      @@marcosdheleno Exactly. You can also be fast, while sneaking. On my second playthrough I managed several S-Ranks just by sneaking and keeping on the move, without really trying. It's really not that hard, if you're careful with your route and keep moving silently.

      ***** Making a Nuke on its own is not enough to earn you enough Demon points to be covered in blood. I've made a Nuke, I know. You get -30,000 Heroism which adds a certain amount to your Demon points which will earn you a big 'ol horn. Continue to add more Demon points and eventually you'll reach Demon Snake status and be covered in blood. But if you earn more Heroism points the horn will very slowly shrink over time.
      I think I was at 74% when my Nuke had developed and was around the 98% mark when my horn had finally returned to normal. I was getting worried it would stay like that permanently. Also to note that dismantling the Nuke will not undo Big Boss'....horniness...

    I think if TPP had survival mechanics like in Snake Eater, animals would actually be more useful. Cooking goats and scorpions at Mother Base and then taking their sliced meats with you on-the-go for lunch breaks would have been cooler.

    • @ohigold
      @ohigold 8 лет назад +151

      I think that might have been an intention, perhaps having an item that cooks animals that you take with you (mini camp fire?). It would explain Snake magically having a lethal pistol and knife in cutscenes which he never uses in gameplay, this could have worked with the resource collected (skins and meat) and added to snake making Afghanistan and Africa war torn via the destroyed environment.

    • @Phantom-kc9ly
      @Phantom-kc9ly 7 лет назад +188

      Nanda surviving doesn't matter when you can call in a helicopter extraction wherever and whenever you want. It only worked in 3 because of the no support and wilderness setting.

    • @mijinx3978
      @mijinx3978 5 лет назад +54

      My idea of using the animals was if you have some saved to MB, they can be used to feed the soldiers on MB instead of having rations. This can result in higher morale, in turn the soldiers develop items faster, collect gmp and resources faster, soldiers recover quicker in the sick bay, soldiers will be able to defend MB better in multiplayer and making the infiltrating player face a bigger challenge. Also with the raised morale your heroism increases too, in turn, getting recruiting better soldiers.
      Your's is pretty good too. While mine is more aimed toward the use of animals affecting how the base functions and indirectly the player, yours is aimed for the player to be affected directly. So it can work either way

    I think I can see what Kojima means, he doesn't mean it in a Mass Effect sort of way. The story ends with the revelation that you really are Big Boss. The avatar, is something you create in your own image quite likely, the name on the back of the photo is your name and the date of birth in the passport is your birthday.
    You get this revelation and the story stops, but you can create your own story. Do you continue to grow Mother Base? Do you aim to become the most powerful PF by ranking at number 1 in the leader boards? Do you protect the world and disarm nukes or do you go on to become a villian and build nukes? Do you recruit Quiet again? Do you continue espionage in Africa and Afghanistan? What is the legacy you create?
    I remember the shocking thing about Ground Zeroes is seeing all your work from Peace Walker being crushed, motherbase is destroyed as seen in the very first trailers. What legacy of Big Boss as played by you is destroyed in Metal Gear? Does Metal Gear become a game about Solid Snake taking down the leader of the largest PF? A nuclear villian? Or is it like MGS3 and Metal Gear is about Solid Snake being manipulated into killing a hero
    I know it sounds weird, but Japanese game developers have tried all sorts of weird things before in games and I think this is his thing that he's trying to do for us.
    It's different, and it would be unfair to treat it like The Walking Dead or Fallout, it's not that kind of make your own story but about who you become as a player, which is actually what MMOs do. In classic World of Warcraft, some players would be known as a fearsome gladiator in battlegrounds or guilds might be famous as being the first to vanquish the most powerful foes. Players in that game would actually become legends on their server through their actions and not through choices they make in cutscenes.

