I have a 2012 1500 LT 4x4. I hate the variable cylinder crap. I don’t drive in the city much but every time I let off the gas even on the highway it goes through the variable cylinder crap. We towed a trailer that weighed about 6000 lbs from NH to AK when it was a year old. It only has 46,000 miles and we drive it less than 3,000 miles a year now. I.d have to live to be over 100 to get to 150,000 miles so I guess I’ll keep it.
Hello Scotty, I have 2018 Denali 6.2. I installed the RANGE deactivation module in my truck. 199$ cost. Takes the deactivation out. Works perfect. Pass it on.
I am running a Range Pulsar LT in my 2021 GMC Sierra AT4 (6.2L) for three years now. No issues. Stays in V8 mode, no start/stop engine voodoo crap, throttle position bumped up, no speed limiter, etc. Best $500 I ever spent.
The problem is that the bad lifters and cam are still there. Unless you change the cam and lifters and then reprogram the computer, you will possibly still have issues later on.
I believe that's the one that I have in my V6. I had unplugged it because I was worried about the battery going dead and the other day I could feel something weird going on or hear something weird going on so I did plug it back in
No where is like it used to be. I remember 40 years ago having a few vehicles and I just kept the keys in them in the yard and never locked the house. We never locked our vehicles when we were in stores either. I also remember back then a gas station got held up and the owner chased them and shot and killed one of the robbers. The attitude was he got what he deserved and that was the end of it.
@@truenorthcanadian5628sadly at around 150,000 miles the valves on the "deactivated" cylinders start to get REALLY weak and start causing a loss of power and can cause even more damage
I have a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3 with 6 speed trans... 147k miles on the clock and no major issues other then regular maintenance and an investment of 199$ for a Range AFM disabler... most people run these trucks without servicing the trans filter and fluid and just get them flushed... this causes major issues down the road and the amount of people who ignore this suffer trans failure... it’s all about how you take care of your machine.
I have a 2011 Silverado 5.3 with 137k miles...no transmission issue and shifts smooth enough to not even hear it . Just depends on how you take care of them that goes with all vehicles. I have a small rear main seal leak which I've had on most my gms. That is the only weak point I've experienced and I've owned 6 of them. 2011 is the model I drive now and no issues
I have a 2011 5.3 as well with about the same miles as you. My experience has been the same as yours. Relatively very few issues. I did have to have a seal replaced on my transfer case but engine & tranny have been good. I still got better gas mileage on my old 2000 Silverado with no cylinder deactivation but that one was a 2wd regular cab plus that era had better shaped bodies for aerodynamics
aint it the truth now...when scotty talked about ..."even they become confused" and showed the chimp in the lab coat it reminded me of the old aamco transmission commercial, where their competitors would say - our transmissions are never touched by human hands - and then they'd cut away to two monkeys in white jump suits on each side of an automatic transmission hitting it with baseball bats.
As a retired tech with 47 years at a dealership I totally agree with you Scotty on all counts and what ever happened to a truck with a manual transmission. Can you imagine a Chevy truck with a 5.3 and no cylinder on demand system with a 6 speed stick.
Way way way down the road Im gonna swap mine to a tr6060. A few people have done it and Im just waiting on a decent number to do it so they start making swap kits so I dont have to hunt down parts. Apparently they use alot of stuff from the 5th gen camaros to do the swap.
GM will never stop coming up with ew stupidly stuff... They try to beat others but they get to look cheap, and stupid them selfs.... Soon they will have engine deactivation and never enter the market again
I have a 2014 GMC 5.3 liter Sierra with 186,000 miles. No problems, other than recently replacing the water pump, which was inexpensive and easy to do. I consistently get 22, 23 MPG at 70 MPH, with cylinder deactivation functioning frequently as I go up/down hills. I fully change ATF once a year. (6 speed tranny) Change oil/filter every 5,000 miles or so using hi grade synthetic oil. Replaced my first set of stock Goodyear tires at 105,000 miles. 2nd set of Michelens looks like they will go 100,000 + as well. Couldn't be more pleased.
