    H. is my favorite song off this album, lyric-wise. The song is about the birth of Devo H Kennan, where Maynard expresses fear of generational traumas being passed down to his newborn son and the serpent whispers doubts and fears into his ears about whether he is fit for the task of being a father.

Aenima is a combination of Anima and Enema. Anima (the spirits that animate man) the feminine spiritual component of a man's inner soul. There is also the Animus - the masculine side of the inner woman's soul.
Enema the tube thing you use to clean shit out of your colon.
The song combines all these concepts.

Third eye is about his own psychedelic experience with peyote and that’s a perfect way to say it this album is tools transition into spirituality through MJKs own personal experiences as where lateralus is a spiritual experience but through the stages of kabbalism which is basically taking you through the stages of chakras to reach the crown and discover new enlightenment lateralus is easily the deepest and emotional filled album ever made but Ænima is 2nd for sure then FI

@@bschuler6216 I just don't get it. Sounds like you like their angry stuff. I prefer the more profound psychedelic sound of Lateralus. I mean it's got grudge the patient, parabola schism lateralus and disposition reflection and triad. It's incredible. Aenima is incredible too but is lacking in the number of top tier songs. Only 46 & 2, Aenema, are up to lateralus level with maybe Eulogy and 3rd eye very close. Maybe stink fist a little below that but everything else I just don't find is the same level musically. Lyrically sure but It's just not as good in my opinion though I guess I can see how depending on your disposition you could prefer it.

Obviously there’s a lot of Jesus symbolism and metaphors going on in Eulogy. They often use that story to connect it to other people. I thought that it was literally about Jesus for a long time but I’ve heard more than one member of the band say that it’s about L Ron Hubbard: founder of Scientology. Just my 2 cents. ✌🏼

As others have said, Stinkfist is not about fisting, and Eulogy is likely not about Jesus.
Both use the imagery as metaphors for something else. Stinkfist about our constant need for stimulation and how that gets out of control, Eulogy is in general about those with martyr complexes who put themselves up above others, like L Ron Hubbard more specifically.

My interpretation of Jimmy, is Maynard singing to his younger self (His real name is James Maynard Keenan), meeting with his younger self at the time when he was 11 and his mother had her anuerism. His inner child has been standing there all these years waiting for his mother to come back for him, so his adult self goes back to find that inner child within himself and provide the comfort that he's needed his entire life.

I was 13 or 14 years old when my dad brought home this album. He blasted it throughout the house for a solid year, keep in mind my dad isn’t what you would think of when you think Tool fan. Shortly after I saw them for the first time at lolapalooza 96’ and became completely hooked. 25+years and a dozen or so shows later and tool holds a place in my heart that is only shared by one other band. Almost all Tool lyrics are metaphorical. If you try to interpret them literally, you'll miss the point. Stinkfist is not about fisting. Eulogy is not about Christ. Maynard uses common and/or provocative ideas and imagery to connect to something specific to him or that he observes in himself, others, or society in general. Keep listening, keep pondering, keep digging. It's an enlightening journey that also kicks ass sonically.

He's not just telling them to Learn to Swim metaphorically. The song is a prayer for a giant earthquake to sink not just Los Angeles but all of California into the sea - anyone who lives here knows that California overdue for a supermassive earthquake that they call "The Big One" which will be the next major San Andreas fault slippage.
See you down in Arizona Bay, predicting beachfront property for Arizonans - also an homage to the late Bill Hicks who was a good friend of Maynard's. Maynard actually did leave Los Angeles and now lives in Arizona where he makes wine and runs restaurants.

It's an interesting contrast in terms of meaning that you make :D I think Aenema, the title track, is expanding on the motif of great floods that have been highlighted in literature, such as the bible, and also significant poetry, such as Rimbaud's After the Flood, which signify a great cleansing and washing away of the immoral and the human condition. It's just comparing it to the modern day enema as a "flushing-out", which is more of reflection of modern society as a whole.

53:30 - selling out used to mean going from underground to mainstream, hard to soft, given to the heaviness of this song, Metallica twisted the meaning in 1989 with "one" bringing the mainstream to the underground, and then claiming rightly- that yes they sold out, sold out every show from there on! We( my friends and most fans) took it as a good thing until 1999 King biscuit flower hour when they celebrated their success live with c.o.c. - I think we were all like wtf? After all this? And putting out load of shit, and reload, black album , all of which were good and yes mainstream, but not the metal and vodka that we grew up with, then they got on the wrong side of history with Napster, meanwhile Tool, c.o.c. Pantera, slayer, testament, etc., took the reigns and kept the course, Tool has us wanting more to this day.. and yes they sold out- everywhere they play...

Man Julian, how much did you pay to sponsor a full album reaction lol? I was going to join T's Patreon but I'm in a bad situation financially right now, I wanna join when I get back to work because I've got lots of great Modern Thrash suggestions!

An enima is for cleaning your colon obviously. What Maynard is talking about it is how you have to cleanse your mind and or soul and leave behind undesirable traits before you attain a higher consciousness. An Enima of the spirit of you will.

Eulogy is actually a song for Bill Hicks though. You hear his voice at the beginning and Tool even riffs on Arizona bay later in this exact record (a Bill Hicks callout). He died just before they went into the studio for this. Annnddd, not to be a downer, but Maynard, at least at this point in his life, was famously an atheist, as was BH. So, I love the notion, but it ain't about Jesus. It was an homage and a goodbye to someone Maynard respected.
