I dont trust people who don't like The Mars Volta
I do, because I love TMV and I don't trust myself
@@IDontReadReplies42069 (its a joke, doofus.. also, pretty shitty to use "autism" as a put-down like this.. I'm guessing you don't get out much?)
Ha, ha, ha! The best people in my life love The Mars Volta! Few, but the best!
Definitely an essential litmus test.
Beto U.U well then who do yooooooouuuu trust?
Juan is the hero of this band. Talk about a metronome. So glad he’s recovering and we didn’t lose him too. RIP Ikey and Jeremy. Volta for life
Oh no rip
So many times he holds the crazyness together. Juan is the best!
U aint kidding...woo
Love this band forever..
Ah man Eva replaced him
"A band that is more interested in creating moments than creating hits. This is that band and this is that moment. This is the Mars Volta"
Zack de la rocha
RATM is an awful band. Especially now. They rage with the machine. Fucking losers.
Zack is a 🐐 and he introduced this 🐐 band. An iconic moment in music history.
Zack en VMA´s del 99 o 2000 si mal no recuerdo, Mars Volta tocó Drunkship of Lanterns
*2003
En ese entonces ya no tenía trabajo después de la separación de rage against the machine
9:47 mi parte favorita, son los reyes de la improvisación sin perder la esencia de la canción
Más de 15 años y esa canción me hace vibrar de emoción 🤩
The Mars Volta por siempre!!!!! 🤘🏽🇲🇽🇵🇷
Best opening track on an album ever. Chrome the fetal mirage! I don’t even know what that means but i never question my man Cedric.
chrome = cover
mirage = optical illusion
cover the fetal illusion
@@magpie-yf8gfthanks for clearing that up!
when you consider the subject of the song, I read it like this: chrome=medical instruments, fetal=pregnancy, mirage=not real, I think it's an elaborate way of saying ab*rt the unwanted baby. Especially because the preceding and subsequent lines are 'Will they feed us the womb?"
There aren't enough words to describe how much i miss this band.
lebebop Then maybe learn a couple other languages if you want to so bad 😂🤣😭
@@Odd_Combo have you learned ASSHOLE In any new language?
Max The Monster Actually, yes I have. Just mastered my 7th!
My brother, you are so correct.
I've never seen a band jam this hard, ever. This is fucking crazy.
How about Juan-Fucking-Alderete for holding this goddamn psychedelic mega-ship of a song together ::slow clap::
This is probably their best live performance I can find.
It is for sure I’ve searched lol
Yeah, I saw them live a few times and it was often a bit of a train wreck....
Man idk Thomas kinda misses the mark on the verse, atleast in regards to the studio version
@@algee4054 I wouldn't disagree with that but to be fair the bar was set pretty high on the album recording
the extended slaying on instrumentals is definitely the highlight here though
profound bass line
Alderete is the unsung hero of this band. Everyone fixates on the drummers, but because they're so absolutely insane, it's up to him to hold things down and give a safe home for all the craziness to come back to.
Until it's the intro to Day of the Baphomets, and he's losing his shit, too.
Chris Check I’m not 100% on this but I’m pretty sure Omar writes bass parts
Chris Check Juan is the hero of MOST projects i have seen him in !
@@NickB-md1oy it’s a collaborative process. Omar is the brain and director for sure though
Where were they?
To have this interrupted with commercial should be a crime!
thank you video cameras for existing so I could experience this masterpiece.
Seeing Cedric and Omar dancing and grooving opposite each other, peak life!
🙌 gonna be a hard time when one or both or leave the world. Def peak life🕯️
This has to have been their biggest brain performance of this song ever.
I'm glad this 20 minute version is still the standard for their recent tours.
Say what you will about Thomas, but his passion, chops and approach cannot be denied. I love his style.
There's a demo of Molochwalker with just Omar on guitar and Thomas on drums. And it's amazing.

One of the greatest rhythm sections ever to do it. Same goes for Jon Theodore era Volta
God, seeing Ikey in this makes me sad but also feel something special watching them perform this... I never got to see them until last month where they didn't play but The Widow from Frances, and NOT ONE SONG from Bedlam , Octahedron, NOR Noctourniquet and ONLY Asilos Magdelena from Amputechture. But Jon Theodore is an absolute GOAT AND BEAST, met him at a QOTSA show in 2011. Pridgen was my second fave drummer of all time after him! RIP Ikey and Jeremy! You are truly missed!
