Part of Alastor's charm is that you can never figure out what his motivation actually is. Every time I see him on screen I can't really decide how much of it is part of his performance/manipulation, how much of it is because of his leash and how much is because he actually cares. The fact that he is so hard to figure out makes him even more dangerous.
And fascinating.
I've admired the design of evil characters before or appreciated them, etc... but this show is the first time an evil character has been my favorite.
Alastor is just super interesting, every time I learn something about him I just have more questions.
Alastor is hands-down one of the most interestingly written characters I've ever seen. He's so hard to read, extremely powerful and dangerous, hiding his true intentions that are potentially influenced by someone controlling him. I can't wait to learn more about him.
In short, to truly trust him is like a Chef salad of good and bad that he’s done….

I’m gonna call it now and say this episode really exposed Alastors character arc.
He says many things, things that make it hard to discern what his goals might be but I think he’ll constantly say things to make himself look like everyone’s worst nightmares but actually do everything he can to protect those that he deems worth protecting. He says one thing but does another, he says he would never die protecting his companions but in the end I think he may try and do exactly that when things are their most dire.
Alastor giving Charlie his mic (which he has literally never let out of reach, and that she doesn't technically need, since there's a mic there already, making it a purely symbolic gesture of support) *right* after Rosie says to trust people's actions over their words just highlights how impossible it is to tell Alastor's motivations. In theory, he already has gotten a deal from her, she already trusts him a fair amount, so he really doesn't need to lay it on thick with her right now, but this is one of the few times I felt like he might actually kind of be proud of her a bit. He's so complex because until we know who has his leash and what they might be making him do, why he was gone, and his own personal endgame, he makes it so impossible to tell what things he means, what things are manipulations, and what things are a combination of both.
He is so hard to read and I love it. He's by far one of the most interesting characters I've ever seen!
What better person to get closer to than the princess of hell? Do something nice for her and you can get away with going kaiju mode on some loan sharks in front of her.
I also find it interesting that he takes Charlie to Rosie for free. Like, Alastor is obviously not equipped to deal with Charlie's crisis/meltdown, but once he's used that weakness and secured their little deal in exchange for information, he immediately takes her to Rosie, who IS able to talk Charlie through her emotional turmoil and get her back on her feet. Is it because he cares for Charlie's well-being to whatever extent? Is it because he's somehow obligated to protect the hotel, and Charlie is instrumental for that? Is it because he needs Charlie for his own purposes? Who knows!

This makes sense, no one really knew and we have the benefit of knowing from Helluva Boss what Angelic weapons are capable of.
@@malkarissalt theory: when Vaggie was hurt, it was after she spared a sinner and was actively being fired and condemned to hell. As far as she knew, SHE WAS FALLEN. Being hurt isn’t something that contradicts it, for her being hurt reinforced the change. Which is why her wings never grew back till here. She sincerely believed she WASN’T an angel anymore.
Vaggie also could have thought that in that moment She became a Fallen Angel, which possibly might be able to be hurt.

I think Alastor is setting himself up as an Advisor/Vizier type role. He knows Charlie is going to come into a big role at some point- maybe taking over for Lucifer, maybe something else- and so he’s establishing himself as “someone helpful”. It almost doesn’t matter to him whether the hotel is successful or not. Either it fails, and he’s proven to be right in his assessment of the situation, yet also helpful in providing the help she asks for, or it succeeds, and he shows that he’s willing to use his powers on her behalf to help her succeed, despite not agreeing with her proposal. Either way, he wins by earning her trust.
I think vaggie regenerated her wings because of not only accepting herself but also because of her love for charlie and wanting to protect her.
She may regenerate her missing eye in that regard. That might lead to the idea that angels are invulnerable.

