But my hairdresser asked how often I shampoo, and I said every other day. I just didn't want her to think I didn't have good hygiene. A few years ago I learned about co-washing, so I do that sometimes. I often watch hair care and styling videos made by women of colour, mainly because I love seeing all the beautiful hairstyles, but I've gotten some really good tips for my own hair that way.

    Curly hair whether white or black is naturally dryer than straighter hair so yeah the straight hair that isn't dry as soon looks sort greasy and clogs the pores and roots which can cause easy more problems but curly hair sucked up those oils

    • @kutie216
      @kutie216 5 лет назад +19

      Brittney Grimes Yeah it's because curly hair is naturally more coarse and it's harder for the oils to travel down the hair shaft. Even with my long, smooth, & decently straight hair I struggle with getting hair oils to the ends of my hair!

      Thats actually false. Both types can be just as dry after shampooing. The main difference is straight hair wont become frizzy but dry curly hair will have a disturbed curl pattern basically every hair is pointing to a different direction = frizz. Curly hair is not as oily is becausr its thick absorbs more. Oil doesnt travel on its own without brushing

I used to think natural hair was a breeze, but you have to nurture and pamper your hair MORE than any other hair type. But when you take good care of your hair, she will be happy and she will look out for you because your hair will be so beautiful and popping you won't even feel the need to wear weaves.

    • @QueenFlareMay

      My hair does the exact opposite lol. I have to go months in order for it to be fairly normal and washes well afterwards. I only ever lose a little amount of hair unlike washing it weekly or daily where I actually lost more hair and it acted up worse. So I guess to whatever our hair really needs, we do. So if I got to wear weave, I got to do what is best for my hair.

    My daughter has 4c hair and it's super long. I found that washing her hair every 3 to 4 weeks works best, because her hair is so dry and loves to get tangled. I add very little product (just a little coconut oil) to avoid build up which keeps me from over manipulating it. I get it straightened it every 3 months so she can get a trim and take all the knots out. I doubt her hair would be as long and healthy as it is (especially for fragile 4c hair), if I tried to wash it more often. Figure out what your hair needs and just do right by it.

      That's true. I'm white, and my hair type's 3b (I've heard it's a Celtic thing, but I don't know for sure). The Sodium Laureth Sulfate in most shampoos is really not good for even European curly hair, but the challenge is finding shampoos that don't have it. I've essentially given up on finding one, since the cheap brand I use isn't destroying my hair and I have a good routine down that makes up for any potential damage (like rinsing with cold water, and using a little leave-in moisturiser). I wouldn't wash my hair with some strange hotel shampoo for any amount of money.

    the longer you go without washing your hair the less oil your scalp your hair will produce because it starts to realize it has enough

    You’re hair adapts to your routine. If you wash daily, hair will over oil and needs refreshing. Honestly I think even tighter curly hair types could benefit from more frequent washing since it really helps with growth. For me my hair grows faster when I wash it more often. But only like every 2-3 days dependent on product use and styles. And utilizing co washes and discretion. If hair needs it and it’s only been two days, I’ll do it. I’ve noticed quicker growth than the once a week. I specifically think this has a lot to do with stimulating roots and opening up pores from clogging conditioners and stylers.

      @@anon2218 Oh yes we can. I have straight up afro hair to my shoulders and I shampoo and condition every 2-3 days. It's more about hygiene. We don't leave our face and bodies dirty just because soap and water might dry it out. We handle accordingly by picking moisturizing cleansers and using lotions. So why do that to the scalp? We are the only people ok with walking around with soiled heads.

    Lifestyle also affects how often you wash your hair. I work in a dental clinic, and even though we wear haircaps on work, the caps arent plastic, liquid, such as saliva can still go to the hair. Basically, youll have dirty hair at the end of the day. I wash my hair every other day because i didnt want to dry it out so much. But I cant imagine going for a whole week of not washing my hair, it will smell gross and would actually start giving me acne because its dirty.

    I am a middle European, with pin straight & fine hair, I only wash my hair once a week, my hair also matts like crazy when I wet it so hair washing & drying is also a 2-3h process for me. I feel like in general the beauty industry has a one fits all approach which doesn’t work for so many people. So I am rly happy that it seem to become inclusive for all of us :)

    I don't cleanse/wash my type 4 hour often but I shower rinse my hair or use rice water or tea rinses weekly. Or each time I come in from the outside. I massage my scalp while wetting my hair in the shower and then shirt dry. And spritz ACV or Rice Water, and then leave until next time or do a hair mask or oil treatment as necessary.

