- A half hour video on an oil change?! Well yeah it kind of took longer than I expected to get the oil changed on the 2.8L Duramax diesel engine in this 4x4 Chevy van from Quigley. But as an added bonus I included some of my own background music! mostly because the background music I thought was free really wasn't, so I made my own! I hope you enjoy it.
find out more about these vans at www.quigley4x4.com
Well done, sometimes these basic videos are very helpful for people that haven't been able to learn from someone personally.
Fred, there is a socket set made specifically for those oil filter caps that are very shallow to fit into tight spaces. Search online for oil filter cap sockets and they will come up. Super handy for hard to reach/tight oil filter caps such as the EcoTec and Mini Cooper engines. Those should help make changing that filter a lot easier.
Slip a rubber glove over the actuator. Keeps the oil off. When done changing the filter, remove the glove and all done no mess.
I'm in love with the 2.8 mini-D Duramax (4x4 Colorado).... I just pulled 12k total weight - got better mileage then had I towed my big diesel.... with that said, the hp and torque numbers are very similar.... amazing what modern tech can do to 'old' tech
The background music at 6:50 is Amazing! 🤣 Love the way you keep us laughing, Fred! And keep bringing us the content!
Where can I buy this awesome track?! It's got SOUL!
Love your content, sorry about dirt everyday I really loved that show
My dad has a 2016 Colorado with this engine and I can confirm, the oil is a pain to find.
Fred, I live in San Luis Obispo. You can also call our local trash service. They will drop off a clean oil drain pan and a heavy duty ziploc bag for your used oil filter. You call them and arrange a pick-up. Your trash service day. you set the pan and oil filtee on the curb. and they will pick it up. Met you once at Westside Auto in slo. I helped you at the counter .
Fred I don’t know how I didn’t see all these videos before but I am glad I have all these to watch because there less and less shows I like making new videos
I’m a 40 year journeyman and I still enjoyed this. Showing all of the potential perils was good. Keep up these great videos.
What got me on this one is the 2.8 D.F. engine and Quigley conversion. Now the oil explained was interesting.
The diddle doos. I'm glad I'm not the only one with them in my head.
Can’t wait to hear more about this van, pretty cool configuration!!
Love it. I’ve got a 2.8L express 3500. Sending it to Quigley in 2 weeks. Doing oil change before I go. Thanks!
Rad van👍🏻. Can’t wait to hear your review of its drive and capabilities
Immediate like for the excellent choice of music! Also, cool van!
I liked the in-depth discussion of oil, engine, Quigley, details that most auto repair shops don't know about nor the car owner. You keep it real world like when Petersons 4WD and OFF-ROAD did decades ago when they change their format. I like your real shop not some polished photogenic studio with brand new everything. All your shop miss's is all the empties! 🤣🤣👍👍
Thanx Fred. Great video. Love the song selection!!
Those "grip lock" ties are cool
Nissan used them on some so if you're junk yard crawling nice freebies usually
I've always used them to zip tie a spare key up under cars
Fred.... I'm totally using your custom soundbyte next time I have to give a presentation! You're hilarious!
Diesel oils have often a lot more detergent in it to keep engines clean. Thats why some people like using diesel oils in high mileage cars, since it cleans the engine reaaaaally well.
And yeah in germany its very weird to us if big vans or pick ups dont have some sort of four cylinder diesel. Its just cheaper and makes the necessary torque.
We’re here for it Dave! 🤘🏾
I'm loving the circus music during the time lapse! Good job Fred LOL
Good video cool van and your time lapse music is priceless
I think that oil you're using is the same stuff as a Sprinter van uses too. It's special low ash stuff to avoid plugging up the DPF. The engine itself is fine with most oils of the right weight, the emissions stuff not so much.
Best time lapse music on all of youtube!
4x4 vans are the best thing ever! I wanna do a Ujoint conversion on a e350 one of these days.
Love the time lapse music I literally lol.
That’s a Sweet Van!!
Love the timelapse music!
That’s a very cool van!
I’m surprised quigly didn’t remove the front axle disconnect actuator. Seems to me for something that’s more rugged and geared towards off-road use it would be nice to get rid of it and make the whole front end more reliable. Cool video of something not seen everyday.
Looking at this I have in my toolbox a couple of plumbers wrench's and they have one end bent in the shape of an "L" and one has a 2-1/4" end and the other has a 15mm size on the cranked end. I saw a TiK ToK where a guy used the dipstick you put the dipstick in the filler hole and slowly pore the fresh oil down it, very handy if you are in the service station and need to top off your oil burner with no mess yes it works. I like the idea of a all wheel drive van they make good cheap overland conversions instead of paying $150+ for one.
I like to fabricate a little piece of sheet metal or plastic to make a built in or easily installed custom funnel on a vehicle I plan to keep, just takes a bit more of the pain out of an oil change since even many oem designs drain onto something that makes it go everywhere!
