English Yew has been the most common hedge in Chicago (where I grew up) for decades…we have some really big old specimens dating back to the 1910's at least…obviously not as big and old as the ones in their native land though :)

Lovely piece Robbie! I know you're proud of it. I wasn't aware that Danish oil would turn dark after 6-8 months. Is that based on the wood species or is that a characteristic of Danish oil? I don't ever want to lose the beautiful natural beauty of the grain and knots. Thanks for sharing your craftsmanship. You're a true artist. Hope all is well with you and yours. :-)

Charlie Zellner Thanks Charlie glad you enjoyed the project
well the wood changes colour with the help of violet light the same as redwood or any wood exposed to light.
probably best to use a good finish with a UV protection
      Take care Robbie

Hi Robbie, I am glad you were able to put up this video, I was missing your art mate! Also, as you probably know, I began posting videos with the Ornament Challenge and kept it up doing some more stuff. As a consequence my mother (who loves carpentry) began to watch not only my videos but those of many other wood-turners including you. When she saw the finger-less gloves you wear, she surprised me by getting me a pair. I find them amazingly comfortable and besides that way I can avoid most of the little cuts and scratches that I was getting before. As always, a pleasure to see you work and that was some problematic piece you began with but surely made the most out of it. Congratulations and wood luck in your affairs! Merry Christmas! Daniel

Robbie, this is really a beautiful piece of wood (after turning). I have to say, I have yet to have the ability to envision how to turn a piece like you just did. Also wanted to ask you. I think you like Crown Elsworth gouges for bowls. But several times I have seen some woodcut tools being used. Have you noticed less vibration with them due to the solid shaft? Also, how does the cutting steel hold up to other M2 steels you have. I guess what I am wondering is how often you have had to change the tips? And any reason you don't try or like them for bowl turning?

Awesome vase Robbie! What a great save of an ugly piece of firewood... You mentioned that yew will darken over time and the beautiful grain swirls will disappear? Does exposure to UV light cause that? I've heard of other woods that do the same, but never heard of yew doing that... Thanks so much for sharing yet another wonderful video!