I don't think any Bedlam or Octahedron song ever made it into the setlist of the new era TMV. They did perform Empty Vessels from Noctourniquet though.
@@Pandamasque Damn, they didn't play that at the show on the "Minitour 2024" but wouldve loved it! And Bedlam is super underrated IMHO and those songs work AMAZING live. I understand the wanting to tour on the new album mainly, but they had never come to my city and was my only chance in the last 20 years, so I thoroughly enjoyed every moment.
@@Pandamasque and thanks for these uploads of older live performances of lesser played songs! Much appreciated!
2:21 that fill gave me the chills
2:45 build up is such a special pocket to land in, sweet jesus.. It's a salivation of the ears.
Not only did they get back together and play this on every night of the tour last year, but they added Sarcophagi back to the beginning!
Man I don't even care about new albums. Just to see these guys get out there and tour again would be epic.
Welcome home friend
@@christopherlopez2491 Epic initiated!
Yeah it fucking was. We were grooving all night long in DC.
Perfect Progressive Rock
Closer to acid rock
what a beast of a lineup. easily some of the best musicians to find each other and then do the thing. They look so happy
Jesus Christ that guitar solo just melted my face. Absolutely amazing.
holy shit the sound quality is really unbelievable
2021 and there´s nothing like them...
I only got to see them once. It was a religious experience though. A lot of people at the show didn't get it but after their set I was telling them that they just witnessed epicness and didn't even know it. It was like seeing a Zeppelin Show...just incredible wall of sound sculpture. Had to just feel the vibes and not try to hear a song, just let it wash over you
I am seeing them in Sept :D 2022 Tour
I saw them 3 times, the first being exactly on this tour, in Paris. It indeed was a religious experience, and probably the best concert of my life.
Unfortunately, this video doesn't really do justice to the wonderful spinning light behind Thomas, that starts just at the beginning of the solo/jam part... I it was a goosebump moment of the rarest kind !
The two other times I saw them, they were good, but not THAT good.
Miss this band more than anything
Great news!!.....
Ikey is that dude 🔥🙏🏿
I feel like such an oldhead saying I saw them on this tour, and the Deloused tour. Went many years without listening and recently got back into their older stuff. It hits different for sure, such a good band.
This band is so underrated. Im surprised that their not as big as they should be but I guess that what makes them unique
one of his bests performances! they will reunite in the future i know... too much chemistry
Dimension 71 gdcjcdghbhhhhh
Dimension 71 They did! Well, as At the Drive In, anyway
they cant. Ikey (the keyboard player) is dead
They can do it with another keyboard player. I think we all know no other would fit TMV as ikey did, he was such a talented man... but I think they can do it.
So they can be suficient men and do it themselves.. fuck the dead keyboard player... I mean.. Deep Purple moved along.. and they had the best keyboard player on earth, period.
At first I was like "hm, 20 min track, don't know if I will watch it all, but let's go". When it ended I was like "wait, what? I need more!!"
This is the Festival hall gig, Melbourne - they played for three hours no breaks in between tunes. They had posters up advising the concert was being filmed as you walked in. Still best gig I've ever witnessed, they should release the whole concert man. I remember being gutted JT wasn't going to play but when Pridgen started, it was clear they were taking things to another level!
it's a DISGRACE that they haven't released the full show. UNREAL footage
Yeah that’s actually a fucking war crime that they haven’t released it yet. OMAAAAAARRRRR ! 👁👁👽😎
@@AxiomApe OMAR, COME ON!!! EVEN TOOL ARE RELEASING A LIVE DVD FINALLY YOU BASTARD
they have a bunch of really well filmed concerts in a vault somewhere
Somebody let me borrow a nervous system...👽😎@@AxiomApe
10:32 Omar connects with the astral plane for a split second
you mean cedric?
This was in early 2007 not 2008. Thomas had just joined the band. This performance was part of a mini tour they did of California and Australia.
The trumpet challenge at the end is precious
This is the most the mars Volta ever was. That outro jam was an astral traveler fs
Thomas Pingree’s drums are tuned and muted perfectly.
What's amazing about Thomas Pridgen is that he's naturally left-handed.
My mom is naturally left handed too.
No way dude!!!!

High intensity from an amazing group!
One of the finest to have come out of El Paso TX
Omar's playing is amazing! Cedric's vocals are fire
Adrian Terrazas on Saxophone is one of the greatest that has come out of
El Paso and we all know it ! Vision is strong in the Southwest of Texas and border region.