Fred, thanks for doing this video, not for the oil change process itself, but the talk about filter and oil selection. First thought, if you had to order the filter, why not just get OEM? The other thought on the oil, consider the API marking, American Petroleum Institute. CJ4, FA4, CK4 are typically diesel oil grades.
The make low profile sockets designed specifically for those canister style oil filter house and used on a 3/8 wobble extension you would not have to take of your axle actuator. You can also reset your light turning the key on and depressing the gas pedal like 5 times to the floor. Loved the video and the oddity of these vans… they are very rare and it being a Q4x4 is rad. It would make a great backwoods exploring rig and they get pretty good fuel economy too. Definitely make some more videos on it. Derek from VA 🤘🏽
You would not be able to pull the filter out.
Such a cool van! I think I need it, and since I already know how to change the oil 🤔
I do all my oil changes. This was educational. I did not know about dexos.
Fred I would have fallen for that second oil you bought too. I was like why is he showing me this oil jug it's correc...wwwaaaaaiiiitttt ah minute...DOA!
Good info about the oil. I like to run Delo diesel oil in my old gas engines.
You have a rare beast, there - the 2.8 Duramax is being deleted from the G-vans for MY23.
crows foot, or better yet a line wrench crows foot should be one of your next tools to do this job, however I wonder if you could get the filter out with that actuator installed even if you could get it loose. The griplock ties are awesome, US made, company is out of Utah. They were made for aviation where you didn't want the tie to move on a tube or cut into cables or tubing.
Yes I saw an apprentice tighten a sump plug with our truck wheel nut tool, he ripped the welded in thread part clean out of the sump, causing a full days labour written off just for an filters and fluids check and change, to dropping the sump which needless to say it would nto come out due to the K rail front end conversion hmm the joys of having a workshop.
That's the oil I use in our Cayenne Diesel. Usually order it from ECS Tuning or off Amazon, it's hard to find locally
Twenty odd years ago,at a shop I worked in,we used 15w40 in everything. I guess those days are long gone.
I think Quigley is in Fresno... And I remember back in the early seventies Quigley had a van with three differentials one in the back and two in the front with two front drive shafts and one rear drive shaft
That Mobil1 ESP is liquid gold most of the time, as its the only easy to find oil for my Touareg TDi that doesn't require me to get it from the dealer.
Also, surprisingly, baby wipes work AMAZING for cleaning oil off yourself after the car manage to puke the entire crankcase all over you!
they make a low profile socket for those cartridge housing. Had to get one for my saturn to fit into a super tight area. just FYI.
My Land Rover Discovery diesel has the same 3.0 diesel as the Ford Powerstroke 3.0. One of the things the diesel oil for some applications is lower ash for the emissions systems. Once I found the right oil I buy the same oil for every change since new back to 2018.
Also diesel oil always splatters in my experience.
Fred- Effects…. 😏. MT can’t hold all your greasy greatness.😎🤓
Ast and snap on make 3/8 drive 36mm shallow oil filter sockets for that style filter.
I’m not an oilologist but I’m fairly certain the biggest difference in oil for diesels besides weight ( most are 15W-40) is Zinc content, with diesel oils having more of it.
Lisle makes the set of 2 very short 32 and 36 mm sockets for clearance on the gm oil filters cartridge
Hang a couple blankets from the rafters to cut down on the echo.
I'm just a hobbyist, but I have three, yes three 32mm sockets. A standard 1/2" drive one in my socket set, a deep impact one for axle nuts, and a shallow one for the oil filter on my 2002 Mini. I'm pretty sure mine is Lisle brand, but there's a bunch of options. Worth the $10!
The oil for diesel engines have a longer "fibre string" to keep a film on the bearings due to the higher compression ratio. So not to squeeze the oil out. It also contains zink in most cases. Good to know when your old vintage engine requires zink additives. I always use diesel engine oil in my old cars.
Interesting thanks
Curious how that 2.8 hangs with the big boys, what kind of gearing on that setup?
GM botched the naming on dexos1 versus dexos2. It also doesn't help that the most common version of dexos1 is now "dexos1 generation 2".
The most common dexos2 I have found by far is Pennzoil Euro L.
6:19 I was just waiting if Fred will mention connection to libby 2.8 crd :-D not dissapointed :)
I love that song playing when you do the speedup parts of the video. Will that be available on a record soon?
Remote oil filter for sure, that would drive me nuts.
So here is a tip to keep things clean when changing your oil. Place aluminum foil over the area where the oil would flow out of the pan. You can mold the foil over what ever you don’t want oil to get on.
I got a colorado with a 2.8L duramax, did the same thing when trying to figure out what oil to buy :P
Curious how much you paid for that Quigley Van, been wanting one and the prices seem crazy from what I've seen so far. Also very hard to find.
