I loved this movie so much that I bought it. Gabriel is the epitome of faithful love. So calmed and assured, no matter who came between them. He captured my heart.
I read the book and thought being the strong headed woman, she was maybe a bit afraid of Oak because she knew with all her being that its him she truly loved...but to truly love is to give up your power which it was not in her nature to do...so she surrenders in the end because she has suffered enough..
priscilla birungi but she married so I don’t think that’s necessarily the case. In my opinion, I think she didn’t want to be one of those girls to be controlled and she didn’t want to be thrown away “and when your thyme it is past and gone, he’ll care no more for you” but ironically she ended up marrying someone who was using her and she avoided the person who wasn’t.
@@bluebell8557 Yes also when I read the book, Troy seemed like the first man to make her feel powerless and that is why she fell head over heels with him. I think the case of Gabriel Oak is a tale as old as time, where a man isn't so attractive to a woman at first, but proves how trustworthy and reliable he is, eventually winning her heart. I think that romantic ideas of heart fluttering scenarios where women feel anxious and vulnerable rather than comfortable around a man ( as with Troy) is what really disadvantages sweet and devoted men like Oak.
Strong women tend to reject their match, especially as their perfect match tends to be as strong or stronger than they are, in character and will. Her rejection of Gabriel stemmed from her knowing, deep in her soul, that she would grow to need him-- he would be her ballast and provide her a steadfast and powerful foundation. She did everything to free herself from reaching out for this, as she desired being that for herself. In the end, she only broke down because he was finally going to walk away and despite herself she didn't-- she really couldn't live her life without him in it. She wasn't selfish. She was afraid to need him. She was terrified of loving him. For good and for ill, I am akin to Bathsheba.
@@pamelamotyka8036 😀 Ha! She was strong, selfish and vane. These are not mutually exclusive characterristics. Her strength grew more entrenched over time, while with maturity she outgrew much of her selfishness and vanity.
I too think she was genuinely afraid of losing herself in his love. But at the same time she was wakened by her lust for a charismatic soldier. She would always tease and berate Gabriel coz she thought he was just a farmer with no class.
IN HARDY'S OWN WORDS A THE END: They spoke very little of their mutual feeling; pretty phrases and warm expressions being probably unnecessary between such tried friends. Theirs was that substantial affection which arises (if any arises at all) when the two who are thrown together begin first by knowing the rougher sides of each other's character, and not the best till further on, the romance growing up in the interstices of a mass of hard prosaic reality. This good-fellowship-camaraderie-usually occurring through similarity of pursuits, is unfortunately seldom superadded to love between the sexes, because men and women associate, not in their labours, but in their pleasures merely. Where, however, happy circumstance permits its development, the compounded feeling proves itself to be the only love which is strong as death-that love which many waters cannot quench, nor the floods drown, beside which the passion usually called by the name is evanescent as steam.
This movie literally had me thinking that women can make mistakes too. And being with the wrong people in the past doesn't nullify the truth that we all deserve the right person. If we only just repent and learn from our past mistakes. Gabriel is too good for her, yes. But we all have fallen short of God's grace, who are we to judge?
"This movie literally had me thinking that women can make mistakes too" Derp - if that isn't a telling commentary on the modern world I don't know what is.
i always loved Gabriel's character so much, and also how his last name "Oak" was a testament to his character: strong, steady, grounded. i watched this film about 2 years ago with my mom, and I always wished to find my own Mr. Oak after that..and thankfully, not long after, I did (but I wasn't about to turn him down the first time, hahah) :') the universe seemed to really do me a solid, huh?
@@depresso___espresso oh that's so lovely to hear omg :') and, honestly? ...i noticed very early-on! He pretty much immediately felt like a safe space for me to be myself, and he felt the same with me. His strength was clear, through his actions and character, more than words (although words are great too lol). I've been able to better heal many parts of myself over time with his continuous support. we're now even engaged as of this past sunday :')
While she is super harsh and abrasive towards him I also think this story is realistic in that she grew to love him for more than what he looked like. She tried passion amidst her independence and found that fleeting, then almost chose convenience but she didn’t respect those men, and while they made her feel a certain way , they were shallow. In the end she chooses Gabriel because she grew to see him as more than what he had been. He was real and he respected her beyond her looks or money. He showed her that he loved her not because of shallow things but because he truly believed in her snd valued and respected her strength, he wasn’t afraid of it. I feel like she spent so much of the movie wanting to be something dainty or submissive and settling for what she thought she wanted. In the end she realized what she truly valued in love was the equality and respect that gave gave her. I may be alone I. This but I love the fact that this story is messy because learning to love someone can sometimes be messy.
