Though St Anger is considered the worst it brought us one of the greatest rockumentaries ever made, and I respect the band for allowing the world to see a bunch of egotistical millionaires at their low point.
Yeah, they were pretty shitty people to each other at that point, but the making of St. Anger was what got them over it, and without that record, we probably wouldn't have Metallica anymore. Their legacy would have ended with Load and Reload, and despite the fact that I like those albums, that would not be a very fitting end to Metallica's career.
The most heartbreaking thing about St. Anger is that it should’ve been their return to glory. Over a year of internal conflict and overcoming personal demons, James going to rehab, everyone clashing as they try to find the magic they once had... I mean, coupled with the really good documentary Some Kind of Monster, this should’ve been a renaissance album. But it just... fell really flat instead. It’s a damn shame.
St. Anger is made all the more frustrating because not only SHOULD it have been better, it clearly COULD have. There are sketches of legitimately great Metallica tracks on there...Sweet Amber, Unnamed Feeling, All Within My Hands...parts of those songs are genuinely incredible, they're just so bloated and aimless. The production is terrible, the drums sound god-awful, the whole "no solos" mandate was just moronic...just mistake after boneheaded mistake. Had they used what's on the record as a starting point, refined the hell out of the songs, added some damn solos, and cut a good 2-3 minutes off each track it could have been one of their best.
If you find renditions of the songs that fix the obnoxious snare drum and poor production it's really not *that* bad of an album --- some hits, some misses, but I find myself actually enjoying it overall when it has the polish it deserves. Of course better polish on the sound doesn't change the fact it's overall a failed experiment on Metallica's part, that came off the heels of their most popular era. If James was in better shape and the band undergoing less turbulence overall I agree that maybe St. Anger could have been the kick-off to a new creative era for them, but unfortunately they were in no position to make the next Master of Puppets or Black Album, so now here we are. At least we got "Frantic."
Back then St. Anger was the first metal album I ever listened to and without the context of everything they did before it was a really cathartic experience to hear it. Because of that to this day I hold the album in high regard even if their 80s run up until the Black Album ended up overshadowing it when I became more familiar with their history. It has a place, an important one for me at least and I think that it was significant to many teenagers of the early 2000s in that way. Which is not to say that it became a classic but that the very distinct sound it had resonated with me and among all the well-deserved criticism it got and still gets there are fans out there who appreciate its existence.
Actually I think it’s one of the bands whose albums are ranked very similarly by its fans. Regardless of your personal preference Master of Puppets is undeniably their best album, closely followed by Ride the Lightning and the Black Album. The black album is more influential than great if that makes sense. The black album introduced many people including myself to not only Metallica but metal in general
You are totally right. It's a great metal record for "beginners" if you know what I mean. Like, it is pretty heavy, it has catchy riffs, great vocals and lyrics, great solos, all of the good stuff that metal has to offer, but at the same time it's much more tight and "clean" than their early stuff. There isn't as many instrumental parts, songs usually aren't too long, have only one solo etc. Thrash metal isn't the easiest entrance to heavy music, you need to be already used to the sound of heavy stuff to enjoy that complicated and technical style of Justice or Master. Black Album on the other hand has songs like Wherever I May Roam or Enter Sandman that are great examples of how simple can be stronger. And I could easily play The Unforgiven or Nothing Else Matters to my classmates and the would like it.
@@Eris_Norregard Saying that more accessible is less good, like he claims. Black Albums song writing, melodies, production etc. blow most parts of the old thrash stuff out of the water. Just because it's less technical or more accessible doesn't mean that it's anywhere less good, as he was saying, dude.
@@DropkickNation Yeah, I agree with you on that. I don't think he meant what he said in a bad way though. When he said it's "more influential than great", I think he was simply pointing out the fact that just because it's the most to the general public known metal album, it doesn't make it the best metal album. Or that's the way I understood it.
I always thought MOP was the best because of its atmosphere but recently I listened to both again and I enjoyed RTL better. The drumming on MOP sounds really terrible at times, the lyrics are stupid and the slower songs (like Sanitarium) gets boring.

10:18 The guitars fade out, to be replaced by the pounding of drums, which explode into an earthquake of power cords. This sudden replacement of mood shows the abruptness of Cliff’s death, and the anger that the band feels towards its injustice.