Hey Fred, what's better? A quigly 4x4 or npr 4x4? How much was that van?
Hey Fred they make a specific shallow socket for the filter it’s the shape of the filter with that nut on the end and the total depth of it is no more than an inch and a half with a 3/8 drive on the back of it. You may not have known this but they make these stupid tools for that. So you don’t have to take the actuator off to get the oil filter out.
I use brake cleaner to clean up spilled oil on the engine and nearby parts.
Drain plugs often have replacement washers i.e. crush washers or the like. They should be replaced as well to prevent a leak.
Use a crows foot or flex ratcheting wrench for the oil filter
Yay!
What kind of fuel mileage do you get with that setup?
Drop some Hotshots diesel additive into fuel on a full tank, I increased my mpg by 6 after it ran a full tank thru,I only use T5 Rotella
check into snap on part number A106. MAY HELP. And it would be cool if they would have fit it up with a filter relocation assembly like S-10 Blazers have
On chevy/ GM vehicles to reset the oil life reminder you can also just turn the key on to accessory and push the throttle to the floor 3 times and turn it off and turn it on again and boom it’s reset to 100%
I want one of them vans
Similar to changing the rear fuel filter on my Ram Cummins but diesel is a lot cleaner than used oil.
You should have got AMS OIL that what I use in 2.8 Duramax Colorado that mobile was $16. A quart last time I bought that AMS OIL was $120. For 12 quarts which is 2 oil changes for my truck
no lube on the o-ring?
Love the music! Is it available on spotify!?!? #grammynomination2022
The DexOs2 to probably has to do with the amount of soot is generated by the diesel engine that gets into the oil.
I have an oil catch pan that has a cross hatch so the plug doesn’t go down the hole.
I thought GM also has a dexos D for diesels, I might be wrong.
Only 6 quarts of oil? My 3.0 eco diesel holds ten quarts. Surprised they didn’t use a bigger capacity pan.
I have a diesel Colorado, which I love. I didn't know GM put that engine in anything but the Colorado and Canyon. I'm curious about what kind of mileage you're getting in the van. I can also attest to what a pain it is to find Dexos 2. If nothing else, GM dealers sell it (at a premium).
I have the diesel Colorado as well. I don't even try the stores any more. I just order it online when I get to 20% life. Also fun is the fuel filter change. They are also a cartridge and require a ton of key cycles to prime.
You think that stuff is hard to find, try finding Pentosin oil for VW diesels (the 1.9 Pump Deuse motor) that meets the VW505.01 standard. The only place to get that is the stealership, or order it through Napa or Amazon.
I have a van with this engine. Not a 4x4. I get 20.5 mpg in town.
@debossgarage could answer your questions about the difference in engine oil.
But what kind of fuel mileage does it get??
I live 20 minutes down the road from Quigley. I love how popular these vans are becoming. What's the story on how this van got the 2.8? Surely it didn't come from gm like that.
2017+ it replaced the 6.6L duramax
So when the van is on the lift we can call it " Quigley Down Under " ?
Do your research before buying any but the popular choice on youtube for dirt cheap oil is actual for diesel's. But as you mentioned it works great in gas engines as well. I believe its Shell Rotella t4 heavy duty diesel oil.
So why don't you relocate the oil filter?
Why'd they have to make oil so difficult for some engines. Glad you were able to find the correct oil for the application. Thanks fred I enjoy dirt everyday and all your uploads.
Cut the end out of an aluminum can and slip over the actuator. Hold in place with a hose clamp.
No oil on actuator. And just use a normal oil filter wrench or strap wrench to loosen cap.
Just imagine how much room there will be after you perform a solid axle swap!
Wonder if the cannister would fit around the actuator anyway? Looks pretty tight
@@bigev007 I believe you can separate the cap from the filter element while still above the actuator. Replace seals on cap then slide element into the cavity, put cap in place and slide element down to snap into place and finally screw cap in and tighten. I could be wrong, but if memory serves me correctly, this will work.
@@richwood8650 yeah, I think you're right. I was thinking of the German ones where there is a lot of plastic running from the cap through the filter. I should have waited a bit further into the video 😂
Looks just like a VW TDI oil filter/housing assy.
Yes oil for these small diesels is a bitch. Wife’s diesel equinox same oil. I keep it stocked now.
frustration meter starting to peg out !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol 8)
Did you know that the passenger side of your lift is moving? When you picked up your van I swear I saw it move inward! Check it out
It definitely moved and the driver side looked to fold in a bit as well.
Saw that too, rocking backwards & forwards. Could just be flex, but still something to check.
Just needs a rough country body lift lol 🙃
If you take that to a shop to get the oil changed they’re 100% just dumping the oil all over that actuator, and then hosing it off with brake clean
Dexo Crap! Just like Dex Cool, the orange head gasket eater! I'm a GM diehard through and through, but what were they thinking?
Do you own the Quigley now?
