    Most shelters love donations of things like hangers because that's the stuff people don't think of. I worked in a domestic violence shelter and we always needed hangers and stuff like that.

    My storage unit is my attic 😂
    I’m the 6th generation living in this house, and let’s just say there is everything from furniture to pure trash from all previous generations up there... Also I might mention that I’m in a wheelchair and while I would be able to get up there (with help obviously) I would need some serious time, energy and man power to make it worth while. Cleaning and organizing 250 years of clutter isn’t an easy task 😂 plus there have been renos done so I’m not even sure beds or couches would fit back down the stairs. Although it would be therapeutic to throw them out through the window lol

Is it weird to say I'm proud of you Sarah? I went thru this same thing last year when i cleaned out my storage at my parents shed that was all me. So i know exactly what you went thru. I learned awhile back from a minimalist video that there never used to be storage places till they saw a need for them as everyone at time didnt wanna toss anything so was able to pay to store it away from home anytime. so u like kinda wasted money paying for space instead of just tossing what u not need really. we used to have a big room and then moved to smaller to pay less then got rid of them all together cause cost so much lol. they are not bad to have , but it just shows how much u really got if u gotta store at a place to make room for stuff u really want lol. so good u had chance to clean it out and decide what u needed to keep and toss or donate rest. so now u can save money more since not gotta keep the space no more to pay for over time.

Then when they moved after college, they just got more storage space. We have a seriously consumerist society. My mother even just bought a three bedroom house a few weeks ago. Its pretty big, and has a shed. Shes using a bedroom as a walk in closet, and has four closets filled with clothes. Its seriously disturbing how regular this is.

    I just can’t see the value in paying for a storage unit for years. Why not donate the stuff, and save the money you’d spend storing it?

    I just went through the same thing about a year ago. It was so emotional and at times frustrating because my boyfriend was trying to help me, however i was hanging onto things that were hindering me. I gave away some things my aunt gave that i didnt need and unfortunately she recently passed away. So that was the most difficult. But in the end it didnt matter because my memories with her are worth more than anything i was keeping around.

    My husband and I got a storage unit when we got engaged (when we were both still living with our parents). We were buying furniture or having it given to us and a unit saved us so much hassle. It's impossible to fit two couches, a dining room table, and a bunch of kitchen stuff in two bedrooms (with bedroom stuff)! My sister's storage unit was basically trash though. Everyone is different.

    This was very therapeutic. We have a three bedroom house that’s been sitting for ten years completely full. When we moved we took our personal items and some sentimental things and left everything else. Who does that?! I’m going to start going back over this week and getting it cleared out. Like you said, if we needed anything we would’ve taken it out by now.

    Do you ever feel a moral guilt by getting rid of things knowing that it might end up in a landfill? I feel like I struggle so hard to get rid of things that I know I don't even want because I don't want to feel like I'm polluting the planet :/

    • @veve7349
      @veve7349 5 лет назад +4

      I get that, but it makes no sense to keep these things only because you feel guilty. I think as long as you learn from it it's fine - now you know what to avoid to buy in the first place. That way you will make a change in the long run.

    There is one building of storage units in my town, called "house of the things", but in Italy where I live isn't so common to use them. Actually now things are changing, consumerism is getting even here and people are starting to buy more and more. I'm in engeneering minor (last year of the first 3 year) so I'm super poor and super minimalistic ahahaha, I do actually keep decluttering my small room!

    I am very impressed by you living in such a small home. It is not really small but compared to my apartment it is. I just find I need more and more space all the time. Not that I have much stuff (I am actually a minimalist). I just want to walk around and feel all the free space (I am really weird like that 🙈). I feel claustrophobic really easily.

    • @sarahhawkinson

      thank you! I’ve always loved having a small space and seeing how I can store things and make use of the space. when I played with barbies I would make their whole house in one shoe box and loved designing the small space. I feel like I was just made for small spaces! lol

    It is very cathartic to do this and it can be so emotionally draining as well.... in Britain they have a show called "The Life Laundry", where they just go in and force people to go through their crap and get rid of stuff that they don't want or need. I just love the title of that show.
