Yeah, this song is absolutely a trip. Most of their albums have at least one weird, proggy atmospheric "trip" track like this. When you listen to the whole album from start to finish, in the right "state of mind" (with or without substances), this track can take you places. well, it blew my teenaged mind, anyway when the album first came out, whatever that's worth. I agree that this sort of experience isn't an every day playlist sort of thing- it's a "laying down with headphones in the dark" track.

  • @americanhwyflower

I saw Tool live 5 times between 2007 and 2016 and every time, I prayed to The gods of prog that they would play this song. And on the 5th time they fucking opened with it! Such an amazing band to see live and vibe with tens of thousands of likeminded people to.
This song, along with basically all of Lateralus, really opened me up to Progressive rock and metal and paved the way to me finding stuff like Opeth and Between The Buried And Me.
I’m glad you listened to it and enjoyed parts of it, even if it didn’t make the playlist for you.
Edit - cause I commented before getting to the very end, Eulogy is also my favorite on the album. It really straddles the line between the more formulaic, verse/chorus structured songs, and their really progressive stuff like this. Absolute Toolishness.

Stinkfist, Eulogy, H., 46 & 2, Hooker With A Penis, Jimmy, Pushit, Aenema, not in that order. That would be difficult to figure out. I'm too indecisive to pick favorites. "Third Eye!" You heard it! WELCOME TO THE NEXT LEVEL!
"Third Eye" is a strange and unique song in the Tool catalog, and one of the reasons I think you might've had the reaction you had is because you weren't listening to a "song," per se.
This song IS more evidence than almost any other song they have that the band's collective mind has its own compositional intention that strongly and freely ignores what any one member attempts to make it do or be.
By compositional standards that highlight individual contributions, this piece does NOT work.
It's structured in such a way that the piece freely makes use of individual musical attributes that would normally distract or detract from compositional cohesion - and yet, somehow, the piece as a whole moves and shines in ways that many other pieces of music just can NOT.
In short, this piece of music is the largest evidence available that there is a fifth member of the band, and that member's name is TOOL. It takes the virtue of that assumption and amplifies it for anyone to hear. You can actually hear the line blurring between individual contributions and a group mind gestalt at work and this piece opens up all the secret hatches so that you can see and hear that engine at work.
And you cannot step away from that view - hearing the music does not allow any intentional ignorance of that view to stand.
And that's why it sounds the way it does. To some of us, anyway. 🤓
I consider this piece more of a blueprint of the group mind at work than just a piece of music, and I think that's what makes it unique. And I think a lot of people might agree, if they thought of it from that perspective.
I was so glad to hear it through YOUR ears. Thank you!
    Respectfully,
    Jesse

As I gradually heard it in the background it grew more and more on me until now it is my second favourite on the album after pushit.
