The fact that Jon Theodore can play this perfectly at such a fast tempo blows my mind. I’ve been trying to learn De-loused on drums for 15+ years and still can’t play all of it at tempo. Fucking legend and my biggest influence.
Yea Cicatriz drum pattern is tricky at high tempos. You definitely need to practice it slowly and make sure everything is tight before trying to get it up to speed
My all time favorite drummer. Saw him live with queens around 2012. Never got to witness the majesticness of Jon and the Mars fucking Volta....sadly... I play drums and listening to him taught me so much.ripped him off gladly
The Mars Volta are a band of two faces. Albums that are meticulously and painstakingly written and recorded with such ridiculous intent and precision, and live shows that are pure and utter chaos. Love it.
yeah its always funny to see people complain about their live performances...if you were ever actually there and had a bad time that's on you, if you want to hear the album you can just stay at home.
Because all of the mixer channels, compressors, and eqs are all fucked? Seriously, whoever did TMV's live sound during the comatorium tour should have been court marshalled.
I totally understand why people would think this sucks, but this imo is a great performance. If you want perfection, listen to the record, if you want raw unfiltered passion and energy along with some great improvisation, then this is it. They're humans, not robots.
this is (arguably) in my opinion one of the best live performances ever. because it specifically is improvised passion along with some perfection. no bands have the balls to play half of their song spot on and half of it improvised
I just can't get over how fast they played this song live. As a drummer a lot of TMV songs can be tricky to play, but they do so many of them double tempo live and I can't imagine how grueling that must be. True testament to the ability of these folks.
Jesus Christ, Jon Theodore! Playing these grooves at this tempo is just INSANE! This was and always will be the very best incarnation of TMV. RIP Ikey.
This performance is a scattered mess that works so damn perfectly!! That’s what I’ve always loved about The Mars Volta. Never a straight forward performance. They always add their own uniqueness to every show and make it so the audience can experience them. The power and passion this sound gives off! Amazing!
I don't know....I read a lot of the comments and I can't help but laugh that so many people make the assumption that drugs are the cause and the effect of the performance. So here's my two cents (hahaha): I think the performance is fantastic. The thing is that The Mars Volta are an extremely polarizing act. I know so many people that love them and hate them. But I think that a band like theirs is purposely ambiguous in their scope. It's part of their brilliance. And I have to have to admit that I was one of those people that didn't get them...INITIALLY. But the more I listened the more I went AHHHHH. The light came on. So,when I watch their performances,I can't help but feel that they are being "engulfed" by their own sound. There is something so primal and savage to them...and yet so cerebral and esoteric. I have really grown to love this band.
+Robert P You've put it so well there. I saw them live right after their second album dropped, when they opened for System of a Down. I wasn't that familiar with them at the time and had no idea what I was seeing. I really wish I could see that performance again with my current appreciation.
'At the Drive-in' broke up because they were basically "Bored" with making that kind of Music. THIS Music is a result of them fighting against that Boredom. And God bless them for it. They Don't LOOK bored, do they?
The drummer is playing so fast and clean, it’s pretty unbelievable. Omar is also unbelievable here for other reasons. Lol. I’m thankful this video exists
May this performance live forever to show the world what the mars volta were all about and continue to inspire musicians who want to try and deliver this kind of energy to the audience. One of the best versions of Cicatriz!
Saw them live once and Cedric looked me dead in the eyes during the show and just focused on me for a minute. lol Kinda freaked me out a bit. My body suddenly got really warm like I was in some spotlight or something. He's strangely intimidating. Maybe he mistook me for his long lost brother or something because my nest of hair is so similar to his. xD
Always thought Cedric was a dick. He talks so much shite during shows and comes across pretentious and sensitive. Gotta give him credit for relationship of command though. Best rock album since never mind.
Just be happy you've never gotten the Will Swan stare down. That shit is terrifying which is unfortunate because he is the nicest dude but yeah when you're in the crowd he's like one of those jesus statues. No matter where you are in the crowd it looks like he's starting right into your soul.
holy shit. new fan. virtuosity in musicianship, funky, interesting themes and songwriting, lots of changes. Latin flavorings. Damn these guys are good. Love the filth in the guitar. Cedric is an incredible performer. Maybe wish the bass was more upfront but sounds pretty good on the recordings. Flea sounds great on the records. Every drummer has been great. Every album is quality, too. I'm big into these guys right now.
look for bootlegs from the european tour of 05, imo their most technical/ quality performances, cedric is spot on and their live version of cassandra will blow your mind. for me, that was their golden era
I love The Mars Volta so much, I can't even explain it in words. They renewed music and the rock genre. In addition to being unclassifiable. I love their discography. Omar is a virtuoso musically speaking, and Cedric writes outstanding lyrics. This guys just blow me away...❤
this is a friendly reminder that passion must overcome anything in any craft, this performance will always lift up my spirit with the explosion of energy that it carries
I don't think I've ever been more pissed off about a RUclips ad interrupting my listening and viewing experience. Aside from that this is a Fucking amazing live performance!
On their albums I'd agree, when there's hella noise and dissonance it's all tempered with skill and tamed to the point of being digestible (rick rubin is a god) but live their compositions just suffer a brutal and savage rendering. When your albums are produced almost flawlessly, it kind of confuses your fans when you sound like mangled garbage live.
The complainers are nuts. Theodore's killin it on drums with Ikey and Juan holding it all together. Everything Omar's playing is working and Cedric's vocals. Maybe a few too soon cutaways but that "Shrouded in Veils!" and everything else he's doing. Come on! Even Marcel's percussions coming through. Great performance!
Increible presentacion!!! miadmiracion completa para la energia y entrega de estos individuos en escena. Verdaderamente admirable. Es una gran lastima no poder verlos en el presente. amo esta banda desde el primer sonido.
Hello kids. Never put a live mic In your mouth. We had to take this chick who played in my band to the hospital for electrocuting herself. We were a metal core band and she was trying to get that distorted mic in mouth sound. And all of a sudden she turned into dead weight and slammed her head on the corner of the stage. And was out cold it was scary as fuck. Apparently the shock stopped her heart for a few seconds.
I think this was the first live video I've seen of them. Cicatriz ESP was thus a long time favourite of mine. I really miss the MV and am happy about the new songs. I wish I'dve seen them more often back in the day though.
In my opinion this is a great performance, but i saw that most of comments doesn't agree that. One reason why i love Mars Volta and is that i have never heard perfect quality on their live performances, Cedric doesn't sing at all, but thats what mars volta sound its about. Its not about drugs either, you can realize how much they enjoy what they're playing live, even when it sounds like shit.
Eugenio Magaña Gámez I believer you're describing the spirit of punk rock and yes that's in high doses with TMV, but live they sound like shit? And Cedric doesn't sing? Really? really?

