrosion, it's quite experimental, no drums, only cymbals.

Steven Wilson - vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards, piano, synthesisers, hammer dulcimer, banjo, sampler, various instruments (1987-2010; 2021-present)
Richard Barbieri - keyboards, synthesizers, piano and sound processing (1993-2010; 2021-present)
Gavin Harrison - drums and percussion (2002-2010; 2021-present)
Colin Edwin - bass, double bass (1993-2010)
John Wesley - Touring guitar, backing vocals (2002-2010)
Randy McStine - guitar, backing vocals (2022-present)
    Nathan Navarro - bass (2022-present)
N&L . . . . GO get tix to see Porky Tree when they tour the new album. Seen them only twice (Deadwing and Fear of a Blank Planet) but its AMAZING to see and _feel_ what they do 🙂. And you have the Live DVD/CD on your shelf for "Arriving Somewhere..." to enjoy :). And of note, that is "John Wesley" on back-up guitar and vocals (touring musician). That familiar "Pratt" sound is Gavin's "Bell Tree" which looks like a set of tiny cymbals. A very unique sound.
The Guitars are PRS (Paul Reed Smith) "Custom 22", same _Gibson_ style that Opeth use (PRS Mikael Akerfeldt SE Signature) but they use various customs as well.
    - Soo cool that Lexi really got into it and just about headbanging! :D Woo Hoo!

I just watched them do this song live in a performance every bit as good as the one here. It was the highlight of the show for me, being in a crowd of people all going nuts takes it to another level. It's a miracle they put out new music and are touring after 12 years off so if you can get to a show, do it! They haven't lost a thing and you may never get another chance to experience it.