Gabriel and Bathsheba have one of the most fascinating relationships in literature. When we first meet Bathsheba, it isn't her good qualities we see, but her vanity as she stares into a mirror when she thinks no one is looking. Then Gabriel comes to know her as whimsical, impetuous and courageous when she saves his life. He sees her faults and spends the entire story appealing to the better parts of her nature. He despises her behavior toward Mr. Boldwyn and warns her against Troy. It isn't until she marries Troy and sees what her future looks like with him, that she admits to Gabriel that she married him because Troy played on her insecurities. She's starting to understand that Gabriel expects the best version of her and she's failed him. Her behavior toward Mr. Boldwyn is less understandable. She seems weak, stringing him along, trying to convince herself she is some type of martyr because she played a dumb prank on him one time. It isn't explainable other than her vanity is getting the best of her again. I don't think as the audience we're supposed to feel that Bathsheba deserves Gabriel's devotion. She probably doesn't even deserve his friendship. But that isn't the point, Gabriel thinks she deserves it and in the end she finally accepts that too.
Gergana Margaritova - most often we do ..! And if we don't choose a bad boy also , its just that ...Gabriel kinda guys often goes unnoticed or friend zoned !! ( Though to be fair noone really wait like Gabriel anymore ...No one waits ...Life has become fast , hollow and robotic )
Madhumita Jana You're so right! People keep getting more reticent and insensitive. That's why as a hopeless romantic I've always had a soft spot for characters like Gabriel, Colonel Brandon, William Dobbin - caring and deeply loving men.
I hate to be rude, but i have to admit, the bad boys are the ones to have fun with when you are young. And while we are at it, men like Gabriel are the ones who fly under the radar. And when we come to our senses, there they are waiting patiently. It's the same for both the sexes more or less.
Gabriel was too good for her. He was so respectful. When they wanted to kiss each other but she was married to the other guy, he resisted even though he really wanted to kiss her cause he didn't want her to be a cheater and him a homewrecker. I would give my life for a man like that
When she said at the end “ Wasn’t i your sweetheart? “ i hated her completely. Even after all the years he has been through she says “ you have to love me i don’t care how you were hurt “. Love isn’t about take advantage of someone who loves you. She took so long to realize that he was the one. Not because she realized she loved him but she needed him as a comforter , helper, admirer because other guys took advantage of her. She is no different than other two guys. She doesn’t deserve Gabriel period
She didn't know what she wanted. It took her some experience to know that she truly loved him. She didn't have any other experiences and was just discovering her romantic emotions.
Windy Citiz I think I see where you’re coming from. My experience tells me that MANY women are like this: foolish conceited self-willed ignorant of what actual real love is. But she came to see, understand and responded to his love for her. And his love for her changed her. This is a woman. This is my observation of actual life and experience if ever anyone is so loved by such a man. Unfortunately, this story is so insightful to the character of many you g and foolish women who make foolish choices.
LOVED this book. Don't know why people prefer Pride and Prejudice. I love that this film did the two characters and the growth of their relationship justice.
Gabriel is a dedicated, and forthright man. I am of the opinion that if they have struck it right from the beginning Bathsheba would not have loved and respected Gabriel much. The experience she gained from her relationships led to a soul-searching for her and the realisation that love might not come in the form you have envisaged.
You're exactly right. If you read the book, he sees her faults from the off. She's vain. But she's got spirit, pluck, a big heart and courage. She's immature, but he's' patient. And you know from the book (and this novel does a good job of it), when one wins Bathsheba heart... she's loyal
yeah, their relationship matures from both sides; she matures also and he gets to know her better with good points and flaws so his commitment at the end is truly a more mature one ( after all you don't ask to marry a woman after just having seen her milking the cow and having spent some time on a lawn, do you?)