i have a 2016 gmc Sierra 1500 with the 5.3 bought it with 100k ( was told straight up from the dealer to just be vigilant on the maint schedule ) on it and had full service records on it i already took it on a few long road trips with no issue . I just make sure the oil is changed every 5k with high quality synthetic oil
@@nwabuezeozuzu6370 It does additional damage to engine. Every time the engine shuts off and turns on causes additional engine wear.......all just for saving minimal amounts of fuel. If thats not enough the constant shut off and on of the engine is terribly annoying.........but thats my pers opinion. Scotty did a video on why auto start/stop is bad for your engine as well. May not notice anything the first few years of ownership, but if you want long term ownership, you should prob have that feature disabled. Companies like autostop eliminator make a decent product so that you dont have to push the button every time you start the engine.
@@brucemartin2605 Nice yeah that's nothing. Mine leaks more than that but I'm resealing everything when it warms up. Not to tough on an old 350. I'm assuming you have the 5.3 LS, also a super strong platform. Unless you have a 99 classic.
My 2010 AlTerrain GMC has that multiple cylinder V8. So far 152,000 miles It uses 1/2 quart oil between oil changes. I use a metal penetrating lube. It makes a difference. Quieter also. Truck is a work horse pull rated 10,700 off road 45 degree grade. I pull out stumps and plow fields. 15 mpg around town 20mpg after 2 hrs on road. My mechanic told me it’s a really good truck. I’m one of the lucky ones.
My same Tahoe Z71 has 285k. Runs like a champ. Those 5.3 motors are a beast. The transmissions are straight poo. I'm on my 3rd rebuilt 4l60 in my Tahoe & Sierra. I finally have a shop that knows what they're doing I guess. I never skimp on any rebuild either. Change everything to high end parts. But I learned after fishing the net, forums the 4l60e transmissions are just crap.
The cylinder deactivation only occurs when off throttle Also change your oil regularly to help with the gm VLOM the lifters collapse shutting the valves its very important you keep up on oil changes with this system I work at a Chevy dealership and people go to these 19.99 oil change places and they put conventional oil inside and wait until the oil life monitor hits 0% then wait until the next payday to change there oil Just modern engines in general change your oil
Isn't the oil life monitor on a timer rather than how many miles you drive? I have a 5.3L Tahoe that I only drive on the weekends so not many miles, shouldn't I pay more attention to how many miles I drive rather than the oil life monitor? And is 5,000 miles a good time to change oil? Thanks in advance.

The dealer fix for a clunk when stopping was to take the drive shaft out and put a Superball into yoke to cushion the coming together of the yoke and the u-joint.
I have Silverado 2016 with 150k and had no problems at all its a really great truck . actually the biggest company of oil here in Saudi Arabia use these trucks and they are everywhere in the eastern province and it holds its value a lot. very capable engine.
My 5.3 with cylinder deactivation has 240,000 miles. I have done very little to this truck, other than basic maintenance, new front wheel bearings and front driveshaft seals. And I have averaged around 20 mpg for years. On road trips with a friend that drives a Tundra, he averaged 13 mpg, while I was getting 21. Maybe I got lucky and got a good one, but this truck has been very reliable and economical for a big truck.
My 2015 silverado has about 150,000 on it. Oil is changed every 5000 miles at the dealership to keep my drive train warranty in effect. The transmission went out at 128,000. Dealer replaced without any argument. They think it was at least partially caused by the valve sticking closed on the transmission cooler.
Good afternoon Scotty. Late to the video last night I was with my daughter. She got rid of her 2014 Hyundai Elantra GT. She bought a 2020 Toyota Corolla SE( made in Japan) with 8000 miles on it. That makes my wife and both daughters getting Corolla SE within the last 3 weeks 👍✌
The 2013 and 2014 GTs were the best ones made as they came from Osan, Korea. The ones built here had lots of engine problems. I have a 2014 with 167k miles and zero issues. Can’t go wrong with a Corolla though. Had a 2000 with 283k miles and sold it for $2000 with a broken AC system.