17:44 I don't mean to leave so many comments, but I just noticed that the moment Vaggie makes the excuse of not being used to fighting with long hair is when Carmilla lets her own hair down. As for Vaggie's wings, it's theorized that because they were ripped off without the use of an angelic weapon, they had grown back long ago, she just hadn't realized it. Her eye didn't regenerate like it would for any other soul because it was cut off with an angelic sword.

10:35 "Can you imagine?" As someone who's almost thrity and still has no idea what a crush is supposed to be I found this so incredibly funny. Because, for me, it's the exact opposide. I mean, I get the mechanic behind it, I've seen it happen in movies, books, comics, etc., I've heard people describe it, I understand how it's supposed to work, but for me it just... doesn't happen. And I don't mind, I just think it's funny how for both sides it's just so hard to grasp how it works.
Same, on all accounts. I actually think about it a little bit like religion. Some people really believe in a higher power, some people come to religion late, some fall out of their religion because of trauma, and some people never really believe in any deity ever. Someone can go through the rituals of a religion without truly believing and there's a spectrum of belief ranging from "this belief is my entire life and it should be everyone's lives" to "there's something out there. Probably." Regardless if it's sexuality or belief, you can't force it. You can fake it for the people around you, but that won't change how you really feel.
The more colloquial meaning of "Ace in the hole" means a wildcard or secret weapon. However, the way Rosie is using it does mean that Alastor is aroace. Whether Alastor knows that about himself or not is up in the air.
You are right about Alastor being ace!! As an asexual it is very cool to have him as representation, we don't see it much :D
Yeah, "Ace in the hole" is a reference to Alastor being an Asexual (Asexual/Aromantic specifically for him). Alastor died before the term became well-known, so canonically he believes he's straight but hasn't found the right woman yet. Rosie knows better, though.

I heard that Mimzy was originally supposed to be Alastor's romantic interest until Vivzie changed it. That's only what I heard, idk if it's true, or if it was true at some point. 🤷🏻♀️

(The adrenalin boost you mentioned with the car lifting story is known as 'hysterical strength'.
Our brain usually limits our strength so we don't hurt ourselves, like how our jaws are strong enough to bite off fingers but our brains keep us from actually biting ourselves hard enough to do so.
But when we're freaking out enough for hysterical strength to kick in, we more or less ignore that limiter and go beyond what we're usually able to do! such as, like you said, lifting a car to save a loved one. Its pretty neat!)
I doubt you will see this but I believe Vaggie grew her wings back a long time ago. Unlike her eye that was cut out with an angelic weapon, her wings were ripped off by hand and would grow back. It has been shown that most with wings can hide them completly and either consciously or not she was keeping them hidden. The love made her release that fear and "flower". Just my 2 pennies.
I think she reawakened as a guardian angel because she's fighting out of love and a desire to protect Charlie. Carmilla's song awakened that love in her heart, thus granting her new wings.
16:26 They are most likely ears. 😂 We can see them moving in various scenes and are expressing Alastor's emotions very well. However there are demons with moving hair (like Beelzebub) but I really doubt a regular sinner has ability like that. Vivziepop said long time ago she has not decided yet if they are ears or hair and will probably in the future. I think these animation choices are showing her decision 😂
Hahahahaha I love the idea that they are ears. They add so much into the character and gives him another way to express his emotions since he's always smiling.
As an ace in the hole, it is great to not have that distraction or need but no one understands that I just don't feel it and honestly I don't understand how people do feel it.

i see the fact that vaggie didn't know that angels can be killed as the fact that she maybe knew that they can be HURT, but not killed. i mean, for example, sinners can be hurt, but not killed, if it's not an angelic weapon. she prolly thought that even if the angels hurt her with angelic weapon, she would survive this and won't die. no exorcist has been killed before, so it's kind of understandable why she didn't know it was possible. or at least she didn't think of it. plus, it's angels who hurt her, not sinners, so yeah
but maybe it's just a plot-hole. anyways, it still could be explained that way.
I agree that was probably her thought process after some reflection. It makes sense, and she seemed sincere. There probably wasn't really much of a reason to think about it on her part honestly.
I think either Vaggie thinks only an angel can hurt another angel or she thought since she "sinned" by sparing the cannibal kid she was no longer considered an angel and became fallen and that's why she could be harmed, tho this is just me theorizing it could just be an error in the script