That's true bc she did like him from the beginning but she wasnt mature enough to be with him yet. However , with that being said I feel like she was manipulative and selfish bc she knew his love was unconditional for her. Sometimes we just have to do what is right ,she knew it all along but she was playing hard to get. Gaining experience is great but look at all the senseless heartache she endured just to end up with the person she knew she loved.
this was one of the the most, my top most heartwarming romance films of all the time. I wish nowadays they could make romance movies as good. I love him too, such gentle gorgeous eyes for such a manly looking, well, man haha.
this was a set book in high school for our Cambridge exams...it shocked me that the other girls found the book to be boring...I on the other hand, was totally enamored by the love story, head over heels in love with Farmer Oak and terribly cross with Bathsheba for not recognising the gem right in front of her eyes.
Goodness, this video just gets better every time I watch it. The music, the editing… it’s better than the movie itself. The music sweeps you into their great romance.
I tried so hard to like her but I just couldn’t. Gabriel is such a gentleman and deserves so much. I felt like she used him as her last option after she had her heart broken and didn’t have anyone else. She was selfish, she used people whenever she wanted and even though I’m always rooting for a happy ending, I don’t believe she was the right one for him at all.
I’ve never seen this movie but if a person as strong and caring and kind asked me out, I would simply say yes immediately. But people like Gabriel are few and far between.
I will give the movie one thing: I liked how they made Oak and Bathsheba's interactions feel more intimate, the hand holding at the ricks, the talk in the storm, the ending where she confronts him about leaving, the dance. Although I wanted Gabriel to 'get the girl' in the novel, I always felt their interactions were a little lukewarm, more like a friendship, which I suppose is the point. I mean, lets be honest Gabriel is effectively sidelined throughout the novel, even though he could be perceived as her primary love interest. At least here I felt like there was some chemistry aside from friendship and loyalty, something more.
Came here after watching it in Walt Disney stream. And the last scene, I can't get enough of the chemistry. So so intense. :) My heart beats fast as i watch Matthias Schoenaerts. :) thank you for this video.

How does he play this role so perfectly ?? Does he share some traits with the character?... his eyes and aura tells so much it’s both vivid and confusing... I have never met an Oak in real life but it would be amazing to do so... wow What lies beneath must be interesting. To figure out what could cause such a personality such a soul to exist would be...
Ikr...how can a man be so chivalrous? he was filled with honor, bravery, loyalty...idk I think you're either born an oak or you aren't. In my opinion these traits are either with you or they aren't. As for Matthias schoenaerts, he always embodies the roles he plays. He's an amazing actor. When Gabriel and Bethsheba first meet she is a very young woman who lost her parents in childhood. I think this loss affected her emotional development. Gabriel is attracted to her beauty and free spirit. He is eight years older than her and sees her immaturity. Like an older brother he watches over her telling her things she needs to hear about herself that no one else could because she had no one. At one point he even tells her he will leave her one day because he knows eventually he will. Along their journey the things that he tells her, though she often does not heed his advice, she realize too late her foolishness. In the process she matures letting go of childish ways, realizes what love is and does not want to lose him by telling him her true feelings.
Brilliant acting & fantastic scenery bring Thomas Hardy's far from the madding crowd to life in beautiful Dorset.oak never gave up on Bathsheba even though he was repeatedly rejected by her.what a wonderful film ,all credit to the director & camera work & of course the actors.
From the beginning she was interested in him but I think that youth, fear, new opportunities made her let go and she chose to do without him. She had little experience, then the officer arrived and dazzled her with his charms. She made the wrong choice but paid for it. Gabriel (proud, firm and loyal) was always there in the background and she had a second chance to choose better. I like both characters.
I had forgotten how much I liked this movie, from years ago when I first saw it. So thank you for uploading and inspiring me to watch it again. I love the actors who portray the two leading characters. They have such depth in their acting, their subtle looks, the emotions. Their performances are quite remarkable. Whoever did the casting, did an excellent job. I love this movie!
I saw this last night. I was hesitant because I really was equally surprised by the Julie Christie/Alan Bates version. But, these two are two of my favorite actors and I've always enjoyed seeing their work. I'm glad I know about them. Need more...
