Just discovered this guy a few hours ago, and haven't stopped listening since. A little Waylon. A little Bocephus. Some Keith Whitley. I legit hear so many different artists coming through this guy. Then he goes from outlaw country to Nirvana and completely makes it his own without disrespecting it. I really just can't say enough. Pure talent. I am blown away.
Came here to say all this, just not as well as @Lobo Johnson This song and the rest of this album continues to blow me away. I force this on anyone within earshot of my house nearly everyday and people walking by will stop and jam with me while I'm working in the garden. It's quite nice actually.
Why does this have thumbs down? The god damned song is over 20 years old. It's been played 50 trillion times on the radio every day. Can't a new, brilliant artist give a creative cover version a try? Nirvana snobs are the worst. This is dope!!!
+Mac Lethal Its because Nirvana is like this untouchable entity that people think should never be covered and they just blindly dislike covers because of their god like worship of Kurt Cobain. Even when the cover is fantastic like this, they will dislike it. Also especially because it is country which many people in music tend look down upon as a genre and rightly so in some cases, but they should not here because Sturgill Simpson is one of the rare great country artists of today and his new album is a great breath of fresh air in such a debased genre that is country music.
It's stupid and I could care less if someone wants to cover Nirvana. It's like a punk band covering a 70's ballad. "Oooh who would ever think of doing Nirvana as turgid country with ridiculous overwrought twang. It's ART for dumb people.
Agreed! Good song works in almost every genre and there's always a possibility for a new edge. Like "Always on my mind" - it was great to begin with and PSB made their own kind of great. Or "Toxic" - practically any "Toxic" cover is at least interesting.
I remember showing my dad this cover on a road trip. We played it all the time on that trip. Will always have great memories of this song and him. Glad to hear someone have a similar experience!
When I heard this song for the first time, I nearly drove off the road I was so blown away. Filled me with joy that someone could reinterpret this song so beautifully.
This song makes me feel the way the ex I loved the most made me feel. As well her daughter. And shit. I wish I could take back the wrongs I’ve done. I would give anything to have my little family back.
This is a good example of how great music can be a chameleon, morphed into a non genre specific transformative reinvention with grace. A great song indeed, Il take the country version tonight, its what it always should have been...a song about love and appreciation.
I love how Sturgill adds that line after "don't know what it means" where he sings "to love someone". It completely changes the meaning of the song. Nirvana's version of this song was about the alienation they felt by the crowds of people at their shows who sang along with the words but didn't know what they meant. Sturgill's version is about how the song made him feel when he was a teenager. Ironic that he falls right into Cobain's trap, and yet reimagines the song as something beautiful in a whole different way.
I picked this song for my wife and I's first dance at our wedding. Cried when I first heard it. Can't listen to just once . I think it's a cover from someone who is trying to pay homage to the original song. Perfect and respectful peice of music
Jimi Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower is a better cover. Even Bob Dylan (the songwriter) said the song became Hendrix's after that version came out. The English Beat's "Tears of a Clown" is a pretty dope reimagination as well.
Sturgill wrote this album for his son after discovering a letter his grandfather wrote to his wife and infant child while he was in Japan during WW2. His grandfather did not think he was going to live, so the letter was a farewell/advice to his child. It moved Strugill so much that he wanted this album to be a letter to his own son. For this song, I believe Sturgill wanted to teach his son about the temptations and behavior exhibited by adolescents. He wants his son to treat women with love and respect. And if you can do that, it can be a beautiful and happy thing, Which is why I think the horns were added. They represent happiness. The music video get's much more cheerful when the horns come in, as well. And for the record, I love this version of the song.
Crazy how much the whole song can change by Sturgill adding "Don't know what it means to love someone." Kinda puts the whole idea of the song to a different perspective. Keep up the good work! Loving it!
+John Adams Ah, Mr. Adams, you're humility is such a refreshing break from today's politicians. Glad to see you dig Sturgill. Any idea if your friend Mr. Jefferson enjoys the song? :)
+Alex Orr Ha, the real John Adams was anything but humble. Read up on the election of 1800, it makes the current election look like civilized child's play