11:09 Thought I'd specify, Asexual doesn't mean that they don't experience romantic attraction. In my experience having met a lot of asexuals, they tend to be very loving and sweet since they care more about the emotional connection than the physical one. There's also varying degrees from those who are repulsed by sex to those who are very lewd and like concept of sex even though they don't feel the need to take part in it.

The phrase "ace in the hole" means an unseen advantage over an opponent. Rosie is saying she knows Aleister's interest in Charlie is not romantic, his interest is strategic: grooming Charlie to be his ace in the hole for whatever master plan he has in motion.

I think Carmilla is based on a vampire, specifically Carmilla Karnstein from the novella Carmilla. Her hands being large is kind of a reference to bat wings. When we see her silhouette in the Pilot, her fingers are a lot longer and thinner, similar to bat hands/wings

I know a lot of people have said this already but I love Alastor. so far he's been one of the best-written characters I've seen. now I know people have been trying to figure out if his kinder actions towards Charlie are genuine, manipulation or because of his leash. is it possible for his actions to be a mix of all three? a leash forcing him to protect the hotel, manipulation in the hopes she'll unclip his metaphorical wings and whatever his next goal is, and a genuine fondness for her expressed in moments like when he actually handed her his microphone staff.

Idk why people have such a hard time with reactors pausing. I actually prefer reactors to pause and talk about their thoughts and then continue. Because 1) I'm here for a reaction, not the show, and I'm interested in hearing various peoples perspectives, thoughts, feelings, and ideas about the same media, and 2) its much less likely they then miss important info while trying to get their thoughts out. And 3) it's easier to avoid copyright stuff bc theirs less playing consecutively.
I understand people have preferences, but so do I so I figured I'd toss my two cents in and lyk I personally prefer pausing. But I think at the end of the day it should be the reactors preference! If I don't like a certain reactors style or find it distracting, I just click off the video, simple as that.
All this to say, I enjoy you pausing to give us your thoughts, but you should do it however you work best!

Rosie was also in the pilot episode for a brief moment, she crosses something out.
Before, Vaggie was an exorcist angel. Hence the wings with black stripes. But through Carmilla teaching her to fight with the love in her heart for Charlie and her desire to protect her, she reawakened her angelic self and became a guardian angel. Thus the reasons she has wings again and they are different then her old wings. That's my theory at least. (also, I to adore Nifty. She's so...entertainingly unhinged. xD)
I love how Auntie Rosie became more of a mother figure to Charlie in a matter of minutes compared to her actual mother Lilith... who simply abandoned her

My personal theory on why vaggie got her wings back was because she started to become more intuned with her divine souls elements because she wanted to protect charlie yes and they have had a healthy relationship but like what has been brought up at least twice by people in the show is that isn't what she is drawing her power and will from until now, we saw the shift in her mind in the song and the whole song was about where her motivation was coming from. One of my theories is that exorcist angels or at least some of them were originally the guardian angels of heaven like the soldiers and they were very much about honor and protection out from love and care and righteous fury against those that would cause harm to those. So it makes some magical sense that she would regain the symbol of divine freedom that are angel wings once as she found her roots again.
Of course i could just be reading too much into it or even completely off but thats what i am thinking until proven wrong or see something that fits better. I mean it could even be that vaggie might be representing the birth of the first of that kind of angel. Plus it was adam and lute that passed judgement onto her, not heaven so i don't truly know if she is quite the same as Lucifer and completely a fallen angel.

