  • MY BLOG.robbiethewoodtu... all here is the second video of wet turning a natural edge bowl from ash.
I have put the bowl in a bucket of washing liquid for 5 days to soak.. I then left it to dry a little for 1 day put it back on the lathe for finishing
Hers my toughs on this process.
use yellow washing liquid green discolours the wood
its is a brilliant way of getting a finish on difficult woods. There was some movement in the bowl but not enough to cause cracking.
The bowl has dried now and is in the house no cracking it was turned from green on 17 march 2 of April today and it is dry except the bark it is a little soft
you can only use oil or wax for finishing as the washing liquid causes problems with the finish

That natural edge bowl turned out beautiful. I have never heard of this technique but found it very interesting. Thank you for the demonstration and explanation.

Your "soap" bowl turned out great Robbie! I never thought about a turned-in rim with a natural edge. I really like it... yeah, I might have to "borrow" that idea :) Well done!
    Have a good one, Kevin

That is a beautiful piece, Your always trying different shapes and sizes. It is always a pleasure to watch you turn. Please keep sharing your videos there fun to watch and a great way to learn and try new projects.
I have turned a small bowl with side's going strait up natural edge and it was a different shape for a bowl for me. I"ll have to try one like yours where it rolls over the top a little bit. Again a very nice piece. Thank you.

Truly great work. But sometimes I’d take a warped bowl over perfect. You put great detail in your work. I just turn by eye and stop when I’m happy with it. But truly like the extra effort you go through to make it right. Good video 👍🏻

Robbiethewoodturner BTW, what's the purpose of the wood on top of your tool rest ? To reduce chatter/vibrations?

it was on it for a negative rake scraper to keep it level on another project just haven't removed it at that time

This is another brilliant video Robbie. You're going to see shares in washing up liquid makers going through the roof now. I was somewhere recently and saw 5 litre containers of washing up liquid for small money but I forget where it was. I'll ask my wife, she'll know.
    Best Wishes, Brendan.

This soaking in 50/50 water / dish soap, is that only for fresh timber? or can you use it on lets say a log that has been outside for a year or so? ... you have a good one :)

I'll try some wood ipe I have, since the microwave formed cracks. I had thought up in cooking them, something like what laminators do, but it would generate a higher cost. Just one question: this shell is not loose over time, or to dry the wood?