+Tim Brown Ha! Yeah, I was being a bit facetious :) If Jefferson was remembered at the first continental congress as being quiet and brilliant, Adams was basically the guy who wouldn't shut up. That was indeed an ugly election. It's amazing to see how that friendship developed, then fell apart during Adams' administration and subsequent re-election campaign, only to be rekindled later in their lives. But what am I on babbling on about, Mr. Adams (who seems to have excellent taste in music) could no doubt tell us all about it :)
Just can't stop listening to this song. RIP Kurt. I will always love the original you created. But this is truly one of the best covers I have ever listened to.
Sturgill was a soul guide for me through this video in particular, as well as Turtles All The Way Down, and anything he’s done. Sturgill is a Savant. The pride of Kentucky. Love you pal
As an English professor -one long accustomed to spotting the 'hidden meanings' in art- this video just about breaks my heart with its empathy and sweet reassurance. It's all about Kurt. It's so, so about Kurt: the Kurt who alchemized dissatisfaction and wanted love...the Kurt who made it home. Honestly I can't watch this video without getting a little teary-eyed. Sturgill makes all this possible, people. You can't help but feel the stark legitimacy of his music: how plugged-in to himself, his subject matter, and the art of music-making he is. We don't see his kind too often, so take note.
'Cause he's a child pretending to be an adult and s/he thinks this is how it's done. "Hurr durr fake job but so smart I have strong opinions about tiny details." Home life must suck for that kid, alas.
...and please get with that last sentence: poor kid actually got out a Thesaurus to come up with 'bigger-sounding' insults that...well...end up just making him look like an edgy douchebag 12yo liar.
I was always told, as a child, that if I didn't have anything nice to say, I shouldn't say anything at all. I reckon this is the type of situation they were talking about. So I'll just say this, I happened to like Mr. Harmon sharing his thoughts and insight. I'd love to pick apart your charade here, but then I wouldn't be saying anything nice. I will admit though, sometimes it's fun to be a troll. Nice troll is way funnier than asshole troll though. Try it, you might like it.
100% Kurt would absolutely have loved this. Kurt has only ever said one thing that I didn't like, and it was him saying Tool ripped off some brothers that made stop motion animation with the song Sober, but he was a generally nice guy
I was thinking the same thing, I don’t like to speak on the behalf of ones who are no longer with us, but I do truly believe Kurt would have loved this cover ❤
Whenever I would take my little wiener dog out for car rides I’d always play this song. I honestly felt like he liked it and was always relaxed with it playing. He sadly passed away a few months ago and I haven’t been able to listen to this song without tearing up, especially the very last 10 seconds of it. Every time I get to the last 10 seconds, i always imagine him ascending with little wings and a halo and flying upwards into a sunset. Anyway, I don’t think there could have been a better way to cover this song. Sturgill did a very phenomenal job and this song will always be something bigger than I thought it would ever be.
Everyone from Sturgill to his band to the production team behind this did such a masterful job re-arranging this song to fit Sturgill's voice and sound. This could have gone an infinite number of directions. That it ended up here is a testament to his vision as an artist and it doesn't get much better.
Normally I shy away from country music, but this stopped me dead in my tracks when I heard it profiled on NPR. This is obviously a tune with a lot of personal meaning for Mr. Simpson.
This is incredible. There’s around 3 genres in one song. HUGE props to Sturgill. Got that southern twang, some Chicago instrumentals, and a buzzsaw rock sound to tie it all together. 10/10. Blows the original out of the water.
Greatest remake in a long, long, long time! And greatest video in a long, long, long time, too! WOW! Just...WOW! I got chills and I swear Kurt would have loved this!
In an interview, Sturgill said he was a huge Nirvana fan, and was heavily influenced by them as a kid. He also said this would be on the next album as a tribute. Haters gonna hate.
+Matt Allen Best comment in here yet. I like Sturgill's music, but mostly I like that he doesn't let other people/big business/haters/etc. drive what he does. Can't wait to see him for the first time in Milwaukee!
