Summer Elaine And Drunk Dori is a great song though. It's probably the one track on here that takes a little longer to grow on you, but it's just really, really good.
I'm seriously so thankful for this channal.. I can't get away from this album; and I'm someone who was strictly hip-hop just 6 months ago. Thank you Anthony. You changed my life..
cough cough listen to envy cough cough cough cough great screamo/post-hardcore that anthony got me into back in 2014 cough cough cough cough a dead sinking story is the album i started with and now it's one of my favs ever cough cough
The White Album is the story of a Summer romance. "California Kids" is about the beginning of a Summer that the singer expects to be the "Best Summer Ever". "Wind in Our Sails" is about the start of the courting this hypothetical romance. "Thank God for Girls" is about having a girl to be with and to think of at the beginning of the honeymoon period in a relationship. Leading into "Girl we got a Good Thing" talking about the bliss of being with and in the Summer romance. "Do you want to Get High" is about the relationship taking a turn and turning into the boy following the girl into things that he maybe shouldn't but he is ok with it because he is so in love. "King of the World" although a very personal track to Rivers still applies to the story of the album and show that the boy wants to be there for the girl "Summer Elaine and Drunk Dory" is about the relationship starting to drift apart and the boy almost being aloof of the fact but still somewhat caring for the girl Leading into "L.A. Girlz" which is the boy making the desperate attempts to court the girl back into his life after she broke up with him. And then the closer "Endless Bummer" is the aftermath of the relationship falling apart and him sort of reminiscing about the relationship and is in mourning over it. But at the end of the track the Seagull effect from the start of "California Kids" plays over, symbolizing the fact that this story plays out every Summer and will continue to do so.
+BigBad Bryant Maladroit? Hurley? EWBAITE? I think it's a little bit repetitive to say this album is the best since Pinkerton, you definitely need to check out those other 3!
I felt like you skipped over Endless Summer a bit considering it was the closing track. You referred to it as just acoustic, but the finale of the song (and subsequently the album) was very strong when the full band came in and was kind of "Only in Dreams"-esque. Excellent guitar work and that little drum fill that Patrick Wilson does in conjunction with the nice bending and descending lead guitar lick is a really nice way to finish the album, especially followed by the sounds of seagulls and reverberated ocean waves. Also, "we've good a good thing" has a really great bridge and solo section that kind of redeems the song for being a little "too cute" I think, but anyways, I agree with pretty much everything you said here though, great job.
Wow, a strong eight to a light nine! I'm super glad you liked the album, Anthony. I personally didn't really dig Jacked up, some of the piano and falsetto actually remind me of the critical era for Weezer, and while Summer Elaine indeed doesn't have particularly interesting lyrics, it's still melodically one of the catchier tunes in my opinion. Thanks for a tremendous review, Anthony.
To me this easily the best album Weezer have made since Pinkerton. I really didn't think they would deliver an album that would be able to sit alongside their 90's albums, but hey, im glad they proved me wrong. Weezer have shown flashes of the greatness on some of their 00's releases but on this album Weezer have managex to put 10 great/excelent tracks on one album. For me this album is easily a 9.
i can see that. i'd maybe put green on "strong six" and red in strong five, but the rest is pretty accurate. Only Weezer could have two perfect albums, and two near perfect ones, and also a raditude in their discog.
Agreed, though I do think Pacific Daydream deserves more credit. I wasn’t fond of the aesthetic pop direction, but the gorgeous melodies of songs like “Weekend Woman”, “Sweet Mary” and “La Mancha Screwjob” eventually burrowed into my brain and won me over.
I think this is the best album they've come out with in a long time, it takes everything I love from the blue album and Pinkerton and mixes it with what their later albums could have been if they were done better. I think it has a great California cost post punk sound to it
I felt the same about this album. It's an easy listen, but one that is quite rewarding as a long time Weezer fan. I wouldn't even say they were going back to their old style, just being a bit more genuine and lyrically less over dramatic.
I disagree with him saying the red album was poor because it's not, it's one of my favourite weezer albums and I like the fact all of he band members contributed to the record!