About the angels (like Vaggie) not knowing they can be hurt/killed by those in hell, especially when vaggie lost an eye, I think it is more about their attitudes and perceived level of importance and superiority. For example, you may kill spiders in your house by hitting them with a shoe, you know and accept that another person is capable of hitting you with a shoe, but you never think the spider is going to pick up the shoe and hit you with it. It might not be a perfect example, as those in hell are more capable of picking a weapon than a spider, but it highlights the importance of attitude and perception. Thats how the angels seem to see those in hell, as nothing more than a powerless pest whose number need to be controlled.
This episode definitely makes Camaro Carfight an even cooler character

About wether Alestor cares: He clearly has some form of an anti-social personality disorder (sociopathy or psychopathy). However, those people can form friendships and connections with other people, though they are superficial and they will not risk their own life and comfort for those people. My personal hope is he does care about everyone in the hotel, but he won't be selfless for them. If these people help him to achieve his goals willingly, he will give them a seat next to his throne. But if they stand in his way, he won't slow down just because it's them.
I love that you got the "ace in the hole" comment! I'm someone who's asexual but also relates really hard to Angel in bad ways, (@ddiction and tr@um@) and it doesn't take away distractions totally. Helps to not have the drive to be distracting but trying to date or socialize? Man ... I've heard some awful things since I figured it out for myself. Having such a visible ace character really is such a breath of fresh air.
Rosie never refers to her eyes, she refers to her "holes" as in eye sockets. I think most of Cannibal Town shares this trait (including the little boy demon Vaggie spared.
I think the biggest twist the show could pull, yet one that would still fit the character, would be alastor's favor being something VERY small on Charlie's end. Like, he asks her to "watch over his room" while he goes on a walk, when in reality, hes going to take out another overlord or other nefarious activities without her knowledge. It would work on multiple ends because it would give charlie more trust in alastor, it would allow alastor to continue with whatever plan he has, and he isn't twisting the rules, because CHARLIE isn't hurting anyone.

However hurt and killed are 2 totally different things.
And i think Alastor might have a secret agenda, but it will fade away once it hurts Charlie and their friends.
My current theory is that Alastors disappearance at the same time as that of Lilith means that the two of them made a deal.
Apparently Alastor and Vox had beef and Vox "almost killed" Alastor when he refused to join the Vees.
If he was heavily injured and on the run, it would make sense for him to seek any leg up... Like making a deal with Lilith for protection, sanctuary or healing.
The first thing he did after he returned wasn't to re-establish his rep or fight for more territory, but to show up at the hotel and offer his unconditional help.
To me, that doesn't seem to be in his character. He talked a good game about just doing it for his own amusement and to watch Charlie struggle trying to redeem what isn't redeemable, but I think the more likely answer is that Lilith used her power over him as part of that deal to MAKE him help.
The reason he made a deal with Charlie for his information was likely to gain leverage for the inevitable moment when he will attempt to break free from Liliths control.
He said a favour where she harms noone. Interceding with her mother on his behalf would certainly qualify.
As far as the wings coming back, I'm going with the show Lucifer logic that angel's can affect themselves with negative thoughts, self doubts, and feeling unworthy and that's what stops them from regaining and using their powers or even getting their wings back but that's just me
I love seeing how the majority are surprised by the detail that Rossie is too kind and understanding, how she knows how to give very good advice... Personally, I think that cannibalism is a more than valid reason for a kind and endearing person to end up in hell xD

2:15 while i'm not 100% sure about it, i think (by ear alone) it sounds most like the sound effect you hear when alastor in the pilot tells Vaggie "to smile" and the sfx plays while she grimaces at him, except this one is softer and more toned down.
Honestly i like looking for the smaller, almost insignificant details in the show from watching it so many times on youtube
imo vaggie got her wings back because she’s no longer carrying self hatred (like husk mentioned in episode 4) and has begun to accept herself and fully dedicated herself to her love for charlie without that burden and because they were ripped off (not cut off with an angelic weapon) I’m assuming they finally just regenerated.
I think She got her wings because of love, she learned to fight for love not for duty

