The original Nirvana "In Bloom" lyric is actually "Don't know what it means." - Sturgill added the phrase "... to love someone" which is brilliant in my opinion.
It "almost didn’t make it onto the album because he sang the incorrect lyrics to the song’s chorus. Simpson heard Cobain’s line “Don’t know what it means, when I say” as “You don’t know what it means to love someone.” He only realized the mistake when his manager pointed it out, after the completed record had been turned in to Atlantic. Fortunately, the slightly-altered “In Bloom” cover was eventually cleared after Simpson penned a hand-written note to Cobain’s estate explaining the situation. “I just wanna say, ‘Thank you’,” he said of the mishap, “and I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to screw the song up.” "

The sailor described in sea stories is about Sturgill himself! The whole album is dedicated to his son, telling him stories and giving him advice. Which is why it’s called a Sailor’s Guide to Earth
You think Metamodern is a paint by the numbers country album? Did you even listen to it? The last song sounds like Pink Floyd and the whole album is mixed and recorded to sound like a 70s album. But you probably listened to the first track and made your assumption.

Thank you for speaking the truth. “It Ain’t All Flowers” went places that country music, and music in general, will rarely go. Truly a one-of-a-kind track. Turtles All The Way down took the spotlight as the “DMT country song”, but Just Let Go transitioning into It Ain’t All Flowers is like a graceful trip that takes a turn to darkness and pain when it’s time to confront your demons. Two of the most underrated deep cuts on the album.

This album really kicked ass. I'm new to country music and I'm excited to explore it
I know this comment is old, but allow me to just give some advice. A lot of country pop/rock is often called country when it isn't. Country is very folk based, it's America's reggae essentially, taking the traditional sounds and putting blues and folk together. Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Loretta Lynn, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson Kris Kristofferson were the greats of country music, besides Hank. Now, here are some other newer and true country artists I hope you'll like.

@@gambasTV same! I saw Sturgill on a very old Joe Rogan and vaguely remember hearing some of his stuff from High Top. But I wasn’t at a point in my life where I could appreciate his work. The. sound and Fury came out and was blown away a country artist had an album accompanied by an Anime and duh into that album pretty hard. Over the past year I’ve gone through a really bad break-up and started listening to his more somber work and fully appreciate his genius and mastery. Sound and Fury is even more impressive in hindsight because he has such immense talent writing traditional country music and went and made a brilliant Psychedelic-Boogie-Rock album. Even better is that this guy was a railroad worker and became famous in his 30s. He has the right amount of life experience to draw from to make his sound and art authentic. I’m a huge Sturgill fan now as well.

Hard to get past the suggestion that Metamodern isn't refined or nuanced. Just my amateur music critic opinion, but I think they're both incredible albums.

I never liked her to, I thought her last album was her carreer best and it still an avarage album, so I was going for Lemonade expecting to hate it, but then I realised that this is a hell of an album. So give it a try, go open minded for it ;D

mr melon, have you heard sturgill's new album, sound and fury yet? an animated feature popped up on netflix a few days ago- it's the whole damn album set to animation! this was my first time hearing sturgill simpson, and iv'e been blown away by the experience. it felt like the first time i saw the heavy metal movie as a kid. there's also gratuitous boobies for one song. it had me cracking up. i know i love this new album (i've probably listened to it at least 10 times already), but i'm eager to hear your take on it. thank you for the quality content.
Yeah I discovered it on Netflix, I was hooked by the awesome animation style and then the music took me by surprise, I really like his songwriting.