Blue Album: 10/10 Pinkerton: 10/10 Green Album: 7/10 Maladroit: 8/10 Make Believe: 2/10 Red Album: 5/10 Radicate: 1/10 Hurley: 6/10 Everything Will Be Alright: 7/10 White Album: 8/10
Wow. I didn't know Weezer released a new album. Actually, I wasn't aware of the last three. I'm out of the loop or the industry is deader than I thought. I'll check it out since I respect to reviewer.
Weezer made an introspective summer album with the white album and it works well. A bright spot in the tepid modern music scene. I think the album cover is perfect, it captures the band on the beach but it's black and white, highlighting emotions and introspection.
The only "bad" album is Raditude the rest like red and make believe, Hurley, and green aren't that bad, some bad tracks but nothing terrible, you still have amazing albums like Maladroit.
True Meowgi I hate it when people don't even mention maladroit. Its as poppy as the green album yet is still awesome with tracks like fall together, burndt jamb, and american gigolo
I hated weezer after Pinkerton save a few songs here and there. I am still in shock that they put out a track-by-track consistent album. I guess they're back on track. Took long enough. This thing is like a fresh taste of Blue and Pinkerton but also incorporates a more age appropriate sound, along with a sound appropriate to the time period we are in and Weezer's fanbase. I would say 8/10
no way man. you couldn't possibly imagine what it was like to hear that first album in 1994. this album is good, sure, but the first one completely saturated culture
Yes! Exactly my thoughts down to a pin. To me it sounds like a touch of The Blue Album and Pinkerton mixed with time if that makes sense. Definitely one of my favorite albums from them
I love how you were like 'confirmed: this is a great album' because most of us Weezer fans were like 'wait this is great, am I allowed to like this yet? Is the consensus that its good? A good Weezer album?' Thanks for the confirmation lol.
+ParawhoreLoL so you need anthony's "confirmation" to like an album???? I never had that notion because my first review I saw of his was for "Kill for Love" by Chromatics where he gave it a 5 and made lots of factual errors... such as referring to a VOCODER as "autotune" when the whole POINT of chromatics was the analog recording style... very ignorant
+dradfromthebu I've only subscribed to Anthony in the past month, I made a joke that us Weezer fans were so surprised that their album was good that it was nice to hear a well respected music reviewer confirm it.
You'd rate Hurley over Make Believe? Make Believe is pretty solid, it occasionally suffers from the 'so-so verse with good chorus' but there are some great songs on there, Hurley is just a bit of a mess. "Everything will be alright in the end" was a return to their 90s sound to placate fans who had got annoyed at the T-pain collabs etc, in fact I'd say that EWBAitE sounds very much like it's channelling the blue album, whereas this latest one has shades of Pinkerton, it has some melodies that are reminiscent of that album and then occasionally some big loud lead guitar that also harks back to that era, but it's like pinkerton-via-Brian-Wilson... which is then odd, because I'd take pinkerton over the blue album any day but the white album isn't quite up to the standard of EWBAitE... I mean don't get me wrong, it's a solid little album but with the last one it really felt like they just threw EVERYTHING they had at it.
I know your "about" section said to leave a comment on your latest video if you want to suggest an album for review, but we get compared to Weezer all the time and I tend to agree with your review. I don't know if we'll ever get back to the Blue Album/Pinkerton days, but a great effort with the White Album. Would love for you to check out our latest album, Transgressor. Happy to send you copy of the vinyl if you like. Thanks and hope you take a listen!
Yeah this album is definitely their best in a long time! It takes me back to the blue album all the reasons I actually fell in love with this band along time ago. For sure a solid album 👌
+steaming mangos You mean a fan that's been loyal to the band since 1994? Seen them over 10 times and gotten countless people into the band? One who posts daily on the forums and has never once turned my back on the band despite quite a few questionable albums? That kind of Weezer fan?
That's all fine and dandy but too often do I see devoted weezer fans say songs like TGFG suck because "It doesn't sound like weezer". I think if you truly appreciate a band and they're sound then you should expect them to grow and change their sound and that exactly what they did here. TGFG sounds NOTHING like classic weezer and I think thats great. I love classic weezer as much as you and as such I'm very satisfied with songs like Do you Wanna Get High but I think devoted weezer fans should open up their minds more to them changing their sound and style. Yes TGFG sounds nothing like normal weezer. No, thats not a bad thing at all. Same could be said for "Pretty Peggy" by Wolfmother. Thats an even more extreme example of a band changing their sound that devoted fans criticize but that I believe they should open their mind up to.
