    About Eli's pawnee:
    The version I watched of the show was translated to Spanish, it was translated as "Te quiero" which is not exactly the same as "I love you" but it's often translated as such. The same happens with the English "I cherish you", it's not used with the exact same meaning in Spanish, but it's often translated as "Te amo" which is "I love you". The meaning for all these words is endearment, they are used to express affection, I don't think that the misusage of the words takes away from the meaning: Eli loves Cornelia.

      I'm from Chile! Yes, "I love you" carries more weight in Spanish, while I recognize that "I cherish you" in English, particularly during this time, has a lot more weight. Neither changes the fact that I'm very sad at their parting.

      My favorite film has been The Last of the Mohicans with Daniel Day Lewis since I watched it three times in the theater in 1992. Nothing else has ever come close until this series. I don’t think that anything can ever change it from being my all time favorite, unless they make a second season with the same two lead actors. I can think of a dozen topics or time periods easily: the early life of Eli and Cornelia and how they became the people they are; Eli’s life in the military and the 15 years when he first cashiered out in 1875 until the beginning of this series; what happened to Eli in the last 13 years; Cornelia’s life from the time she was raped until this series begins; what was she doing until 1903. I strongly feel that more of the American Indian story needs to be shown; American Indians should be consultants, actors and participants in all aspects of the filming.
      I have created an alternate ending because I can’t accept that they actually parted. It is how the complete mini-series would end. It’s not as if we know what happened to Eli or what Cornelia did after that last goodbye. She’s still alive 13 years later. In my mind, it was not over! I envision that she gave Eli just enough time to ride ahead and she followed him before revealing that she is there. Eli would not have sent her away. They are together until they decide for her to go to England for better medical treatment and Eli will follow. I believed Eli when he said to David Melmont’s inquiry if he was going to take care of her: “I’m looking forward to it”. Eli is that kind of person. The last scene will be Eli coming down the ramp from the cruise ship with Cornelia waiting for him on the dock. I don’t need to see them part permanently. Almost everyone has to face that ending one day.
      I have learned more about the American Indians and the atrocities that the settlers did to them since watching the series. I researched Pawnee culture which made me understand what Eli’s position was before he lost his family. Even things like “First Shirt” that he was called by the trooper. The series had a whole other layer a viewer wouldn’t know unless they have knowledge of the Indian culture. I love British historical fiction so I knew a lot about Cornelia when she said she was Lady Cornelia Locke but for people who don’t, that extra layer could be revealed in other episodes that need to be made.
      So, what do you think? Should I write Amazon Studios Film and BBC asking for them to hire Hugo Blick to continue the series?! 😊

      I binge-watched it last weekend and since then I have been obsessively replaying my favourite scenes over and over and over. Every one of Emily Blunt's badass moments-- there are so many! Nailing the bushwhacker in the back with his own bow and arrow. Walking the horse back to drown the first scumbag. Taking out the creepy old woman. Surprise kill that really impressed me: when the indigenous woman takes her gun, only to wind up gutted in the belly. Also: Chaske Spencer's response to two of those kills: Just a bemused "huh" when she uses the horse to drown the guy. Then later, a quieter version--a grunt of surprise really--after she kills the bad guy with an arrow in the back. (Dude, she TOLD you she could hit a bullseye at 200 feet, lol). Also: Chaske chambering a bullet in mid-air to kill the villain's henchman. Damn, I watched that moment in slow motion multiple times. That takes skill! Their last goodbye. Kills me every time. Also: Stephen Rea creates a memorable character, and his impatience with their multiple romantic goodbyes gives levity to a heavy emotional moment. Also, that last shot on the plains of Emily's character catching up to Stephen Rea's sheriff: "That's it girl, keep coming" and riding with a stoic look on her face, like someone who has been riding these plains her entire life and seen the worst that life can give.

    I binged watched The English as soon as it came out here in the UK a few months ago. I loved everything about it: the characters, special mention to Chaske Spencer and Emily Blunt who gave exquisite and exceptional performances as Eli and Cornelia, the cinematography, the slow build of the story line, the themes of loss, loyalty, greed, racism, feminism, selflessness and last but not least love. The love between Eli and Cornelia transcended the physical (we came to know why) but it didn’t seem to matter because their love was based on the spiritual; two damaged souls who connected because they understood each other. That final parting between them, even though I knew it was coming ended me and I blubbed like a baby. A thoughtful and intelligent piece of film making imo. It’s one of the best series I’ve watched for a long time and I consider it a masterpiece 👏🏽☺️

    I want to put forth an idea, and please feel free to discuss it.
    I think the story would also have been emotionally impactful and satisfying if they had stayed together, if Eli had run away with Cornelia back to England or to some corner of the West. The fact that they find peace, comfort and purpose in each other after suffering so much - Eli being almost exterminated and having to ally with his exterminators because of it, and Cornelia being sexually abused and been given an affliction that will kill her slowly - means that they deserve a small measure of peace and happiness, defined on their terms. Their love story is not just bittersweet, it's painful! I don't think Cornelia would've done Eli an injustice by being with him despite her illness. That's his decision to make, not hers, and I think he would've made it gladly, even if it prevented him from having a family and a normal life. It is clear from the series that their relationship transcends what we define as a romantic relationship. They are fated, it is their destiny "in the stars", and rather than having to go through life alone for the rest of their life, having just a few years of peace and happiness together would've been better. I think Eli, as much as it would pain him, would've decided to stay with Cornelia until the end, and I think Cornelia, as much as she thought it selfish to let him, should've let him.
    I'm terrible at explaining things but I just feel that the amount of suffering they went through was so heartbreaking to me psychologically, that I think that having them separate for life after finding each other would be a greater agony than having them spend a limited time together in peace.
    Thoughts?

      I don’t know. Of course, I’m heartbroken they had to part but it seemed that Eli understood that from beginning more or less. But they could’ve gone away together and live peacefully. Especially with the sheriff on their side.

      @x_aj_x1157 Год назад +5

      @@maxinehassan8445 They used Mercury as a treatment for the symptoms, but there was no real cure for Syphilis back then. Syphilis could only be cured with the development of Penicillin, which wasn't discovered until 1928. Even if Cornelia lived that long (unlikely) too much damage would have been done that no amount of Penicillin could undo.

    Wow! What a discovery- someone mentioned in comments that she thought Eli was actually in the tent, looking thru the ripped tent, when Cornelia has come to give White Moon the talisman he gave to Cornelia when they parted. Well, EUREKA. I was watching that last episode again and the volume on my TV was quite loud.
    At around point 1:08-1:09.51 when Cornelia says ‘Take it while it is still mine to give’ and before she says ‘Pease,’ you can HEAR from the tent a males voice say ‘Huh’ just like Eli says when he’s amazed at Cornelia backing the horse up in episode 1. What a love story Hugo wrote.

    Why send her all the way out there, just to have Thomas die of a random flood as she arrives. I know it was about her justice/ revenge for her and her son, and her journey with Eli. But I still wanted them to reunite, and for him to explain. If she couldnt take Eli back to England, why not Thomas so she wouldn’t be alone forever.😭
