- Reaction includes (-) Ions. It's the end of our journey through Ænima album. Next week we will be listening to A Perfect Circle - Judith.
We are also considering making videos more often. Thanks for watching.
Third Eye is very psychedelic and cathartic. It smacks you in the head at the start with the Bill Hicks quotes where he's talking about "wouldn't it be nice if the news reported on positive LSD stories...today a man on acid realized that life is but a dream and we are the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the weather." If you have had psychedelic experiences the feeling of this song is very familiar. Overwhelming, anxious, pulsing, weird, weirdly familiar, comforting, terrifying, beautiful, love. The Third Eye is often just the ability to 'see spiritually' or to 'focus your thoughts onto the internal.' You forget your normal human life and are absorbed into an inner world of meaning. Some people can get there with meditation in a slow controlled way, but in this song, its clear he is prying his eye open with force. So the drug/chemical/medicine is forcing him to see it.
He says he reaches his hand into his shadow and we have been seeing these Jungian references the whole album. He says he pulls the pieces from the sand. So he's pulling up repressed feelings, and experiences. He tries to reassemble them but can't recognize the person he was when those experiences happened. It's too removed, and foreign. He has grown and changed since then. But he recognizes something that is a constant through line to his current self (the eyes seem so familiar). Phosphorescent desert buttons is a reference to peyote I would guess.
A lot of the lyrics seem to alternate perspectives between adult Maynard and inner child Maynard. "Came out to watch you play, why are you running away" You see the different takes of leaving. In one case the child is asking where you went and why you left, on the other the adult is asking where you went and why. But its all the same person. So there is a reconciliation and reintegration necessary.
And as these states of mind tend to go, there is an understanding that compared to what really matters, our life that we pay so much attention to is just a dream. All the great fortunes and great pains are just stories. When you have one of these experiences it hits you with the realization that the things we worry about so much, the pains we feel, ultimately have no power but what we grant them just the same as the events of a nightmare. You'll wake and nothing in life has actually changed or been harmed. Quite cathartic.
You are going to love the next album. Lateralus is by far my favorite. It picks up these budding ideas/concepts and runs with them.
Third Eye is my favorite Tool track. Such a journey. Set up with movements like a classic symphony. Just a beautiful song.
I think -ions is pronounced Negative Ions
Third Eye... Get your popcorn people! 🤯🤯
Just found you. Hey, don't listen to people on here telling you Tool isn't for you. I've been a fan from the beginning. The band are just great musicians with great lyrics. There is nothing hidden or too deep about them. Maynard's a good lyricist, and he likes poking fun and trolling people. You keep on it if you like them. Some Tool fans think there is code, prophecy, or revelation in every syllable. They are, pardon me here...tools. Great channel by the way.
Initum you are going to love APC. You'll also love PUSCIFER. Maynard's harmonies with Corina are amazing.
I call Tool "musical dadaism" where the band looks for music in the mundane and then wrap lyrics and melody around that found music (e.g. Eulogy, the coke bottles that set down the beat at the beginning). And 3rd Eye (and all the other secret tracks) make healthy use of integrating mundane sounds into the percussion section. It's one of my favorite things about the music these geniuses make.
Somebody walked into the room as I was watching another person listen to an electrical storm on their headphones. They were like uhhh what are you doing 🤣🤣🤣
i cant wait for the next albums! im so excited for you!!!
It's funny because Bill Hicks was an amazing catalyst for my own personal growth. He was what drew me to Tool in the first place, as a kid. And what's special about both Hicks and Tool is they make you think. In Hicks' case, being from Texas he had access to the southern (more conservative, "blue" comedy) circuit. For a lot of us, I think, he sort of snuck under the radar and made us really examine ourselves as a culture. ruclips.net/video/cvz9uSK3zXo/видео.html
Kinda weird for me. I stumbled on Bill Hicks via my love of comedy well after discovering Tool. Hicks has lead to way more interesting places than Tool. Dont misunderstand that. Where to you go from Tool? But for Hicks, you discover confrontational/independent thought via sooooo many comedic public commentaries. Pryor, Carlin, Hicks, Burr, Stanhope etc. Hicks passed away at 32. We only got an inkling of what he had to give us.
This is an ode to psychedelics.
Seems like you prefer the longer songs they have. Fortunately, the rest of the albums deliver on that more than what you've seen thus far.