I came to watch this movie just recently, I love adaptations; they never disappoint! Gabriel -Mr. Oak- is added to the list of real men like Mr. Darcy, Mr. Thornton, Mr. Wentworth, Mr. Knightly ... he is a real gentlman whose love is unwavered and his loyalty and devotion are rare. Now many say that 'Wasn't I your first sweetheart' is the utterance that changed his mind, I think what came after 'weren't you mine' is the key; as he heard her saying these words he realized that he matters to her too that's why he carried on and asked if he can love and marry her. His doubts mirrors Mr. Thornton's in 'North and South' as he kept repeating to his mother that he does not think a woman like 'Margaret' would care for him, and she did the same as Bathsheba carred for Gabriel, but fools as we are, we sometimes take unnecessary long time to figure out our emtions! Great work on the video

Thomas Hardy wrote two incredible novels (he wrote many others) that were put to film, Tess of the d'Ubervilles and Far From the Madding Crowd. I love this version of Far from the Madding Crowd and both versions of Tess.
She is independent in a man’s world. In a time when women were not encouraged to be independent. He believes in her and loves her independence. We all can be hard headed and short sighted. He sticks around because he knows she loves him too and because love is always worth it. Period.
I would submit that if the genders were swapped, we would say the relationship was dysfunctional and emotionally abusive. Which it is. She took advantage of his feelings for YEARS and strung him along. That's not love AT ALL.
This was the very first film by Matthias that I watched. Then I went to see Rust and Bone, and then Bullhead.. And I'm like: Oh, crap... not another unattainable actor crush. Screw my life 😭 Nice montage, BlueBell!
This might be my favorite Thomas Hardy novel. I enjoyed this adaptation. The cast was outstanding and the scenery was stunning. I for myself identify with William Boldwood.
Every one of us is like Bathsheba, looking for love and satisfaction in all the wrong places. I somehow can't sympathize with the leading actress. Gabriel's love for her is unconditional, while her affection for him seems opportunistic. Even at the end it seems more like she just wants to be with him because she needs his companionship because she's lonely now and his advice because it was always so helpful to her. Not because she really cares about him
I didn't like her either. I think she got her karma though. Her whole problem or conflict was the fact that she was worried she was going to be used by a man. "for when your thyme it is passed and gone, he'll care no more for you". And that's why I think she refused Oak at first. She thought of herself too independent and not needing a man. Then she really did fall for someone who used her. It's one of the finest ironies in my opinion.
You're of course entitled to your opinion and I can see how you could think that about it, but I think she finally realized what Gabriel meant to her , and not because she was lonely or needed him to help with the farm either. Sometimes people don't realize what they have until they lose it or are about to lose it.
I agree with that point of view. I guess that's the "moral" of the story. But i cannot believe Gabriel means the same to her as she means to him. She does seem to realize his worth at the end yes, but I believe love is more about giving than receiving. If people can't realize what they have until they are about to lose it, they are more concerned about what they can get, which I think is opportunistic. How many times has Gabriel "lost" her to other men? But he never stopped loving her.
Gabriel is a good name for Matthias's character, because he is like an angel watching over Bathesheba and being there for her. Just saying even if one doesn't believe in angels it fits their profile, OK.
As is typical of writing in this genre and time, all of the names have additional meanings. Gabriel Oak is both a saving angel and a steady, reliable force. Boldwood is confident and straightforward, but too old for Bathsheba (thus his name is like bald-wood, or an old tree). Frank Troy is obviously only interested in money, troy being a measurement of weight and wealth. And then there's Bathsheba, the woman named after a Bible character who seduced David, who then conveniently put her husband in harm's way, ensuring that the husband would die and David could marry Bathsheba. I think her name is meant to be ironic, in that she is alluring to several men, but she does not destroy them, though they fight for her.