Two things... If you're bitching about the lyric changes, just stop. Kurt made a song about teenage angst and conformity, and Sturgill morphed it into a song about finding yourself through finding connection (the fact he did that with a small handful of words is a testament to his ability and insight). Had Kurt lived to be a 50-year-old man, I have zero doubt that this version would speak to him more today than does the original. It's an evolution of the song, not an attempt to copy it. And on that note, if you're complaining that he "stole" the song, or "did it wrong", just stop. As a huge Nirvana fan from the jump, let me just point out that Kurt's "genius" was mostly writing and playing 50's pop songs using punk concepts. EVERYBODY BORROWS EVERYTHING. There is no true 'originality' in music, though acts like Nirvana and Sturgill Simpson come about as close as anything we get these days.
Why are people making this about politics..¿? Also why is a you watch Fox News a roast or put down? You sound like the dumb one for being a pretentious uppity think you know it all. When you don’t know shit. What happened to freedom of speech? Well here’s your victim card, good until you pull your head out of your ass. Unless you were sitting in the room with Mr. Simpson when he made the changes and said why then you can’t say shit about other people’s opinions and interpretations. So run and go tell on me to the PC POLICE.
@@clintoncagle1545 hey "clint". The fox news dig was mostly due to my opinion of a news station that spreads fear and lies to the "gullible" people of this country and because i had about 7 IPA's on my deck at the time shortly after watching Sean Hannity spew off some b.s about our "current situation" in a youtube wormhole. Also, i have never used the term "well said" when relating to fox news. I was implying he has depth, meaning, truth, and thought in his comment, unlike fox news...i dont call the PC police you nerd. "Friends dont let friends get haircuts". Sturgil is the man.
IDK how many times I have listened to this track over the years. Hundreds of times. It is so incredible. So amazing. So on point with the spirit of the original. Yet, standing on it's own perfectly well.. So good. So so good.
I was never a country fan but seen Sturgill Simpson in Glasgow off the back of Sound and Fury and got into his country stuff. Dunno what it is, but the dude has got it. Done sound and fury in its entirety and then his older stuff, best gig I've seen for a good while.
I really hope this is the start of something new in country, going back to the classic deep country voice and acoustic instead of the half assed southern rock that country has become
+MKninjas I agree completely! I've never been much of a country guy, but Sturgill and Chris Stapleton have me re-considering that. Sturgill's first two albums were also really good so is Chris' first two albums with the SteelDrivers.
Exactly! Authentic - not that Arena Country garbage they're forcing down our throats so poser millionaires can capitalize on poor people living the lives they sing about and pretend they've lived.
Sturgill is one of the best country music artists alive. He gives homage to the old boys like Waylon and willy but at the same time he puts a new, fantastic twist on it.
Linton S. Dawson. What does it mean to be a nirvana purist? Genuine question. I mean, do you need to memorize all the lyrics and shout at teens with a nirvana shirt on etc. Or does it mean simply you like nirvana the same as half the population of the entire world?
@@makkieskates8631 it means that he liked nirvana just like every teenager that went through an emo phase, and because of that he has the right to sign off on another group singing his groups songs. I’m sure sturgill Simpson doesnt give a damn what he thinks
we're living in a golden age of genius country-singer songwriters in their late 30s who are recovering addicts, and also craft beer. what a time to be alive
I'm not a big country music fan by any means, and Nirvana remains one of my favorite bands to this day. With that being said... This was awesome. I really enjoyed your version, and I'd be willing to bet Kurt would've as well. Thank you.
Oh wow. I knew I should’ve never stopped listening after I first heard breakers roar. This is amazing. I’ve never been heavy on country but sturgill is changing that for me.
What a bunch of snobs here in the comments. Take off your snobby purist blinders and appreciate this gorgeous loving tribute. So well done, thank you for the crossover and the soul.
Well all you people saying "How could he butcher this song so bad...Etc...." Ya'll need to look into the artist and his roots. This is country like the 70/80's.. Ever hear of Keith Whitley? He did it in his style...Check out Sturgill's other songs and album, he's the real deal.. Just my own opinion..
Look, I get it- he changed the lyrics. But the man took the spirit of the song and made it his own. Stunning. Thanks to you Sturgill. Ignore the haters. Keep doing what you do.
Because of this song, and others like it, I was shaped into a lover of this music. I'm 15, and while all the kids at my school listen to some rap music ( I like some rap but new rap bothers me) I'm over in the corner talking to my teachers about music and old TV shows they like, that none of the other kids have even heard of. It makes me happy.
What a beautiful cover. Sturgill Simpson is the man.
one of the better Nirvana covers out there with a completely original take on the lyrics and feel of it. I'm in love.
Joey?

