    Hey Everyone, hope you enjoy the vid! what an album, Tried my best to make the cuts as smooth as possible without taking too much away from the flow of each song. I imagine there are many incredible moments that have been missed on this first reaction, very keen to keep diving into this bands work over time!

      You should consider falling back to 1996 on their 2nd album AEnima, and maybe hop forward to their 4th album 10,000 Days from 2006. You can really hear the evolution and growth of the band.

      @@davidward9737 people grow. And bands do, too. Obviously MJK isn't as invested in the band as he was in the 90s. Also the music doesn't really allow for huge vocal performances. Fear Inoculum mosty showcases Dannys performance. But that's just how it is. Things change wether you like it or not. You just have to accept it how it is.

    • @raulsanches9283
      @raulsanches9283 Год назад +5

      @@davidward9737 it is Tool. Just not the Tool you'd like them to be. Bands evolve. Undertow is much different to Aenima and 10000 Days is much different to FI. But I'm sure you know that. It's just you don't want to accept it. I agree MJK is weakest on the album, however it's part of the natural lifecycle of a band. While they were angry in the beginning, their music now is much more meditative. Screaming your lungs out doesn't fit that kind of music. Also MJK simply can't do that anymore as is to be expected at his age. Add to that the years long wait between the albums. Not just we fans had to wait but also MJK since he only does lyrics after everything's finished. In this decade of doing "nothing" for Tool, he likely moved on and tbh I can't blame him. His focus is elsewhere but it is fine this way since now the other bandmembers get their spotlight. You just can't force it...that's not how bands work.

  • @Gideonite
    @Gideonite Год назад +26

    Maynard’s voice is viewed as an instrument not a lead vocal like most bands so his voice is typically mixed in the middle or behind the instrumental. The instrumental is like a cake and his voice is like the icing on top. 😂

    Heard this album the day it came out. Blew me into another dimension, but I could barely comprehend it beyond the force of its musicality. Its been 22 years and I still listen it with regularity. Its a timeless masterpiece and every listen you gain some new insight, understanding, perspective, and hear new details and sounds in the soundscape. Immaculate engineering and production for when it was released in 2001, phenomenal instrumentation, haunting and empowering vocals, and a perfect balance between complexity and primal.

    The story with Ticks and Leeches is that the studio execs told them they wanted a more radio friendly song and they were sick of being controlled so they put that very long middle section instrumental in to ruin the song as far as radio play and the lyrics were to the execs: is this what you wanted, is this what you had in mind, I hope you choke on it! Don't know if anyone mentioned, but the audio from that last track is taken from an old (and classic) episode of Coat to Coast AM with Art Bell, a paranormal themed call in show from the 90s. A guy called in claiming he was a worker from Area 51, he was frantic and distraught as he tells his story, and eventually the radio station's audio cuts out to dead air, while Art scrambled to switch to a backup system. (ruclips.net/video/jK6xkOizAbU/видео.html). A prank call with lucky timing, or something else? Was pretty fun stuff as a nerdy internet kid in the late 90's.

If you understand how even the lyrics are Fibonacci numbers syllable-wise and the time signature variables are also a Fibonacci number when combined, it's pretty amazing. Excellent choice. This is Tool's pinnacle, in my opinion, but all of their albums are thematically/lyrically deep and all instruments (just one drummer, one bassist, and one guitarist) are impressively composed, played, and mixed. I like Aenima just about as much as this album, and you should definitely check it out too.
    My favorites on this album have to be The Patient, Reflection, and the Parabol/Parabola tandem. I can't get enough of that transition from Parabol to Parabola too. Ticks and Leetches was not intended to be part of this album. The story supposedly goes that the music executives were expecting more of the same and the progressive elements made it hard to have a radio friendly marketable song, in their opinion, and they asked Tool to add a song that was more "Rock" and radio friendly. So Tool said F/U and made that song and intentionally put the slow down section in the middle to screw up the plans for a radio friendly song. It turned out to be an amazing addition to this album

    Part of why you might have struggled with following Lateralus is its math rock elements. Lateralus is a fascinating song constructed of countless layers of references to the Fibonacci sequence. However, this certainly does make it a more difficult song to follow, to be honest it’s really not the best one in terms of pure listening quality, especially for a new listener. I recommend checking out polyphonic’s breakdown of the references in the song, as it is really cool and gives a lot of depth to the song, but without the context of what Lateralus is trying to do, the song can definitely feel clunky.

    Wondering if youd like Caligula's Horse now..! Australian prog rock with some masterpieces of epic emotional storytelling.
    The albums "In contact" and "Rise Radiant" are both awesome.
    Songs like Will's Song, Graves, Valkyrie, Salt, Dream the Dead, are just always so powerful
    Curious if youd react to them

    So, one of my favorite albums of the last several years was "Das Album" by WBTBWB (we butter the bread with butter). They are a genre blending band from Germany and some (not all) of the lyrics are therefore German but their transitions and drops and progression are top notch. It is quite good as an entire album and you are one of the few reaction warriors that do full albums, the playlist from their label on here includes the music videos for the songs that do have one, and those are extra entertaining. It may be worth looking at the song title translations if not the lyrics + translation just to have an idea of what each song is about (particularly the German ones). The titles give the gist but there are some crafty wordplays. And neck breaking drops.

    I saw the length of the video than realized it was for the album and not just the title track and knew it was not enough.

    Gotta continue into 10,000 Days next. You heard the Area 51 outro, it kinda ties into 10,000 Days with “Rosetta Stoned” and the interlude before it. Great reaction! Tool is a great listen Mate 😎