Tool's instrumental pieces always have a purpose. Several of them can be viewed as "palate cleansers" that separate the next song structurally, thematically from the preceding song. I think (-) Ions (I call it "anions", which simply means "negative ions" to people like me with chemistry degrees -- among others) is largely such a palate cleanser, since Aenema and Third Eye are structurally and thematically quite different. But, if you listen to the album in full, (-) Ions also gives the listener some time to digest what was discussed in Aenema. In that sense, (-) Ions is almost a coda for Aenema as sounds of the nature that is seen reclaiming California provides much of the start (-) Ions. While it may have been an accident in its creation, the inclusion was deliberate.
Several of Tool's songs can be thought of as parts of sets. Tool provides "interludes" such as (-) Ions to separate some of those sets from other pieces ... but not always. Some are introductions or contextual prefaces. You will eventually get to 10,000 Days with the sequence Lipan Conjuring, Lost Keys (Blame Hofmann) and Rosetta Stoned, which comprise a set. Lipan Conjuring implies the introduction of DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine), Lost Keys the resulting psycho-medical event and Rosetta Stoned the hallucinogenic experience and effects. This puts a bit more context around (-) Iona, I think, as both separating Aenema from Third Eye, but still being related directly to Aenema.
This all goes back to Intermission, which is clearly linked to Jimmy, but also serves as a palate cleanser following Hooker with a Penis.
As I said, Tool's instrumental pieces always have a purpose. Figuring out what the purpose is is the fun part, though I don't believe anyone will get it all right without a good deal of discussion on the topic from the members of Tool.
The statement "this song was a spiritual experience" makes me wish I could like this video a thousand times.
On the next album btw you have to do the "holy trinity" In order dispositions, reflection, and triad. Great video btw, watched the entire thing. Third is probably my all time favorite tool song, hard to say.
I would agree that those 3 songs should be listened to together.👍
I always thought this was another throw away track like - ions or intermission because it’s just Bill Hicks talking and a little noise at the beginning so I always skipped it to start the album over.
Then I did acid for the first time at 16 and right when it started to get good and heavy my brother played this album and I started peaking right as this song started. So I actually heard it the first time while peaking on my first acid trip and first psychedelic experience ever.
Talk about intense, man. I was not the same person after that.
I'm very much looking forward to you getting their "fear inoculum" album
They grow so much as a band
Also, i love your voices in my ear... So pleasant
Negative ions on headphones with the electricity jumping through your brain. I remember the first time I listened to it and it was the first time I ever considered playing with the left and right balance to make a song or intermission even more intense. Aenema will always be a favorite album of mine up there with Deftones White Pony. Those were the days.
PS. Listening to this song for over twenty years (Third Eye) and I’ve never looked at the lyrics or knew what he was saying on the whispering bridge. Such an amazing track. Tool is one of those bands that gets better the more you listen. Truly masterful.
The Toolest of all Tool songs.
Disagree, it's what I think Maynard wanted tool to be, it's the most avant garde tool song by far
Out of all these reaction videos I’ve never seen your mate that you keep talking to you it would be nice to see him in one of your videos
It's just most TOOL song in all Tool discography. I mean if you really get this song - you get the Tool. Thanks for video, I like it
Love your reaction. You have so much more Tool to go. Spiral out, but take your time. And the dude guiding her through this 🤘 awesome job, you're like the perfect acid guide. Thank you both ❤
- ion, is a fitting title for the first. To me it sounds like a Jocob's ladder turned on its side with the arc moving from the left to right.
Third eye is a journey. Even without lyrics you can sense what they're trying to convey. Fantastic composition.
I greatly enjoy your videos, interpretations and discussions. Always interesting to get other people's perspective. All the best to you.
Don't listen to drooling elitist tool fans. Keep doing what you're doing, was nice experiencing it with ya
Third Eye - Salival Edition is epic .
Great reaction. Buckle up, it's quite a ride from here on out. I think videos 2 or 3 times a week would be a nice pace. Have fun and be safe.
You guys are awesome!! Seriously one of the best reaction channels on RUclips! 😊😊
The storm sound effect seems to be a Thunder Sheet, as used in stage productions to produce storm scenes. It's simply a thin sheet of metal shaken and waved to produce that dramatic audio effect.