I have a 2014 Corolla LE 107.000 miles other than brake(ft) & 2 batteries & oil changes very good car! Keep an eye on the + positive battery terminal seems to get corrosive! good luck! Mine was built in Canada!
I had a 2015 Silverado that had 217,00 miles on it and ran good but had to rebuild torq converter. Got 24 to 25 mpg consistently with 5.3. My 2018 Silverado gets the same milage with a 6.2
The L83 engine you’re talking about is actually a pretty good engine, all things considered. It’s a pushrod engine based on a proven design. The AFM on 2014-2018 engines is V8 or V4 (no V6). Yes the lifters can fail, but this is completely attributable to poor oil and long oil change intervals. This generation has been on the market for 10 years; frequent oil changes with quality synthetic oil is the key. As for the transmission, the 6 speed is pretty good, just keep up with flushes of the torque converter per the maintenance schedule. Yes, the 8 speed is very problematic; it requires frequent flushes with updated fluid and usually also at least one rebuild of the transmission. We own two the these, both with the 6 speed transmission. One has 350,000 km, the other has 210,000 km. Not a single issue and they’ve only ever had regular oil, filter, and fluid changes. Yes they’ve got their issues, but I’d take a GM anyday over a whimpy Ford, or a Ram death wobble, or a guzzling Tundra with crap payload…
Just an fyi I own a 2015 model sierra. Oil changed every 5k, transmission pan dropped with filter replacement and 5 fresh quarts every 50k with zero issues. 185k on the clock.

Chevrolet and GMC are and have been the best selling, longest lasting trucks on the market for over 55 years. Here's a tip for the GM cylinder cut-out issues that some don't like, unplug it like everyone else does. Problem solved. The worst piece of crap on the truck market is the Toyota Tundra by far. 87% of people that have purchased one new say that they would never own one again. Under powered, horrible fuel mileage, unreliable, expensive repairs are a few of the reviews they receive. True facts.
I have been using a OBD2 plug-in AFM disabler from Range Technologies for several years. I have no issues. Also - unlike a full re-programming when you don't want it - you just unplug it. No one will ever know it was ever connected - so it doesn't' impact warranty. Check out Range technology AFM disabler.
Hello Scotty! I bought a Chev Avalanche new in 2011. At first I was amused by the AFM system but just after a few days it really became annoying. The jitter from 4 to 8 cylinders quickly became a thorn in my side. I then realized that driving the truck in Manual Mode and keeping the transmission in 5th gear (not selecting 6th), AFM would not engage. Therefore I have been using the truck like that ever since. The difference in RPM at highway speeds is about 300-500 RPM's higher from using 5th instead of 6th. So far so good as I really believe the extra RPM's shouldn't do any real harm. Anyhow, love your channel and keep up the great work. Blessings and Cheers!
Had a lease 2018 GMC Canyon 10 speed transmission. Gave me problems for 3 years. Now I have a 2021 Toyota tacoma trd off-road and loving every minute of it.
@@jeffduncan9140 -- Yes. All 7th Generation Corvettes have it (2014 to 2019). With a manual transmission, it only goes into four-cylinder mode when you have the car set to "ECO" mode. In automatic Corvettes, the engine will drop down into "V4" mode whenever it wants to do so. Plugging in the Range AFM device prevents this from happening. Going into V4 mode only saves about 1 mile per gallon, so it is not worth it to potentially damage your engine to save a few pints of fuel on a long trip.
@@1VaDude gotcha. I had no idea. I manage a fleet of Chargers with the same issue. I would love to deactivate that crap but any mods void the warranty.
We drive our Tahoe LTZ 5.3 in M5 around town 50 mph and under. Shifts normal all by itself. Don’t have to manually shift up and down with the switch on the shift lever. It stays on all 8 cylinders. Jump on the highway and then M6, cruising on the highway it will go to V4.
