3:52 Great lesson, as always!!! The way I understood the theory of mixing in key is that the relative minor (or major) of the dominant or subdominant could also be compatible. I.e. in theory, 9A could actually be compatible with 10B. Most software and key sync features on media players only regard the subdominant, the dominant and the submediant as compatible (i.e that only 8A, 10A and 9B are compatible with 9A) but apparently, also the relative minor/major of the (sub)dominants are possibly compatible. To my knowledge, only the Pioneer CDJ 3000s gets this right in the way they now implemented key sync. But, as always, trust your ears first; things may be compatible according to music theory, but if they don't sound right, forget it.
I suppose it's no real surprise that in many cases those tracks would match up fairly well even though the key detection came back differently. At the end of the day there are only 12 notes in the western musical scale and only seven of those are used in any given key. Depending on the phrases you were mixing on then you may find that some of those key differences sounded better or worse elsewhere in the track. Whilst being in the right key is critical for a musician the way western music works makes things much easier from the perspective of a dj trying to find something that blends with the current track.
This the best information on the internet on mixing in key..... mixing in key only really works in theory.....If you really want to mix in key correctly make and play your own songs.....when i looked at Beatport Traxsource and rekordbox with different keys labeling for the same song i was like what is this..... True, i always used vdj key detector function but found out today it has the wrong key just like all the other programs with key detector fuctions, i think i will just use my ears and use the key detection as a extra tool
A song can be two keys at the same time. A lot of songs swap from major to a minor chord for certain sections, like the breakdown for example, so the song can be in A Minor but swaps to A Major for the breakdown and I guess Serato could pick up on the one note from the major scale and not be able to set the song to A Minor, as that note doesn't exist in that scale. You can test this by recording each phrase of the song seperately and then running them all through Serato and I bet they are all in A Minor apart from 1 or two phrases, which will be in Major.
I was unaware of MIK V10. Last I looked it was V8.5. This must be just for Rekordbox 6. Also some tracks change key mid point. MIK will show the change. Hey Andrew, I sent an email to mixed in key regarding the upgrade from MIK8 TO MIK10 and they sent me a new VIP CODE! Please let users know in your next video! :D Much Love from Mauritius!
#A #B have relative minor/major relationship, they essentially have the same notes/chords/keys played together but have their semi-tones positioned differently, and these semi-tones are whats different. In a sequence the major key could be playing a F, and the minor key is playing a F#, which is half-sep higher. To most people its almost not noticeable. You can even play 9A, 9B, 10A, 10B in criss-cross fashion because they have relative minor/major relationship (again just positioning of the minor/major keys, just 1 or 2 different notes). At the end of the day, its the overall vibe of the song, the keys are just cheatsheet guide but shouldn't be the deciding factor of choosing what to drop next. You sir, as you said before listing to the tracks is the secret key to good set and those aspiring DJ's should understand that it's part of the investment to have a good set.
They all sounded compatible, but MIK almost sounded like the same track. U would need to do this for hundreds of times to truly check which is the most accurate, but on this vid, MIK was the best I reckon
Hi Andreu, I would like to ask mixed in key does not show cue points on wav files. do you prepare your sets with mp3 format? How do you transfer cue points of mixed in key to recordbox?
6 and a half mins in and I've made the decision that I'm as well going with traktors decided key as the technology offered all offer different opinions to key, and won't actually matter as you could be mixing two songs that are out of key anyway (even though they say they're in key)
When I question the key between softwares I look up the songs key. Google tends to have that information. Then I know exactly where it is because when a song goes through all legal stuff the key of the song is reported for the trademarking and copyrighting.
Why when I analyze and song it says for example 8A but when I analyze only the vocal it says 1A for example? Why is this happening and what can I do?? And how could you do that Rekordbox analize the key of the tracks by using the analysis of Mix in key (because rekordbox sometines is wrong so I want that in Rekordbox appear the analysis of Mix in key only)??
Thanks for the explanation and personal opinions regarding MIK, Andrew... much appreciated. Do you find the Energy Level function of MIK is accurate as well? I'm playing my 1st club gig in less than a month and that feature of MIK appeals to me the most.
When you are using the Crate functionality from BPM Supreme to download a entire set of mp3 files, then Mixed in Key will not work properly, and no XML files will be imported into Rekordbox. To make it work, you need to download mp3 files individually, without using the Crate Zip option from BPM website. At least, this worked for me.
