  • Do you rinse your roots every morning or shampoo once a week? On this week’s episode of #TheGlowUp, Beauty Director Jenny Jin asks the age old question: How often should we really be washing our hair? To set the record straight, Jin checks in with celeb hairstylist and Co-Founder of Act and Acre, Helen Reavey, who uses a microscopic camera to inspect our scalps (and the results are alarming). Watch as Reavey probes our strands, demystifies hair oil and yes, tells us exactly how often we should lather up.

    It’s a myth that washing hair everyday is bad. It’s different for everyone, we all have different hair types. For some ppl, it’s bad to wash everyday. For others, it’s perfectly healthy to do so. For me, I’ve washed my hair everyday since I was a toddler and it is silky, shiny, and soft with no frizzyness or split ends.

      Preach. I wash my hair every other day bc I have genetic issues w oiliness (as does every other woman in my extended family), and if I ever mention it, everyone w naturally normal or dry hair will immediately hone in on me to tell me my hair is oily bc of how frequently I wash it, and that I should only wash it like once or twice a week. If you’ve never had naturally oily hair you have no clue how to deal w it. I’ve tried going longer stretches between washes and I developed seborrhea, my derm told me I had to go back to washing it every other day.

    I have oily skin type and my hair is naturally straight. I used to wash my hair every day but not even half way through the day my hair would get super greasy and oily. So one day I decided to not wash my hair for a month so I could teach my scalp to not produce so much oil. So true. I am one of those people that can not wash my hair everyday because I have dry scalp and curly hair. I have a medicated shampoo that my dermatologist prescribed me. To keep as clean as possible I try to do what women used to do back in the day: I keep it in an updo and wear hats and scarves. If I wear my hair down I have to wash it a lot and my scalp turns into a burning, dry, red mess. Keeping my hair protects it from the discusting polution and tobacco and dust in the air. I also sleep with a vintage inspired bonet. So my advice to people with dry scalp and hair that can not wash their hair every day is try to keep it protected and away from the face. If your scalp does not produce enough oil to make the scalp dirty, protect the rest of tour hair from actual dirt and polution.

    It grinds my gears how many people on the Internet are patronising about people washing their hair “too much” which makes it oily and claiming everyone can train their hair to last longer between washes. I’ve been trying to train my hair to last three days for the past ten years and it just isn’t happening (can barely last two days). Genetics has way more to do with oil production than wash frequency. Also I don’t think a lot of this crowd realise that their hair actually smells pretty funky from their precious ‘natural oils’. This video has finally validated me that actually maybe my hair does need a daily wash after all.

    • @futureivygirl
      @futureivygirl 2 года назад +36

      The funky comment was a little to far but besties that I totally agree. It has to do with genetics and your hair type. Most African Americans wash their hair once a week, while some eh white people tend to wash theirs daily. It’s all about you, in fact I think the people who created the rice water thing (I forgot what nationality they are) only wash their hair once a month and they don’t even use soap or shampoo yet their hair is beautiful

    • @madinp1177
      @madinp1177 2 года назад +51

      @@futureivygirl I’m 100% talking about other white women though.
      Black and other women of colour (and men ofc) absolutely do not need to wash their hair that often.
      I will NEVER comment on their wash frequency because I am lily white and have no idea the effort that goes into maintaining the texture that they are born with. They know what works best for their hair. All power to them for washing their hair less frequently and preserving the health of their waves/curls/kinks/whatever.
      Again, my comment was not racially charged. I am talking about other WHITE WOMEN. White women with fine, naturally straight hair deciding they need to wash their hair at the same interval as black women…….???? Because they’ve decided they have ”trained it”? They are deluding themselves a lot of the time because it really smells and looks bad dude. (They produce way more oil than someone with curly hair would so it catches up to them way quicker than it would to a POC with textured hair).
      Yet they patronise me for washing mine “too often” even though I’ve been naively trying to “train” my hair for years and it simply hasn’t worked. These same white women will literally have hair that smells dirty to me, despite social distancing, even if it looks OK from all the dry shampoo they use. I notice that all of the black or mixed women I’ve discussed this with IRL don’t actually give me the same advice because they know that they have very different genes to deal with and what will work for them will not work for me lol

My mom is the same way. I have very thin, fine hair that's delicate. I can't even use a brush to comb, I can only use a pick/thin comb because if I don't, my hair gets ripped out. As such my scalp gets very greasy easily and I develop bad dandruff quickly if I skip a day. We're white. But I've known other white people that can go a week or 4 days without washing their hair and they can be fine. Genetics can be different for everyone.

