I could not wait to play this in the arcades. Used to get the train to Manchester to play it, until I owned my very own Japanese Saturn copy. I can't thank Tomita enough for having the balls to make the game.
I remember I got a 4Ram with chests on it and it allowed to do combos midscreen as if you were in the corner and it was so cool but alas my Saturn Laser doesn't work any more. Luckily Capcom released the Fighting collection. 🤟
At the local bowling alley in a small town in Texas this game was a staple of our arcade. I had no idea this game was ever in development but was a massive fan of Marvel and Street Fighter so when I saw this as a 11 year old my mind was BLOWN. I almost pinched myself to see if I was awake!
An excellent game. All my friends thought the concept was odd. That Street fighters couldn't stand a chance against the X-men. So upping their FX was a good idea. I remember a X-men VS Street Fighter online website back in 2000. People were able to play the game on the site. It must have been running on flash. Not the best experience but fun.
I remember the first time I played this. I was totally blown away. By the time Marvel vs Capcom was released, I jokingly predicted Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. Who knew that would come out years after I made that joke?
I love how much you cover this game top hat! I’ve been obsessed with the animations, art style, hit effects, soundtrack and everything about this game since it came out in 97. I wish we get a sequel in this style but updated it’s such a masterpiece
Thanks to you mentioning this live earlier I would have never found this! And it's such a great video going to play this and maybe alpha later! Thanks for the upload top hat
I must say that this is the most comprehensive and entertaining video I have seen. Thanks for the video and I appreciate your hard work and dedication to gaming history 👍
Great video I wanted to import the sega saturn release in 1998 back then I remember UK sega magazine gossiping that xmenvssf was going to get an official saturn pal release that got canceled 4 some reason and ended up w the terrible psone version wish sega had released it in the west I guess I understand now I've watched the video
I remember as a kid my local arcade got street fighter vs X-Men machine and there was so many people just hanging around the machine. Adults kids everyone who caught a glimpse of it through the window.
Ah, the nostalgia from nearly 30 years ago of basically sprinting to the former arcade at our old mall just to play this game while my mom shopped. This game was basically my first introduction to the Street Fighter franchise at 9 years old. A great and memorable game overall.
I miss taco bell express, and then they had a hypnosis show next door, and then upstairs was the arcade room where they had this game, it was the easiest trick to get Akuma. (Go all the way up on the character selection screen).
X-Men vs SF : Japanese Saturn : _ January 1998 Playstation : _ September 1998. 17 fighters Ryû Ken Chun-Li Charlie Cammy Bison Zangief Dhalsim Akuma Wolverine Cyclops Gambit Rogue Sabretooth Magneto Juggernaut Storm * Big Boss : Apocalypse
X-Men vs. Street Fighter is a huge milestone for Capcom. I do think its the Pinnacle game of the whole Marvel vs. Capcom series as nothing else have outdone what XVSF has accomplished. When I first saw XVSF in arcade back in 1997, I was shocked by the special effects that have for every fighter. Ryu had a bigger Hadoken and super beam Hadoken. Ken's Shoryureppa went up so high with amazing fire effects. To see Charlie throw out so many Sonic Booms instead of just 5 was crazy too! Then to see Cyclops, Wolverine and Magneto using their special moves, it made the whole game feel like a huge all-our war with special moves thrown left and right. I played X-Men COTA and Marvel Super Heroes before XVSF and these 2 games were slow and boring. It wasn't exciting at all but rather just so dull. But when I played XVSF and got to experience the tag-team system, it blew my mind away. Then I started seeing the Infinite combos and wanted to use them. I started with Ryu since his was a bit easier. But yeah right! His Infinite was still tough as heck to perform. Literally everyone's Infinite was hard to pull off until you perfect it. I truly think XVSF should have gotten a sequel instead of Marvel vs. Cacpom. The reached their Prime with MVC2 already. Would have been great to see a sequel that brings back all the returning Marvel characters like Cable, Omega Red, Spiral, Sentinel, Ice Man, Pyslocke and Colossus. Then add new fighters from both X-men and Street Fighter only though. Update the Infinite Combos and this time, add a BURST mechanics like Guilty Gear where you can Burst out of long combos to balance the game mechanics. Make all fighters have air-dash and double jumps. And make all heroes have 3 Supers rather than just 2. I would have prefer to see an X-Men vs. Street Fighter 2 rather than another Marvel vs. Capcom now. Hopefully it does happen!! Otherwise, X-men vs. Street Fighter will forever remain a legendary fighting game for years to come.
I remember magazines bashing the ps1 game in Europe because it was 2D and seemed outdated compared to stuff like Tekken, Final Fantasy 7 etc. Even with the tagging mechanics, the Saturn version didn't fare much better in European video game magazines.
And that's just the story of the arcade title. Imagine the story about bringing it home. That title literally kept the Saturn afloat for the last couple years of its existence at Electronics Boutique and made them start carrying import games. We have a joke if that if in the first 10 seconds no one makes a tag team I say "Did I accidentally buy the PlayStation version of this game?"
3:58 No, this is a legitimate phenomenon that I first started taking note of in my studies of Popstrology (or "What Song Was No. 1 On The Charts At The Moment Of Your Birth" 😊)...as detailed there, it is termed "Power Coupling" & is shown when two stars roughly equal in comparison team up that one always emerges brighter & stronger while the other wastes away 🎆 examples include Frank & Nancy Sinatra, Aretha Franklin & George Michael, Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson, etc. 😶 With the only ones to emerge unscathed are those whose power imbalance is already present from the start, see: Elton John & Kiki Dee, Phil Collins & Marilyn Martin, et al. so Capcom was fully justified in fearing a team-up with an up-&-comer like Marvel & truthfully it's a lesson that would be well for many in the general public to apply in their own day-to-day dealings either on small personal levels or in larger business settings 🤔
American comics were never big in Japan. Even today there are very few specialized comics stores there. Monthly publications are pretty much non existant, only a few titles manage to get there and even less are translated to japanese. And prices can be as expensive as $60 per book. So yeah, maybe it's no wonder Marvel games weren't as big in Japan, and Capcom's concerns were justified at the time. But it's undeniable that the game was very important to popularize Marvel heroes in Japan and many people love those characters now, even though very few actually read the comics.