  • @TriceMDona

    Every week, I used to lather my Sisterlocks 2-3 times with clarifying shampoo before following up with a moisturizing shampoo and it made my scalp very tender and hair dry. (I have 4b/4c hair.) Now, I just clarify once, do the moisturizing shampoo, and deep conditioner.
    If I add a hot coconut oil treatment after shampooing, I won't need to wash my hair for 3-4 weeks.
    It all depends on what the hair and scalp needs.

    Once a week, leave in for the hair, and lots of pomade on the scalp works for me. 2 weeks is okay. More than that is just, I've tried it and I just..ugh. the dandruff, the knots. Unless my hair is in a protective style, where I can easily moisturize my scalp, and allow air to weave through it, weekly wash days are a must

    I have learned that washing my hair too often and using different chemicals in it for coloring or styling was ruining my hair. I stopped coloring, stopped styling products except for some hairspray and wash my hair once every three weeks. Also, I never use a brush anymore, just a wide toothed comb. I have no problem telling anyone that when they ask me what do I do that has changed my hair so significantly. I use Dr. Bronner's liquid soap for my hair and skin. Nothing else. My hair has stopped falling out and looks great. I am so happy with it. BTW, you gals all have absolutely gorgeous hair!!!

    I see how regular shampoo would not work for you, regular shampoo is drying, but because it’s stripping the grease and oils and dead skin, that’s part of the process of cleaning, washing with conditioner does nothing, cleaning-wise, how do you clean your scalp? Because even if your hair is dry because the oils in your head can’t travel down because of the curls, you still have the oils in your scalp, or you do not produce as much? I’m curious because my scalp can barely hold 18h without being soaked on oils

    It depends on the style, sometimes I’ll wash twice a week, sometimes once every two weeks, sometimes once a month or even longer. You don’t have to wash your hair a lot to maintain its health. My 4A hair is doing great it’s down to my waist and I get it that way by leaving it alone. I’ve gone 3 months without washing my hair and if you take care of it and moisturize your scalp and keep it out of extra dirty situations it won’t stink and it will grow and maintain its health. I never understood the stigma around “needing” to wash your hair often.

    I remember my mom washed my hair once a month or so. I have thin strands so I could only go without a relaxer for 2-3 months before I went natural in college. Now I wash when I feel my scalp is dirty so every 2 - 2.5 weeks, or 3 if I wash with conditioner on week 2.

      I have a gut feeling they declined to answer on camera. Many 4b/4c individuals go as long as 4-6weeks between washes and their hair does just fine. Some who work out a ton will rinse their hair thoroughly with plain water in between full wash days, especially if they have braids in.

    Any Suggestions?
    Look, I have THICK long straight hair (I'm Mexican Btw) It's so coarse I've broken hair ties just trying to put it in a ponytail. I don't know what I need anymore. My scalp is so flaky and red at times. There are times I'll try to remove dandruff on my scalp which can be a big piece and it's a small open sore. I would alternate washes (one day yes & one day no). I tried a medicated shampoo from the doctor. I have tried spraying diluted apple cider on my scalp and letting it sit before I shower. I tried shampoo scrub and the shampoos I use aren't harmful. I buy them at either salon-centric or CosmoProf. I went to a hairstylist to do a scalp treatment. She suggested two do 2 washes a week. One on Saturday and the other on Wednesday. She also said to use a hydrating shampoo. So when I do wash my hair it keeps the scalp hydrated. I still get dry scalp/ dandruff. It's not as bad but I feel like I need moister on my scalp. I want to be careful if I add oil to my scalp, I have straight hair and it'll look greasy. What am I doing wrong?

    • @Ισαβέλα-ψ7τ
      @Ισαβέλα-ψ7τ 2 года назад

      i don’t think you should add oil to a scalp with sores as that could potentially worsen things. Maybe you should consider using a better shampoo. what type of shampoo do you use? You seem to have a sensitive scalp, so I would suggest using a SULFATE FREE shampoo..also avoid adding conditioner to your scalp. make sure you put conditioner on the ends of your hair and to your hair shaft but NEVER to your SCALP.
      Do you know when this all started or were you just born with it? It could be possible that you have scalp psoriasis or scalp dermatitis

    No mention of marketing! The main reason that all these hair care companies encourage you to wash your hair every day or every other day is simply money! No one actually it really needs to wash her hair every day. But of course companies want you to keep buying the products.