      Incomplete maps. Incomplete story. Removed dialogue which was found by data miners.
      Removed playable Battle gear for the sake of "balance" and yet keeps stuff like infinite ammo bandana and stealth camo.
      Guards have no attack dogs (But both MGS3 and Portable ops did).
      The game has waterfalls but no places to swim in order to save time on creating swiming mechanics and animations.(MGS2, 3, and 4 had swimming mechanics)
      You can carry a fuckload of ammo and several grenade types but only 1 suppressor.
      Only 1 boss fight, Sahelanthropus. (Volgin doesn't count since he can be defeated with 1 hit using either the water tower or pushing him into the water with your car or off the cliff etc)
      The only game in the series which doesn't even have a final boss, but instead has you repeating the first tutorial level.
      The only way you can interact with your soldiers is by attacking them. You can't even salute them back.
      Motherbase is just another mostly barren map with only 2 doors you can enter (the fake room with Paz and the Battle Gear hangar)
      Plot holes such as how Venom even has the same voice as Big Boss.

      the delivery point hingy is BULLSHIT and it only gets mentioned in a FUCKING LOADING SCREEN, i didnt even knew how those thing looked like until i was walking around with a box in mother base and casually stopped at the yellow metal floor thingy and the promt popped up... The helicopter thingy where you look serious, at the face of the protagonist, have a general view of the field... IT DOES LOOK cool and all yes, but shit it gets old after 10 missions (let alone if you play side ops) they force you trough it by saying "look trough your binoculars to get intel" but its a lie, like 90% of the time you wont get ANYTHING useful from looking trough the binocs while in the chopper because it wont mark enemies, they are either too far or you fly by so fast it wont mark them, if the game had an option to skip that dreaded thing which is to my opinion just a stretch of the loading screen i would bother to do all the S rank missions (i even compelte the darn game up top 90%, missed some animals and whatnot but got all the side ops, delivery points, etc, cuz i played trough the whole MGS saga which i never played and liked just to have a solid opinion on it) After playing this game, i can safely assume that MGS4 its better than this, and the MGS5 demo its the step up from 4, the way they handled open world, and the repetitive chopper thingy was awful, not being able to develop all the stuff or AT LEAST reach lvl 50 for the achivement on all teams of your mother base without extending the total playtime of your game or playing online is DOWNRIGHT unfair, and the fact that the lvl goes beyond lvl 50 to upgrade some crap is beyond me, i tought lvl 50 was the max because the achivement told you to get there, surprise for me i see a video where someone has I+D lvl 121 and like 250 people in the team and i was like wot

It doesn't connect well with the themes of the game, but it does fit the themes of MGS3 which makes me feel, like Diamond Dogs as a whole, the themes were just a farce, everything was a farce, and that reveal is cool, but it needed a third chapter to explore the new themes it they at the player.

In gz for some missions you had to look up a tutorial to know where to go, what to do, and when, whereas here you can actually just play well and not be perfect to get the S. Being able to get an S on first try is optimal, and I never got above A on gz without looking up a tutorial. It may be a little too easy, but it's better than requiring the player to speedrun through a specific path without utilizing the depth of the gameplay.

    I finally hit 100% just a few hours ago (16d 2h 35m total time played according to Xbox gamehub) and for the most part I completely agree. The optional tasks (except eavesdropping) are brilliant but the side ops were a massive chore. I was going for S ranks on my first run of each mission and was able to get most of them without much trouble at all. You don't need to rush nearly as much as you suggest. Most of the missions are easily S ranked with a simple 'Perfect Stealth, No Kills' run that's reasonably swift. In fact there was a few times where I was sure I was too slow for an S but still got it, though the game has been patched significantly since this video. Honestly the most trouble I had with S ranking missions was the fact that cutscenes that happen during a mission actually still tick away at the mission's elapsed time (I got a B in my first run of mission 46 despite 100% accuracy and 0 hits taken because of the cutscenes). Conservation wasn't too bad though, I actually found a Leopard Tortoise completely by accident before I was even attempting to extract one of each animal. The long eared hedgehog was a fucking bitch though. I doubt Kaz is happy that I probably spent a few million GMP just deploying over and over again at the same place hoping the RNG gods would be kind...