Same, got me the range afm disabler at 2k miles. Up to 40k now on my 2018 and no issues at all, and crazy part is my mpg didn’t really change. I still get 23mpg highway at 70 mph
@@firesniper14 mine is 08 5.3 with 152k. Engine runs like new. From what Scotty says, I’m worried about the tranny! (Oh no, I’m going to be taken off of YT because of using common word for transmission! 🙄
Have the cylinder deactivation on my 2012 Honda Accord V6. There is a guy up in Canada who sells a S-VCM that essentailly eliminates the 6 to 3 cylinder deactivation system. I purchased the car at 57k and the spark plugs were oil fouled from this system. I immediately put the "muzzler" on the VCM system (what honda calls cylinder deactivation) and it has been running great since. Full power in that great honda 3.5L V6. Tons of power. No more bucking of the engine in and out of VCM mode and also no more breaking the costly motor mounts.
If you’re gonna put a 4 cylinder engine in a 1500 or larger truck, you really wish they’d use something like the old Detroit Series 50, which was essentially a Series 60 with 2 cylinders chopped off. Great engine for class3-5 trucks.
All perfectly said. For these Chevys and GMCs I recommend throwing a Range AFM / DFM disabler on the truck. The GM V8s are excellent engines... the 6.2L is an absolutely brilliant engine... with the exception of the AFM / DFM technology. Costs $100 to disable permanently. My 6.2L V8 is clean as hell and will run to 300,000 miles no problem. The transmissions are a different story: disastrous.
We used to have a mechanic in town who knew his stuff.. but he sold the business to a guy who’s been working under him for several years.. I just hope the guy also knows his stuff
I've read that GMs 4.8L V8, which they discontinued years ago, is very similar to the 5.3L. The only difference, besides displacement, is that the 4.8L did not have cylinder deactivation. Hence, the 4.8L had a better quality rating at the time.
Every new truck has its issues. I have a 2002 2500 gmc sierra with the l96 6.0 with a 6L90 tranny and haven't had any trouble. I'm pretty sure the body will turn to dust before the power train stops working.
Still towing my 7100lb 26ft camper with 219,000 miles. 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3l All Terrain. Only thing I have done is the AC compressor and a battery.
I put in a device that plugs into the OBD port and deactivates the system and works out great. I’ve got over 155k miles and no issues with the engine, oil pressure is always good.
Scotty, ive had my 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 my truck has 62,000 miles on it and my torque converter had grenaded recently and a GM dealer quoted me a price of $2,800! A 3 year old truck with that kind of miles, i never tow anything or haul anything. They dont make them like they used to.
@Zaguate if i buy another chevy it will certainly be a diesel, they put allison transmissions in the diesels. But still for $40,000+ you think they would last a while...
Probably the transmission too. I have a 2018 Sierra but 2wd and i just don't feel there's uniformity between the engine and transmission. When you're on hilly back roads. I feel that the cylinder deactivation kind of confuses the transmission a bit.
Didn't Cadillac try that " cylinder deactivation " once before, that didn't work then either ? GM seems to be" screwing up by the numbers " . This is sad for a once great American manufacturers .
Got rid of of my 2016 Sierra v8. I purchased that Cylinder deactivation Deactivator. Truck definitely ran better (RF ID) zero issues zero misfire. I rustproofed the truck every year. Bought it new. I’d say 65 % of the truck was starting to perforate. It probably would have dissolved from the rust. Not impressed at all.
I have cylinder deactivation in my Dodge Charger. It makes a difference on highway driving, but i turned it off with a tuner because it rides smoother that way. There’s a slight hesitation when it goes back to 8 cylinders.
I have a GMC Sierra 2018. The best way I can describe it. It sounds and feels like a clutch slips when you slightly drpress the accelerator pedal. I'm really considering having my engines deactivation deactivated. Not so bad on going onto a highway but on hilly back roads, Eh.. I feel that theres no uniformity with engine and transmission with.the cylinder dectivation system activated.
