Nothing wrong with Turbo Diesel Commonrail engines at all. They are more effeccient than electric cars.
In Europe and UK we have loads of modern turbo diesels. The 1.5 TDCi Focus does 50 mpg with ease and high 50's at cruising speed.
They are as you say, nothing like old diesels.

We been asking auto makers in the US for a 4 cylinder diesel vehicle since the 1990s. They have done everything possible to avoid it. They knew if done right it would over shadow all other engine designs. As you can see they have only built 2 so far. 35 miles per hour in a truck is phenomenal. They going all out before electric/hybrids vehicles change the game.

At least it's covered under federal emissions warranty for 8 years/80,000 miles, or 15 years/150,000 miles in California and any state that follows CA standards. Since they almost always build to California standards to sell in all 50 states nowadays anyway, they should generally be engineered to last at least 150,000 miles. Repair once to OEM specs, and it should go until at least 300,000 miles. Sure, I like to be frugal, but needlessly making black soot and polluting the air when it's easy not to (at least for the first 150,000 miles) doesn't make any sense. Its a VM Motori diesel design that is identical to the engines used in mid 2000's Jeep Liberty. If it was an Isuzu design, I'd suspect they wouldn't have issues with cracking pistons and broken valve lifters. The injectors also have had issues with sticking, blowing up engines. However, tuned to about 500 lb-ft of torque, they can be pretty fun to drive and usually haul mail up mountain passes with ease.