Technically sometimes they sound like shit, yes sir! And that's awesome, i love that. I really don't understand why people want them to play exactly the same as an album record, its stupid. They worth much more for live performance, thats my point.
I never got into this band because it was just waaaaaaaay tooooooo over the top. It was like a psychedelic 1968 performance that was a cross between Grace Slick, Janis, Grateful Dead, MC5 and a bunch of others. The only thing missing is the "twilight zone" spinner in the background for everyone tripping on acid. At first glance, you'd think this performance was Woodstock 1969. Theodore, the drummer, was the entire energy of the music...not the performance, but the music. When he left, the musical energy completely changed.

"still to come... The Black Eyed Peas"
Fucking lol
LMFAO I had to comment on this legendary comment since no one else has this whole time. Too funny 😂
they’re out to lunch 🤣🤣🤣
5:10 the awareness of Cedric to pull his Friend Omar away from future hearing issues was spot on!
Progressive ambition, jazz spontaneity, punk energy.
It *actually* is perfect
Couldn't have said that better
They don’t know this but it was Theodores show the whole time. He kept the chaos together

Listen to his early band Golden... Cedric saw one of their shows pre Mars Volta and his mind got blown...so he hired Jon when tmv formed
The Mars Volta are a band of two faces. Albums that are meticulously and painstakingly written and recorded with such ridiculous intent and precision, and live shows that are pure and utter chaos. Love it.
the only modern band that understood what rock is about. No half ass, no bullshit. Go up there, fire it up, create moments, explode and leave.
yeah its always funny to see people complain about their live performances...if you were ever actually there and had a bad time that's on you, if you want to hear the album you can just stay at home.
i feel sorry for any band who have to go onstage after the mars volta
jajajjajaajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajajaj.
It's prob worse for Dillinger Escape Plan. Rip :(
Because all of the mixer channels, compressors, and eqs are all fucked? Seriously, whoever did TMV's live sound during the comatorium tour should have been court marshalled.
Too bad this isn’t the comatorium tour.
Especially if you have to share the same mic! Highly recommend you bring your own or at least a fresh...non-deepthroated windscreen.
Whoever edited this really captured the vibe.
Underappreciated aspect for sure.