Things like radar, generators, and comms seem to remain persistent (comms/generators will remain destroyed for a few in-game days, radars remain permanently destroyed), but that's not really a whole lot of "change". Guard patrols are almost always the EXACT same no matter how many times you go back to one specific place.
      Like, that supply depot in Afghanistan. No matter how many times I go back there, it feels like the guards are all in the same exact positions, moving on the same exact routes as they were when I was last there 8 missions ago. Oh, this time it's night, and some guys have night vision. Still not a whole lot of change. I will hand it to the game and say that the "counters" that guards start doing are actually pretty cool. At first I thought it was just stuff like armor, night vision, and helmets. But it goes further than that, straight down to tactics. I commonly distracted guards with magazines or knocks, now every time I distract with a noise, whatever guard is in earshot asks for backup to investigate it. That's cool.
      What's NOT cool is after the 50th time of going through this one base's unlocked back door, they never bother locking it or blocking it off entirely.
      EDIT
      Also, a bit related: ever since MGS1, knocking out a guard is just a temporary measure. Eventually they wake up. In MGS2 they introduced tranquilizers on top of punching or choking an enemy, and the tranqs last longer than just a simple stun. However, they also added the ability to hold up guards. You could hold up a guard and interrogate them (they would usually shake items off of their bodies), then knock them out or kill them. If you did not keep your gun trained on them, they would slowly turn around and reach for their sidearm to shoot you. In MGS5, this system was EXTREMELY dumbed down. You can hold up guards and interrogate them. Some guards will attempt to turn around and shoot you but this is very obvious: the option to interrogate just won't show up when you first hold them up. At that point you know immediately to throat punch them into submission.
      But on other enemies, it doesn't matter if you take your weapon off of them or not. You can point it once, tell them to get down, then walk away. They'll just lay there forever with their hands on their head. They won't try to reach for a weapon, they won't try to get away, they won't try to yell for help. You can fuck off to the other side of the base, and they'll still lay there. The only way they'll come out of that state is if a buddy happens across them. This is stupid. It almost COMPLETELY BREAKS THE GAME. There's an interesting mechanic with tranquilizers in MGS5, where the higher the stopping power of the tranq gun, the faster (and longer) acting the tranquilizing effect. Like I said, eventually enemies wake up from a tranq dart. The higher-end tranq weapons leave them out for a lot longer.
      But what's the point of ANY of those better weapons if you can just tell some guy to get down then walk away and he'll be incapacitated FOREVER?

    • @spartan456
      @spartan456 6 лет назад +7

      @Eli Kirkeeng It's broken because if you choose not to Fulton them, they're just laying there. They won't move an inch, they won't try to retaliate after a minute or two. In previous games, if you left guards alone after a hold up and you walked away, they would eventually notice you're not hanging around and they'll radio for backup. Not the case with holdups in MGS5. My point is to demonstrate how much of a difference there is in guard behavior between 5 and the rest of the series, and how that difference plays into the R&D in 5. Tier 1 of the tranq pistol will leave a guy knocked out for maybe 3 minutes while tier 20,000 or whatever will basically keep them down forever. But it'll take weeks to get that tier researched, and it'll cost you hundreds of thousands of GMP just to deploy with that more powerful tranq pistol.
      What's the point of those more powerful tranqs if you can just hold a guy up and he won't ever attempt to retaliate? Fultoning still costs resources, and has a higher potential to alert nearby guards if they hear the balloon. But a hold up with a water pistol is basically free, and 99.9% of the time, it's silent and nobody will see it if you do it right. And you never have to worry about them radioing for backup. Fultoning is just another method of removing an enemy from the field without killing them. Obviously if they're literally no longer in the field, you don't need to worry about them anymore. But it still costs resources, can potentially alert the enemy, and you have a limited use on them. Hold ups are infinite.
      That's why it's broken. Holding up guards is the ultimate way to neutralize an enemy without killing them because there are absolutely no negatives to doing it. If they would eventually get up when they see you're not there anymore, I'd have a different opinion of it. A holdup is more effective than a Fulton because it's free and has unlimited use. A holdup is more effective than a CQC KO because with a KO, they'll wake up eventually and radio for backup. A holdup is more effective than a tranquilizer because they will also eventually wake up and radio for backup. A holdup non-lethally neutralizes ANY enemy in the game, permanently, at absolutely no cost to you, with minimal risk of alerting nearby enemies, and has an infinite supply of how often you can do it.
      On another note, in the other games, if you held up a guard, sometimes they'd say "you won't do it". If you threaten to shoot them by shooting and missing they'll submit to you. But if you bluff them into a holdup with an empty weapon, they'll know you have no ammo when you try to shoot and nothing happens.
      Compared to 5, where you can force a guard onto the ground with a water pistol, shoot him with the water pistol, and he still won't do anything.