Ive heard that peoples who have normal eyes, are indeed, normal, but people that have black eyes, somebody owns their soal (Husker, Angel, Ect) and people that have red eyes, owns somone elses soal (Vox, Valentino, Ect) and i heard a rumor that I'm not true is true, people like Alastor which have red and black eyes (when hes in demon mode) are both (own and owned)

I'm ace and its nice to have such casual representation without it affecting the story or needing to be explored more. Maybe it'll show you can have ace characters without having to explore it and just letting them exist.
But yeah, being ace myself i never considered how him being ace too makes him scarier because you cant use sexual or emotional manipulation nearly as easily. Especially if he is also aromantic. 😅
As for the Moxie, i imagine as an overlord Rosie keeps tag on whats going on in hell just like the V's and Carmine does. She knows what she's about and honestly, preparing to fight Heaven alone means shes got moxie imo.
I adore Alistor. I think he is guided by his own set of morals that aren't like others. I think he's there for selfish reasons but also he's started enjoying their company too. I think he thinks Charlie can help him get out of whoever has control of him and his contract. He also sees her being a good leader and every leader needs an advisor and he can slip into that role and manipulate her if needed to.
He's a great character precisely because he is so complicated and multi faceted. I don't think he has just ONE motivation. I think he has several. And even if nothing else he can be amused by them. I don't think he's lying and has been pretty up front with why he's there, he just hasn't told them ALL of the reasons. He let's some of them slip sometimes, is all. I can't wait for season 2 to see where they go with his character.
Could be Alastor is looking not only to free himself from whatever deal he made but to place himself high enough in the hierarchy that the only ones that can harm him are in his sphere of influence.

And yeah, its mostly kinda nice not being distracted by sexual stuff, but it can make dating difficult for some when most people expect you to be into it

Okay, I need to say this as an ace myself. From what I’ve found, people who accept that asexuality is a thing but don’t really understand it tend to fall into one of two camps: Either they think “Oh that’s so sad, never wanting to be intimate with anyone?” Or the one I generally prefer, “Whoa that’s like a superpower, you can actually focus on other stuff!”
I’m glad you’re in the latter camp, but hearing you apply the “superpower” logic to what makes Alastor scary just. I know I can’t speak for all asexuals, and I know you didn’t mean any harm by it, but it did rub me the wrong way. Being asexual doesn’t define _all_ of Alastor’s actions or character. It’s really just another facet of the blood-stained gem that makes up his character.
Does experiencing sexual attraction define _your_ actions or character? I would hope not, and I can tell you’re trying to be accepting, but I need you to understand that being ace doesn’t make Alastor less of a person. The joke in Al’s genuinely confused “A what now?” is that he legitimately doesn’t know what Rosie means. He doesn’t know he’s asexual; it’s a part of his identity that the ever-confident and self-assured Radio Demon is completely oblivious to, but it’s still a part him. An innate part of him, no more, no less.
I’m sorry if I’m sounding condescending or anything like that, I just. Really wanted to address this. Having someone as charming, fun, and popular as Alastor for ace rep is part of what makes him really important to me, and I’m sure a lot of other ace fans feel similarly; seeing that rep being interpreted as othering him just didn’t sit right with me. Rosie and Mimzy both demonstrate that he can still love people without being attracted to them in ‘that’ way. Good ace rep is difficult to come by, and while we love our ace deer boi, I personally would rather it not be seen as something that makes him “scary” - just different. I didn't mean anything negative by anything I said, and I'm glad you realize that. I didn't mean it defines him as a character, but helps define him like any attribute. As someone who is romantically and sexually attracted to others, it impacts my life and many of my decisions in a major way. While I enjoy my lifestyle and who I am, if I was the nefarious and scheming type such as Alastor, I think it is quite beneficial to not have those distractions while working your plans to fruition, understanding that he can still care for people generally.
I think the better way I should have put it, is it contributes to his character in the same way having an EMT or Doctor who is apathetic: they can focus on the facts and solution to the health issues and not be distracted by the emotional/empathetic toll that comes with the line of work. (maybe not the best example, but...) It doesn't define them as a person, but it's an attribute that contributes to who they are for sure. Thanks again!