Does the energy level analyser in MIK worth it? There is a free alternative to it? I'm starting my career as a DJ and I will be playing a lot as a warm up, so I don't want to mess up too much with the crowd by playing a powerful song on the wrong time
but if i want to add more songs do i have to do THE WHOLE COLLECTION again with the cue points exporting? just want to do a couple more songs witouth starting over again :/
Some how, I have tried deleting and re importing the musics but still dont see MIK file on the playlist can someone help me out please, stuck for 5 hours
I’ve used every version of mixed in key. Every version is terrible at generating cue points. How hard is it to find the first downbeat than setting a cue point at the beginning of the 9th bar
Is there a improvement in mix in key to detect major keys, in the past mik often chosen to as minor scale. I notice often was a problem with F major where 7B was move 4A. Also it well know that beatport keys are not accurate as tunebat (which use Spotify analytics).
They say that even a stopped clock is right twice a day and on that point if a software is consistent in the way that it analyses the key does it matter if it is wrong?
how accurate are the key points on mixed in key 10. I was wondering if its save to let mixed in key 10 add cue points and they work correctly. Also I have 8.5 not sure if its worth the upgrade
Ok so I’ve added all cue points from MIK. I have purchased more new tracks. In my collection they show WITHOUT the hot cues from MIK. How do I add the MIK cue points to the new tracks I’ve brought? Really struggling with this
It's been a while since I've used MIK but this is a good video idea - making one solely about MIK cues - give me a few weeks, but yes, this has been added to my list of to do - thank you!
Hi, I follow your videos with a lot of interest and each one I find very interesting and precise. I need help. Now I have done all the steps and analysis and I practically find in the comments the Energy category but not the key next to it and I don't know it gives me the idea that it has fished out the analysis of the old version .... there is a way to understand if everything goes well???? Thank you!!!!!
Is mixed in key necessary if all your downloaded music is from BPM Supreme? Looks like BPM has the key listed, but not sure if mixed in key would make it more accurate for when putting it in rekordbox?
I seem to have a problem with mixed in key that I can't find an answer to. When I drag my songs from rekordbox into mixed in key everything works great except when I reload my tags in rekordbox to update the analysis I lose my song artwork every time. Does anyone know why this keeps happening?
Comparing to other tracks might not be accurate either, e.g. if I compare a supposedly 12B to a 12B track, an in reality they are both wrong are are actually 9B, then I could be in trouble when trying to mix these with other tracks :)
Does anybody know how to get the keys to appear next to the track names when browsing on an XDJ-700 without having to click into each individual track?
hot cues should be letters eg: A, B, C etc etc as memory cues are red dots. Memory cues are good for mapping in and out points while hot cues are good for jumping around the track real time.
@@ClubReadyDJSchool The only software i have ever used with Rekordbox are MIK 8,10, Platinum Notes 4.0 and Audacity.... Platinum Notes uses studio filters to process your files. It corrects pitch, improves volume and makes every file ready to play anywhere - from your Collection to a festival sound system... so they say....!!! so i import tracks into Platinum Notes, Then into MIK, then to Rekordbox... results seem to be fine... i have never used any of the plugin etc as i dont produce or use Abelton.. im sure you understand.. i bought PN alongside MIK..
You can ''cheat' by having one bass line playing lower than the other to ''hide'' the difference but the song cannot be too far away in key or it will show!
Hi! I have 2 questions about MIK10 and Rekordbox: 1) If i add to my RB library a new track, after been analized by MIK10...I still need to follow the process described in the tutorial -export cue points- ? Or RB will automatically detect the cue points? 2) In my RB collection i have Folders and Subfolders....but in MIK10 just tracks...there's any problem exporting with that? Or i have to analize track by track and manually create the folders? Tks Nicolas
don't the artists that make the songs know what key their songs are in? Why don they just upload that meta data? Is their a standard for that? Does Beatport not require that of artists when they upload their music etc?
I just purchased MIK10, works fine for me. I only have one issue, when i have new tracks and analyse them with MIK10 and export the que points it always exports the whole collection to rekordbox. It then overwrites the other que points. I always change the color of a que point for mixing in points. What am i doing wrong?
Hey! Really hope you can help - I'm doing all the steps to export the cue points from MIK to RB but the cue points aren't coming up? Have tried to resolve this for hours!
Not sure what to say, I just copied the steps from their video on their site and it worked for me, not sure what to say besides double check everything's pointing to the right direction, otherwise contact MIK help. Good luck :)

Mixed in key demands a constant online connection. Rekordbox does not! And i think that Pioneer are the most accurate as they are a way way bigger company with their products in hearts and mind!
different parts of a song can be in different keys too , just to add to the confusion . Mixing in Key all the time can just sound really boring so for most music dont worry too much !