I play this more than Marvel vs Capcom 2 on the fighting collection
My favourite in the Marvel vs Capcom Fighting collection
I play that too
Saaame. And mvc1! ❤ 💯
I played this almost every lunch hour at the local Comic Book store back in my high school days!! ❤❤
I could not wait to play this in the arcades. Used to get the train to Manchester to play it, until I owned my very own Japanese Saturn copy. I can't thank Tomita enough for having the balls to make the game.
That's so shocking there is no faith in this game when it is undoubtedly one of the coolest and most well celebrated crossovers in gaming history! 💪❤️
Man this was the first import game i got on sega Saturn.
Same bro. This game was the reason that I even brought a Saturn.
The Saturn was THE console for arcade ports. Those were the days.
I remember I got a 4Ram with chests on it and it allowed to do combos midscreen as if you were in the corner and it was so cool but alas my Saturn Laser doesn't work any more. Luckily Capcom released the Fighting collection. 🤟

Unfortunately, that was a monkey's paw situation. The game wasn't as good as it should be.
I love how much you cover this game top hat! I’ve been obsessed with the animations, art style, hit effects, soundtrack and everything about this game since it came out in 97. I wish we get a sequel in this style but updated it’s such a masterpiece

I remember seeing this game at my local theater around December '96, it was the most random and mindblowing thing I ever saw at the time.
Same experience for me at a bowling alley lol

It was a s2pd mindset. X-men is better than MCU avengers

This and Area 51 were a staple on my walk home during high school
The Capcom characters need to appear in "What If"....
I remember magazines bashing the ps1 game in Europe because it was 2D and seemed outdated compared to stuff like Tekken, Final Fantasy 7 etc.

We have a joke if that if in the first 10 seconds no one makes a tag team I say "Did I accidentally buy the PlayStation version of this game?"
The arcade versions were superior honestly, but back then, holding the PS1 version in hand as a shorty just felt so crazy. Surreal even.
super jumps are the one thing I never understood in the vs series. classic sf gameplay feels so much better.
Fascinating!😈💜

The crazy thing is that this game also had a story.
Capcom seems to be quite clueless... they do make such bizarre things.
American comics were never big in Japan. Even today there are very few specialized comics stores there. The logic of thinking older IP, Marvel comics with a younger IP, Capcom's Street Fighter would ruin the brand is diabolical.
You got a cold mate
This was the best Street Fighter crossover game.
Well, it's more of capcom huberous, and it only got worse with the late 2000s, earlier 2010s
Mortal kombat is a lot better & it would be a lot cooler if they make MK vs SF or even better mk vs capcom 👍 even if they turn mk characters into animated characters like capcom characters it would be cool 😎 and different but mk have had a cartoon series and animated movies so it is possible 🙂
Ok Streetfighter is good but it's not Marvel hasn't been around as long doesn't have characters that are as Iconic. If anyone should have had doubts it should have been Marvel
🎉
Striaght from the live stream🫡🫡
Ps1 copy owner people talk bad about it but its part of history
The armchair quarterbacks made bad calls as usual because it was great 👍
I honesty couldn't and still can't stand this game. I feel like it was a wasted opportunity for an X-Men: COTA arcade sequel.
Wow, get over yourself.
@@Til_thesmokeclrz I said it, so get over it.
The marvel-capcom collection hasn’t even sold a million because it’s just a rom dump. The mvc2 hd remaster on ps3/360 still looks way better and you can play it for free on ps3 emulator. Capcom is lazy and doesn’t put care in these classics need
screw online, this game was meant to be played in an arcade. Youre a baby so thats why you wouldnt understand this.