Yup!!!
+Daniel Davis its really not a good cover

Agreed. Awesome!

I love it when someone does a unique take on a classic song and does it justice. This is awesome.

Sturgill is doing a lot of shit that can't really be lumped in with a genre.
Me my dad and brother listened to this album on repeat on a 3 day road trip to Arizona my favorite memory of all time

This is a sweet breath of fresh air. I hope Kurt can hear this.

I don't think any of Nirvana would've wanted to hear this. The whole message of the song has been thrown out the window.

You definetly don't watch fox news. Well said.
Well said.
Bro whoever wants to say he copied or stole is a fucking idiot who doesn’t know what a cover is, no need explaining anything to idiots
IDK how many times I have listened to this track over the years. Hundreds of times. It is so incredible. So amazing. So on point with the spirit of the original. Yet, standing on it's own perfectly well.. So good. So so good.
The two fellas have a few things in common. So must we all. A great song can prove that!
I was never a country fan but seen Sturgill Simpson in Glasgow off the back of Sound and Fury and got into his country stuff. Dunno what it is, but the dude has got it. Done sound and fury in its entirety and then his older stuff, best gig I've seen for a good while.
This should not work. This should not work, but it's perfect.
This is just surreal.... gorgeous....... lost in time
This is fucking gorgeous. Wish I had this on vinyl for a rainy day, takes me to another world
The way that you see the world is both sad, provocative and inspiring all at once.
Exactly! Authentic - not that Arena Country garbage they're forcing down our throats so poser millionaires can capitalize on poor people living the lives they sing about and pretend they've lived.
get all 3 of his albums..you will not be disappointed..get them on vinyl sounds sooo good.
Sturgill is one of the best country music artists alive. He gives homage to the old boys like Waylon and willy but at the same time he puts a new, fantastic twist on it.
Right on, Slowhand!
That strong voice. He is a winner.
who would have thought this could be made into a country song? so excited for this album
+Candace Sharpe if at its core it's a really good song then it can transcend to other genres. Kurt wrote really good songs!
The video's production and this cover version is the most innovation the country genre has seen in a few decades. I dig.
Sound and fury was my introduction to this bloke,
What a superb musician 🙏
I will never think of this song the same way EVER again
Wow... Just wow... took me a moment to realize what this song was. despite being titled in bloom... it didn't connect. Nice take on this, well done.
As a Nirvana purist, I am pleasantly surprised by this cover. Fresh interpretation and fits Simpson's new album well. Isn't just a forced cover.
Linton S. Dawson. What does it mean to be a nirvana purist? Genuine question. I mean, do you need to memorize all the lyrics and shout at teens with a nirvana shirt on etc. Or does it mean simply you like nirvana the same as half the population of the entire world?
just soak the song up ,for fucks sake , why give a fuck whose singing it...
"Nirvana Purist" Or in other words, High School Freshman
LintonSDawson what. You don’t like your covers to be forced?
@@makkieskates8631 it means that he liked nirvana just like every teenager that went through an emo phase, and because of that he has the right to sign off on another group singing his groups songs. I’m sure sturgill Simpson doesnt give a damn what he thinks
we're living in a golden age of genius country-singer songwriters in their late 30s who are recovering addicts, and also craft beer. what a time to be alive
Moved off grid...your voice echoes through the hollow and up the mtn ♡ love you, Sturg!
you and cody jinks are my newest favorite country artists. kick ass man. took a original and made it your own. 👌👌👍👍👍
One of the finest covers ever made
I'm not a big country music fan by any means, and Nirvana remains one of my favorite bands to this day.
MMMM...So good! He brings so much more emotion, depth & grit. God blessed him with an old school classic country voice. Love it!
This gets better as it progresses
I will never get tired of this
What a bunch of snobs here in the comments. Take off your snobby purist blinders and appreciate this gorgeous loving tribute. So well done, thank you for the crossover and the soul.
Well I'm pretty sure 99% of the world has no idea what this song is supposed to be
+Kasi Karuppan Exactly. There's no "supposed"
+basilrose so it's... Nevermind
This artist is shunned. WHY? He is is an outsider. Aren't/weren't most musicians outsiders. THIS IS TALENT FOLKS.
GREAT cover by Sturgill. I wonder the time he spent listening to this song/album. Made his own. I'm impressed. Loved him the first time I heard him.
Man this reminds me of Cash singing hurt from NIN , this is a goodin! Carry on🤘
I've noticed that this song sounds better with every listen.
Hands down my pick for album of the year
Thank you Sturgill. What an amazing cover. I can’t stop listening to it. Perfection.
This is a very good interpretation of In Bloom, beautiful layers of sound.
this is hands down amazing
Well all you people saying "How could he butcher this song so bad...Etc...."
Ya'll need to look into the artist and his roots. This is country like the 70/80's.. Ever hear of Keith Whitley? He did it in his style...Check out Sturgill's other songs and album, he's the real deal.. Just my own opinion..
Love it. Loved the original. You can do both.
Look, I get it- he changed the lyrics. But the man took the spirit of the song and made it his own. Stunning. Thanks to you Sturgill. Ignore the haters. Keep doing what you do.
Just happened across some Sturgil and I'm hooked. What a voice.
I love Nirvana but never cared much for In Bloom. I really like what he's done with it. Like this much more than the original version!
Rusty Wood I love the chorus of the original but not the verse
In Bloom is their best song.
In bloom is great.
As a fan of both Nirvana and Sturgill, I hereby condemn any and all downvotes. This is a terrific cover by a consummate artist.
almost like Waylon Jennings doing Nirvana.... I dig it, Two of my favorite things, Outlaw country and 90's alternative!
Waylon would have at least got the lyrics right.
That's what I thought...sounds like Waylon
Because of this song, and others like it, I was shaped into a lover of this music. I'm 15, and while all the kids at my school listen to some rap music ( I like some rap but new rap bothers me) I'm over in the corner talking to my teachers about music and old TV shows they like, that none of the other kids have even heard of. It makes me happy.
This singer has a country vocalist sound but with an indie folk sound to it at the same time. Great cover. I'm digging this artist!