@@carolannhook554 I agree with the meaning of the names, except that Bathsheba didn't do any seducing. 2 Samuel 11: King David saw her bathing from his rooftop, took her and lay with her, and then when she sent to him telling him she was pregnant, David tried to hide his adultery by calling Uriah back from war in hopes that he'd sleep with his own wife and nobody would know it was David's kid, but when Uriah wouldn't go back home, David had her husband murdered. Now, there's no evidence of her objecting to the situation, and we can presume from the story that maybe she would have gone along with David and not told her husband, but she's a pretty ambivalent character. A better woman would have refused the king, and, best case scenario, been sent home untouched, or worst case, been raped by the king anyway, but it's not like she set out to seduce anyone. I think that's why Hardy's character is named Bathsheba, in that she was involved with a couple of men, and ended up caught in the middle of things by her own lack of character/weakness/ selfishness, but she didn't set out to do harm. Bathsheba in the Bible suffers the loss of a husband - killed because of her, but not by her design -- and loses the son who resulted from the adultery with David, but she also has a happy ending in that she gives birth to Solomon.
@Ayisha S. Good to clarify. Thanks. I was trying to keep the post shorter and couldn't figure out another way without using a word like seduce, but I agree that the word misrepresents her actions. I like your theory on her name. I wonder if the name is to also suggest the idea of the judgement of others (in the madding crowd) who see only her actions and not the delicate complexities of love. Pretty much every love story in the novel is a convoluted, complicated relationship, filled with misunderstandings. I loved the movie, but I feel the portrayal of Troy is simplified too much, making it easier for audiences to hate him rather than see him as a flawed, proud lover.
@@carolannhook554 Yeah, I like your assessment about the complexity of her actions. Have you seen the longer miniseries from the 90s? Nathaniel Parker, Jonathan Firth, and Paloma Baeza? I thought it was a really excellent adaptation, and long enough to deal with the complexity. Troy's character makes more sense: he's weak, but complex, and the situation he got into with Fanny has more backstory. I also think that Bathsheba is more likable -- one understands and respects her decisions more. Nathaniel Parker isn't as handsome as Mattias Schoenaerts, but his rural accent makes more sense, and even though he wasn't how I pictured Oak in the book, he does a good job. Anyway, any time you try to squeeze a novel into a blockbuster-length film, you're going to miss a lot. Not only is it short, but it has a very strict and limited structure that does not allow for subplots. The miniseries structure works a lot better, and is my favourite film structure.
Ladies sighing out here, the good news is there are plenty of Gabriel Oaks out there, just open your eyes: they may not look as sexy as Mathias S. and may not have the cameras highlighting the look in their eyes, but at least they are real, not merely fictional! The problem is even in real life Troys are stealing the show as being more vocal than Oaks and it takes a little more maturity to be able to make the difference between them ( something Bathsheba herself grew over the story :) ).

I too think she was genuinely afraid of losing herself in his love. But at the same time she was wakened by her lust for a charismatic soldier. She would always tease and berate Gabriel coz she thought he was just a farmer with no class.
Very true! Thanks ❤
You are so Spot on
IN HARDY'S OWN WORDS A THE END: They spoke very little of their mutual feeling; pretty phrases and warm expressions being probably unnecessary between such tried friends.
@@rosaliasantos9549 Far from the madding crowd
However, judgment comes to all who have broken the law of God, unless they place their faith in Christ. Important plot point!

Derp - if that isn't a telling commentary on the modern world I don't know what is.
If you want to watch a woman make mistakes for far too many hours for one movie, watch _Gone With the Wind._
My heart broke for Gabriel so many times, including the loss of the sheep.
This sheep scene always gets I feel SOOOO sorry for him
That was his sign to go look for something better. If only we all had a sign.
i always loved Gabriel's character so much, and also how his last name "Oak" was a testament to his character: strong, steady, grounded. i watched this film about 2 years ago with my mom, and I always wished to find my own Mr. Oak after that..and thankfully, not long after, I did (but I wasn't about to turn him down the first time, hahah) :') the universe seemed to really do me a solid, huh?
fanofthings awww that’s actually really sweet❤️ wishing you a blessed life with your Mr. Oak.

What a fine man Gabriel is (sigh) If only there were more men like him ❤
Gergana Margaritova - there are ....We friendzone them mostly !!!
Madhumita Jana Yep, most of the time we're all about the bad boys, aren't we ☺
Gergana Margaritova - most often we do ..!
I would give my life for a man like that
He was too good for her. She didn't deserve him tbh.
completely agree
agree.
She fucking deserve him. I'd be so sad of they were not together. I know this sounds selfish but sometimes people deserve chances.