      @@spartan456 I always played it straight, as if they would get up if I took too long. I would always fulton or execute them. I'm disappointed that they actually don't get up after telling them to get on the ground. I wish Konami would fix this in their one update a year. I have already played through the whole game once using the incorrect methods, and a currently 2nd separate time at 35%, but if I play through more I will have to make the decision to use the exploit or continue using the less cost efficient and less strategic route. I'm not sure what I will do. It will be as if I'm cheating if I use the exploit.

I wasted hours trying to get those to work. Prisoners kept glitching and falling down, guards refused to show up. And then, in the rare occasions everyone was where they'd need to be, for some reason they'd be alerted to my presence.
      That said, in the majority of the missions are actually really fun to play and replay, since it gives the lateral-thinking problems that Ground Zeroes did with it's side-op missions. I rarely just blitzed through for an S-Rank (though I'm kind of kicking myself a bit for that now). I'd find shortcuts and plot paths that allowed me to get past guards without having to use Reflex Mode at all. Ended up getting the Foxhound rank several times and that always made me feel good.

    MGSV is so good, it literally revolutionized how every 3rd person game should play.
    The movement is so smooth and fitting. It is fast enough that it doesn't feel like you're dragging his body, but slow enough for it to be realistic (instead of just him moving 360 without really moving his legs). The crouch to prone, prone to standing, prone to crouch etc. is also so smooth. Older MGS, will have you going from crouch-stop-prone and vice versa.
    I will also just say this. For all the people who had 100% this game, just look at how many those people have done it. I will say this first, that they are not really the people who'd enjoy doing a 100% run on any other game. The reason that they had, is that it is just too easy to 100% this game.
    In other games, you'd have to literally start from the beginning if you want to 100%, and you missed something. In this game however, you can just restart to the ACC, then retry from there.
    Last 2 things, the people who say that this game is too easy / too fast to complete are probably the ones who spam sneaking suit, with reflex on, and spamming either a tranq sniper, or a penetration sniper.
    I've played this game countless times (as well as MGS 2-3-4), and I have to say, there are TONS of things to do in the game if you want to.
    First thing to do, is to try and do the missions without killing. Then CQC only. Then no using of sneaking suit. No using of magazine / distractions. *NO TRACE* . Then try to kill every guard. Not use quiet / d-dog. etc.
    And lastly, the story isn't shit. It takes a special kind of stupid to say that, just because "quiet died". Boo hoo, story is shit because your fap material died, alexa play despacito 2.
    On the contray, story *WOULD* be shit if she didn't die. That would be because, you'd have to ask why Quiet didn't appear in Metal Gear.
    It's pretty clear that the story is great, just that it didn't have a proper ending due to Konami's bullshit.
    Just tell me how the story could be shit, when it has you killing your own soldiers because of the virus. A hallucination of Paz. Volgin as man of fire, and redhead mantis. Young Liquid, and quiet leaving etc.
    Mind you, the game is fucking titled "phantom pain", not "Metal Gear Solid: The Birthday Party". If you didn't see that the game's title is the biggest foreshadowing of what the game will bring about, then you're just plain stupid, sorry.