The 2004-07 Honda Accord hybrid has the same concept, the v6 has a 'hybrid mode' where half the cylinders deactivate, very useful on the highway where you're at a consistent speed most the time but when you're at a stop light or city driving, hybrid mode turns on and for whatever reason you decide to floor it, pray your spark plugs don't fall threw. Would've been my favorite hybrid only if there wasn't huge cables all over the engine bay, making it almost impossible to change spark plugs on the inside cylinders, and if there was also a button to turn hybrid mode on and off. Wouldve been the best but no.
Exactly why I didn’t purchase a truck by GM. The GMC is a beautiful truck but cylinder deactivation & auto stop/start feature drove me to a Tundra back in 2019.
Yes, but does not default to the off position. You have to push the button every time you start the vehicle. No big deal you are thinking but sometimes I would forget. How do I know, my wife’s Highlander has it. If it had cylinder deactivation I would not have purchased it.
I don't even want a truck, but I watched this entire video because his videos are just so good. I wish I knew more about auto repair. If Scotty was my neighbor I was ask him to let me be his Jedi apprenticed !
Scotty, I took my GMC diesel canyon in 3 times. Has the 6 speed. They said no problems. I finally got tired of the jerking and clunking. Same mileage, 35k. I dropped the pan. Full of metal shavings. Fluid from GM looked weird. Cleaned the magnet and pan. Put in new filter. Put in mobile blue label. Shifts like a dream now. Don't feel a thing. The problem is they don't have mechanics, they have computer nerds. My diffs had too much fluid, transfer case didn't have enough and had same weird color to it. Not trying to knock your diagnosis but this immediately fixed my issue and mine was so bad that people riding with me thought I was in 4 wheel drive. They couldn't believe a new truck with less than 35k in miles drove like a old beater truck.
Hey Scotty I saw an article that GM isn’t going to put this Mickey Mouse Deactivation stuff in their new trucks because of the “chip shortage” Like you said, they shouldn’t have ever put ii in their trucks to start with!! Thanks as always for your insight!! Keep up the great work!!
I have a 2018 Sierra with the 5.3. I'm considering the cylinder deactivation. Not so much on highway but on hilly back roads. I feel that there's no uniformity between the engine and transmission. It's almost like the transmission kind of gets confused a bit and the only way I can describe it that it sounds and feels like a clutch is slipping when the engine tries to synchronize the deactivation system to kick in to all 8 cylinders. It's kind of annoying actually.
V8 naturally aspirated trucks are , at least compared to the 2,7 4zylinder turbo do feel a lot less capable while towing ! My v8 revs like hell if i go uphill and want to keep my speed high. Test drove the 4zylinder and i am sorry to say thats it feels much better. And conserning scottys cylinder deactivation.... it hardly kicks in if you are towing or hauling heavy loads!!! And if you need the power, the engine instandly acitivates all cylinders, sono need to warry bout that.
Scotty Kilmer is that type of mechanic what I would call in this video the "GMC/GM whisperer" in my humble opinion. I never heard that you can literally change from 8 cylinder to 6 cylinder to 4 cylinder and deactivating whatever system he said because I lost track. This is why I don't like new cars nowadays with all this stupid and complicated technology that is difficult to work on by yourself. Going to a dealership won't necessarily help hints why you need a real professional to actually work on complicated computers on a modern vehicle like that truck in this video. If I needed a truck to haul heavy items, diesel is the way to go and not gasoline.
2015 5.3l 6spd , 100,000 km. Do oil and fluids early - zero problems yet. Diablo sport, range technology etc or drive in 5th gear when not on the highway, it stays out of 4cyl mode. Highway speeds the thing has too much air resistance that it needs 8cylinders to push it, anyway.