"Determining the keys to a song is not an exact science" well it is for those who are musicians and been using auto tune devices/apps to tune their/ours instruments on the last 3 decades!!! If 2 different software say the key is different but the difference isnt bigger than 2 semi-tones,the track would be allways harmonically compatible without any concerne. But a difference from major and minor, even if they are inside the same harmonic compatibility, its a bigger problem!Theres a huge difference between major and minor scales. In my oppinion the best way to get totally certain of the key of a track its using a guitar digital tuner.Thats what its used to tune instruments according the singers key scale so we can play harmonically in key with the singer voice and/or other instruments.
Kind of salty because I just bought Mixed In Key 8 couple of months ago... but in the same time I don't really see anything new in v10. Could have easily been a free upgrade for v8 users but then I guess you can't milk the cow that way 🧐
Plot twist: if discrepancies can be found in any song, when mixing to another song, how do you know that either of them are the right key?! :O. Gotta trust those ears, right...

Love your analysis and results.... may i ask if you also use Platinum Notes 4 ? along with Mix In Key ?
Only get mix in key, don’t get the bundles
I don't personally but happy to look into it, do you rate it?
I think just use your ears I create a playlist and then use rekordbox to match the key and then go from there if that makes sense 🔊🔊🔊
yup
You can ''cheat' by having one bass line playing lower than the other to ''hide'' the difference but the song cannot be too far away in key or it will show!
can the program detect dorian, lydian, mixolydian frets?
Hi!
I have 2 questions about MIK10 and Rekordbox:
1) If i add to my RB library a new track, after been analized by MIK10...I still need to follow the process described in the tutorial -export cue points- ? Or RB will automatically detect the cue points?
2) In my RB collection i have Folders and Subfolders....but in MIK10 just tracks...there's any problem exporting with that? Or i have to analize track by track and manually create the folders?
Tks
Nicolas
I havr the same problem
My upgrade to 10 from 8 was free? As all the updates of MIK have been since I purchased the first version!
They made me pay - bastards lol!
If you bought it in february 2021. or later the upgrade is free.
don't the artists that make the songs know what key their songs are in? Why don they just upload that meta data? Is their a standard for that? Does Beatport not require that of artists when they upload their music etc?
you would think so
I just purchased MIK10, works fine for me.
I only have one issue, when i have new tracks and analyse them with MIK10 and export the que points it always exports the whole collection to rekordbox. It then overwrites the other que points. I always change the color of a que point for mixing in points. What am i doing wrong?
Bit hard to explain in comments perhaps a topic for a future video - sorry I couldn't be more helpful :/
After using mixed in key 8 it only shows the energy level in the recordbox 6 comments
So I have engine prime and record box but when they analyze they mess up the analyzing stuff if I were to get mix would it help a ton?
Please make a Video on Memory Cues VS Hot cues Am Confused
Good idea, will do
Legend!
Do you need to export the library each time you want the cue points to be added to the library or is this a one time setup?
No i think you just need to do the last steps - drag music in - from there on :)
@@ClubReadyDJSchool Thanks for that, I'll might have a go with this. Btw, love your videos and especially how you're always sending positive vibes. Brings a smile to my face every time I watch you!!!
MIK 9A was defintely the best match
thank you great help
16:12 - I’ve experienced lagging when loading the track from a USB on CDJs is this normal?
It can happen when using cheaper USBS. Try the sandisk USB ultra 3.0 (not 3.1) I did a video about USBS on my channel, check it out :)
is it worth to upgrate 8.5 to 10???? pls answer
watch the video, as it comes down to different variables - IMO I probably wouldn't upgrade 8.5 works just fine
I mix in key about 30 percent of the time i just go with the flow of the crowd
Kind of salty because I just bought Mixed In Key 8 couple of months ago... but in the same time I don't really see anything new in v10. Could have easily been a free upgrade for v8 users but then I guess you can't milk the cow that way 🧐
Apparently if you email them about it they send you a new V.I.P. Code and your good to go. Hope that helps 😀
9a on the the note.
I think the problem is “Loco” there’s no real melody on the track...
Mixed in key sounded better in my opinion
Agreed!
Plot twist: if discrepancies can be found in any song, when mixing to another song, how do you know that either of them are the right key?! :O. Gotta trust those ears, right...
well said!