On the other hand, I can charge straight into the middle of the enemy base on D-horse and complete the objective while being shot by all of the guards, I might even take out a few guards with a lethal weapon, and then charge back to the helicopter, and I get an S rank just because I completed the mission very quickly.

    - Got the legendary gunsmith as quickly as possible
    - Saved up a lot GMP at start and developed everything i could later
    - When i unlocked FOB missions, i was looking for low-level bases (take out 3 guards, and rush through them. You will still get a lot of GMP because of the multipliers)
    - Never really cared about the hidden tasks ( you will still get S rank)

    Something important to note is that if you prefer stealth to speed, you can still get S ranks by taking the slow route. If you get the hidden bonus "no traces", meaning you left no evidence of your involvement whatsoever, you get an automatic S rank. This means you can't:
    -fire a gun (not even the squirt gun, you'd increase the moisture in the area which is a trace I guess)
    -use CQC on guards in any way (including bumping into them. That one resulted in a really heartbreaking loss on one of my runs.)
    -be spotted
    -place or throw any support weapons
    -drop a cardboard box
    Essentially, you can leave no physical record of your involvement that supports the idea that there was a human in the area. However you can still have d-horse use defecate, break some objects, steal supplies, and hold up guards. It gives you an automatic S rank when you do it, and obviously is also a great way to accomplish the foxhound rank if you haven't already.

    For a while, I was trying to figure out why I loved the original 4 MGS games and why they were so memorable. I think I know now. The other Metal Gear games had characters and story elements which acted as a context for the gameplay. In TTP, the player is just given a task and they do it. Sure, they explain why you’re doing it at the start of the mission, but it’s nothing more than a single line from Miller. For the next 10-20 minutes, the player is lost in the gameplay and is no way in the universe of Metal Gear. The other games’ use of the codec made sure the player was always in the universe of the story and characters. This disconnect let’s the missions in TTP, which are already similar, blend together into a mess I never remember.

    As somebody who got 100% in MGSV the last 20 hours of it were horribly tedious. Collecting all the animals was a pain, same for side ops and mission tasks were hit and miss. Some of them were fun to do whereas others just seemed like they put them in to put in something. S-Ranks were great though. Fuck resource farming btw.

    I'm finally just getting into Phantom Pain, even though I am a long time fan of the series, my brothers having already played a crap ton of metal gear before I was even born so I've been exposed to it for a while now, but only now did I realize that this game actually gives you the most tactical feeling of an espionage game, if you play it as such and not an action game. You can plot guard routes on the map if you wait and scout them out long enough, and you can dissect parts of the map, if you actually know land navigation techniques. It's an amazingly thought out game, overlooked because of the lack of story as a result. I think most, if not all of the important parts of the story wrapped up at MGS3 anyways, anything after that is contrived and for the sake of business, which is a shame, but aprpeciated.

    Great insights. I agree with pretty much everything you said. I recently picked MGSV up again after 4+ years, and every time I'm improving a grade for one of the main missions, I remember why I didn't bother to do it in the first place (the horrible story and cut scenes). But gameplay-wise, it's a lot of fun. Remakes of MGS1-3 with the gameplay mechanics of MGSV would be amazing. Unfortunately I still have to collect the animals...

I thought after player saving some wild and rare animals, player could tame some special animals to send them back to the maps for backups or distractions or scouts but yeah I overestimated the complexity of this filler missions

    Ancient video, but a great one. I only recently completed the game and wanted to comment on the side ops. The best ones, accidentally, were those that integrated into the open world well.
    One of the mine clearing ops was very near enemies- mess that up, and you're under attack.
    Even better was one with the armored guys, patrolling close to an outpost to the extent that the guard groups and patrols basically intersected. I actually found this incredibly difficult to carry out the way I wanted to.
    There are other examples, but I found those in particular interesting...
    Anyway, godspeed, Bunnyhop, wherever you are.

