  • Bioshock released in 2007 to massive praise. With a sequel being a for sure thing, 2k needed to make sure Bioshock 2 was packed filled with content to keep the attention of the player. This was at the same time games like Call of duty 4, and Halo 3 were released so it seemed like a multiplayer mode was a must. Upon release the story mode would take about 8 hours of playing and have 8 different endings, and a full fleshed out multiplayer. So how was it? we are going to dive into it in this video to find out if it was any good.

I loved the first game back in the day and didn't get to play the 2nd until a couple years ago in the remaster on PC, so I literally had no idea there was EVER a multiplayer mode like this in there originally. So yeah, I completely missed the boat on this experience. Bummer.

I do feel like they did a stand up job making this multiplayer pretty accessible to the single player base by adding plasmids the player was use to. If I remember correctly this was the only multiplayer game my dad ever enjoyed.

True, the biggest issue was competition, the fad at the time being modern FPS games this just seemed a bit to unique for its own good. It does suck though as its a ton of fun and I cant think of another multiplayer like it.

One of the problems was this game was released inbetween modern warfare 2 and black ops 1. Imo those were CODs glory days and it seemed like any other multi-player fps games were mostly ignored in favor of COD.

BioShock in general is easily one of my all time favorite gaming series. The multiplayer for it was bumpy but was still fun and lore wise was brilliant cause we only heard and seen the ruins of the rapture civil war, but being part of the civil war is honestly a great idea.

I remember playing this a lot back in the day on the 360
my most used loadout was Nailgun (damage upgrade), Elephant gun (damage upgrade), winter blast, houdini, fast metabolism, repairman and one other tonic (can't remember, I know I used speedy hacker sometimes and the eve regenerator one others)
It was a sort of generalist loadout, who could do decently at most ranges, and focused on map control with hacking/repairing turrets, and hacking vending machines. the winter blast helped this by making it safer and quicker to hack things
I would always scramble to get the big daddy suit if it spawned, no matter what

But even when I got it, the multiplayer was well past its hayday. I thought story-canon multiplayer would be the next big thing. All the maps are excellent. You just have to know how to play on them. Insect swarm is a perfect plasmid. It's primarily used for attacking the suit. All the plasmids and guns are perfect. It's the best multiplayer game, and game, period (the multiplayer).

    • @Sunk
      @Sunk  2 года назад +8

I think some maps just support players that have everything unlocked, with open areas and large ledges that can be accessed by players with perks and plasmids that take a while to get. I see you are a bit biased but I'll end with this, it's obvious the devs took care into this product even when they didn't have to, it works better, and is more enjoyable than I was expecting. I really enjoyed this experience, there's no way it was going to be perfect, but they made it fun which is more important than trying to make it perfectly balanced when the multiplayer wasn't even the main focus of the game.

The Bioshock games deserve to be called immersive sims and not just immersive sim lite especially considering System Shock 1 didn’t have all the rpg stuff that System Shock 2 did.
Also I don’t think that insect swarm didn’t fit as it was a fun plasmid in each game it was in.

Shame this one never took off. Granted, it had to compete woth games like Call of Duty or Battlefield back then and every other game had a multiplayer mode shoved in there (like Dead Space 2 which was odd), bit I think this one was well made and true to the universe and lore. Loved the customization, little character dialogue, and how original some of the weapons and Plasmids were, kinda makes me wish we had a single player or co-op DLC playing as a human and not a Big Daddy so we could use these powers in a story setting.

I haven't seen anyone mention this, but the developers of the multiplayer wasn't 2K (main game's developers), instead developed by Digital Extremes, who would go on to make Warframe. Seeing how much they fleshed out a multiplayer game mode with both mechanical complexity and story progression is a real testament to how much DE cares, and you can see that care in Warframe today.

I was disappointed by Infinite, but I will say overall I still enjoyed my time with it. 1 and 2 were leagues better than it though.

To your credit I really should chapter the video for people who want to skip to the breakdown. I personally am interested in the history of the multiplayer in Bioshock. It wasn't in the first game, so what changed and made them feel the need to add it to the second. I also just like talking about Bioshock.

Buddy I called it an immersive sim light because I knew I would get some people who would get all anal about it. I don't think it's an immersive sim, but it's more than your run of the mill fps game. It has immersive sim elements while keeping itself more linear.