    It really depends on whether you have oily or dry scalp type and where you're living. I tried to wash my hair once a week for a long period of time. Just to see if it can change the amount of oil my head produces. And it only causes my hair more greasy, more hair loss and really itchy! Then I returned back to wash my hair every two days. My hair always starting to look oily on the third day if I didn't wash my hair the night before. I have combination skin type and live in subtropical area.
    And the water matters too. I use soft water in Taipei, which is where I'm living. My hair is always shiny and healthy. But once I went to Australia or Spain, where uses hard water. It always makes my hair became really dry and hair loss.

      @@mattkavelli hard water has a lot of minerals, those minerals will basically grab the oil and stay there which is why most ppl in hard water areas have more build up and need to wash it twice to make sure the shampoo actually removes the oils. I can’t use dry shampoo bc even after washing it 2 times, the dry shampoo just again binds to everything and it creates a greasy film over my hair. Hard water is great to drink but horrible for everything else.

My hair tends to get very frizzy after using them. But the ones available here in my country gives my naturally straight hair more volume. When I went to colder countries, my hair becomes frizzy and my scalp becomes dry too, regardless if I wash it everyday. I live in a tropical country, so washing everyday is normal for us, since it's hot 😁

The smell evaporates reasonably well. Every time you wash , for a month. Wha la ! No more dandruff. So because everyone is different just modify this to your own needs. I hope it works as well for you as it did for me. Once or twice a year for maintenance. I think it can be fungal. Maybe from sugar or antibiotics? Who knows.

    The oil makes sense!! I've seen a video (Ted-Ed dandruff) about how dandruff is created by these microbacteria that feeds on our natural oils (they poop out dandruff and it builds up). Since the oil is being eaten the scalp creates more oil and the bacteria keeps eating it.
    Adding oil that the bacteria can't eat not only stops them from creating that buildup but also allows the scalp to slow down oil production - which lessens the bacteria in the first place.

    then i was told for dandruff it means dry scalp, so i should stop washing hair everyday- instead i shud do it 2 to 3x a week.
    but this resulted so bad to me. my Seborrheic got worst- resulted to a lot of hair fall and hair thinning, scalp full of large flakes and its red due to me picking it out.
    i went to a doctor- told me i should be washing hair everyday because Seborrheic clogs the scalp and not washing it makes it worst- and yeah. she gave my medical shampoo treatments.
    now my scalp is better ♡ i see a lot of baby hair too ♡ and theyre all standing tbh haha! my hair got better ♡ though still thin. but im exploring on how to thicken the hair ♡

That's a lot of product waste and a lot of money). Not to mention before I was using just shampoo and conditioner, no styling, and CGM users vary but one woman used leave-ins, stylers, creams, oils, and gel. I had previously tried going "no-poo" so I decided to experiment and adapt my own and see what worked. (I've tried shampooing twice before, as well, and my hair felt worse: dry, stripped, and straw-like.) I switched to a shampoo without sulfates and a conditioner without silicones, but, what really seemed to improve the health of my hair more than anything was washing it less. Yes, it was disgusting and greasy, at first, but slowly it adapts and your oil production slows. I still only use shampoo (once) and conditioner, but I wash my hair less and less. Once I got past the greasy phase, my hair is softer, shinier, less frizzy, more moisturized, curlier, AND tangles less. It feels amazing, and contrary to popular belief, does not smell bad at all when I haven't washed it for a while, people can't even tell.

    I wash it every 2-3 days. I only shower when I need to wash my hair or am actually sweaty/dirty. Because of my age (teen), it gets greasy in a couple of days.