I looked at a RUclips video of black album full and I remember reading Through the river there too. It wasn't until I actually listened to the song that I found out it's called Through the never
Wait, there is a lack of ideas or interesting performances on AJFA?..One, Blackened, Harvester of Sorrow, Shortest Straw, To Live is to Die....these are all uninteresting and tepid material to you?
Cypress Grove I love Broken Beat And scarred and All Nightmare Long and The day that never comes. I do wish the album was recorded a little heavier though. The recording sounded a bit hollow but I still like those songs
It's got some great tracks. The Day That Never Comes and All Nightmare Long are the obvious standouts, and idk why Broken Beat & Scarred doesn't get talked about at all.
I loved DM I remember sitting in a car listening to a radio station because they were going to have the first play of a song off the album. They played Day that never comes. My dad and I went crazy because we were so scared they would go for more like St anger lol.
Kill em all they were figuring it out. Lightning, they had it like 90% figured out. Puppets nailed it. Justice may not flow together as a whole as seamlessly as puppets but it's their technical peak and some of their best song writing. The riffs/lyrics are incredible. You really can't lose with any of those first four albums. There is a lot to like about the black album too but to rank it ahead of Justice is criminal.
As many here, I would rank "And Justice for all" a lot higher (certainly in the top 3). It is their most progressive album. I've listened to it a million times and it never gets boring. The riffs, the breaks and the solos are great. The production is a matter of taste. I love the super percussive, super tight, extremely clean sound, and, to be honest, I never missed the bass until I read everywhere that it needs more bass. The sound is indeed flatter and not as heavy as the sound on "Master of Puppets" or the Black Album, but many progressive arrangements probably wouldn't have sounded that good with such a fat and heavy sound.
I just don't get it. I think other than death magnetic, and justice for all has the most filler of any other Metallica album tbh. It has some fantastic moments that really stand out but overall I think it's one of their least consistent albums, the drums are probably the most consistently great parts to it but I think every single song was drug out so much longer than it had to be - I mean damn dude did they really need to double down on repeating 2 part choruses like 10 times every song? They had already done it too much on master of puppets, I love disposable heroes and pepper messiah but god damn they drug those out with choruses we didn't need to hear so much. AJFA was them doubling down on that and going way way worse with it in my opinion. If they'd have cut out a lot of the filler I'd agree that it's great but they really stretched it out in a really lazy way IMHO. (The lack of bass makes it even worse to me because it makes it sound like a demo. It's passable in terms of listenability for me since I am mainly a guitarist but I love bass as an instrument and I can't help but wonder how much more interesting the album could've been if it had bass throughout actually because a lot of times the interesting chord changes and harmonies are made much better depending on how the bass is interacting with it. Not having bass on a thrash album kind of wrecks it in my opinion because the guitars tend to be doing simple chords so much, 80% of it is either power chords via 5ths or 4ths and that on it's own is not sonically interesting - the bass is what adds the extra layer to the chords and the rest of the music because whatever extended parts there are to the guitar's power chord is played on the bass. I just don't get any of it man, there was a lot of potential on AJFA but I think they all stabbed themselves in the foot with how they went about it.
I was about to write it down when I read your comment... CHEEZUZ FREEKYN' KRAYZT!!! Is this guys serious?!?!?! ¨Through The River"?!?!?!? OMFG!!! When I heard him say it, I just gave up on the whole video...
To Live is to Die is great!! You definitely did not get the symbolism on the song... It represents their experience with Cliff Burton, how they enjoyed being with him and were mad with anger when he died and then they mourned him and remembered his life.
I agree with basically all of this, but Ride The Lightning will always be my favorite. I know I’m in the minority with that but it’s such a fast, raw, amazing album.
I love The Day That Never Comes. I remember getting so hyped to that shit. I think the reason I loved it is because I wasn't attached to their older sound or songs. I listened to this on a clean slate. I need to give it a listen, it's been a while.
Still kicks ass. I don’t get the comparison that it sounds like a worse version of The Unforgiven at all. One? Maybe could see the comparison between those two, but definitely not the Unforgiven lmao