While I haven't contemplated the titles meaning, I might suggest, given the storm sounds, and the electricity sound effect, that you consider the massive electrical fields that are responsible for lightning storms; these electric field causes the surrounding air to become separated into positive ions and electrons, ionizing the air and promoting lightning events, leaving us with negative (not minus) ions. Introducing negative ions is known to reduce particulate mater (PM) in the air, or, clear the air. Further, though not scientifically proven, there is much supposition that negative ions positively effect human health, including an activating influence on human cognition. Both are reasonable meanings for the title, -ions, particularly given the subject of the song it leads into.
This song definitely always made me think of DMT trips
3 tokes away there is a place you cant even begin to imagine.... and there are things there... and the place feels more real than real life, and it feels like home.... Terence Mckenna spoke to monks about DMT and they were telling him its the Lesser Lights.... as close to the other side as you can get and still come back.... fun to think about.... but DMT is crazy...i get nervous everytime i do it
Pretty sure it is supposed to be read as negative ions. But who am I to tell someone else how to read. Glad you liked it.
Great job. I am enjoying your journey. Really neat analysis of 3rd eye both of you.
I'm looking forward to the future
I see ions as a break, a rest from the music. Then I realized it's all Danny banging on metal, and there's a rhythm to it, & it IS music, very much so. I've been hit by lightning so, I love the electronic sounds.
Negative ions could be referring to the alleged mood boosting effects that negative ions have for the brain. Furthermore, the whole electricity theme in the context of the brain functions is a nice thematic segway into third eye, which in a materialistic framework can be thought of as an electrical event in the brain.
Another great video! I’ve been trying to refrain from being a typical “male” but I gush over this lady during every video ❣️
Anyone else wanna know who the 1 dislike is besides me? These TOOL reactions are genuinely EPIC AS FUCK! Keep Doing it! Looks like LATERALUS is next!
I did way to much acid in the 90's to this album. And I dont regret it.
If only my first eye could be opened, or 46 n 2 could be just ahead of me...maybe i will learn to swim...buddy!
Ahhhhnema. Ænema. Heard him pronounce it on a radio interview.
Third eye just means, the eye that looks within. Any drug that kills the ego will put you in this state. It can also be done without drugs, much quicker with drugs though.
In my opinion 7empest is an extension of Third Eye... It’s worth listening back-2-back.
You mean Chocolate chip trip? ;-)
The next album is Salival. It starts where Aenima ends - Third Eye live version which is in my opinion waaaaaay better than studio version.
This just might be my favorite Tool song
top five for sure
While I find it an exercise in futility to choose a favourite Tool song, choosing a favourite album is easy. Lateralus as a whole is simply amazing and will probably always be my favourite. I look forward to your reaction very much.
Strangely, while listening to this album on a high dose of psilocybin, ions made me connect with the album even more so than any other song aside from Third Eye. I felt disconnected from the annoyances of humanity but extremely connected to the earth while listening to it. It was weird but that memory sticks with me to this day.
This song on the surface could classify Tool as a "pro-active psychedelic drug band". But I am convinced that in reality, it is the opposite. Third Eye is like their "try hard" song. Someone who experienced a trip with psychedelic substances that showed him a supposed "substantial truth", and is now so desperate to see and experience that truth again, but now every time he tries again it seems that that "truth" is always running away from him, and then, the journey turns into something dark and deceiving. It doesn't take long to him to realize that this "truth" is in fact something that you already knew all this time, so then he stop chasing the tail of Dogma. This is (the Dogma) as well, as the false religious teachings, as well as the false promise to "open your third eye" through the use of some kind of external substance, based on what a good comedian friend told about a young man who once he tried drugs and discovered in them the meaning of the universe.
It's an interesting take on it, but hard to reconcile with the rest of their discography.
That's an interesting take, and some credence is lent to it my MJK's quote regarding people taking of certain drugs: "People just taking the chemicals and diving in without having any kind of preparation about what they're about to experience tend to have no frame of reference, so they're missing everything flying by and all these new perspectives. It's just a waste. They reach a little bit of spiritual enlightenment, but they end up going, 'Well, now I need that drug to get back there again.' The trick is to use the drugs once to get there, and maybe spend the next ten years trying to get back there without the drug."
The lyrics can certainly be interpreted as you describe esp regarding the "I came down to watch you play/ why are you running away" with the "you" being that supposed "truth" first glimpsed but misunderstood. Some drugs can definitely enforce that kind of...dependency, and the environment can either amplify or diminish the message. Everyone's experience is different, but with LSD, I never found that it projected upon me any external truths, but rather that it cleared away so many built-up facades and questionable assumptions, allowing instead for finding truths within oneself authentically and honestly.