I think at this point, Alastor genuinely cares for Charlie.
He's a schemer and always will be so of course he'll always be working on his own mischief in the background but at this point, I can't see Alastor doing anything to harm Charlie. His deal with her will definitely be used to undo whatever deal he made but beyond that, I don't think he has any malicious intent towards Charlie or the hotel.
He goes out of his way to teach her things and encourage her. He said he knew she could rally the cannibals all along. He has plenty of faith in her and also he trusts her with his microphone.
There's no way he's here for purely selfish reasons. Even if he was at first, he can't be anymore.

on the note of Alastor being more terrifying because of being asexual, the problem with that is that ace people can still have desires unrelated to sexual attraction, my theory is that he channels his desires into ambition but also into wanting to tear someone's soul into tiny shreds over his radio broadcasts, I never want to meet him, lol, but he does make for a fascinating character, as an ace myself it's nice to see an ace character but I'd love there to be one that isn't a serial killer
There's an interesting parallel between Charlie and Alastor going on, I think. The backstory we got from Mimzy is that when he first arrived in hell everyone underestimated him at first, and we've definitely seen that the rest of hell has low expectations for Charlie as well. But eventually he proved them wrong, and he thinks some day Charlie will do the same and turn out to be incredibly powerful and useful to him if he remains by her side

5:15 I haven’t watched the whole video, so maybe you thought of the same thing later, but regardless. I interpret it as the fact that Vaggie knows angels can be harmed (btw, her wings were torn off, not cut with an angelic weapon), but does not now that they can be permanently killed. For example, sinners bodies can be completely destroyed to the point were even regeneration won’t help them, but, unless they are killed with an angelic weapon, they just “respawn” in hell again, although the process in painful. That’s one of the points of exterminations, only angels or those who have angelic weapons can permanently kill sinners. Veggie was probably surprised by the fact that an angel was permanently killed.

The motivation Camilla gives Vaggie isn’t necessarily a good one in the moral sense. It’s powerful but fighting with the desperation that they talk about to save a single person can be very bad. Being willing to destroy the world to save who you love is something a villain would do and at that point you’ve let your love be replaced by greed. That is how Anakin became Darth Vader, his entire value in himself was placed in Padme and when he lost her all he had left was his self hate. Vaggie is in a very similar place with her love for Charlie, so I always see her song with Camilla as very foreboding, and something that could lead to a horrible tragedy.
10:07 "Ace in the hole" means an unexpected advantage over an opponent or obstacle. Rosie is saying she knows Aleister doesn't think of Charlie romantically, that she knows he thinks of Charlie as his ace in the hole for whatever master plan he has in motion.

when alastor said "she was potential that i could guide" i have a theory that he means her power had potential that he could unlock and that deal he made with charlie at yhe beginning of the episode my theory is that when chatlie masters her demon powers alastor is gonna make her do the favor and break him from his chains which i theorized he made a deal with eve and he will use charlie to free him that is a small theory or mine

Yes. Those are ears. He's pinned them flat back in episodes before. How do people NOT see this stuff? And if you didn't talk over the characters you wouldn't throw out theories about things you were literally just told, point blank, in the show. Vaggie knew ANGELS could hurt Angels, she didn't know a SINNER could, and you talked over the dialog that was giving information. Most of your reactions are amazing, but I'm sorry, I had to say something because that was getting to the point of unwatchable, and you're entertaining otherwise, enough that I subbed. So.. Constructive criticism is what that's intended as, but take it as you will.