+steaming mangos I have an open mind to all things Weezer. It's just that TGFG is bad Weezer. It's abrasive musically and the chorus is awful. Rivers' rapping is awful. The song just doesn't work.
My only complaint is that it wasn't long enough. I wanted more. It's less of a complaint more of a enjoying it too much for it to end so soon. Like my sex life.
man, Weezer just always makes my heart happy. I can put on pretty much any old Weezer song and I'll smile and enjoy ... probably even sing along to MOST if not ALL of their peppy beats.
I don't get why people don't like Summer Elaine and Drunk Dori. That was easily one of my favorite tracks on the album. Best to worst: Do You Wanna Get High? California Kids Summer Elaine and Drunk Dori Endless Bummer LA Girlz King of the World Wind In Our Sail Jacked Up (Girl We Got A) Good Thing Thank God For Girls
+BEYOND AWESOME FILMS I don't feel like there's any "worst" track here, Weezer is about that, Rivers was aways about throwing his opinions and live experiences into the lyrics and combining them with some great indie rock / pop instrumentals, this album is not only Weezer stepping forward, but also going back to their primitives and celebrating it, it was a really good record overall and I don't think that classifying it from best to worst is a nice thing to do.
Completely agree with everything said here, where I felt EWBAITE shot for the 90's sound and fell short, this album seemed to combine elements of both later and early weezer to create an excellent record that was long overdue.
Weezer put out a "best of weezer" playlist and this entire album is on it
gotta promote

What? Last shadow puppets have a new album?!?!
also 'Endless Bummer' is supposed to be a sad song my dude
I got a giant beach boys vibe from White
id give it 9 out of 10. best album since pinkerton
Pinegrove's album Cardinals
Yeah this album is definitely their best in a long time! It takes me back to the blue album all the reasons I actually fell in love with this band along time ago. For sure a solid album 👌
did you just give a weezer album a 9
Who's got those 2016 review scores?
Y'know Rivers wrote the songs base of people he met on tinder. Kinda cool if you ask me.
Who came here after seeing the bigotry in Anthony’s Black Album review?
TGFG sucks. The rest of the album is gold. 9/10. Best Weezer album in a LONG time =w=
+wepeeler Ugh you're the worst kind of weezer fan.
The song just doesn't work.
can you review Azizi Gibson - A New Life ?
This
yes pls
Agreed
I like the album! Very laid back, moody and post-grungy like I like!
U accidentally put a weezer album in the "i love these" playlist.
My only complaint is that it wasn't long enough. I wanted more. It's less of a complaint more of a enjoying it too much for it to end so soon. Like my sex life.
man, Weezer just always makes my heart happy.
I can put on pretty much any old Weezer song and I'll smile and enjoy ... probably even sing along to MOST if not ALL of their peppy beats.
a weezer album that came out in 2016 just got a strong 8 to a light 9. this is gonna be a good year oh boy
I don't get why people don't like Summer Elaine and Drunk Dori. That was easily one of my favorite tracks on the album.
Best to worst:
Do You Wanna Get High?
California Kids
Summer Elaine and Drunk Dori
Endless Bummer
LA Girlz
King of the World
Wind In Our Sail
Jacked Up
(Girl We Got A) Good Thing
Thank God For Girls
I love Jacked Up! It's so different
Thank God For Girls is my favorite on the album
Completely agree with everything said here, where I felt EWBAITE shot for the 90's sound and fell short, this album seemed to combine elements of both later and early weezer to create an excellent record that was long overdue.
"8/10" in the description, come on, we all heard the "strong 8 to a light 9"
it annoys me to hell, but i guess it's more of an 8 than a 9 to him.
Glad you liked it. I think it's one of Weezer's best albums in a while as well.
Endless Summer is "Endless Bummer" Fantano. 2/10 review it again.