@@johnseward2934 Similar experience with LSD. I tend not to use it for that reason. Mushrooms on the other hand...
24:55. Wow, how that voice works a laugh, then pauses, then gives quarter to an opinion she finds valid, all the while the voice is steady and constant, while eliciting intelligent confidence. Remarkable. The US it seems, has only yelling, or crying, no matter the situation.
Third Eye is my favorite song on Æ.
I’m an electrician so I always thought of it as “negative” ions.
It is. Our bad, we don't really use word ion, negative or positive much :)
@@initum1599 thats the thing...it may be negative OR minus. It's all in interpretation. I may only think negative simply because ive thought of ions that way for so long because of my profession whereas your tendency is to think of the word minus for a different reason. Both or neither may be wrong or right.
@@4NoRaisin hello from Sacramento Cali!
Third Eye dropped!
Than you again the both of you
39:47. Nice moment. So sweet. I know there is so much more. I hope you both continue to do this with this band. All the best.
This song has enough imagery for 1000 paintings
Negative ions
42:42. I always love the thought given to an inquiry. It’s beautiful, and elegant. Thoughtfulness is a great thing in any age. This one, perhaps, especially.
Thank you
How many other people think this is the best song ever ?!
In the whole world idgaf what anyone else has to say
The beginning storms part is Danny beating on a huge sheet of metal
31:31. She was being coy, but she really understands, I think, the transformative effects this song has to offer.
We are 1. The earth is 1. Humanity is 1. If you're hurt, so am I. When I hurt, so does every1. We are individuals but, we are all just parts of the whole. A car has many parts but, it's all 1 car. So it is with humanity. I am I & you are you but, together we are we, you & I. Nothing can defeat what is United but, a house divided cannot stand
I think in a lot of ways, Third Eye is Maynerd's mangum opus.
35:00. I believe the writer of the song was going for exactly this, and yet again, this is why she is the star of this channel. Not just a pretty face, there are brains in that skull.
37:20. I have not thought of it that way before. Nice out of the box, stuff. Still, until today, I have never seen the lyrics, and, yet again, I was wrong on a great many. So, here’s the deal. You have listened to this one time, with lyrics. One time. Hopefully, in the future you will listen to it again. It’s my favorite song they have done.
I think alot of people refer to your third eye as your pineal gland in your brain . Pine Away :p
I'd like to see you read Maynard's book after you complete the discology and then go back and listen to it again. And see you in that "ah ha!" moment. Lol. Talk about opening up your eyes....
Maynard’s book?
@@UbiDoobyBanooby yes, he has a book.
Exactly, I always tell people the same. Better yet, get the audiobook version. Maynard voices the side bars himself.
Please remember Salival. Google it.
I love how maynard´s screaming feels way more haunting, intense, and terrifying than any of those death metal vocalists...
uusaid in description youll do Judith , YES!!
(-Ions), was made using a metal house for sale sign. Manipulated in the studio, after it was recorded.
nO SONG SOUNDED LIKE THIS SONG BEFORE , and hasnt sounded like it after. - This song is an experience./
21:00. I use to have this album/cd playing nonstop in my pickup truck for at least a year, and no matter what, you couldn’t skip a song, and you couldn’t go back, but I always skipped the interludes. I hated them.
Because of the panning of the channels in -ion I always felt like it was charging or stimulating my brain, from left to right to left, etc... (Of course with headphones)
I say this is 1 of their top 5 songs, for sure, if I HAD to choose. Disposition is way up there. Lateralus is awesome. Pneuma is their #1 song, in my mind. Reflection gets #2 in my mind.
Sooooo many other songs to mention. I'm sure your list is full for now tho
H, Jambi, Opiate. Sober, 46 n 2....it's all good!
Yes!!!!
39:10. Dude. Say thanks, or right on, or something to acknowledge the star of the show just gave you a big compliment. Come, on , man!
There was a video in my ads. lol
Hey, thanks for info, can you tell more what that ad was? We don't want obtrusive ads so we'll have a look to turn them off. Was the ad in the middle of the video?
Install "AdGuard" Ad blocker in your browser. No more ads on you tube. Doesn't work on the youtube app on ios though.
When your eyes close, then you can see the song
37:56. Nice brain activity. Nice save.
There’s nothing on this album put there by accident. Maybe the spark of the new transformation, or something to that effect. Just my opinion though.
In my opinion nothing from TOOL is by accident.
