It stops damage happening to the gearbox as the car is temporarily rolling back while in drive (obviously being a police car it is an auto- autos can stall to!) Turn the TCS off and it won't stall.

The memory of that "cod faced" thing that was briefly imported in the mid 90s that wore Taurus badges is still fresh in the minds of Australian motorists. It had a face only a mother could love. The modern Taurus is definitely an improvement, but the issue is not just that some are only front wheel drive, but the fact that most people will be pissed off if it replaces the Falcon. How would you feel if Ford USA suddenly replaced the Mustang with a Camry clone?

@paspax In June 2010, new emissions regualtions introduced meant that the iconic V8 engine had to be discontinued. Ford phased this out quietly; motoring journals and magazines did not even report on it. As of now, Ford offers no V8 on any of its model lines. However, at the time the V8 was phased out, Ford's performance subsidiary, FPV, introduced a Ford America sourced V8, the 5.0 litre coyote (as used in the Mustang)....From Wiki.

Since the 1960s, Americans have had it hammered into them that front wheel drive is superior. Australian cars are designed to handle the abuse of local conditions, and as many European cars went front wheel drive early, and broke down a lot, the locals distrusted it. Australians are often pulling large caravans (trailers) instead of driving mobile homes, and front wheel drive is often useless for that purpose

  • @TheIronBubble

Ford nearly always smokes the Holden in these comparo's, it's been like this for years, yet everyone buys the Holdens, be it the Daewoo Barina/Cruze/Captiva or the Commo...Holden know how to advertise & create a perception that they are the shit, & Ford obviously don't. I reckon that's the difference. Also from experience average Joe generally thinks Holden is all Australian where Ford is the Yankee giant.

  • @Mechknight73
    @Mechknight73 12 лет назад

Trouble is, Ford USA have no imagination. They can't allow anything Australian made to compete on the US market. Holden were allowed to export their Caprice as a police cruiser because they wanted a rear drive competitor to the Interceptor and Taurus AWD. I'm a Holden fan, but it would be cool to see Australian Falcons go international.

their idea was to go for the baseline. but if they were to go the 6 cyl performance class it would be SV6 vs XR6T and the turbo mill would outclass the 3.6 sidi in all aspects. in my oppinion though the SV6 would be a close match to the base falcon, maybe a slight advantage as the improved power will help close the gap created by the i6 torque characteristics

@richardpalinkas Guess again. The "other" engine at the time only had 10Nm more torque than the Omega. It was still 51Nm down on the Ford. It came with a 5speed which helped, but it wasn't as balsy. It did handle better than the Omega, but the XR6 also handled better than the XT.
There is a reason that engine has been dumped after only 5 years.

Really, I would blame GM for the poorer quality cars that are coming out badged as Holden's of late. What I think needs to be done is: Holden make their OWN cars (they can be made in factories around the world, but the bulk should be made in Australia), which, when exported, should be badged as Holden's, they should have their own car designs, make their own engines as well as importing some from American cars, and start importing some American cars to sell in Australia.

Agreed with a lot of what you said, but the sales are certainly not evenly matched. The Commodore has out sold the Falcon for all bar 2 or 3 of the past 20 years, sometimes by a margin of almost 2 to 1 (during the AU years).

  • @SauronsEye

I like the bigger car but they're pricing themselves out of existence. A 4 cylinder from Japan or Korea is in the teens, around $15k or so. A Ford or Holden with 2 extra cylinders is twice the price and the big bangers with 8 pots, you're look at over $50k...the lower price will always win almost every time.

Why can't we have the Ford Falcon and Chevrolet Caprice (US Holden Commodore re-badge) for sale in the US? Now that the Crown Victoria is gone, there are no more rear wheel drive Ford sedans in North America. I'm sure that a slightly restyled Lincoln version of the Falcon would compete well with the Cadillac CTS, and other German and Japanese mid-size luxury sports sedans. GM would benefit from a new RWD Chevrolet Caprice too since the near identical Pontiac G8 disappeared in 2009.

the W427 is not a holden factory car it is made by walkinshaw so that realy means nothing put the new R8 up against the new GT-P and see who wins.

Neither has ever had a front wheel drive version. Both the Commodore and Falcon, since their very first model, have been rear drivers. Holden and Ford have both built smaller cars that were front wheel drive, but their full sized sedans, nobody in Australia would accept them as front wheel drive cars

The falcon defiantly is better, but to be fair though they didnt use the better holden 195 kw V6 which should be standard on all models.(excluding v8 models)

these are the base model holden/fords. Put an ss-v against an xr8 and watch the ss-v win. Although Xr6 turbo's a mean competitor.

Part 2..potentially ending the great Falcon!! Same goes for all other Ford vechiles outside the states. GMC can not dictate to GMH or Opel or anyone else