Great review. I agree with almost all of it. I'm a lifelong country fan that has branched out from there and this album hits on so many of my musical tastes.
Just played breakers roar first time ever and I just cried. What a beautiful song
The album was wrote as one continuous track and the major label boys thought that was too difficult for the general public to understand so we got tracks; and you proved their point, well done. The best part of your review is your inability to say anything negative about it, this album will go down in history as one of the greats, the only thing we are waiting on is time. Also he is the soldier, he was in the navy, the album is a biographical story told in first person to his son- it's a master piece musically and lyrically, you should do more research so I don't have to do so much sharp shooting, I hate participating in this stimulus response comments crap

Hopefully he can keep up the quality and not get lost in the fame and pressure of it all. This last tour has had to be taxing. Amazing performer, he leads his band with a guitar like no other artist I've ever seen. If you haven't heard his interview with Joe Rogan on the JRE podcast you should definitely give it a spin- very interesting to hear about the Van Morrison/Marvin Gaye influences on this album structure

Hey I may be a bit late to the party but 3:18 the line "don't know what it means to love someone" was actually added by Sturgill and can not be found on Nirvana's rendition of In Bloom. Sturgill said he added the line by accident because when he recorded the song he sang it from memory and he had always misremembered the Nirvana song as having that line when in fact it didn't.
Have you head of Old Crow Medicine Show, Anthony? I'm curious what your thoughts are on their music. It's much more "old time" country inspired than Sturgill Simpson (from what I've heard) but I still personally like a lot of their tracks for the way they pull off the "old time" sound without just rehashing the past.

Sturgill was in the Navy for a while, it adds a lot of depth to Sea Stories. We love it, my division plays the song about every day.
I liked your review and all, and Sea Stories is my favorite song on the album right behind Welcome to Earth.
I'm just having a hard time figuring out why you think Sea Stories is a "southern" song? There's nothing related to the south at all in the song?

The thing with Sturgill's cover of In Bloom is that the line "He don't know what it means to love someone" was not in the original; it was a change that he had to get permission to make from the Cobain estate. Admittedly, the lyric change is so good and fits so well into the rest of the song that it feels like it was there the whole time.
Man, you didn't say a single word about how profound this album is. The themes and messages on this album transcend time and culture. Simpson is a legitimate genius. Breakers Roar, for instance, is ridiculously deep.
Some people can’t dig that deep within themselves just yet. And maybe never will… these insights are very familiar. 🍄

He actually changed the lyrics a tad for the In Bloom cover. in the original it just says "Don't know what it means when I say" the "love someone" part in Sturgills version is just him incorrectly remembering the lyrics
I really really enjoy this album! it is one of my favorites of 2016. It is very crisp and dynamic.
He could have mentioned the cohesiveness of the narrative throughout the entire album.

Sturgill Simpson was a US Navy sailor, not a huge surprise with a lot of the topics. Great album none the less.
Sturgill has a very distinct sound and his music is really moving and unique.

Hey Anthony could you review a local punk rock band Max raptor?
It's very hard to call this a country album by any set of criteria. It's more of a weird alt/soul/folk beast. Anyhow, what really strikes me - as someone outside of the US - is how country artists are immediately tarred by their genre. Once a country artist, always a country artist. What surprises me more, is that Americans outside of the south seem to treat country music as this sort of comical joke - that country artists can never really be serious, no matter how good they are as they will always be stuck in the country annex. There seems to be a real ignorance among young americans (to borrow from bowie) about how great the country greats were - Hank Willams et al - and how country music is the greatest genre America has produced in the last 100 years, in combining the centuries old strands of Blues and Folk and then combining it with Rock n Roll, Rock and Pop to create the only purely American musical art form. The musical catalogue of the south dwarfs the East, West and North. As I say, I have no connections to the South, just the view of an outsider looking in.
+gibsona01 I think part of the problem is there is a HUGE bias and stereotype regarding southerners, especially southerners with an accent. If you're from the south, people tend to make judgements about your character and intelligence based entirely on the fact that you're from the south. So those attitudes about southern people get projected onto the music produced there or the music that draws influence from southern culture.
Two years later? Why not? In my opinion, as a Midwestern American; Eastern, Western and Northern Americans tend to be turned off by country because of its strong ties to southern and midwestern life styles, which are very different from the other regions of the country. So, I think they just have a hard time relating to it. Furthermore, country has become a bit of a monolith in the last decade, so that may be the reason for the mockery you're sensing.

It just doesn't make sense to say you did the cover because you wanted to honor Kurt and then change the lyrics to his song. I love the entire album I just can't stand the in bloom cover.