i absolutely give them a chance. i think load and reload are better than the black album, personally. the black album feels forced, lazy in parts, and unauthentic. which isn't surprising, considering it was their first album with Bob Rock. A man who openly wanted to make them more popular and mainstream. they struggled hard with him in the studio and the tracks feel like a facsimile of what a more popular sounding metallica should sound like. even though load and reload are very different in tone from previous work, they both feel much more fresh and energetic than the black album and i think are pretty solid rock albums. the reason some people got their feathers rustled with his AJFA comments come from him praising the black album so heavily and shitting all over and justice. his comments don't really make sense unless you only care about album sales.
I think my personal list would go like 1. And Justice for All 2. Ride the Lighting 3. Master of Puppets 4. The Black Album 5. Kill'em all 6. Death Magnetic 7. Load / Reload 8. St Anger I haven't listened to Hardwired to self destruct or 72 seasons yet
AJFA was recorded in 4 months. At some times, the producers copied and placed Hetfields vocal lines from a different segment of a song to another segment because they didn't have the time to record more vocal lines. They mostly came up with the riffs while touring. Recording took 4 months, releasing the album took another 4 months and even though harsh conditions, they wrote songs that become legend in metal history. Yes its not perfect production-wise, but it has a unique sound and style to it.
My Rankings: 1. ...And Justice for All 2. Ride the Lightning 3. Master of Puppets 4. Kill em All 5. Black Album 6. Death Magnetic 7. 72 Seasons 8. Hardwired to Self Destruct 9. Garage inc. 10. Load 11. Reload 12. St. Anger
Damn Melon, That AJFA take is legit one of the worst i've ever heard. Never once got the impression they were "Running out of ideas" As i would argue its them at their most creative tbh. Musically its far and away their most technical and progressive album to date, And lyrically i believe its peak James. Blackened, AJFA, One, Harvester Of Sorrow & Dyers Eve are some of the deepest, Rawest songs he's written. I think Lars is at his absolute best here, And id say the riffs on this album are easily some of their best as well. Overall despite the lack of bass and somewhat brittle production, I think musically its every bit as good and in some spots arguably better than the rest of their 80's material.
I've also noticed that a lot of Master of Puppets tracks are about manipulation in some way. Like a puppet being manipulated. Also, I personally really like the transitions in To Live Is To Die. I feel like it represents just how quickly the stages of mourning occur
As a Non Metallica Fan, I respect a lot of their work. That being said, Until it Sleeps is the forgotten great single for the band in my opinion. So forgotten that you just reminded me it exists, but man what a fuckin song
Really close between MoP. But i will still choose AJFA. Riffs, Solo, Lyrics and metallica's musical technicality really at it's peak. Plus Hetfield's voice on every AJFA song really puts dagger in every album they had made.
Ajfa would have been great if they didn't sound so dull and lifeless, they didn't try to innovate anything and focused more on pushing out a couple great riffs prematurely. It's got some of my favorite songs of all time but I wouldnt put them above 4 just because of how poorly produced it is, and that doesn't mean just the lack of bass.
Ride the lightning is by favorite Metallica álbum, but the strange thing is that most of my top ten favorite Metallica songs are from the "And justice for all" such as eye of the beholder, harvester of sorrow, one, blackend, dyers Eve, frayed end of satinity.

Just because the music is aggressive doesn’t mean it can’t be melodic or complicated, get educated.

@@Eris_Norregard Which makes zero sense in connection to what he claims.
@@DropkickNation What exactly makes zero sense?
I prefer Ride The Lightning over Master Of Pupets because it has a nicer tone.
same, ride the lightning is definitely their tightest and most succinct work
I always thought MOP was the best because of its atmosphere but recently I listened to both again and I enjoyed RTL better. The drumming on MOP sounds really terrible at times, the lyrics are stupid and the slower songs (like Sanitarium) gets boring.

Death magnetic: easily the most UNDERRATED album. Broken beat & scared, All nightmare long, That was just your life, all bangers.
Cypress Grove I love Broken Beat And scarred and All Nightmare Long and The day that never comes. I do wish the album was recorded a little heavier though. The recording sounded a bit hollow but I still like those songs

Yeah I'd probably have it as #3 or maybe even #2 behind Master of Puppets

Why are you assuming they didn't give them a chance??? I did. Yep, they are not better than the first 4.
i absolutely give them a chance. i think load and reload are better than the black album, personally. the black album feels forced, lazy in parts, and unauthentic. which isn't surprising, considering it was their first album with Bob Rock.

I think Lars is at his absolute best here, And id say the riffs on this album are easily some of their best as well.
