Hi Stewart, so glad you’re over whatever it was that laid you low. I hope you and yours are staying safe in these worrying times. Regards, Sue & Frank Bové.
Hi Stewart, been watching your very instructional and entertaining content for a long time now however, this is my first thank you. sorry that you have not been well and I'm pleased you have recovered. During these trying times (uk lock down) home is a very lonely place on ones own and you help to make the days a little easier so thank you. Take care.
Hi Stephen - delighted you like this one, and pleased that my videos are helping during lockdown. Will try to keep them coming regularly! Cheers and best wishes.
Glad to see you've not gone mad and have indeed returned to color! I am sorry to hear that you were ill, but also happy that you're feeling better! Happy Easter My Friend!
Shine is goooood. The colours are just wonderful. And the finish just makes it. Good to see you back in the shed. Doesn't matter if it's colour or not..... :) :) :) :)
Hi, Claire - thanks for coming over from Billy's channel. I'm delighted you like this one. Hope you'll look around some more. I love the resin work you've been doing! Cheers - new sub!
About seven minutes in all I kept thinking about was the inside of an Abalone shell. I used to dive for the stuff in N. California. Looks great. Have a good 1. Dave.
Thanks! Glad you like it. Hope to be fully back on my feet by the middle of the week....most of this project was filmed couple of weeks ago....want to do something new soon!
Hi ho lergy boy. Good grief, why has it taken so long for you to come to your senses, what a stunning piece of Ash i was hoping you would finally get the hang of this colouring lark. Lately I’ve been trying out Blooming, as with water colours on wet paper, but now I’m thinking of oils and detergent mmmmm.
Hey, Jonathan! Been away for the half-term break so apologies to not have replied earlier.....lovely bit of wood this! Nice ideas you've got there....Cheers!
Hi Stewart, That was a stunning demonstration by "More-On" Furini, obviously whatever laid you low did not take away your colour co-ordination thankfully. Now all you need is to get some colour and spring into you. Really enjoyed that demo it brought the sunshine back into Easter Monday.
Well, we'll have to see....the colouring was done before I had to take to me bed......there's a beech colouring disaster to follow at some point, though that was also done before being ill. Not done any proper CREaTINg since coming off my sick bed so we'll have to see if my powers have been sapped..........fingers crossed! Glad you liked this one, Roger. Cheers!!
Definitely a case of ‘less is more’. The colour is fantastic and really enhances the beautiful figure in the ash. Very sorry to hear that you have been unwell, but thankful that you are back in the workshop with your usual energy and talent. Keep safe and healthy.
You can catch my attention with blue -green anytime! The beautiful grain and feather makes me suspect this was a crotch piece. Wise to go with simple techniques to bring out the grain so nicely. Guess you get to scrimp on the sanding from now on!
Thanks, Valerie - yep, peacock colours do it for you, I know! It was indeed a crotch piece, just can't remember what happened to the other half of it!!
That's beautiful, Stewart. The colors and finish make it look like stone. I hope you're going to keep this one. Glad you're better. Stay safe and healthy. Bill
Hi Stewart! Thumbs up my friend! Beautiful piece of wood, a lot going on on that grain, and you certainly brought it even more to life with the coloring. Then again, blue is my favorite color, so I love it so much more because of that. Oil is a great finish, just requires some patience waiting between coats to build it up. Congratulations on a really spectacular piece! Cheers! Daniel
Glad you’re feeling better! Welcome back. Btw, from around the 7-minute mark, I started thinking Peacock!!! My younger son loves all things peacock. Beautiful piece! And, ash is one of my favorite trees/woods. Happy day! Happy Easter, my friend!
Very, very nice. I learned something from you on this one. Really like the stippling you did when applying the yellow and additional blue. The effect is beautiful. Take care.
Well, if you're going to make a return to coloring you might as well make it stunning. I really loved it with the second coat of bright blue, but as usual you proved that you can always make it better. Love the grain and the color. Speaking of better... Sorry to hear you weren't well. If you're stuck at home it seems a real waste of perfectly good sick leave.
Now that looks stunning, it is lovely having colour back 😁, so glad you are on the mend, that piece of willow I showed you is back on the top shelf 🤣. Take care, thank you for sharing xx
I like this ash. beautiful colors and beautiful grain. The shine is beautiful. Which oil did you use. I couldn't see well. I think it was a Chestnut product. - Frank.
Nice to see another colored piece and nice to know you recovered from your sickness. It's a worrisome time right now when anyone gets sick. I do have a question. You show a can of Finishing Oil. I'm not sure if that's the description we use here in the US. I found Danish Oil and antique oil but not finishing oil. It's also a Chestnut product that we cannot get in the US. Any ideas where I might look for finishing oil?
Thanks for commenting. Worrying times indeed!! I think finishing oil is very similar to Danish oil so you should get a similar finish from it. I didn't realise you couldn't get it in the states....I thought you were able to get all Chestnut Products on the US. Email them and they may be able to help. mailroom@chestnutproducts.co.uk
Hi Stewart that is a pretty bowl & a nice sized blank I probably have. Can I ask when you applied the yellow colour had the blue dried?. I personally liked the green effect.
Absolutely stunning Stuart. Love the colours you achieved. I usually use the intrinsic colours but seeing the chestnut ones you used they appear to be more vibrant in tone if my eyes don’t deceive me ?
Thanks, Steve. I have limited experience with the intrinsic colours so can't make a detailed comparison but I find the chestnut ones more vivid. Must do more with the intrinsics though. Delighted you like it. Cheers!
Glad you back and feeling well again mate. Quick question with sanding to 400 grit, colouring and then adding the oil do you think the oil has worked deep enough into the wood to last, would it then take a wax on top? Sorry guess that’s two questions! Great looking dish!
Hi Phil - thanks for your comment. It's good not to be laid up in bad any longer! Interestingly, I have another piece of this ash which I have coloured red/brown and it was only sanded to my usual 240. It's been gulping up oil like nobody's business, unlike this one! I'll bring the blue one indoors and give it some real life use and let you know. I think it will be absolutely fine.....ask me again in six months! Cheers!!
WOW! Stunning piece. I love the way the colors work with each other. Could you tell me what grits of sandpaper you go through when cutting back the color? Thanks.
Hi Stewart. Rather late to this game but truly inspired by this. Can I ask are you sealing the wood before or after staining as my finishing oil seems to leave everything very dull compared with the high gloss you have? Thanks, Andrew
Hi Andrew - with this one I didn't use a sealer as the manufacturer's recommendation for the oil is for it to go over bare, unsealed wood. It took a few coats to build up the shine though. Leave it to cure for a few days and then it can be buffed to a shine.
Hi Stewart, I just want you to know you are truly an inspiration to watch, I love the work you do with coloring platters and bowls, definitely adds so much more to woodturning than just turning a simple bowl or platter. Well I was curious what oil you use especially the one on the ash platter, your most recent video. I'm not sure if I can get chestnut in the states, I will look, but what is the actual product.
Thanks, Leoonardo - delighted to hear you enjoy my videos. Here's a link to the oil I used - chestnutproducts.co.uk/product/finishing-oil/ It's based on tung oil, but I don't think you can hold of it in the US....I've emailed them to ask if it's available on your side of the Atlantic. Cheers!!
Thanks, Chris....the stains are alcohol based stains from Chestnut Products....they are not food safe, but you could put a food safe coating over them to act as a barrier between food and stain. I wouldn't use stained bowls for food use.