Terrie Smith on paper (the book) yes. But Carey Mulligan can pull off characters you should hate. She's quite remarkable in how she does that.

Viviana V oh i still need my Darcy 😓
Darcy has a special place in my heart but Gabriel came pretty close. You should check out Tom from Lights Between Oceans. Beautiful book and movie.
Going to watch this just because hes better than Mr Darcy, my ultimate man ever
Mr Darcy is unique. ❤️
I am for Mr Rochester side 😍
Dark Druidess agree. She thought she could do better. She had to Zlearn the hard way what a man REALLY is. I mean , a Good one. Lol

Was so obvious that Grabriel was her true love, since the first minute!!!
Oh Batsheba, what a blind you were!!!! Great song.
The experience she gained from her relationships led to a soul-searching for her and the realisation that love might not come in the form you have envisaged.
yeah, you are right. Actually, Gabriel is some how sensitive and self-abase.
I wouldnt say Gabriel is self-abase...rather I would say he is a humble and unassuming person
Gaining experience is great but look at all the senseless heartache she endured just to end up with the person she knew she loved.
he shouldve gone rhett butler on her "Frankly, my dear, I dont give a damn"

couldn't have said it better my self haha
I fell in love with Gabriel in this movie. OMG! How can anyone be so quiet, so loving and so protective at the same time?
this was a set book in high school for our Cambridge exams...it shocked me that the other girls found the book to be boring...I on the other hand, was totally enamored by the love story, head over heels in love with Farmer Oak and terribly cross with Bathsheba for not recognising the gem right in front of her eyes.
I have to give Bathsheba props, she had the guts to turn down that perfect specimen.
Or stupidity.
Goodness, this video just gets better every time I watch it. The music, the editing… it’s better than the movie itself. The music sweeps you into their great romance.
This Man is Utterly beyond gorgeous to me for some reason and i have seen quite a few of his films🥰
BEST Version by far and when she SINGS~! It's magical :) What a voice.
I literally adore this movie. Excellent performances and especially the most beautiful soundtrack in the history of cinema!
I’ve never seen this movie but if a person as strong and caring and kind asked me out, I would simply say yes immediately. But people like Gabriel are few and far between.
This is beautifully done & captures Gabriel & Bathsheba’s romance in the best way, I love it! 😍
Gabriel is a man of honour....a man of words...hats off to him...

He’s very different from the character but he plays out so well it’s most believable
Aren’t second chances Wonderful !!
I had forgotten how much I liked this movie, from years ago when I first saw it. So thank you for uploading and inspiring me to watch it again. Love this book. Never warmed to Bathsheba though. This trailer is making me want to read the book again. Huge fan of Thomas Hardy.
The most epic kiss in cinematic history. I could watch the ending a thousand times and never get tired of it.
My exact thoughts ..
I can't watch that kiss and NOT lose it. How I long to kiss a woman like that one day!
Most beautiful edit of a most beautiful film! I've watched this a thousand times. Seriously the flow is like a mini movie. xx
I completely agree. Also, thank you for mentioning Mr. Thornton. I’m absolutely in love with him

That man is perfection
Gabriel was 1000 times more handsome, charming and sweet gentleman. I'd marry him in the blink of an eye
I can't remember how many times I watch this movie. It's truly beautiful
Yeah you could also say she learned her lesson to appreciate the goodness in Gabriel by having experienced relationships with bad men
Mathu Art very true.
Gabriel Oak, the greenest flag ever alive in the fictional world when it comes to classic, change my mind.
Gabriel is a good name for Matthias's character, because he is like an angel watching over Bathesheba and being there for her. Just saying even if one doesn't believe in angels it fits their profile, OK.
My Name ist Gabriele and i'm a woman 🙋
One of the best intriging movie, a true love story.
She honestly don’t deserve him
Ladies sighing out here, the good news is there are plenty of Gabriel Oaks out there, just open your eyes: they may not look as sexy as Mathias S. and may not have the cameras highlighting the look in their eyes, but at least they are real, not merely fictional! The problem is even in real life Troys are stealing the show as being more vocal than Oaks and it takes a little more maturity to be able to make the difference between them ( something Bathsheba herself grew over the story :) ).
Irina Firuti very very true