Thomas pridgen on the drums is a freaking beast!!!!
A real world Animal from the Muppet Show.
2022. Amazing performance by THE MARS VOLTA!
no bro, this is from 2007
Of course it is, but I’m commenting and watching this video in 2022.
Still have my DVD of this. Gotta dig that out again at some point. Amazing.
Whats the name of the DVD?
Incredible. This is stunning...
Fuck....this is KILLIN'....like the best of Tool and Radiohead thrown into a blender , with a large dollop of King Crimson ...(the sax player is brilliant).
I think this has to be my favourite Volta track ever! So inspiring!! Love them! 👌❤
Same here. Best album opener ever imo
Es espectacular como toca marcel Rodríguez - López
still love your music!!
This is my first time checking out TMV. I read somewhere that they were a prog band, so I had to check them out. I get a very strong King Crimson vibe from this (especially when the sax came in). I like it. Before this, I watched some concert footage taken three years later (in 2010) and there were different guys in the band, and there were only 5 of them, and it wasn't as good as this performance.
TMV are almost as diverse as King Crimson in their vibe, sound and personnel. The 2005-2008 era is considered to be the most proggy and the most grand in terms of live arrangements. Alas, there aren't many pro-shot performances from then. In 2009 they went for a more stripped down approach, even while playing the same songs.
How is it that I just finished watching this video and I have this immense need to replay it immediately?
p.s. I can't figure out if Juan's more of a machine than Thomas, he just kept time by himself for almost half the performance.
I’ve heard this song many times but watching it live I thought to myself this is the craziest dopest fucking song ever live .
Holy crap cedric is actually singing the notes
I think, circa 2005-2008 was the golden era for singing the notes in TMV. Unfortunately there is hardly any pro shot material from then.
barely lol
Words can't describe how much I love this.
4:00-7:50 eargasm. The synergy at 6:05 between the 2 of them is incredible
There were SO many ways Cedric's intervention on the pedalboard could have gone wrong, and yet it sounded just perfect!
@@Pandamasque hahaha
i mean cedric had a pedalboard during at the drive in so im pretty sure he knows how atleast most of the effects work so thats why he didnt mess it all up
@@growskull Yes, but even guitarists sometimes mess up playing with their own pedalboard, let alone someone else's! Speaking from experience lol.
@@Pandamasque yeah thats true haha ive ran into that problem many times
Great, great way, of spending 20 minutes of your life! Thanks!!
Just unbelievable! What a band !
I can’t explain why, but this performance gives me Led Zeppelin vibes. I loved this whole album but damn there is something about their performances that just...hit it.
That was my first reaction when I heard Cicatriz for the first time. As a huge LZ fan, in the early 2000s I could find nothing contemporary that even came close to channelling that vibe, so this was a total shock.
Yes!! And Santana in Woodstock...
Like Zep, they could give you even more good shit you didn’t hear on the albums!
Gods
Sadie Kitten very gods...
This was a great performance!
clicked this on accident. Pretty good.
pretty good isnt enough
pretty good? just pretty good?
Yea thanks a lot for your unnecessarily stifled approval random dude with apparent superior musical authority.
Welcome :)
Would love to see Cassandra Gemini from the same show, (if they played it)!
The Mars Volta - Hot Gay Sex (2007 live)
Yo Thomas actually nailed his part, and although Cedric didn’t sing some parts he actually hit the notes
not every single one though.. :
I only got into TMV recently, but I REALLY like their music.. but I'm glad that I'm not alone in finding his live performances somewhat.. spotty. He's definitely not the first singer of a GREAT band to be much better in studio than live, RHCP are one of my favorite bands of all-time and Anthony Kiedis sounds straight up AWFUL live most of the time
@@enaidealukal9203 Ironically, the Peppers toured with At the Drive In (Cedric and Omar's earlier band) and Flea and John do guest work on their first few albums.
@@enaidealukal9203 it's pretty accepted that cedric isn't the best live singer. But I always think of him as a guy who started off mainly using shouts with occasional melodic lines (ATDI) who kinda fell into being an actual singer because his best friend wanted to start this crazy prog band. he can be very impressive on their albums, when he's not jumping around, instead putting 100% of his energy into the vocals. he's a terrific performer to watch though.