      Try using dry shampoo... And wash hair alternately... Or twice a week. 😊

      Or the cornstarch baby powder. I stopped dry shampoo because it built up on my scalp and I hated throwing away the cans. Dry shampoo allowed me to extend more time between washes though.

    It depends on your scalp, hair, lifestyle, products, climate etc. For me the optimum seems to be about 2-3 days. It depends on what I've been doing. If I wash it every day, my scalp gets itchy and I have a bad hair day.

    Hallelujah!! ‘THIS’ is exactly what I’ve been saying all my life - it’s about washing my scalp, not necessarily my hair. My face is oily and I wouldn’t wash it once a week, so why would I my hair? My skin is oily and my skin doesn’t stop at the hairline - it continues over my scalp too so I wash my face twice a day and my scalp once a day. It makes me laugh to see people’s faces when I say I wash my hair daily, as if I’ve just said I wash my hair in dog poo!! 🤣 We’re not all the same and oily hair isn’t always about over washing, it’s a genetic hormonal issue for some. Fine straight hair, like mine, produces more oil and the oil slips down the silky hair more easily than someone with curly hair or thicker hair - their oil stays at the top of their head. Lord knows I’ve tried to wash once a week for nearly a year and I just ended up being miserable, had gross hair and scalp acne. I’ve washed mine daily since I was 20 - I’m now 62 and have shiny healthy hair and scalp too. I use natural shampoo with no silicones, parabens, chemicals or oils, I don’t use conditioner as makes my hair flat but do condition once a week, I use no hair products except rarely aloe-vera gel, I let my hair air dry but the occasions I need to dry it quick I use the cold setting only on my dryer.
    Your hair and scalp is personal to you, and what works for each of us is individual.
    Thank you for this - I’m saving this video to show those who scathe at us daily hair washers 🤗❤️

      This is exactly me. I wash it 2 times sometimes bc i also turn alot in my sleep and that friction causes my hair to be greasy when i wake up sometimes, i tried to train my hair for a year by washing it 2 times a week and i got so much scalp acne. My scalp doesn’t get irritated if i wash it 1/2 times a day so it indicates to me that I actually need it. My hair has always been healthy (to the point hair dressers where confused as to why my hair is so healthy even though i used to straighten/blow dry it) and like you said, I started using natural soaps and my hair looks way better. I hate the ppl who swear on hair training bc they forget not everyone has an oily scalp bc of overwashing it. They literally argue to the grave with you telling you how “bad and dry your scalp must be” LMAO

      Also i do realize my hair also might be greasy bc of hard water and build up seeing as at home i have to wash it everyday but on vacation in places that have soft water i can skip a day washing and it looks fine. Though i love my natural shampoos but a clarifying shampoo once a week is needed to remove all the gunk that the minerals held onto on my scalp

    I didn't realize that we should be caring for our scalp the way we care for our face. I wash my hair 2 maybe 3 times a week with a lot of dry shampoo in between because I have super oily hair.

    • @traceej4685
      @traceej4685 4 года назад +3

      Gina Galderio it depends on your hair type and hair porosity. For instance since I’m biracial I can only wash my once a week. Any more than that then my hair would break. My hair retains and releases moisture at different rates. I also stay away from shampoo and conditions with no sulfates or parabens and I don’t use hairsprays or other style products that can leave residue or buildup. Once you learn more about you hair you can know how to care for it properly.

    My hairdresser told me the “wash your scalp” years ago. The rest will get clean with the residual, and not strip your hair. I only wash once a week. However, I don’t use product for styling at all, so that may be a big difference.
    But this just seems like a big commercial, so……

    i have fine, medium density, 3A/3B hair & i wash my hair once a week. the only problem i have is that i get buildup really easily but whenever i use a clarifying, sulfate shampoo it leaves my scalp irritated and itchy but doesn’t remove the buildup on my hair. (T ^ T) i think i just need to get a better shampoo 🥲 i was using the Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus shampoo & then their Raw Shea Butter shampoo & lemme tell you… my hair did NOT like those. so now im trying to find new ones
