I retired and de-cluttered when I stopped telling myself I was going to "sell" stuff, that held me back. I found a great charity that gives their donated stuff away and actually helped the community. They have food give-a-ways, clothing, shoes......stuff if someones house burned down. They sent a trailer full after a hurricane. That was the push I needed. My stuff, the grown kids stuff, different hobbies at different times.......gone. All I want left in this house is the "now" stuff. The things I need to maintain the house, lawnmower and outside tools, inside cleaning supplies, my maintenance & fun supplies (artist). Oh...supplies for the dog & cats.....everything else goes that doesn't have or will have a purpose. I feel better:)

@@simplehappy7025 I understand if there is a need, but I didn't see the time investment, aggravation vs $ return. I think a lot of women deal with their moms dumping the things she doesn't want, the grown kids not taking ownership of their stuff, and just life. it gets away from you. I am not a hoarder and it still has taken a couple years to sort, then sort again and get the right mindset:)

I love to sell things and I love making extra money. I will NEVER donate my items for someone else to decide who to give them to. I know who they will give them to and it’s not who I would want them to go to. Too much of that going on already. I decide where my items go.

Fifty years ago, my sister-in-law started tossing out flyers without glancing at them the second she took them out of the mailbox. She was ahead of her time, for sure. Now in her seventies, she is in great financial shape, not because they made so much money, but because she extended the principal behind that simple action to all financial decisions. The same ideas have also served us well.

I went through a spell of watching way too many beauty channels a year ago and kept buying the newest, greatest magic potions. I finally had enough of that and am working my way through all the products. For me, going into stores like Ulta and Sephora is just too tempting and needs to be a rare treat.

It took me decades to realize that my need to have spares was because of growing up in communities that didn't have consisted access to the goods we used. We made the trek to the store twice a month and they might not have what you needed when you got there so we always kept 1 full spare and added it to our list as soon as we opened a new container. Now I'm walking distance to any number of shops and my house doesn't need its own inventory.

Your point about shopping the sales and stocking up for the year is very relatable. I used to do this as well. It became too stressful always trying to juggle finding space for everything. It also led to buying lots more organizers. As I began decluttering this year and slowing my spending, I've emptied many of those and realized I simply don't need them. I now prioritize living with less.

I toss any paper catalogs and coupons that come into my home into the recycling bin without even looking at them. I get far fewer of them now than I did when I used to order things through catalogs. I have also reduced my inventory of "backup" items, since there are very few I couldn't get along without for a few days if needed. I plan my meals for the week around what proteins are on sale, and usually only have enough food in the house for two weeks tops. I'm surrounded by grocery stores. I won't starve.

Umm, I never get stuck with Costco items I hate. I just return them. I also repurpose items. I had 3 large bottles of Olay moisturizing body wash that I wasn’t bad, just not my favorite. I tried it for cleaning my makeup brushes and it works even better than Dr. Bronner, my previous favorite. The moisturizers break down the makeup and gets them clean and soft.

It was incredibly funny to see a shampoo ad right after you spoke about shampoo ads and trends 😂
Edit, on the matter of stocking up and peace of mind, I personally find that the more dangerous thing is stocking up on things I'll end up not liking anymore, or that I'll get bored of. But I love love love having multiples of things I use up again and again, like skincare, toothpaste, certain cleaning products, toilet paper. It's so nice to not worry about whether or not that thing will be available in stores and that I might have to drive around looking for it when I run out, I love seeing my bathroom drawers stocked like a store, but *only* when it's something I know I'll for sure keep using, and keep LOVING! If it's not visible clutter, I find that to be one of the best uses for closed shelves and drawers. Saving money, saving time by not having to go to the store each time you need one thing, less risk of buying other random stuff during that store trip, not *needing* to keeo checking if you're running out, all that :)

I really need to go back to reducing my exposure to commercials that tempt me. I am considering getting back adblock. I realized I am exposed to a lot of advertising and showed products I never would have thought of needing the plus side is when I do a search and then something doesn't meet an explanation I can just wait and all my adds or most will be targeted in that category. And I get introduced to a lot more companies than my original search. The trick with that is waiting and not searching for things that will tempt me. I can very easily forget how much of what my actual needs are. I often remind myself I don't like to buy merch. I like cute little says their fun but really I want a capsule wordrobe and plain dishes