I have a 2011 5.3 as well with about the same miles as you. My experience has been the same as yours. Relatively very few issues. Scotty picks them very well
aint it the truth now...when scotty talked about ..."even they become confused" and showed the chimp in the lab coat it reminded me of the old aamco transmission commercial, where their competitors would say - our transmissions are never touched by human hands - and then they'd cut away to two monkeys in white jump suits on each side of an automatic transmission hitting it with baseball bats.
As a retired tech with 47 years at a dealership I totally agree with you Scotty on all counts and what ever happened to a truck with a manual transmission. Can you imagine a Chevy truck with a 5.3 and no cylinder on demand system with a 6 speed stick.

All cylinder deactivation should b deactivated. Also autostart stop
Why autostart stop?
@@nwabuezeozuzu6370 It does additional damage to engine. Every time the engine shuts off and turns on causes additional engine wear.......all just for saving minimal amounts of fuel. And I have averaged around 20 mpg for years. On road trips with a friend that drives a Tundra, he averaged 13 mpg, while I was getting 21. Maybe I got lucky and got a good one, but this truck has been very reliable and economical for a big truck.

Guy at parts store, "why would they do that ?" Because it's gm.
Yes no v6 ty. Have a 17 Silverado with the range device 52k miles. I'd like to find a place to completely eliminate the AFM

Theres a dongle you can plug into the OBDII port to disable AFM.

@@1VaDude Of all cars, they put an MDS system in a Corvette?
@@jeffduncan9140 -- Yes. All 7th Generation Corvettes have it (2014 to 2019). With a manual transmission, it only goes into four-cylinder mode when you have the car set to "ECO" mode. In automatic Corvettes, the engine will drop down into "V4" mode whenever it wants to do so.
Plugging in the Range AFM device prevents this from happening. Going into V4 mode only saves about 1 mile per gallon, so it is not worth it to potentially damage your engine to save a few pints of fuel on a long trip.

I've read that GMs 4.8L V8, which they discontinued years ago, is very similar to the 5.3L. The only difference, besides displacement, is that the 4.8L did not have cylinder deactivation. Hence, the 4.8L had a better quality rating at the time.
But they did not have direct fuel injection which really hurts performance and gas mileage.

Hey Scotty I saw an article that GM isn’t going to put this Mickey Mouse Deactivation stuff in their new trucks because of the “chip shortage”
Like you said, they shouldn’t have ever put ii in their trucks to start with!!
Thanks as always for your insight!! Keep up the great work!!
4.3L V6 vortec engine 250km still runs fine all original parts besides the intake and air filter. Love my gmc
Same here with 4,3 Silverado 2017 196000
It’s shifting weird because of the AFM when I disabled the AFM in my Silverado my 6 speed was shifting just fine.
Sounds plausible, he should get an afm muzzler
I have a 2018 Sierra with the 5.3. I'm considering the cylinder deactivation. Not so much on highway but on hilly back roads. I feel that there's no uniformity between the engine and transmission. It's almost like the transmission kind of gets confused a bit and the only way I can describe it that it sounds and feels like a clutch is slipping when the engine tries to synchronize the deactivation system to kick in to all 8 cylinders. It's kind of annoying actually.
My 2002 Vortec 5.3l doesn't have this tech. GRATEFUL.
Happy St Patrick's Day Scotty!
Happy St Patrick's Day!
You don’t get a gmc, chevy or dodge for towing or hauling anything.
You saying toyota honda and ford are good
Hey Scotty! We LOVE you in South Carolina! Mr. 94' Celica here.
There's thousands of trucks and suvs with high miles with that engine with minimal to no problems not unlike for ecoboost engines 🤷🏻♂️
*fecalboost
Happy St. Patrick's Day Scotty!
happy st patrick's day!
Hey Scotty does GM make your tent? It looks like it's a poor quality can't handle the rain!
That’s why I’ll keep rocking my 99 Sierra with the 5.3 always V8. Only 131k miles and runs like a clock.