@@Aloysius2113 yeah he's AMAZING on the albums, and there's definitely a lot to be said for bringing the energy on stage as the frontman, even if the vocal performance suffers for it... and its hard to completely nail all the notes live every time no matter what you do. But not that many people who aren't musicians notice if a singer is slightly off-pitch live, especially when they're caught up in the overall atmosphere and action of a live show so its actually a pretty minor gripe. For those of us who are blessed/cursed with a good ear, it can be pretty hard to ignore.
Oh my God! Superlative is an understatement.
6:00 always a highlight when cedric starts fucking with omar's pedals... and then omar just happens to go off like a bottle rocket stuck in the bottle
Holy shit dude! What a wicked bunch of musicians. Each member is just insanely good at their instrument(s). Real top notch shit. Too bad they ain't still around
Oh but they are…
Oops.
What a sight to behold. Just when I thought I’ve seen the greatest MV performance another one surfaces. Christ!
What was the other one?
Amazing!
Goddamit I miss them. Here's hoping that Giant Cube brings us the rapture and TMV grace us with their presence once more. 🙏🙌👐
Man I wish I was at this gig
Festival Hall, Melbourne, Australia. I was there!
This was in Melbourne?!
incredible ,you was the last revolucionary rock band in the history
The most psicodelic band in the world
What an awesome band, Omar plays much better in The Mars Volta than he does in ATDI
@Nicholas Fernandez where did you hear that?
totally agree
maestros!!!
saw this band twice blew my mind
Thomas is a MONSTER on those drums!
fuck i wish i were there so bad
Probably the raddest Mars Volta video. I appreciate you!! Thanks for the upload. I come back to this often
For me, this is the must-see ultimate performance that I must see, bucket list
EPIC 🤘🏾💣💯🔥🔥🕺🏾🕺🏾👏🏾👏🏾👊🏾✊🏾
My favorite band o fall time! Sick bass on this!
Webster's Dictionary defenition of musicianship = Mars Volta
I'm declaring this the greatest shit ever.
Omar is just amazing on guitar, and so is Cedric on his singing! Sounds great here! I love the end part, without the annoying kids screaming from the album!
People say pridgen is overpaying...but don't realise that omar has been over playing his entire career lol
Aditya Nair this is a band full of people who want to show off how fucking amazing they are at playing so rightly so they should all play the shit out of their instruments, I hate the whole overplaying argument
That's the whole point. They are both going off at all times. That's what makes it so amazing.
Like it or don't. I love it.
he was pretty much following the boss' orders lol "rock out here but pretend you at church bruh.. get chaotic" (pretty sure omar says bruh all the time)
always loved these guys but they def play live as if louder = better
With that white mic it looks like he has a “personal massager” in his face.
White mic era and Omar eventually played white Ibanez that era
Excellent performance..Singing is in the kick..One love
It’s not Theodore.. but I still love these licks ... very impressive
I must be the only one who prefers Thomas
This was incredible! I'm lucky I got to see this show when it came to Minneapolis at First Avenue. Wow what a band!
This is the greatest thing I've ever seen. Best TMV song. Simply unreal performance
A song to melt your face off!
Всё лучшее из всех рок-направлений воплотилось в этих ребятах. ритмические рисунки - это вообще что-то непостижимое.
Festival Hall, Melbourne. Wonderful night.
When you listen to Pridgen, you realize how hard is to create a style...just ask Theodore.
Yep... and this is one of his better performances
Yeah, he plays too perfect.
So fucking good.
how i wish this video had 4k version
In the film WAKING LIFE, a young man bends down to read a note on the ground. It says "Look to your left." When he does, he almost gets hit by a car.
...This is how I feel listening to Mars Volta.
Pretty cool movie. It inspired one of my own songs (not released yet).
Anyone who says “the singer sucks” should watch this
He's definitely better on record but its hard hitting all those ranges live
Does anyone actually say that he sucks? Or do they just make the rather obvious observation that he sometimes struggles to hit the notes during live performances? He's obviously a really talented singer, and the vocals on the studio tracks are amazing, but he is definitely pretty pitchy live (which is not very unusual, properly hearing yourself and hitting the right notes in a live concert setting is pretty difficult, even for professionals with professional-level audio engineers and mics/monitors and so on)
@@enaidealukal9203 Also, unlike every other instrument, if yours needs some rest/retuning, there's not a tech offstage who can bring you a new one, or tighten your drum heads or whatever. You just have what you have.
@@HollowGolem yeah exactly, and unlike a guitar or a keyboard or whatever, its subject to normal human crap like getting sick, getting old, having an off-day, etc etc. Totally different ball-game.
hands down the best line up they had