    I personally don't want to replay the missions to have the s-rank, I hate the ranking system and all that. However I absolutely loved doing the side quests, they felt like real military contracts. Go in the mission area, complete the objectives the way you want, gather whatever resources you want, exfil out of the mission area(of course via helicopter, wish you could do that in other ways.). I think majority of my hours on this game I've just done basically the same side quests over and over again(because I've completed them all so it throws the last one back to do again), there's something about playing the game like this I absolutely love. It's also very casual, I basically watch videos on my second monitor while infiltrating the shit out of nova braga airport. I just wish there was a game that you could do this kind of stuff in better, and more, also making the bases feel more alive. For example in the airport there would be helicopters coming in and out of the base, there would be people going around taking care of infrastructure and whatnot, some people would be practising and all of that, just making it all more alive.

      @darksoulsismycity 5 лет назад +8

      True dat, although Peace Walker has probably the blindest guards and repetitive boss fights (mostly mech side ops, not the AI weapons/ZEKE), i actually felt more satisfaction in making a army in PW than in TPP.
      Because you know, at least the results for the outer ops dispatch missions were shown in a more entretaining way than in TPP. There was nothing better than your soldiers and tanks actually fighting the enemy. The only thing it needed was the ability to actually control them so that at least i don't get to see all my MBTK-70s only using their machineguns against more armoured vehicles instead of foot soldiers.
      And let's not forget about the fulton extraction. It made less sense than the TPP one, featuring Fulton extraction through ceilings and missile launchers that could fulton people literally with gas, and yet it was more entretaining than the TPP fulton, mostly because the areas in PW were smaller making it less tedious.

    This is seriously a gorgeous, spoiler-free and highly in-depth review of later MGS:V gameplay. Virtually everything you said was completely spot-on on how I felt. It's just all put into eloquent detail by the use of analogies, relevant comparisons, humor, and specific examples. After a few certain reveals and twists in the game, I felt the prospect of continuing somewhat tiring and empty. All the work I put into the game just felt tainted, for lack of a better word. I still can't decide whether the conclusion/epilogue was presented in such a way because of the supposed 'power struggle' between creator and employer followed by the need for a hasty release or whether Kojima's got something further up his damn sleeve. Irrationally, I can't help but to hold out hope for at least some kind of neutral or perhaps even bittersweet closure. The whole thing's got me coming up with 'spiracy theory bullshit like, "the hidden content data miners found was just a red herring. It all makes sense now! It was obvious... He played us like a damn fi-... Kojima's gonna eventually develop or release an already-developed patch that uses not just the data miners' popularized finds, but stealthily brings in new cut-scenes and finally finalizes the saga to an acceptable degree. All of this was done on purpose to make the player feel as fractured, lost, and abandoned as 'you-know-who'. It was all a beautiful ruse orchestrated to take the player on a journey that no developer has ever attempted. We weren't given the feeling of acceptance pertaining to the plot, we have to earn it."
    Well, it's not like it'd be hard to do, right...?

    Man you and I are virtually the same, as I suspect many MGS fans are. I 100% this game out of love and admiration for the whole series. I told myself this is it, this is the last Metal Gear, I don't care if I hate some of it, I'm getting 100%, and I did. Your video says it perfectly, the S rank missions are awesome, the side ops, and animal collecting, really shows how little time and thought was spent on aspects of the game. Leaves a pit in your stomach.

    I actually found that there are actually two options for getting an S-Rank. Both on the extreme ends of the spectrum. For one, you could complete the mission as blindingly fast as possible, as time is the majority of your points. If that becomes out of the question, then the priority should be stealth. I mean extract EVERYONE. NEVER get spotted, do an occasional mission task for the extra points, etc
