I think that more than being surprised at the Piaget, I'm more impressed about how quickly Marcus did the 180. Actually, the fact that everyone changed their impression when they got hands-on shows how open to admitting you were wrong you all were. Good stuff, all.
Frédérique Constant Manufacture Slimline Monolithic...Bought it solely for the high frequency-oscillator and smooth second hand. Did not think I would wear as dressy a piece very often. The look and wear of this watch, however, has transformed my taste. It is one of my favorites that receives a lot of wrist time. Although not small at 40mm, it has changed my focus from >40mm to much smaller models. While I have a 7.75in wrist, I agree with Andrew that large pieces can wear you and I find myself preferring a more understated wear.
@@marcusflack1523 - It is a beautiful wear. Smooth second hand much like Spring Drive. You cannot feel it or hear it. Can't really see it move, it's so fast. I have used the slow motion on my phone to convince myself it really oscillates.
Mines a little boring But Cartier To dressy to small to many Romans Until I picked up a medium santos - now I own the green - totally get it. The svelte bracelet and the gradient green dial Plus the industrial look Just wow
I've got the new VC 222, a VC Overseas Date in rose gold and a few other gold heavy hitters. I was initially drawn to the Polo, but trying it on back to back with my 222 I felt it was just too gaudy and trying too hard to attract attention. I feel the original slim square version would work better though. But on the main topic, I think I've only every been negatively surprised by trying on a watch, and my only regrets are the ones I bought without having held them first. As of now I'm waiting on a Czapek Promenade Goutte D’eau, ordered unseen minutes after its release, so fingers crossed that one lives up to expectations! 🤩
Ok, I’ll confess-Rolex 🫢 Been a watch nerd since the mid-nineties, started with op-shop and pawn shop vintage then gradually moved into Omega, Oris, Ulysse-Nardin, Ikepod, JLC, Grand Seiko. Rolex was for status seeking wankers! But…made an appointment with an AD in Melbourne earlier this year and fell in love. Put my name down and got a 40mm Explorer 1 last week. I can’t stop staring at it! BTW, visited the TT shop in Collins St and bought a Studio Underd0g watermelon. Changed the strap to green rubber. Fabulous! Highly recommend a visit to TT Melbourne-friendly, fun and relaxed.
I have the same feeling about Rolex, and despite having a $500K+ collection I've never even looked at one. I've always despised the company, their marketing and general image, but I'm strangely drawn to the Explorer II Polar and might even consider getting one. But if I go in a dealership and some snot nosed jerk tells me they can 'register my interest', I'll walk out and never go back.
@@davidjb3671 You’re certainly playing in a different league than I am so sounds like you may be able to afford to buy one on the grey market. I saw getting my Explorer as a challenge but I understand many people don’t feel the same. I was fortunate that the salesman at the AD I chose was very polite and helpful. Not at all dismissive. Was even given a hardcover Rolex catalogue and a magazine. I visited once more about 4 months later and got the call a week later. I have no idea if they actually had one and were playing games or there’s a genuine shortage 🤷🏻♂️
Grand Seiko. Not a specific reference, the entire aesthetic. I went to a boutique and had an experience. The sales person was fantastic - didn't push or try to "sell," simply kept pace as my enthusiasm begin to grow on site sharing information about the process.
I'm not a Hublot fan. But I saw a Hublot Classic Fusion Orlinski in blue.....blue case, blue bracelet.......and was surprised by how much I liked it. I tried it on & liked it. I even considered getting it....but didn't. Great looking funky watch but a bit too funky. But I still like it.
I can back you up there. For me it was the hublot orlinski titanium. This sealed the deal. I would wear that with pride. Before that moment the brand was not particularly for me.
For me, it was the Submariner Hulk. I already owned the 116710ln and chose that partly because I didn’t want a black submariner like every banker. I also thought a completely green Rolex would only be worn by a tool. But when I tried it on and saw how it shimmers and goes from bright green to a dark almost black colour, I was taken. They told me it would sell within an hour, so I went to watch a movie. Couldn't focus on the movie at all because I was only thinking about the watch. Left the movie theatre and bought the watch immediately. Now I love it and have some amazing photos with it. Turns out I was also very fortunate to get one! Lesson learned, I am the tool and don't judge something before you try it.
Honestly the Time + Tide Night Surfer is a watch I am obsessed with. Ive been looking at grey market ones for months now. It’s so dope. When is the next exclusive coming???
My T&T night surfer fits perfect- 15cm wrist. I thought integrated was a nope , but that watch is my favourite. Btw - it’s in the ocean at night from time to time 🤘
I’d totally written off rectangular watches. Then earlier this year tried on the Reverso Tribute in green and boy was I smitten! Guess the slow aging of my brain in the barrel I call my skull is making me more receptive to the finer things in life 😀 🍷 Also, talking of big watches.. is the white hublot gone?
I have two. Panerai as well. I was always a tool watch guy but deemed Panerai were the ugliest and most out of date design for a tool watch. Dismissed them for decades. Now older, I am smitten with the design of square case and round dial. And they have an appeal as a non tool watch variant. They look cool and feel good on the wrist. Cartier Santos. Never considered anything but a round dial for a watch. Square, tank, oval, or Muller/Mille abominations, need not apply. But recently found myself become a Santos groupie.
Funny how our minds can change over time. Is this maturity or simply getting over those easy likes and being brave enough to venture into new territory
I had the reverse experience with my 214270 39mm Explorer. Lusted after it for years, finally got it and spent a long disappointing year with it. Parted ways with it last week and the 36mm 124270 will be here in a couple days. Violated the rule of always see it in the metal and it cost me.
@@timeandtidetribe For me it’s three things, there is too much open space on the dial, “Explorer” is below the pinion, and it’s just an odd size that rides strangely on my wrist. My 16570 Explorer 2 rides better on wrist somehow and they were so close in size the Explorer 1 was redundant.
I love the white dial submersible. I tried out both the 44mm and 42mm. For my 7" wrist, I was leaning stronger towards the 42mm. Unfortunately, as some have stated, the bezel action on the 42mm is terrible. Very loose and sloppy time setting, sounds and feels cheap, too. The 44mm feels and sounds so much better. The 42mm bezel action is rubbish and not befitting a dive watch from a brand known for dive watches at near $10k. I could make the 44mm work. but, I really feel the 42mm visually looks better. Oh, well..
Watched a service centre taking a Zenith el primero mivement apart. The watch maker was saying how the screws are tiny, the whole movement very fragile and unnecessarily complicated. He suggested Rolex movements are work horses compared to this.. omega 8500 and new iwc in house stuff, he really dissed also. Oil drying up, rotors failng... he said that there is almost no critique like this on line, but he does not trust those brands... do you guys have any opinion on that? If and he also said the co axial movements don't really last 8 years between services. It's a bit of a gimmick .. interesting. I really wanted an iwc mark xx, or an omega, and really didn't want rolex, but found the feedback has got me thinking.... maybe an Explorer 2 after all
It just proves the fact that hands on gives the complete experience of the watch....
"We're all a bit on the looser side as we get older. Forgive your watch."