Tex Garrett That’s what I said dude.
2 eyes closed
3rd eye open
You loved it. How long b4 you had to hear it again?
This song is undoubtedly inspired by Carlos Castaneda’s early writings.
I'll tell you what this version and the version on salival. In my opinion if you don't get this song which ever version it is you're probably not going to understand tool but that's alright you will
37:37. This reminds me of an aspect neither of you have touched upon. The vocals are clearly talking to someone. They are telling someone something. To me, this is a giant part of the song, and, until now, there has been no mention of this interaction.
23:33. Well, I think dude got it right. It’s not a contest.
34:22. The guy lost the analogy. The atoms that make up us are tiny universes, and so we are also in a universe of an atom inside something else. That’s the analogy. I have yet to land on any conclusion, personally.
It helps to watch Bill Hicks after a bit of cannabis!
This song is incredible. I absolutely love the intro with the Bill Hicks quotes. Rather than me try to give a deep dive analysis of this song, this video here does a much better job than I can going over the song ruclips.net/video/-qJClzs2ce4/видео.html. I highly recommend watching the video sometime if you'd like to get more analysis on Third Eye.
I'm holding out hope that you will react to the song Divorced by Tool & Melvins soon. I'll be thrilled if you do haha but no worries if you don't. Keep up the good work :)
Hello ladies. Stormy waters at your service
Thank you. I'll definetely watch it but I wonder whether I should hold on and watch it after I heard Third Eye (live) from Salival - I'd be grateful for hearing your opinion on this.
She.
@@initum1599 I don't believe it would make a difference one way or another if you waited; personally I think it might make revisiting it in the live version more interesting as you would have a deeper understanding of the lyrics, which is primarily what the video I linked focuses on. The video also makes some comments with regards to other songs like Parabola, 46 & 2, Reflection, and Pneuma but doesn't really go into any analysis of these songs. More specifically it calls on the other areas of Tool's music that have made reference to the thing which Third Eye explores in full. Parabola's music video and the 10,000 Days album cover, for example, are connected to everything presented in the song Third Eye.
38:40. Dang, she is kicking in overdrive. So, cool, so sexy. I love it. And still, that steady voice, just telling it like it is. Amazing.
I know it looks like minus ions but its actually Negative ions.
39:20. Great point.
You’re right on the money, honey.
45:00. Right on.
The salival album version to THIRD EYE is way better
I disagree.
Salival Edition of third Eye is Legendary
@@wendellpruitt3169 I still like the album version better. Just a matter of taste.
@@MilkHound well good for you .
35:35. Well, that’s different.
41:41. I am still wondering why there is no mention to the obvious one sided conversation between the singer, and a mystery person that they have known. It doesn’t matter if its himself, a friend, a mentor, an enemy, a lover. It’s something, and neither of you ever mention that aspect. It’s puzzling to me.
I always took the mystery person to be his subconscious mind.
Avante Garde Tool
awwww you looked so sad when it is over..... the realization that the whole album is over....... on the other hand, there are more albums :)
Check out DMT in the effects it has on terminal cancer patients and then the meaning of this song might be different for you
I wish it was SubscribeStar.com. i despise Patreon.
As a very hard core Tool fan I couldn't help myself but to watch this video. I tried my best to see your genuine reaction to it but i really felt that you can't connect to them, and that's ok as they need a lot of time to get to their multiple layers. Unfortunately I had to stop the video the moment you said you haven't been able to click with Bill Hicks as he is the centre piece of this album, especially the song Aenema, actually this album has been inspired by and dedicated to Bill following his death in 94. Bill and Maynard got very close and had a lot in common with each other. I think (-) Ions is pronounced negative Ions. I got a bit frustrated tho hearing that (-) Ions might be on the album by accident as this guys don't do accidents. They really take their time with their music and it is only released when it is perfect, and what you are hearing is simply perfect.
I'm not even starting about the music itself as i have been playing this song ( and album) on the guitar for many years now. My apologies tho about the long defensive text but when it comes to Tool, and i'm sure every hard core Tool fan out there, are very sensitive.
Cheers
No offense taken, I really appreciate your honesty
She.
"My apologies tho about the long defensive text but when it comes to Tool, and i'm sure every hard core Tool fan out there, are very sensitive."
I'm a massive Tool fan. But I'm not a snowflake. Jesus man....get over yourself. Just imagine this piss Maynard himself would take out of your own comment. Think about it....
