pinkerton was basically the album that resulted after river’s original sophomore album concept, “songs from the black hole” was abandoned. it was supposed to be a space-themed rock opera, but was scrapped after bassist matt sharp released his “return of the rentals” album which stole/borrowed/shared(?) the album’s intended moog/synth-heavy aesthetic. so instead rivers wrote the raw and stripped down pinkerton, in some cases reworking material originally intended for SFTBH. most of the demos of SFTBH have since been released and fans have been able to reconstruct what would’ve been. the album was more musically light-hearted and would’ve had a cleaner production quality, plus a gimmicky, yet creative concept that would have lent itself well to promotion and cheeky music videos. had that album been released instead of pinkerton i think the band’s popularity from the blue album would have continued to grow instead of falling off a cliff, and the trajectory of their career would’ve been drastically different. i can’t help but imagine THAT alternate history.

It's really a shame the reaction to Pinkerton was bad initially, imagine where they'd be now if it had been well received? I would love to have seen Weezer go full gritty emo. Imagine a full album of stuff like their cover of Velouria - could have been awesome.

Yeah Blue is one of those rare moments in rock where the first album is perfect and instantly classic. Every song on that album holds up to this day. Every one. And that in itself is rare. They've been chasing that perfection ever since. Do a Jimmy Eat World best to worst.
Blue is the 2nd album I ever owned, the 1st being Primus - Tales from the Punchbowl. I still consider it flawless, the buildup towards the end of Only in Dreams still gives me goosebumps.
He did Angel and The One so dirty. Also he put green way too high, especially for someone who criticizes them for being too bland. Nice to see White and Hurley get some love though.
Definitely, AaTO is one of my favorite Weezer songs. Really nice to see EWBAITE and White where they are though. Your hunger games video you just released was absolutely hilarious though btw lol.
Angel and the One is kinda boring. Also green is very enjoyable for it's short length, Glorious Day and Island in the Sun are some of my favorite songs from the 2000s

I've decided over the last couple weeks of listening to both Hurley & Raditude a lot that Raditude is decidedly better than Hurley, and in fact Raditude's positives are so high that it must be purchased. (If You're Wondering if I Want You To) I Want You To alone was a high spot for Weezer's entire discography, but then after listening to the album for the first time in many years, I almost picked up on both I Don't Want To Let You Go, and Put Me Back Together and now I'm embarrassed I didn't pick them out the first time I listened to the album. I Don't Want To Let You Go is now one of my very favorite Weezer songs ever. To be fair, I don't like songs like Girl Got Hot, I'm Your Daddy, and Can't Stop Partying, they represent the lowest common denominator of Weezer songs, just like most drug-related songs from other albums like Hash Pipe, Dope Nose, (the exception being White's Do You Want To Get High? which is amazing) and others as well as Beverly Hills. But like I said before, the high points of the album make it decidedly better than Hurley or the Black album IMO. For me the list looks something like: 1: Blue/OK Human 3: White 4: Pinkerton ... ... Last: Black (Would have been Hurley if Black had included what was supposed to be their lead single for the album, Midnight (Cardigan Disaster))
Now that I think about it even Pinkerton was greeted with disappointment by fans. So literally every album Rivers came out with after Blue has been greeted with a negative reaction with the exception of maybe White and EWBAITE. So I can see why he’d want to rebel against his own audience. They were dead wrong about Pinkerton so maybe he thought we were dead wrong about all the other records.
I’d say there was a SHARP withdrawal of vulnerability after the backlash to Pinkerton. Coupled with a defensiveness and imo a certain blindness. The podcast Bandsplain does a great Weezer episode that goes into this
So... I met my wife at a Weezer concert between Pinkerton and the green album. I’ve always felt like they were a special band because of that... but Make Believe was the last album I bought. I did go back and listen to some of their stuff last year, but the only things that stood out to me were the parts you talked about on Everything Will Be Alright in the End. I’ve made peace with the fact that I am a cliche and continue to listen to the first two albums and various tracks off of other albums.
Tha Swami I would honestly put Pinkerton on a similar level in terms of influence in its respective genre. But that’s the thing: Pinkerton is not a hip-hop record. It’s a rock record. So I don’t see a point in comparing it to College Dropout, Madvillainy, etc.

I've decided over the last couple weeks of listening to both Hurley & Raditude a lot that Raditude is decidedly better than Hurley, and in fact Raditude's positives are so high that it must be purchased. (If You're Wondering if I Want You To) I Want You To alone was a high spot for Weezer's entire discography, but then after listening to the album for the first time in many years, I almost picked up on both I Don't Want To Let You Go, and Put Me Back Together and now I'm embarrassed I didn't pick them out the first time I listened to the album. I Don't Want To Let You Go is now one of my very favorite Weezer songs ever.
To be fair, I don't like songs like Girl Got Hot, I'm Your Daddy, and Can't Stop Partying, they represent the lowest common denominator of Weezer songs, just like most drug-related songs from other albums like Hash Pipe, Dope Nose, (the exception being White's Do You Want To Get High? which is amazing) and others as well as Beverly Hills. But like I said before, the high points of the album make it decidedly better than Hurley or the Black album IMO.
For me the list looks something like:

Now that I think about it even Pinkerton was greeted with disappointment by fans.
So literally every album Rivers came out with after Blue has been greeted with a negative reaction with the exception of maybe White and EWBAITE. So I can see why he’d want to rebel against his own audience.
They were dead wrong about Pinkerton so maybe he thought we were dead wrong about all the other records.
I’d say there was a SHARP withdrawal of vulnerability after the backlash to Pinkerton. Coupled with a defensiveness and imo a certain blindness. The podcast Bandsplain does a great Weezer episode that goes into this

So... I met my wife at a Weezer concert between Pinkerton and the green album. I’ve always felt like they were a special band because of that... but Make Believe was the last album I bought. I did go back and listen to some of their stuff last year, but the only things that stood out to me were the parts you talked about on Everything Will Be Alright in the End. I’ve made peace with the fact that I am a cliche and continue to listen to the first two albums and various tracks off of other albums.
